MY GF AND I LOVE THAI FOOD. HER FRIEND TOLD HER ABOUT A PLACE RATED BEST IN AMERICA (THATS WHAT SHE TOLD HER). SO I TEXT MY GIRL TODAY AND ASKED IF SHE WANTS TO GO, AND SHE SAID SHE'D LOVE TO. WE WERE SO EXCITED TO TRY A GREAT NEW PLACE. WHEN WE WALKED IN WE THOUGHT THE WAITRESSES WERE MUTE BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT TO SPEAK TO US UNTIL WE HEARD THEM LATER TALKING AND LAUGHING AMONGIST THEMSELVES. IT WAS THE WORST SERVICE I'VE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE. THEY MADE ME FEEL LIKE I WAS ASKING FOR FREE FOOD. THE PLACE IS SO FILTHY, IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT I MEAN GO IN THERE AND CHECK THE MENUS. WE ORDERED PAD PHET AND CASHEW NUT. THEY WERE AWFUL. A VERY BAD EXPERIENCE. I WAS SO UNHAPPY UNTIL I GAVE MY FOOD TO A HOMELESS MAN OUTSIDE AND GOT TO MAKE SOMEBODY HAPPY. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO SOMEONE U HATE.

A lot of people complain about this place but I feel most every bad review the persons are complaining to the point of just sounding like spoiled babys. This place is awesome, the yellow curry, pad-sew-ew, pad phet, lemon grass chicken is all the best in Portland. I've lived in Downtown for 6 years & constantly come back to this place. Don't let a few horribly written reviews steer you away from enjoying a party in you mouth.

Last night (06/17/10) my friend and I went to this restaurant "Thai Peacock". Unfortunately, we weren't satisfied with the customer service and hygiene.
First of all, the waitresses were ignoring us and took them thirty minutes to get an order from us. Although they weren??t busy at all because they had only two couples at the table.
When I made an order they brought me a different item and said that??s what I??ve ordered, and made it triple spicy that it was hard to eat.
In addition to everything, the waitress she was mopping the floor with gloves on and then she came up and refilled our water glasses with the same gloves as she washed the floor. The waitress without washing her hands and taken her gloves off she continued washing the tables, placing the silverware on the table, and then went back into washing the floor and sweeping it.
Later when I came home after half an hour my friend and I felt sick, nauseated. I was vomiting all night. Luckily I fill better now but I??m still concerned about the food that I ate. I called my doctor and I was just recommended to drink fluids and avoid that place. I did have food poisen however I could've get E-coli and then get kidney failure then death. I personally believe that they should be fined for inappropriate hygiene and customer service because my health could get worth. I work in the customer service, and I also have to follow infection control policies but what I saw it was rediculose.

I am very frustrated with this restaurant. I have never come across any restaurant, till now, who isn't willing to accomodate their customer's requests. All I asked for is to have the dressing left off of a salad, and just be sent on the side. They told me they couldn't do that, they could only do that for their Thai Salad. I have ordered this same type of salad many times to go from other Thai restaurants, and have never been told that they absolutely couldn't accomodate my request. I do not feel it is asking too much to ask for dressing on the side, besides the fact that the salad isn't cheap by any means. I don't normally take the time to write reviews, especially bad ones, but after being told they couldn't do this simple thing for me, I will never give them my money again. It actually put a damper on my day, after I was looking forward to this wonderful salad, and then it came to me, all nasty and soggy. TWO THUMBS DOWN FOR NOT ACCOMODATING CUSTOMER'S SPECIAL REQUESTS!!!!!

I would consider myself an experienced thai food eater coming from the LA area and trying numerous thai food places and thai peacock was one of the best thai food places Ive been to, if not the best.

I ordered the lobster balls for an appetizer, pineapple fried rice and cashew tofu and all of it was absolutely delicious. The fried rice had fresh large pieces of pineapple and they were not stingy with the amount of cashews in there and it was seasoned perfectly.

The cashew tofu is always the regular dish i get at thai resturaunts and it was seasoned so perfectly, the blend of sweet and spicy was exactly right and so was the amount of cashews--and the kicker was the way they cooked tofu--ive had some great thai food where the places still leave the tofu a little bit soggy in the middle or a tad unflavorful but this was literally the best cooked tofu I have ever had. It was done perfectly.

