My husband and I finally made it to Lauro! We had heard great things are were really looking forward to it. Sadly, we were disappointed. While the starter salad rocked (nice Caesar-style), the entrees were really unremarkable. I got a chicken breast stuffed with goat cheese and a piquant sauce. It should have been amazing but it wasn't. My husband got a seafood pasta that was just okay too. The wine was just okay. The dessert was unremarkable. We might go back if it were in our neighborhood and cost a lot less, but we won't be back. Too many good restaurants in Portland to waste time and money with the mediocre ones (even the highly hyped mediocre ones).

Wonderful seasonal menu. The head chef can often be found greeting people at the door - she's that confident in the product. Fun mixed drink menu too. Great atmosphere. A favorite.

Our first visit to Lauro was for our Valentines' dinner. We were a bit worried after reading some of the reviews here. When we arrived, the hostess made a special effort to sit us at a lovely table - even though there were 2 lesser tables available. Our server was a delight! We began the evening with wonderful cocktails and an amazing scallop and leek salad. The only disappointment was they ran out of the crab risotto special - but the paella and the lamb dishes were scrumptious. It was a truly romantic and exceptional dinner - we will be back!

Had a wonderful evening eating at the bar overlooking the kitchen and getting "free" tips on how their amazing dishes are prepared. The food was wonderful, original and very well priced for the quality. Will be back very soon!

Used to go to Lauro about 2/mth. Went for a lunch and it took 30 miniutes for the cook to put the friggin pizza in the oven. I had to get it to go.

All the time, the "chef" who is supposed to be managing the kitchen was hangin out at the bar. Can't she flirt on her own time? The worst part is that I e-mailed the restaurant about my complaint and never heard back. I guess they don't care about service or their repeat customers.

Bummer.

My wife and I were very excited to check this restaurant out as we've been planning on going for a while. We arrived and the atmosphere and pre-dinner drinks were great. The menu and specials sounded awesome however things went downhill from here. The mussel appetizer was very good, not great, but good. The salads arrived about an hour (yes, an hour) after the appetizer. Such a delay is unacceptable, and the salads were decent, but not flavored appropriately and nothing to write home about. The biggest disappointment was our entree. We ordered a special of steelhead served over herb risotto. The steelhead was prepared well, however the risotto was more like cafeteria rice. Very wet, not flavorful and devoid of everything except a sparse sprinkle of DRIED herbs. It was really more of a wet, underdone rice than it was risotto. Definitely a huge disappointment for $19. We won't be back and would suggest that you spend your money at one of the more reliable (and incredible) restaurants that Portland has to offer

Usually it is very reliable and one of my top special occasion places to go. Always warm, inviting atmosphere and service, and the food is always solid, if not impressive. Went on Father's Day with our college daughter, who somehow had never been there before. Was really looking forward to a good meal, but the Seafood Paella I ordered, and the Salmon Ravioli our daughter ordered, both tasted incredibly salty. I couldn't even finish almost half of my dish, which is a very unusual occurrence for me! I let the waitress know, but didn't get much of a response. Well, we had room for dessert, which was pretty good--rhubard cobbler with ginger ice cream, although the scoop of ice cream was tiny! Our daughter summed it up--"won't be back." My wife and I will probably come back, but not for awhile.

Firstly, I'd like to say that they do take reservations. Your review says that they don't, but I just made them on a Friday morning at 10:00.

We have been there twice. Once it was mediocre, and the second time it was wonderful. We had a beef stew and the fish. Both were spiced nicely and cooked perfectly. The first time I had the paella. It was o.k., but maybe I expected too much. Also, we were squeezed in by the door, which sort of dampened our enthusiam. As I said though, they do take reservations now, so I don't expect that to happen again.

The spices were strong but balanced, the wine was great. We are going back for my birthday and taking the (older) kids.

This is my new favorite place to go eat for dinner. The food is wonderful, the atmosphere is great. It is very popular, so go early if you don't have reservations. Excellent food at mid range prices.

