One of my favorite places for lunch! The tree hugger sandwich has both guacamole and cream cheese. Delicious.

with so many vegan options here in Portland I'm more then a little surprised this place is still open. The decor's ok, the service is fine. food came out in a decent amount of time. unfortunately it was just tasteless mush. I had the vegan corn-cake, with tofu and house vegi sausage. the tofu was completely unseasoned cubes of packaged tofu, pan fried. the vegi sausage had a slight taste to it, which didn't make up for its mushy crumbly texture. the corn cake was just oil fried mush. the house syrup was sugar water, not thick at all. my husband had the chili with corn "muffins" the muffins were mushy hockey pucks, and the chili was bland mush. we tried this place before, ordered different things, and it was pretty much the same deal. save your money, try one of the countless other vegan place here in town. Vita has a great breakfast if your up before 3pm. Dots has great lunch. go anywhere but here, honestly.

My friend and I tried to have lunch at Paradox this past Sunday. However, after waiting 17 minutes by the door we left. We signed in on the little clip board, and we saw three vacant tables and four empty seats at the bar. None of the staff so much as greeted us or anything! I am not sure why were not allow ed to seat ourselves at the bar, but the staff kept chatting away cheerfully with other customers at the bar. I don't mind waiting for service, but at least say hello and acknowledge my presence! Maybe my friend and I weren't dressed hip enough?

Always great and creative fare. However the staff is sullen to the point of rudeness. I guess I should look on the bright side - no need to tip. Seriously, they have a bad attitude problem, almost resentful at having to deal with customers.

This restaurant rocks. I haven't been for a while but it was so awesome to find a restaurant with all vegetarian items and one burger...That's the paradox.

Not organic. Service was very good, but no commitment to non-gmo, staff was not knowledgeable of source of ingredients. Didn't eat the food, too crappy and made with inferior ingredients like gmo canola oil, gmo soy, gmo cheese, etc. Trying, but not hard enough. Go to Papa G's

If you want a greasy diner feeling with vegan options, this is your place. I love the corn cakes and their scrambles can't ever go wrong on a rainy morning. Vegan Nachos are the best there as well.

THe Bennedict is the best in town. If you don't want breakfast try the Veggie Philly they have is big and good for lunch or dinner. THe salads are cheaper than buying one at a organic grocery store. we Went on a week night and weekend. The weeknight the server was extremely accomidating with a special diet I have and the food came very quickly. The weekend was quick for the line they had. The food was amazing the servers were accomidating and kind, and got the food out as quickly as humanly possible. Worth the wait !!!!

Pros: good cheap organic food, cleaner than it was a few years ago. looks like a 50's diner

Cons: lines on sunday. just relax it's worth the wait ! ! ! small groups under 7

I love the new addition to this amazing place. It feels roomy and airy. The yellow walls make you feel at home. And the food...wow! I just started eating vegan and was a little nervous about the tofu, soy ingredients. I am no longer concerned. I had the Fake Philly and I could have sworn it was the real thing. And I have had philly's on South Street in Philly. The teas are great as well. I am planning on having dinner and breakfast at the Paradox at least once a week. This is a place that you crave! It could turn even my meat loving father into a Vegan...

Lots and Lots of choices on the menu! I've loved everything I've had there. The tamales are not traditional but still delicious. They make really good tex-mex dishes like the mexi-scramble and the tamales. I'm from Texas and miss good spicy texmex but Paradox nails it. They have something for every taste...thai inpired, italian, american, etc. I don't recomend the veggie burger. It's a little too loosely packed as a patty. They do offer all beef patties for the non-veggers. If you're in a hurry to eat this is not the place. Also, there's always long waits on the weekends.

The deluxe green salad is big, and has a nice variety of veggies (I recall at least 8 or 9 types); the sesame-peanut dressing is also very good. And my waitress was perfectly amiable.

I love going to places where I do not have to drill the wait staff about what is in their food. Paradox Cafe makes great vegan stuff. I love the artichoke dip and the lasagna. I have never been dissapointed here. Great prices too!

Whenever my friend asks if I want to go to breakfast with him I don?t even bother asking where we are going, it?s always the Paradox. It?s amazing and anyone who doesn?t think so is out of their mind. I usually get the #3 (which you get $1 off if you are there before 10 during the week) with tofu, French toast, and potatoes crispy .He usually gets #2 curry style. I also love the artichoke dip. The tempeh gyro is good, the soup is good, everything?s good. A very non vegan friend of mine had the sloppy Joes and ended up licking the plate (literally). And the servers are incredibly patient, even at 8 am when I wasn?t suppose to be up till 10 am.

