My wife and I ate at the Blacksmith last night for the first (and last) time. After arriving at the suggested reservation time we were made to wait almost a half hour before being seated. After that, we found the staff to be courteous and attentive and the spinach salad, prepared at tableside, to be very good. However, sadly, we were both very disappointed with the Rancher's Ribeye. Although it was touted as 16 oz., after the fat, gristle, and other inedible parts were trimmed away, it was more like half that size. My wife commented that the steak knives were not very sharp but, as it turned out, the resistance was with the beef. The flavor was excellent, to be sure, but after a while, it was just not worth the effort to try to isolate a bite that was not chewy to some degree. After mentioning this in response to the waiter's query about the meal, he passed this information to the chef. The answer he came back with was something about organically raised corn fed beef producing steaks that were 35% fat and to overcome this fact we should have ordered it medium rather than medium rare. While it is understood that ribeyes are fattier than other cuts, we have had a lifetime of ribeye steaks, all medium rare, and none of them required more doneness than that. Even cutting steaks from a ribeye roast from Costco rendered wonderfully tender steaks off the BBQ grill. The waiter went on to recommend that we order New York steak next time. Yeah, OK, but it won't be from The Blacksmith Restaurant.

We asked around town and were told by most everyone that this is the best restaurant in town, and we would have to agree! We had gone with a taste for steak, but the fish dishes looked too good to pass-up... so we ordered the King Salmon and the Trout. Both dishes were exceptional! I had the Salmon, which was a nice portion with scallops and muscles on a potato cake... excellent! My wife had the Trout which was also quite tasty. We sat in a nice cozy booth by the window and had a few glasses of wine from their ample wine list. Our server was quite friendly. Would highly recommend this place!

Being a Bend native I often travel to Portland for the culture of a big city. But thankfully one evening I stumbled into The Blacksmith, and within moments I knew I had found a local business that would soothe my thirst for the big-city, right here in my little town filled with flannels and patagonia jackets, I had found a little piece city nestled on the edge of downtown.

The Blacksmith does one thing better than any other restaurant here in town, the ambiance. It's unique, cozy and urban with the glowing marble bar that immediately sets the mood when you walk-in. Whether I'm looking for a night out with my ladies, the lounge serves as a great place to catch-up, or if I'm looking to have a great meal with my 8-year-old son. I simply make a reservation in the anvil room, and they are MORE than accommodating to my rugrat, which is not always the case at most "upscale" restaurants.

Columbine is the best bartender in town, and as far as severs go ask for Amber, she has never disappointed us, and is probably the most attentive server I've ever had. And in case you've never been, happy hour is amazing, gourmet food for only a few bucks!! If you haven't been... you must go!

This place get's a big fat "I" for inconsistent. Last night (Sept 5th, 2009) we had an absolutely fabulous experience at this restaurant. The service was spectacular, the ambiance was great and most importantly the food was just out of this world. It was so good, we went back again tonight (Sept 6th, 2009).

Let me start by saying the service was absolutely horrendous! We were seated in the lounge while we waited for a table in the dining room. We ordered two cocktails, which took 20 minutes to come out and also ordered an appetizer, the tuna poke, which took another 20 minutes to come out!! No joke. The tune poke was delicious, which is why we decided to stick it out and hope the service would improve. It didn't.

The steak I had last night was so good I could not help myself but order it again. Seriously, it was that good. So, after waiting another 45 minutes for our meal to arrive, the steak was over-cooked, cold, and the scallop sauce was ice cold. No joke. it was horrible. I sent it back immediately and was told "we could get another one out is much less time than it took to get this one out". So that begs the question, why wouldn't you bring the first one out quickly instead of letting it overcook on the hot plate? Seriously?

After one hour and forty minutes, we had three drink, three appetizers and a $50 bill. Not cool!!

Bottom line here is this place is h1t or miss. Last night was a h1t but tonight missed by a mile. A HUGE disappointment! i hope you have a better experience.