I have had the pleasure of dining at Lauro twice now, and I not been disappointed either time. The first time I had a chicken breast stuffed with goat cheese and greens, with a delectable sauce and very fresh green beans. It was one of the best meals I have had in a restaurant in a long time! My friend dining with me ordered the hamburger and fries, which were outstanding. The freshness and quality of the ingredients they use at Lauro is what makes it one of the best restaurants in Portland. The careful preparation of every component of the meal makes the most of the fresh, flavorful ingredients they use. I tried my friend?s hamburger and fries and returned to Lauro for lunch when I had a ?Hamburger craving." I was not disappointed on my return, this time I enjoyed eating outside and sipping lemonade while waiting for my lunch. Lauro is a very popular restaurant, moderately priced and high quality food. If you want to eat there on busy nights, be prepared to wait, but it is worth it.

I have been to Lauro many times and have enjoyed it 90% of the time. Even after a vacation to the mediteranian region, I was still impressed by their honest REAL food.

Your entrees are fairly priced however, your wines are WAY TOO MUCH MONEY. Please, be reasonable on your wine pricing and markup. Afterall, all you are doing is pouring it into a glass.

When I drop $80-$100 on a meal for two I expect the food to be very good or even fabulous. I found Lauro to be exceptionally mediocre. My salad was an odd mixture of fruit and vegetables and the flavors didn't really complement eachother. My husband, however, really enjoyed his salad. Of course that was after they brought the wrong one initially and got huffy when we asked for the one he'd ordered. Our server rarely came to our table, and seemed annoyed toward the end of our meal when we ordered desert. I think he was the bartender and was covering tables in someone's absence as well as making drinks for the room. While I am sympathetic to his stress, it negatively affected the overall mood of our meal. Overall, nothing was absolutely terrible, but I have many restaurants that I would choose over this one.

Excellent food inspired by the food of the Mediteranean. Service is good... food is usually excellent..only one bad experience when a braised bean dish was not cooked long enough (needs hours of cooking)

So, I do like this place; it?s the one place I come and splurge with a cocktail, starters, main course and desert with an espresso afterwards. The food has been always very good, and the atmosphere is always nice and warm, and relaxed. One of the main reasons I did like it so much is that it reminds me of a restaurant I used to eat at in France. So definitely a plus for the food and ambiance.
Now to the cons though: It used to have a great wine menu, with relatively reasonably priced wines. Now however, the wine list has exploded with over-priced wines, and a dinner for two has increased from about $100 to $130 (if you have three courses, a cocktail and a bottle of wine). Since David, the main chef and owner opened Vindaloh, he seems to be spending much of his time there (or at least NOT at Lauro?s) so the food quality is definitely slipping. The Portuguese pork used to be terrific, but now it?s a bit lackluster and loosing taste. The nightly specials are usually very good, but I feel that the restaurant is resting on it?s laurels now that it is established as a place with a good name. Shame.
So yes, I recommend it, but it is expensive, and the wine list is sadly becoming overpriced and limited. Hopefully someone from Lauros will read this and get the place back on course. It needs a quick steering adjustment.

The food was good here, but it wasn't the best. Prices are a little pricey, but I believe the portions were decent. Still worth a try, if you haven't been here before. It may have just been my choice of entree. You could have dinner here and walk over to Pix for dessert.

My buddy lives down the street from Lauro Kitchen. Based on convenience our friends often go there for dinner or order pizzas for takeout. I'm surprised to hear any negativity about staffing, as we have always had fun with the servers who work there. Maybe they like us because we visit often, I don't know. Besides that, the food is always superb. Lauro is probably one of the most consistent places in town for food quality. Just last week we ordered a couple pizzas that were absolutely delicious. We'll keep coming back unless things change for the worse.

The eastside is worth the trip for eating out. There are so many options with creative kitchens. This place has a big draw back, waiting for a table can be a challenge during the rush hour. The host seems to be inflexible on one evening for starting at the counter and moving to a table. Beware of the long waits.

This place is not even close to being great as it is hyped up to be. If I could this would have 0 stars but that is not an option. The food is not bad but the prices way too much. I've had way better for 5 bucks or less. The service was horrible and very slow. Not only was the service bad but the host was even worse he didn't know what he was doing and I waited for him to approach us for at least 10 min. or longer. The place is not big either and has a very bad location and is hard to find parking. They do have a lot that fits like 5 cars. So to put this in fewer words the wait is way too long for the cost of the food that isn't even that great, the service and host s uck, and the atmosphere of the place is horrible. This place su cks don't go there.

