We live in the neighborhood and were completely disappointed. We went on Sunday night for dinner. Initially we had to wait to be seated. We had to wait to order our bottle of wine, and then had to wait 15 more min before it was brought to the table. The owner apologized for the wait but nothing changed. He commented it was busy-really? I would say that 20% of the tables were full. I hate to see what "busy" really means.

Our food was boring and tasteless. The guac and salsa were ok-small portion of chips. When we asked for more chips all hell broke loose. I mentioned the wait time and the waitstaff had a major attitude. I thought we were the customer? The owner came over and was very unprofessional-typical Portland response. He then proceeded to interupt us with his condescending tone throughout our dinner. At one point my husband had to tell him to leave.

I had the smoked pork ribs-they were tough and the sauce tasted like something out of a kraft bottle of pre-made sauce-yuck! My husband's medium-rare steak was a piece of rubber and fat stuck on a huge portion of boring mashed potatoes and overcooked greens. The best part of the meal was the strawberry sorbet.

Would not reccommend this place for any meal!

Pros: location, atmosphere

Cons: unappetizing food, poor service

Good happy hour. Otherwise, food is decent, but prices a bit too much for what you get. Great location in Sellwood.

egg white omlette sitting in a pool of grease. not appealing. Wait staff nice and attentive though. Need to work on food prep. someone ordering egg whites probably doesn't want them bathed in grease.

My fiancee and I went to Springwater Grill tonight hoping to experience another great restaurant in our neighborhood and were completely disappointed.

We were greeted by a server who tried to take our drink order before we were even seated at the table. The rest of the service can't honestly be faulted since they explained they were shorthanded and were obviously sprinting to get to the next table.

We started with the calamari which was fairly tasty except for the cup of lightly spiced, green tinted mayonnaise they served it with. My fiancee ordered the crab cake entree, while I had the rainbow trout. The crab cakes seemed straight from the freezer with a thick breading and deep fried until dark brown. They were enough to turn the stomach. Her rice was blended with what appeared to the same mayo that came with the calamari and finished with two heaping glops of what definitely was the mayo. Her entire plate sat in a puddle of oil.

My rainbow trout was acceptable except for the shear volume of oil it was cooked in. The green beans came out in the consistency you can only expect from the can. My coconut rice came out without the mayo dressing, so I did have something to fill my stomach and absorb the rest of the mess.

The bar area really looks cute and we may stop in for a drink at another time but will never drop $60 for two at this greasy spoon again.

I have been there a few times before for brunch , we took our out of towners to brunch last weekend and we really enjoyed the brunch. You get fresh fruit and breads (includes banana, pumpkin?) and a list of breakfast/brunch and a nice list of lunches for a good price. it is in Selllwood neighborhood so you can continue to shop and enjoy the day . I am going to see what dinner is like next

My mom, sister & I ate here on Saturday night after having a negative service experience elsewhere in Sellwood. I've been here once before with my husband & their salmon tacos for lunch were wonderful. Upon leaving Saturday night my mom & sister were fans of the restaurant, as well. Our waitress was very nice which was a pleasant relief. I love the decor of this place. It's obviously upper scale as you walk in but not stuffy. They've created several different eating areas within one large room in a clever way that really makes it feel more intimate. Visually, the bar is a delight. My mom had a vegan stew that she raved about while my sister had a salmon dish & I had the hazelnut-crusted trout. All 3 dishes were enjoyed tremendously by each of us. The wine list was substantial without being overwhelming and they have a few more value-priced wines by the glass mixed in which is always nice to see. Having been to Italy, I know wine doesn't have to cost $10 a glass to be good & it's refreshing to know some restaurants in our area understand that, as well (albeit not many). Definitely give this place a try; for lunch or dinner, it's a sure thing.

Just showing up, or coming in with a big crowd? You got a great place for a Sunday brunch, afternoon light snack or the biggest meal of the day. The menu is simple, the choices delectable, yet your meal portions are always negotiable with the servers and I've never been disappointed with the preparation, the presentation, or the timing. These folks know what they're doing, care about your experience, and make sure you've got what you want. There's enough room between server visits to talk and eat, and they're always around for the short run needs like mustard, more coffee, or a dessert menu. I've never been disappointed or left hungry in the 10 or 12 times that I've visited. On a "Fancy Scale" you can come casual or dressed for a concert and still expect tip top treatment. 10 being stuffed-shirt fancy, 1 being a burger joint sitting outside with grease running off your elbow, I'd put them at about a 7.5. Enjoy!

Pros: Great food, great service, right priced.

Cons: It can be a bit dark - but you'll find yourself staring at the flying gecko. . . if you can find him.

This has become our favorite restaurant in town, since it is reasonably priced enough to go frequently, but nice enough to feel like a night out. They've always been great with our daughter and the core staff are fantastic.

As far as Westmoreland goes, I would place Springwater as miles ahead of Caprial's and Gino's (Papa Hydn's is still the best, but you pay a lot more for it).