This is one of my favorite places in Bend. I've been for happy hour, dinner and their late night after hours for dancing. Typically a great crowd with some of the best service and food to match. The value is great and is not as expensive as you might think for the level of atmosphere and service you receive. If you get the chance I highly recommend it.

Pros: best drinks in town, and great appitizers!

Cons: spendy but worth it

.

We went for their cerviche. Two were good the other two barely edible. The waiter had too many tables and the bus people not on top of their game. Waited for water, tables not cleared of used dishes. Drinks were outstanding I can especially recommend the Marteau absinthe. The lighting was inadequate.
For the price we will not be returning...what a disappointment.

My wife and I just had our third dinner at the Blacksmith and every time it has just been amazing. We moved here a couple of months ago and just love this place. The bar is incredible when you walk in, a real showpiece. They have a good alcohol selection and some really interesting cocktails. I've sat at the bar a couple of times by myself and the service has always been very friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. The bar has a different menu than the main dining room with more of a pub fare such as hamburgers and tacos. I would say they have the best hamburger in town. The dining room is really cozy and the steaks are unbelievable. My filet melted in my mouth. The macaroni and cheese is beyond delicious. You have to get the chocolate cake, it is just decadent and delicious. The wine list is good and not too much to read through. This is my favorite restaurant in Bend, I've loved everything I've ever had there.

We go here for all of our special family occassions. You need to make reservations and can sometimes get in without one, but definitely call ahead. The menu changes regularly and is always a treat to taste something new.

After a very disappointing experience at Cork the previous night, my fiance and I ventured out to Blacksmith. We got there at 4:30pm so only the lounge was open, but the Ambiance was great, if a little pretentious. The server / bartender, however, was super down-to-earth and let us taste a couple of different wines. My fiance was stoked to see that they not only had ceviche, but a ceviche MENU. He ordered three different kinds and LOVED all three. I'm a vegetarian and ordered the roasted pepper pizza ---with the peppers, carmelized onions, smoked cheese, ultra thin crust & I don't know what other magical ingredients it is NOT to be missed. Go during happy hour like we did and try a lot of food without breaking the bank!

How could you not love this place. The service is excellent because of the caring and knowledgeable people who greet you with genuine and friendly personalities. I feel pampered when I'm at The Blacksmith. The food is to die for good! The new smoker is an excellent addition. I enjoy the consistency that is exercised throughout this establishment and personally rank this as the finest restaurant in Bend.
I have visited almost all of the trendy little joints in town, and with 20 years of food service experience feel qualified to say, they were good but not great. I see The Blacksmith going the extra mile to please. I feel people are used to turn -n- burn / in & out service and not relaxing to absorb the subtle nuances a great restaurant can offer. So turn off your brain and let your servers guide you through this dining pleasure. My guests and I have never regretted it. Bravo Blacksmith!!

So incredibly and sadly disappointed. The waitress was gracious and service was fine, but the food was mediocre to poor. I can?t speak to the full service dinner, but the small inventive happy hour menu certainly raised expectations. We ordered the Sonoma roll, a cured Kobe beef laced California-style roll, mussels in ancho sauce, and oysters on the half shell. The Sonoma roll came first, beautifully plated but lacking any distinct flavor, or subtle complexity. The oysters and mussels came next. I have never had oysters on the half shell served so close to room temperature. I ate only two before abandoning the effort. They didn?t taste off, but the mignonette sauce didn?t compliment the tepid oysters and again, they were not icy cold and thus tasted more of the shoreline than the clean ocean. The mussels, plain and simple, were not debearded. Each overcooked mussel came with a mouthful of tough, fibrous, fishy tasting mussel beard.

I have looked forward to visiting this restaurant after reading so many fantastic reviews. Having been to many great restaurants all over the country, I realize that all of them have bad days. But to have three not inexpensive happy hour dishes turn out so poorly, I can?t bring myself to experiment with their dinner menu, let alone recommend this restaurant to a friend.

So sad.

This is yet another in a long line of Bend restaurants that try to come off as "fine dining", but miss the mark.

The food is good but not great. It's well-prepared but not wonderfully prepared. The service is adequate but not outstanding. The ambiance is friendly and quaint but not upscale.