I love this restaurant as much as a human being can love a restaurant! I have had consistently great food (mussels, fish specials) and have always been really impressed with the service. The amiable hospitality from the minute you walk in the door is wonderful - Darren is a most gracious host! The servers are always knowledgeable and friendly, while remaining professional and they seem genuine and not scripted - I appreciate that. The food is ambitious without venturing into ridiculousness and sticks close to its Mediterranean roots. This is our neighborhood spot and we love it!

We've dined at their sister spot, Vindahlo, as well and the food has always been wonderful and we've had mostly great service there (one time it wasn't so great, both at the door and the table - but once is totally excusable).

What a pleasant surprise! Thanks to the Portland Magazine we found this marvelous restaurant in S.E. Portland. Everything we tried was delicious. Whatever you try, don't miss the mussel appetizer. The broth was so good, we actually sat and ate it until it was gone. The menu is delicious, and the daily specials are always interesting and equally tasty.

But, if you go hungry, as always seem to do, you will come home with leftovers, having ordered too much, as the portions are generous.

The service was friendly, knowledgable and efficient. We were never without water or other drinks. Our bread was refilled regularly and we never had to wait for the next course.

The prices are reasonable and the open kitchen adds to the friendly and warm surroundings.

We arrive early, and understand that if you come later, there may quite a wait, especially on the weekends.

My husband and I have lived in the Division neighborhood for three years. We were excited to see a friendly, modest, upscale restaurant open in our neighborhood. The seafood, pizza and winelist is superb! Try the Lauro cheeseburger! What a great meal for $10.00!!!! ( a HUGE extra-large burger and fries) And know it is a good, healthy meal or drive-thru a corporate mill of processed food (for $6.00) and wonder where it came from. I choose to go here! P.S. Try the paella it's great!!!

I have been to Lauro Kitchen at least 10 times now. I bring friends, family and clients! The secret to eating here is to order a salad to share and then lots of appetizers. There is no need to even order an entree - even though they are very yummy. The Beet salad is to die for - I didn't even know that I liked beets. The service is always good and I am NEVER disappointed.

I don't think so, however, ask to be seated at the food counter and your wait will be shorter than a glass or two at the bar. That's the way to do it and make it worth your while by ordering the seafood paela or shortribs that were so tender and better when paired with garlic mash. The place is loud and crowded, so think casual with time on your hands...last night, on a Monday it was slower and I had the most wonderful plates of fried calamari and mussels with chorizo. Matched to a romaine caesar with anchovy dressing and a wheat beer, it was superb! Last, but no least was the excellent service from Andrea who appeared at my elbow a minute after a plate was cleared. What timing!

I dinned tonight at Lauro and was very disappointed with the food and service. The service was very cold, almost robotic. I felt almost like it was a burden to serve me and I was a solo diner. The beet salad was not prepared fresh. It came straight from the refrigerator, ice cold, and void of flavor. The sole with pumpkin risotto was heavily laced with butter and other fats, completely overwhelming the fish and pumpkin I could not finish it. Overall, the whole experience was cold and un-fulfilling. For the market they are trying to reach, they fall quite short. I (as others here) would recommend a re-focus on fundamentals of welcoming their customers warmly and improve thier food quality for the market they want to target.

If you want to spend $14 on a saucer of pasta then this is it! Where was the butternut squash filling? Flavor? I have never left a place hungry before. Ordered dessert just to stave off the growls in my tum-tum. A saucer of flattened apple crisp (though it tasted good) wasn't enough to please the local canary. Service was good and the ginger martinis are great....but, doesn't make up for the lack of portion. Who are they kidding?

Usually, I'm GUARANTEED a good experience for my dollar here no matter what day of the week I go. Unfortunately, on my last visit, things were far less than polished. The hostes was testy, the waitress inaccurate and the bartender condescending. Along with wrong dishes and drinks, the price was not as tolerable this time around. C+ seems to be the grade now.

Lauro has been packed every night for the past 2-1/2 years from opening to closing - and people keep going back for more, even with a 1 - 2 hour wait. And I can tell you why - the food is delicious, fresh, comforting fare and the cocktails and wine are top-notch. We have brought friends from out of town there time after time and when they come back to Portland, that's where they want to go again. We've probably been to Lauro more times than anyone, and never had a bad experience -

Three of us had dinner here the other night. 2 of the 3 meals were awfule. I had the clams linguini which was far to spicy. Another friend had a chicken with goat cheese and spinich, the flavors clashed so much that the dish was not even consumable. The only meal that was any good was the porkloin. We waited over an hour and a half and while they did give us the fried squid we felt the price and service did not warrent the reputation. We will not be returning and won't be recommending this place to out friends.

