Always a good chowder and seafood combo, which is the main reason to go there. Staff could be a little more attentive. Good Saturday spot for food and sporting event updates on the TV's.

Pros: Great for Lunch

Cons: Service

It's a hole in the wall, but the specialty chowder was fantastic. I need the HUGE bowl and the garlic bread next visit. The Larger shrimp salad, IS! The burgers look great. Our waitress was great, but I went to the bar to get another spoon and then some wine and was totally stunned at the treatment by one of them. FRESH. good food, just ignore the wait staff. Tatt next door while u wait. Clams by the bucket. Thanks Phil, for the treat!

Not the Pals I remember. Used to eat there a lot in the 70s and 80s but how times have changed. Drove 12 miles after thinking how nice it would be to have some great seafood at Pals Shanty . The food is over priced and bland, $14.00 for the crab and cheese sandwich that had little crab no dressing and was dry. Waitresses went out of there way to be rude. I will never return!!!!!

You would never know it. Pal's Shanty has some yummy seafood. We stop in here for lunch sometimes and they always have something good on the menu. The place looks like a hole in the wall but give it a whirl!

I've eaten here for years but on the last visit it was clear that the food and quality was slipping. Ordered the seafood caeser salad and was very disappointed. The dressing was this thick stuff right out of the bottle and on the side. It was a travesty - a caeser salad is not supposed to be made like this.

We had the sauteed oysters as an appetizer and they were these small, pitiful little things swimming in far too much garlic.

At first glance Pal's Shanty doesn't look like much on the outside. It's an older, rustic looking restaurant. Inside it looks like it would be right at home in one of the smaller towns of central or eastern Oregon. Comfortable, family friendly atmosphere. They specialize in seafood at reasonable prices. The ahi sandwich comes with a thick hunk of tuna cooked to your preference and enough wasabi to make your eyes water. Haven't been there for dinner, but makes a great casual place for lunch.

I've lived in the neighborhood a few years and kept hearing about Pal's Shanty. I'm not curious anymore. We went on a Friday and it seeemd like a typical tavern in a vacation town. Kind of divey, but that's ok. The restaurant was so smoky (it is non smoking but there does not seem to be any ventilation in kitchen) that my eyes were watering and burning. My clothes stunk like I'd worked a shift at Burger King.

I had the $18 crab cake dinner. It was edible and seemed to have a lump of real dungeness crab on the top. The portion was big, with a twice baked potato and salad with bay shrimp. There were 3 crab cakes. I only had one bite with crab shell in it.

People around us were ordering buckets of steamers and seemed pretty happy about it. A guy next to us was flossing at the table while his wife was still finishing dinner. 90% of customers were elderly and/ or obese.

Our waitress admitted she was kind of out of it. She proved it when she brought ketchup for my husband's burger right before we asked for the check.

I'm disappointed. I like dive bars and I thought even if the food was bad it might be a fun place to drink. I like supporting local non-chain restaurants. I really wanted to like Pal's Shanty, but it's expensive and they need a ventilation system (and they just remodeled!).

Pros: not a chain, has neighborhood history

Cons: very smoky from the kitchen, creepy atmosphere

From the moment we walked in and sat down, our waitress was extremely rude. No smile, no hello, not even a hint of a friendly tone. At my family's request I stayed for dinner. Unfortunately, her negative attitude and behavior did not improve during the meal, it, in fact, worsened. The overpriced but okay seafood dinner did not even come close to making up for the poor treatment my whole family received. I would not even recommend this "restaurant" to my enemies.

Absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in Portland. Great spot for out-of-town visitors looking for a great NW experience . . . friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and terrific seafood. The smoked seafood chowder is some of the best I've had. Don't get me started on the Crab Louis!

I ate at Pal's Shanty for the first time last weekend, and they had the best oyster shooters that I have had on the West Coast. I would also highly recommend the seafood and clam chowder, the crab louie's, and the buckets of steamed clams. Prices range from $7-$17 for entrees and fresh fish is based on market price. It is a tavern, so the atmosphere is laid-back and noisy, but not in an overbearing way. Two thumbs up.

We fly into Portland just for the seafood at Pal's. It's a relaxed tavern atmosphere where you can get the best seafood without a dress code. I can't believe people think Red Lobster with their high priced breaded seafood even competes with fresh seafood like what you get at Pal's or even Saltys. Super clams even in the off season. A bite of crab in every bite of the Crab Louis, big chunks of crab. The Northwest's best kept secret.

Pros: Great value, personal food service

Good seafood chowder for $3. I've read some rave reviews regarding portions, but six tiny catfish bites for $6.50 was a ripoff. Can't wait to try other specialties. Service was friendly.

I ordered the Crab Louie salad, which was a fresh, crispy bed of iceberg lettuce topped with beet slices, pickles, hard-cooked egg, tomato, and what seemed like HALF A POUND OF CRAB. At least six whole, peeled crab claws were scattered around in this too. The tomato was perfectly ripe and fruity. Served with a container of 1000-island dressing. This was a classic done to perfection, plus I had what seemed like another entire salad for lunch the next day. (This dish was $17.95 on 7/10/02.) Friends had the calamari steak (breaded/fried) and the dinner salad w/Pacific Bay shrimp (the little kind), which were both also very good.