The price was good as well, the same prices for a hole in the wall thai place but the ambiance, location and service made us think that the bill was gonna 20 dollars more than it ended up being--in fact we read our bill wrong and we were still satisfied with that price.

My only complaint was that they did not take our finished plates quick enough, but still there was more than enough room on the table for them.

Amazing place!

Very quality Thai food, great atmosphere, but the last two times I ordered takeout, my "very mild" was so spicy I couldn't eat it.

If you want to have a sit-down downtown thai lunch, this is your place. Try the drunken noodles or a spicy stir-fry. It's all good.

we came in 1.5 hours before close, the only people in there. We then ordered and never saw our waitress until our food came out. It was decent. half way through another lady came out and threw our bill on the table as if impatient for us to leave... with another hour before close. When we asked for some dessert to go (trying to be nice and get out) she was clearly not happy about it and took 20 mins to bring us our sticky rice... it was a poor experience.

A friend and I were planning on meeting for lunch and my friend having been there before recommended it as a nice place for a quick bite. It started off with the waitress asking how many in our party, at which point she walked away before getting our answer. She stopped halfway across the restaurant and said "Are you coming?" in a fairly rude tone.
We were seated upstairs in the back corner after requesting a window seat, however we were told that we would be unable to get one as the table was reserved for a larger party. The entire time we were there our service was very short and rude conversationally.
The next party to come upstairs to be seated was a party of two as well, however when they asked for a window seat the waitress promptly divided up the tables and sat them. When asked about this she explained to us she had to wait to see if a larger party was coming. (There was about a two minute time between when I was seated and the next party was.)
When I asked to speak to a manager the waitress stated "Actually I am in charge." and walked away. It is obvious to say I will not be going back.

Even when I've gone there during busy times, the service is fast and friendly. The food is excellent, and I've eaten at tons of Thai places, so I know. Nice central location.

The only thing they could do better is enlarge the somewhat claustrophobic main dining area. Fortunately, outside seating during nice weather provides relief.

I've been to this restaurant several times and have really enjoyed it but the last time I went, a few bites into my meal I bit something extremely hard! I thought maybe a shell, though i didn't order the seafood ginger, it was the chicken.

To my surprise, and relief I didn't bite harder, there was a chunk of concrete (small rock inside and all) about the size of the end of a sharpened pencil (wood too).

Thankfully I'd eaten worse in my past, think OCS, so I didn't think much of it besides that it's dangerous and hoped i didn't loosen a crown.

So when they checked on us at the end of the meal, I told them what had happened and gave them the piece of the concrete.

The two girls looked at it and started saying something like it wasn't in the food because it was dry. now I can understand that some people do this, but I'm a clean cut 24 year old and I'm not in desperate need of a free meal. So that ticked me off and I piped up that it'd been sitting on the table for a half an hour and yes it was indeed in my food and I bit down on it.

They said whatever and rightly removed the cost of my plate from the bill. Well whatever to their chefs and I hope they pay more attention to what they put in.

Moral of the story, so far 4/5 experiences enjoyable, one could have cost 100s in dental work = 3 stars. You be the judge and mind your fork.

I have mostly ordered here to go, and a sat down a few times. They have good food...it's what I would expect from a Thai restaurant. It gets pretty busy from time to time, but I have never had to wait to be seated. I would take a date here....then again I would take a date a lot of places most people wouldn't. I'm going to leave it at this is a good restaurant. The food tastes delicious...like most Thai food...and I would recommend it!

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Portland. Not only is the food delicious, but the service, portion size and value are all excellent. The only negatives that I have for this place is atmosphere and parking. The tables are a bit small and the chairs on the uncomfortable side. If I had to guess, I would say that the restaurant could sit about 60 uncomfortably or 30 with room to spread out. This is not a reason to avoid this wonderful establishment though. It is not 'that bad' and most people would probably have no issue with it.