This was the second time at Lauros and was much more impressed this time. The saffron and lamb kabab was amazing! Because you cannot make reservations, we went on a thursday night and a little earlier than most of the dinner crowd. We were seated promptly and the service was good the whole night. Will go back to this neighborhood restaurant in the future.

I have been to the Lauro kitchen twice. The drinks are awesome and the bartender is very friendly & professional. However, the food is lacking. The first time I ordered a prawn & rice dish and it was very bland . The second time I visited I ordered a side salad and a scallop special, only to realize upon arrival that I had ordered an appetizer. I received 2.5 scallops. The wait staff did not suggest any remedy. Then when I asked to re-order she made me wait. I sat through my group's entire meal with no contact with wait staff. I will not be back and certainly do not recommend this restaurant for dinner. Though for drinks... the atmosphere is lovely.

Cons: Food , Service

I ate at Lauro before the stellar review. Most of the food was a little off, but the atmosphere was great, the service and wine very good. Went back recently to give a second chance, atmosphere, service, wine still all good. Food really bad. Chef was walking around talking to tables all night. Maybe he should spend some time supervising the food coming out of the kitchen instead. Our complaints about the food were ignored. After looking at previous reviews I see I'm not the only one. It's too bad, we will not return.

I visited Lauro with friends for the 4th time. this is my favorite spot to eat in PDX. I ordered the Mediterranean Mussels and Chouriço in Cataplana and they were outstanding! about 20 to 25 mussels in a wonderfully spiced sausage and tomato stew. The best mussels i've ever eaten. A friend ordered the Calamari with Portuguese Piri Piri Sauce which was excellent as well. The Culotte Steak with Wild Mushrooms and Potato Gratin i ordered was cooked to medium rare perfectly and the mushrooms were quite a treat. I had the pleasure of trying my girlfriend's Braised Lamb Shoulder with Creamy Polenta, Tomatoes and Olives and that was probably the most flavorful and tender lamb i've ever tried and the polenta was exceptional. Staff was knowledgable as always. expect a long wait if you visit on the weekend. best time to go is weekdays around 7:30pm.

What a sad surprise! After reading the Willamette Week's glowing praise of Lauro, my friends and I were really looking forward to a wonderful meal in one of the city's newest hot spots. Although the amosphere was great, I'm afraid I can't say the same about either the food or the service. After waiting more than an hour and a half for a table (there is only one table that can seat six), we inquired about the possibility of moving two tables together, and were treated with downright hostility. There are so many fabulous restaurants in Portland that will not only serve you a great meal, but give you the sense they'd like you to keep coming back. Unfortunately, Lauro is not one of them.

I was extremely dissappointed in the service we received. We go there often, understand it's very popular right now and endured an hour long wait for our table. We were not told that our meal was be delayed due to the nature of our order and when we inquired and suggested mentioning that in the menu or ahead of time, we were treated with a nonchalance that was very irritating. There is no excuse for a year-old establishment to treat customers this way.

The food and service are absolutely NOT WORTHY of the money they are charging. This place is spendy and the wait is uncomfortable and long due to the teeny tiny bar and nonexistent waiting area. When I pay this much money for food I expect fireworks for my senses. But since the food was only fair to midlin,' the sticker shock of our dinner only compounded our disappointment. Our waitress was inattentive to us.
Every time I drive by this restaurant I want to tell the people waiting to please spend their money elsewhere. I believe what patrons end up paying for at Lauro are the atmosphere and the bragging rights of eating at a trendy, new restaurant. And that is all.

We happened upon Lauro by accident. However, it was great. It was able to suit the blending of my two families very well (one side is very traditional, and not too adventurous, the other full on foodies).

The tagine was a touch dry, and the chorizo in the paella the same, but it did not affect the flavor or even our enjoyement! It can get a bit loud, so if you want a nice quiet place, this isn't it.

Our server was incredible, prompt and very polite. It was great fun!

I think Lauro Kitchen is the best overall value of any "upscale" resturant in Portland. For my dollar spent and quality of ingrediants and preperation, I vote for Lauro Kitchen!