My husband and I went there for happy hour. They were supposed to open at 4:30. We arrived at 4:30 and the doors were locked. It was a rainy day and I was on crutches. The person behind the bar looked at us when we waved at him in hopes that he would open the door. He looked right at me and immediately looked away. (I know he saw the crutches) I can understand if they weren't ready for customers but they should have let us in and told us it would be a few minutes. We waited until 4:40 and then gave up. We've eaten here before and the happy hour food was pretty good. We've never had the greatest service but it was never this bad. We will not go back. The food is decent but not good enough to ignore the poor customer service. There are much better places in West Moreland to eat where you will be treated right.

Possibly the rudest and slowest service I've gotten anywhere. Went there at 12 for brunch. While the restaurant was busy, it wasn't full. After getting seated, we ordered a coffee and mint tea and waited for close to 20 minutes for the waitress to come back. My wife and I had decided to leave when the waitress finally came back. She started to place the menus on our table and angrily swiped them away as she saw us standing. She made up an excuse that she got occupied by a large party and that we didn't have to eat there. Please note that at this point that we didn't say a word to this waitress. She offered no apologies, and by her action and body language, my wife and I didn't feel that we had any choice but to leave the restaurant. We left without saying a word. It was if the waitress was kicking us out. I've eaten at a lot of Portland area restaurants, including many in the Sellwood area, but this takes the cake for me as possibly the rudest treatment I've ever experienced. I can't comment on the food but the service is so below any level of acceptability that I can think of. Please note that other reviewers have noted the slow and poor service.

This restaurant is in the heart of trendy Sellwood. They've got the best fresh-squeezed lemonade around. Staff is attentive and friendly. I've been able to order only a beverage and hold a biz mtg without feeling pressured to buy anything else. I'll go here again.

You can't bet their happy hour at $2.50 for a full-size serving. I love the bbq pork sandwich and the salmon tacos. Brunch is also fabulous at $7.95. Try the salmon benedict. It comes with bread, fresh fruit, and home fried potatoes. The bloody mary was pretty darn good too. Springwater Grill has become a family favorite.

Yes it was a special but very good. Hollandaise tastes like it has sour cream in it and is very creamy. Brunch is 7.95 for anything on the menu which is a true value in the day on $12-14 breakfast other places in town. Good place to have brunch on Sunday.

Best deal for Springwater Grill is brunch by far. It has been hit and miss at dinner time here but never at brunch.
You do have to take the service with a grain of salt - ALWAYS SLOW. Not sure if they are understaffed or just bad, but it always takes forever. Not overly friendly either from the hostess on back.
Food during breakfast is great and a steal at $7. Must admit the BBQ pork is fantastic.
We'll continue to go here, just not when were in a rush.

01/17/06 - Service has improved and food quality just keeps getting better. We like the improvements in staff.

My family just returned from the Springwater Grill a couple of hours ago. Other posters are right in saying that the service is slow. There were only 5 more tables full in the whole 30 tables restaurant and our food and service still took a long time. There were 2 waiters and the owner (I guess) helping all the tables but no one got their food fast.
The ambience is very nice and the place is clean.
However the food is pretty good but not good enough to make up for the slow service. We probably won't be back.

We found this place while looking for a bite before a movie, it was wonderful. The service was very friendly and fast. Their happy hour is a great value, only $2.50 per plate. We returned for dinner, delicious (we ordered the salmon and rib eye). They not only accept the Entertainment card, they allow you to return and use it repeatedly! A true value.

Happened upon this place while looking for a bite to eat before catching a movie at the Moreland. The Happy Hour menu was very yummy and a lot of food and cheap! We told the server we had only a short time before the movie started and she had our food and check to us in just a few minutes. The food was served very hot and outstandingly good. One of our party left his laptop/briefcase in the restaurant and the hostess tracked us down in the movie theater to return it. Now THAT is service!!!!

I was very upset to find that upon ordering the high priced crab cake appetizer, it contained pieces of imitation crab meat! The only saving grace to the dinner was the rack of lamb special.

after 3 visits, the last being on valentine's day, I feel compelled to offer my opinion on this wonderful little place. first, the food is fantastic- fresh, not too subtle or overpowering. the atmosphere is nice and relaxed. the kicker though, and I am not sure what to attribute this to, but every time I've been here I leave the place feeling miles better than when I arrived. a big part of it would be the staff, who have always been exemplary. not comfort food, quite, but definitely a comfort establishment. (I recommend a scotch and creme brulee for dessert, by the way)

Don't let the shady sellwood location fool you. this place is high class. Fresh ingredients make for wonderful dishes and cocktails. Considering the ingredients and time required prices are reasonable. Wait time was conserderable, but the food is freshly prepared and delicious. Finish your meal with a fresh sorbet. Yum yum. Entertainment card is accepted so entrees appetizers, cocktails, and desert for two cost $40 not bad for such a place.