My favorite meals from Thai Peacock are:
Tom Ka (Coconut milk soup with mushrooms, tomatoes, and onions, flavored with lemongrass and lime juice),
Phad Thai (if you don't know what Phad Thai is, you've never had Thai food before),
Pad Kee Mao/Drunken Noodles (spicy rice noodles with veggies, basil leaves, and your choice of protein)
Chicken Pad Ga Prau (Chili, bell peppers, onions, and sweet basil leave).

I judge Thai restaurants by their Tom Ka. Phad Thai is hard to mess up, but if you can make an incredible soup... then I'm sold. Now it's not the best Tom Ka that I've ever had, but it's a good second place.

Side note: the best Tom Ka that I've ever had was from a little place in Lompoc, California that went out of business soon after I moved. I seriously put their kids through college, I went there so often. When I left, they lost their best customer and couldn't keep the lifestyle that they had grown accustomed too with me coming in every day. :)

My final word: Best Thai in town

Pretty small space but cozy and warm. Was a great stop after wandering around in the cold. We ordered Tom Kha Guy and loved it... mmmm... so much we ordered a 2nd bowl. We also had two other dishes - unfortunately can't tell you the names.. but one was another chicken that was still on the bone in some teriyaki-type sauce. It was very good and tender. The third dish was so-so. Our server was great; she also took some time to basically give us a short lesson on Thai language. (it started with 'guy' (chicken) and if you want Tom Kha with chicken, say Tom Kha Guy, or with Tofu say Tom Kha with tofu, etc... and it went on from there) Good food, try it out.

If this restaurant were located elsewhere, it would never make it. Service is surly, prices are above average, and food is only okay. Do yourself a favor and walk a few blocks in any direction and you'll find better Thai food. It's Portland after all.

I eat at Thai Peacock alot during the week for lunch. The lunch meals are a good value, $6+ dollars gets me more food than I can finish. There have been days where my girlfriend and I swear the food is some of the best Thai we've ever tasted...but what's really a shame is that they just aren't consistent, even down to the ingredients which go into any given dish. Overall, the food is good, and you may get lucky and have it be *amazing*...I certainly have.

This restaurant is very much like the most Thai restaurants I've been to -- exotic food with less than authentic Thai flavored dishes. Some dishes are too greasy and I wonder if they went through a bit of western adjustment? The service was okay if they weren't in such a hurry. Their lunch menu was diverse and the food was served pretty quick for the amount of preparation involved.

These guys take the crown (from Thai Orchid?) for the amount of oil used in the dishes ...which are no doubt flavorful, colorful and tasty. Our stir fry dish was 'floating' on a lake of red colored oil (it was hot as hell - but thats good!). So, if you are counting calories or grams of fat - you want to give TP a pass. Otherwise go ahead and gorge on perfectly wonderful westernized Thai food.

Hands down, the best Thai in Portland! This place has lost its status as an undiscovered gem, and is now just a gem. There have been some problems as they've had to cope with success, but this place still works magic with curries. You get authentic flavors you won't taste anywhere else in Portland without a ticket to Bangkok. Soups aren't the strong point and the music is all over the board, but if you don't know what fish cakes are... learn! It's a lot busier these days, so if you want fawning staff and blase food go to Typhoon. For good people and true Thai, hit the Peacock.

The food was fine, however, the service is one of the worst I've had in a very long time. The wait staff was unattentive and insulting towards new coniseurs. The weekday lunch special portions were small for the price.

I was very dissappointed at the service I received at the Thai Peacock in Downtown Portland. I ordered a lunch special and the Thai Coconut desert. I paid for my meal, then sat down to wait. After about 15 minutes they brought me my meal and told me that they were sorry, but the desert was to time consuming and difficult to make, therefore they would not be making it for me. They were however gracious enough to refund my money. I think if they are to busy to make this desert on the lunch hour they need to indicate it on their menu. Not a good way to impress new customers. I will never sacrafice my lunch hour again to walk their restaurant

Excellent food and service. I was very happy and relieved to finally find a Portland restaurant that makes my favorite dishes (Pra Ram, a peanut sauce dish and Tom Ka Gai, a coconut soup) deliciously. All of the other dishes I've had there are also delicious!