Lauro is an enjoyable eatery. Yes it is loud at times, but I don't go out to eat to avoid people. Our drinks were very good, and our dinners were great. We very much liked everything about the place ... especially the Chicken Tangine. The flavors of cilantro, green olives and saffron were fabulous.

Hands down, the food here is great. Dishes are true to the style and focus of the restaurant and a value for the price. Service is great and the space is delightful, if a bit industrial.
The problem is that crazy "no reservations" policy. I'm spending big bucks to come here and don't appreciate being made to wait outside like an obese family at the "Old Country Buffet." The not so subtle message this sends is, "We care more about raking in as much dough as we can, than we do about developing a long term relationship with a customer." I'd like to eat her often, we live close by, but there are many other great places to eat in town that value my time. Why go back and stand on the sidewalk here!

Tried it last night based on the steady flow of traffic and happy looking dinners. I had the special of Halibut Cheeks on Spanish rice. The sauce that covered everything over powered the entire dish. My date had the stuffed chicken, which was average at best. While the service and atmosphere were both excellent, the food prompted the decision to stay away in the future. For the price, I expected better fair.

The steak and frites were exceptional....perfectly done, and the sauce was to die for! Also the cambazola cheese/elephant garlic/flatbread app was excellent - good choice for 3 to share. Lamb shank not the best I've ever had, but tasty, and can't pass-up occasion for lamb taste-test. Bartender friendly; atmosphere pleasant. Could use a "waiting" section - tables to close to door and drafty. We opted to eat at the cocktail bar. Good wine list and special cocktails.

There is a reason why a wait can be expected at Lauro. SUCCESS!.... The authentic Mediterranean style cusine is the finest Portland has ever seen. Each dish was unique, succulent and presented beautifully and the portions are quite substantial. It was obvious to taste that Machado uses only the best fresh, local, seasonal ingredients. Items not to miss are the mussels with chorizo, pancetta wrapped radicchio, true seafood paella, braised lamb shank, goat cheese stuffed chicken, and the daily creative fish specials. The staff was extremely professional, sincere and very attentive, definitely some of the best I've experienced in the Northwest. Their exstensive wine knowledge, helped me choose a fabulous, affordable bottle. The prices are a great value for the wonderful food, friendly staff and warm atmosphere. I highly recommend dining at Lauro to see for yourself thier proven success will exceed your expectations!

DISAPPOINTMENT! They dont take reservations and we were rudely told that if they did, theyd be fully booked and we wouldnt even be standing there. If youre lucky enough to find a space at the overcrowded bar for the 1-2 hour wait, the house drinks are a good choice. Theyll help lighten the mood while youre briskly shuffled out of the way by the waitstaff.

Appetizers: Mussels, Beet Salad, and Soup were average. Entrees: Steak (very bland) w/fries; Pork Loin w/Fig/Orange/Sauce (overcooked and accompanying vegetables completely flavorless); Pasta w/scallops (blah, yet again). Skip desert there and head across the street to Pix for a real treat.

We felt the dining experience was mediocre at best despite the steady stream of people WAITING for a table. A case of the emperor's new clothes?? There are too many far superior restaurants in Portland to waste your time, money and tastebuds at Lauro

Lauro's offers a little something for everyone. There are burgers and fries, pizza for the kids (and of course the adults, too!), and more creative dishes such as the goat cheese stuffed chicken breast with quince sauce served over spinach. Tasty. I've eaten here at least six or seven times, and can honestly say have never had anything that didn't impress me. Just like any restaurant, some dishes are better...more flavorful. Still, the ingredients are fresh and simple, generally making for enjoyment of whatever your selection may be. My ONLY reservation about Lauro is the wait...takes forever! By 6pm, a table for two was a one hour wait. Ridiculous! And...they do not take reservations! Overall, great value on the food, good service, and hey, Pix is just across the street, serving wine and beer while you wait for your table, if you decide to stick it out.

We stopped in right after Lauro's opened. We had a specialty drink that was amazing! Unfortunately, we already had dinner plans, but decided to come back for dinner another time. The wait can be horrendous, but worth it. The menu is diverse, the wine selection is great, and the staff are great. My meal wasn't exactly what I expected, but was still a tasty entree. We will definitely go back!!