Good Vegan French Toast!!! Love the Biscuits and Almond Gravy, Vegan Chili is good times! HOWEVER Lighten UP! I make a really long trip to get to Paradox but after continious cranky servers it makes you think twice!! During one visit I watched as the staff here stood around and made fun of some customers who had just come in and didnt know that it was a seat yourself joint. They talked loud so that they were sure to hear and didnt bother informing them...I felt bad but what could I do?! I would say if your ready for poor service from some ....better from others and pretty good food choices give it a try...dont think your friendly attitude will rub off on them though they seem set to be rude!

the paradox is now under new ownership (as is Vita)...and i can confidently say that paradox has come out on top. i was just there this morning and they have added a bunch of new stuff to the menu, and i believe all of the new dishes were vegan. their prices are still the same (unlike the increase at Vita), and the food is great. tons of awesome vegan comfort food, and almost all of the non-vegan dishes can be made vegan upon request. hopefully the new owners realized the dedicated vegan following they have and will eventually realize theres no need for "organic beef" on their menu.

I like the fact that it's a vegetarian restaurant in a convenient location. However, the food tastes better and fresher at "Blue Moose" on 4936 NE Fremont St. Portland OR 97213. Give it a try, you'll know what I mean!

I just ate at Paradox and it was great! I came to check out the reviews and was especially shocked to see a dis to the veggies! THey were as close to perfect as I have ever eaten. I am sold on the freshness of this food and have taken quite a few friends in and they love it too. They met all of my picky requests and always have everthing just the way I want it! Perhapse some of the other reviewers had a rare bad experience but I eat here 3 to 4 times a week and have never had a problem....except having to wait for a seat beacuse it is so small!

I used to come here from out of town just for the tofu and potatoes.... the tofu picks up the salty flavors of the fried potatoes... awsome dish. But now I live right around the corner and have been here a couple of times. I've tried different menu options to stay away from the greesy (but so yummy) potatoes... but I become more and more dissappointed with each new item I order. The soup is completely flavorless and what really got me is that their veggies aren't fresh! this place has a 90% vegan menu... and their veggies were dried out and dirty! I am not vegan... so I dont gennerally opt for the vegan "meat replacement patties" I just really like my veggies... so maybe this place just isnt my style. Nice wait staff... terrible food and menu.

This place is now part of our weekly routine. Their smoothies, vegan french toast, haystack sandwich, vegan mac and cheese, and most of their breakfast menu is amazing!! I would steer clear of the tempeh rueben, but it might've just had an off day when i ordered it. You can't fail with this place!! The waitstaff is always nice. I'm never in a rush when i go there so i don't see the slowness. If you're looking for a great place to go for vegan/vegetarian fare, take up this place anyday of the week... it's currently on weekly rotation in my house. I promise that it won't disappoint

The last time I reviewed Paradox I was negative due to poor service and a generally unclean appearance. They have since come way up, but lost none of the pleasantly funky atmosphere. Breakfast was more than ample with delicious seasonings and perfectly cooked vegies. The price can't be beat. Service was cheerful, and a tad slow in taking orders and preparation/serving, but when we got it, the food was hot off the grill. The biscuits and almond gravy was as good as ever, but it was one menu item that was a bit skimpy for the price.

I love this place. I have been going since I discovered it this year and things just keep getting better and better. I am used to eating bland food at many of the local Portland vegan eateries and am sick of it. Paradox keeps getting better. The menu has a lot of choices and the specials are usually even better! My kids even get a good choice of healthy food that tastes good and that is so much better than other eateries that throw everything in grease and call it a kid menu. The staff works hard and all you have to do is speak up if you are not noticed right away even when super busy. I take all my friends and family.

Great vegan and veggie stuff! Vegan french toast & sausage - yum! Great scrambles egg or tofu. I tried the vegan corndog basket and loved it like you love greezey-arse carnival food sometimes. It was seriously the size of a baby and served with a huge plateful of fries! I couldn't even fathom eating 1/2 of the plate!

I love the yum-yum carob shake...but wish they would throw real non-dairy shakes in the mix because this would be the perfect place for them! The other desserts are amazing though! They also have great tea and coffee.

I love the service here - I've been many many times and have always gotten either sweet happy attention or honest, straight-forward and welcoming attention. Never had my bum kissed (which I don't like), never felt any hate either. No attitudes.

The atmosphere is cozy and worn, but clean and comfy... although some of the booths need the seats re-sprung. However if it meant going to chairs or becoming chi-chi I'd keep the cute booths.

It does get a little line on weekends, but moves pretty fast.

I had the breakfast #3 and my husband had the soup/salad combo. The garden sausage was pretty tasty, the waffle was soooooooo good. My husband loved the onion/herb bread that came with his soup, and his only complaint was that it was too much food!

Our wait person was friendly and attentive.

There were four in my party: two vegans, a semi-vegetarian, and an omnivore. We showed up on a Sunday for lunch and, after a brief wait, we got a booth and each found something satisfying and tasty. I was stoked to see that they offer breakfast all day, especially when I realized that they had veggie sausage! It had the best texture and blend of spices I've ever had (and I've tried them all.)

Overall, I'd say our waitress, Hailey, was the shining star of the experience. She was ready to answer all of our questions about ingredients and neighborhood directions, and did it all with a bright smile.

This is not a place I would describe as swanky or modern, and the furniture is a bit worn, but that's what I'd expect for low prices and earth-friendly business practices. Just go and try it out.