The only thing it has in common with fine dining restaurants is the price. Meaning, it's overpriced for what they provide you, since the quality isn't fine dining. Not a bad place to try if you can't travel to a real city/are stuck with Bend options, but not a place I'd frequent regularly.

Having just recently relocated to Bend we were trying many different restaurants. This one will not be visited again. Service terrible, food less the average and tiny portions ( my main course fish dish was about 1 inch square, dry and frozen). Martini was watered down and coffee was less quality than any fast food establishment. Bar was stylish but that is it. Not impressed and anyone who is does not know "Good Food or Service. Too many other great experiences in Bend to waste time here.

I've visited The Blacksmith several times over the last few years and I've always been pleased with my experience. So it was a no brainer for my wife and I to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary at The Blacksmith. This time we were pleasantly surprised to see a newly menu! After getting a few drinks at their swank bar my wife and I sat down at a great table overlooking the rest of the main dining room. Our server was prompt in attending to us and very helpful pointing out the new additions and options to the menu. The first thing I noticed was the selection of steaks offered. What really impressed me were the different cattle ranches The Blacksmith partners with to bring high quality cuts of all natural beef to the table. For my wife and I it was an easy choice: The bone-in Porterhouse for two from a local ranch in eastern Oregon.

With our Porterhouse we selected two side dishes from the ala cart menu offering up to 15 different side options! All are unique. We settled on the White Truffle Mac n' Cheese and the Smoked Cheddar Gnocchi. Both were absolutely sinful and complimented our steak to perfection.

Speaking of steak...the Porterhouse was cooked perfectly and served with a subtle mushroom demi featuring wild mushrooms. I've eaten a lot of steaks in my day from world class steak houses in Chicago and New York and this steak ranks right up there with them. It's truly a treat to find a fine dining restaurant in Bend that knows how to prepare a quality steak.

Believe it or not we had no room for dessert but then again who needs dessert when you just ate a meal fit for a king (and queen)!

Nice work Blacksmith. Keep up the good work!!

We were greeted immediately, and we asked if we could sit in the lounge, which has comfortable leather couches, and low lighting. Very nice. We ordered some drinks and small plates.

My wife and I hadn't found any places in town where we can both be served upscale examples of our favorite drinks until we found The Blacksmith. I'm a self-admitted beer snob, and she's into vodka. They had Dogfish Head's 90 Minute IPA and Victory's Prima Pils on 2 of their 12 tap handles. They also have a well-chosen, unique bottle list ... haven't seen this anywhere else in town. My wife had an Habanero-infused cocktail that she very much enjoyed as well.

On the small plates front, we had the surf and turf and ceviche of the day. The surf and turf is a very tasty sushi-grade tuna sitting beside some steak carpaccio. The ceviche was absolutely delicious.

I like the layout of the restaurant because the bar is nicely separated from the main dining room, but everything is accessible. This is a hip, comfortable, service-oriented restaurant that my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed. We will definitely be going back to again to try dinner in the main dining area.

We went to the Blacksmith last night and I must say I felt like I was transported to New York City or Las Vegas! The ambience is stunning and the food and service was top notch. We were handled with incredible professionalism by an extremely knowledgable staff. The cocktail list is very creative with a wine list to satisfy the most safisticated palate. The in house sommelier paired a Pinot Noir I have never heard of with our Cheesesteak and Cider Brined Pork Chop that was the best food wine pairing I have ever experienced. We are now regulars!

My favorite place to go for Happy Hour in Bend Oregon is the newly redesigned Blacksmith Restaurant. The bar menu rocks with items like lobster corn dogs, Kobe beef burgers, gourmet hot dogs, ceviche of the day, and so on all for affordable prices. Plus they have 12 beers on tap that only cost $3. It's my new hang out.

I highly recommend the Blacksmith not only for Happy Hour but for one of the best dining experiences in Bend Oregon.

Wow~ This place is excellent! From the ambiance of the old world style to the terrific food, you can't go wrong here. Our steaks were melt in your mouth, cut-with a fork good, the sides all yummy, especially the mac and cheese. The kobe meatloaf was to die-for, and I don't even like meatloaf :-).
Try the kobe corndogs for an appetizer; you'll be pleasantly surprised. Waitstaff was attentive and fun.
Can't say enough good things about this place!

Try the kobe corndogs for an appetizer; you'll be pleasantly surprised. Waitstaff was attentive and fun.
Can't say enough good things about this place!

We made a reservation a month in advance for this new restaurant in Bend, OR called Blacksmith to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We arrived and they did not have our reservation and said on a Saturday that they could not accommodate us. I asked for the Manager. The hostess stepped over to what appeared to be the owner in a Chef outfit, explained the situation and came back and said sorry, there is nothing we can do for you (even after we told the hostess it was our 10th anniversary). The owner did not even have the courtesy to address us directly or offer an apology. So I stepped over to talk to him myself to explain the situation and that we made the reservation over a month ago. He was at best indifferent about it, bordering rude. He asked who my wife had spoken to. She actually had the name and gave it to him. He said "oh that was my bookkeeper". Even after providing the name, showing that we had called, he still made no effort to accommodate us and was abrupt like we were inconveniencing him. We left abruptly telling him we would not be back. All he had to do was offer some apologetic explanation and maybe a courtesy $50 gift certificate for our next visit, but instead we got ?attitude?. Not a great way to operate in a competitive and growing market like Bend. We left and had a fantastic experience at the Sunriver lodge, as unusual. Stay away from Blacksmith. They obviously do not appreciate the customer.

Cons: horrible service

I'm new to the area (moved here from the Bay area) and have been working my way through the many different establishments in town and this is the first one I've been impressed enough with to write a review. I went last night with a friend for a casual night out. We started with a couple of drinks in the bar, which is comfortable and not too loud (or a meet market) like some of the places in town. After drinks we were seated in the main dining room - warm lighting and comfortable seating. Our server was prompt and knowledgeable about the menu as we had a few questions. There are some mouth watering dishes on the menu and it was difficult to pick just one. I was very impressed with the timing as everything seemed to come out as if on queue - this was a first for me in Bend.

Apps: Dungeness Crab Corn Dogs - WOW - this is definitely something I've never had before - very yummy.
Salad: Caesar - the polenta croutons were a great touch and delicious
Main: Cider Brined Pork Rob Chops - I grew up with pork chops but not quite like this (sorry mom) - I've never had pork this tender and I can't leave off the mac and cheese - I couldn't get enough of this gift from the dairy gods.
Desert: We got the chocolate sampler for two and this is one of those dishes that is so good looking you feel like you are defacing a work of art. Despite the presentation we dove into our sugary delight. The fondue with Oregon berries was just awesome.

Overall the presentation was outstanding and the food was delicious. Needless to say, I'll be back. The Blacksmith is at the top of my list in Bend.

Pros: Great food and Service; Comfortable bar;

Cons: Might be difficult to get into on the weekends - Would recommend a reservation

We first went to the blacksmith over a year ago and the food was great. The service was pretty good but nothing outstanding. We went back to Bend again recently and decided to try again. WOW! We couldn't believe all of the changes. The food was still great, but the place has almost doubled size and has a full bar now. The hostess was a little spacey but once we got seated the service was outstanding, right down to the Oregon wine recommendations. Don't forget to ask for a side of mac n cheese. It's the most incredible mac you've ever had!!! Enjoy.

Pros: Best food in town. Great location down town.

Cons: Hard to get reservations on Friday.

After reading the other reviews around myself and three other gentlemen chose to have a nice dinner here. Everything was great until it took 45 MINUTES for us to recieve our orders!! The restuarant wasnt even that busy. Every table around us was served before us and they were all seated after us. When we asked the waitress what was taking so long she replied "that all of their food is prepared from scratch by hand". I am sorry but go tell that to the 13 people around us who are eating already! Even all that we could of over looked but the food was not that impressive! You could get a better steak at the neighborhood butcher! Not to mention when the server asks "what salad would you like with with your meal" be sure you realize that they charge extra for that salad, or at least they did us. Overall I would say save your money, you would be better off going anywhere other than there!!!!!!