Great breakfast diner with vegan French toast and many vegan breakfast options. It also has eggs and sausage for omnivores. I enjoyed the food, but it did seem a bit pricey, and your clothes seriously smell like a diner after you leave - they need a bit more ventilation.

After waiting 45 minutes to get two entrees, my girlfriend and I were utterly disgusted. I am a chef myself, and I couldn't believe this stuff was served. I ordered a breakfast combo plate, really hoping it would be good veggie food. My "tofu" eggs were cold and in large liquidy chunks with CINNAMON liberally sprinkled all over them, the biscuits couldn't be chipped into with a hammer and chisel - my girlfriends breakfast burrito had the most oddball vegetables in it, it was more like a nasty veggie wrap. Someone please tell me WHY this place is popular, I wouldn't feed this stuff to my dog.

This is the bottom line on Paradox: excellent food, reasonable prices, and a popular place.
I have to say that perhaps to avoid any negative experiences like some of the reviewers just come in with a positive attitude and be respectful.
There is a great atmosphere there and the staff are friendly and work very hard. Just keep in mind that if you show up for Sunday morning brunch, for example, it will be packed! Also the prep time on the food is not very fast, but the staff is attentive and you will be taken care of. The dishes have a "home made" feel to them and are not only large portions, but taste AWESOME!

yeah...if you all keep giving a place like paradox some biz what's the point in making the service more 'happy' for all you folks? In general Portland service at best is lame, below par all around. Most places don't give a crap if service is bad because folks just keep coming back because the foods good or they get good service 4 out the 10 times they've been. I don't think it's what you wear or how you smell..it's Portland, it's SE granola cool attitude...just deal...cuz it ain't a changin'.

The biscuits and almond gravy is this places' only saving grace. The wait staff was snappish and snobby to me and my friends. Yeah okay so we didn't look like hipsters or hippi's but that's no reason to be rude. This place has a nice vibe to it even though the wait for food did seem a big long. Don't however order their 4 grain pancake mine was doughy and gross. Its a coin toss on the food I suppose...good luck!

The other night my girlfriend and I were driving along Hawthorne looking for a bite and decided on Paradox Cafe. It had this funky decor mixed with cosmic, new age inspired artwork amongst a dinerlike atmosphere. We looked at the menu and realized that this place was definitely devoted to vegetarians. Nice list of dishes, but only a few meat choices for those looking for some protein. The Staff. heh...well, here's where the place loses ALL its charm. The waitress was painfully slow and devoid of any personality. We ordered our drinks and waited 10 minutes before she came back and asked us..." Um, what were those drinks that you ordered again? I forgot." Thats about sums up my experience there. Food took an hour to get and it was so-so. My girlfriend's Miso Soup was so salty it made me wince. Pass on this place.

I was scrolling down through these reviews and it seems that the "service" at Paradox is questionable. I've been to the Paradox many times over the years (the first time I'd been there they had an alien/ufo theme going on) and have never felt out of place and have always received great food from a great staff with a good attitude. Maybe you get what you give? Or maybe I've just been lucky. The place has a local-diner-esque vibe and comes recommended for vegetarians, vegans, and meat eaters. The bottom line is that it's good food at a good price. Don't look for novelty vegetarian dishes here, just yummy eats. And the staff ain't all that bad... sheesh.

being a vegan i enjoy the food at paradox a great deal... however the people who work there are all rude. its like you have to be accepted into their country club before they will even look you in the eye. i have been going there for over 3 years and i still get the same aditude.

My mom and I like to go out to breakfast when we get a chance, and this is one of our fave places to go. We're definitely not hipsters, just people that like good veggie food, and we have never had bad service. They don't do the fakey-perky thing like Denny's, but they are efficient and nice. The breakfast specials come with coffee and are super cheap and filling. We even went for Mother's day with my mom, myself, 2 teenage girls, and a young boy (hard crowd to please!) and it was very enjoyable (we sat at the counter). Liva la Paradox Palace!

Know how you go in some restaurants and they think that since you're a vegetarian, you must want a wrap or something, anything with fried bell peppers? Not Paradox. Their vegetarian tacos are the almost-real deal, with "ground beef." (Almost) just like Mom used to make. Yum.

We love to have breakfast at Paradox. I don't consider myself vegan or vegetarian, but the food is absolutely delicious! Top notch! The wait staff is always kind and helpful, especially the young gentelman who works mornings!

We frequent this little cafe- especially at the time where there's not a long line! We are definitely not a vegetarian or vegan, but we never walk away unsatisfied. The portions are gigantic considering what a "cheap eat" restaurant this is!

Pros: for vegan lovers, for veggie lovers, for meat lovers

Cons: no bacon!

The Paradox has the best vegan breakfast in town! The Paradox now buys from local farmers and has a sign board with all the information about the farms and the farmers!

I've had at least 50 meals at paradox and I've rarely been dissapointed.

Only in Portland would you find a hipster cafe boasting of being able to "veganize" anything on the menu while simultaneously pushing the Oregon Country beef in its burgers. There's even a chorizo sausage scramble with tofu. Such are the…