We really enjoyed our dinner here. The atmosphere was hip, our food was very good and interesting, and our server was pleasant. We are planning on going again next time we visit Bend.

We had read Conde Nast's rave review, touting this restaurant as among a number of best new restaurants in the world. The food was good, but not phenomenal, as you would expect from the review. And the otherwise lovely ambience was overshadowed by the waitstaff's constant clattering of dishes. We had to stop all conversation at least four times due to what seemed like dishes breaking just over the barrier. For the money, try somewhere else. You might even have cash left over

We were very disappointed with our trip to the Blacksmith. We were seated for over 20 minutes before our waitress even acknowledged us. After waiting over a half an hour after receiving our drinks for our food to arrive, with no more attention from our waitress, we paid for our drinks and left. The wait might have been bearable had anyone acknowledged us sitting there with out food, but that never happened. The resturant was very busy but if they did not have the staff to wait on all of the customers they should have not seated us--we saw plenty of other tables receiving service, and also at least two other tables giving up and leaving too. The food going by looked nice, but it was not worth the wait or the rude waitstaff.

I am a total food snob, and proud of it, and have lived in many places across the US and in Western and Eastern Europe and have visited many other places and the food at the Blacksmith restaurant is right on top with some of the best places in Europe or the US. I just had the Coq au Vine and it was totally different than the traditional dish I know from France, but exquisite in tast and flavors and presentation. I have had quite a few of the entres and one is better than the other. They also make the best creme brulee. I highly recommend it , the food undoubtedly is the best in Bend and so is the service and ambiance. If you only have one day for a fancy dinner choose this over Medinda's, Blue Fish or Cork !!!

My wife and I dined at the Blacksmith Restaurant for a special occasion recently, and were extremely impressed and surprised by their amazing cocktails. My wife had a few absolutely beautiful martinis off of their exotic cocktail menu, and I ordered a few classics which came out just perfect. The Blacksmith is well known for their great steaks, but I would also like to suggest that those of you planning a dinner at their establishment, to take advantage of the new bar and cocktail menu. You won't be dissappointed.

Everything is good at the Blacksmith; just be sure to arrive hungry because the portions are huge, the tastes amazing with a wonderful wine list....It would be difficult to have a bad time there as there is just something in the air that feels great, fun, even nurturing. For instance, a friend forgot her glasses and was having a difficult time reading the menu and suddenly one of the owners casually set a pair of reading glasses on the table in front of her, smiled and went on about greeting his other patrons...That's class!!!!.
They needn't bother to serve knives with the steaks; the meat is so tender! Everything is beyond great, including the desserts which are all handmade right there at the restaurant, as is everything they serve. I talked to the chef once and he has a sauce that takes him three days to make...It's awesome!

My girlfriend and I were very disappointed. We were seated right away, placed our order but didn't receive our tiny appetizer for 20 minutes. After that plate was cleared we waited another 30 minutes before somebody (not our waitress) came over to apologize that our salad still didnt come out. He said our ticket was stuck behind a table of 15. Finally after another 10 minutes, we got our ONE salad. After sitting there for another half hour with no acknowledgement by anyone we found our waitress and told her we just wanted to pay and leave. At the same time our food was coming out so she told them we didnt want it, they brought it back to the kitchen and gave us our check! We spent 1 hour and 40 minutes there and never even ate!

Wonderful place. I highly recommend the Blacksmith. The food is fabulous and the atmosphere is very relaxing. My husband and I recently moved to Bend and the Blacksmith was one of the first restaurants we visited. Bend has many great restaurants, but the Blacksmith remains one of our favorites.

We went based on a recommendation of a friend. Everything was great-appetizers, main, desserts and wines by glass. Not one thing could have been better. Server was very friendly, helpful and not intrusive. Wine list is exceptionally well-crafted. Cute decor. One of the best restaurants in Oregon, in our opinion, and we eat out a lot. Not to be missed when in Bend.
