in response to alma j.'s comment, it is unethical to keep goldfish in a bowl. they do require a small tank with a filtration system to stay alive for more than a few days. when i brought home some goldfish from school, i too mistakenly believed that it was ok to keep them in a bowl, but once i did some online research, it quickly became clear that goldfish need the same kind of care that other freshwater or tropical pet fish do. rather than being a "young punk," the guy who tried to sell you a tank is actually a knowledgeable salesperson. he wasn't trying to rip you off, he was trying to keep the goldfish alive. i think it's worth the money to buy a proper home for the goldfish, if not for their wellfare, but because when your grandchild discovers that the goldfish has died, the child will be heartbroken. instead of calling petco to complain about the manager, maybe someone ought to call sesame street and let them know that they're perpetuating viewer's mistaken belief that it's ok to keep goldfish in a bowl rather than a tank! i too loved sesame street when i was younger, and learned a lot from the show, but they should have a segment on proper fish and pet care some day. yes, you do have a right to buy whatever you want, but calling petco to complain isn't going to do much--rather than "taking care of it" you demonstrated to petco that they need to make sure customers understand that goldfish need a proper home. it's heartening to know that even a huge corporation like petco is, at least in this situation, willing to place ethics over monetary gain.

alma j, your comment speaks to the desperate need for better education for pet owners. caring for any pet, even if it's a small and seemingly insignificant as a goldfish, requires a serious investment of time, money, and a willingness to learn how to keep that pet healthy and happy.

even though i'm not a fan of big-box stores, i've consistently had positive experiences at petco. i appreciate their reasonable prices and knowledgeable salespeople. i also appreciate their commitment not to buy pets from inhumane breeders, in contrast to the many pet stores, especially those found at the mall. thank you petco!

I implore all people that use these corporate services to check out the news first. All you have to do is type in dog passes while being groomed, law suits injuries. Look up the B B B complaints. I find it funny how so many of these tragedies are regulated by Petco and Petsmart when all you have to do is look up the facts. Not the reviews. There are companies paid to put ip positive reviews and they spend all their time trying to get rid of the real ones. There are also rumors that they go on line making up fake negative reviews for the small groom shops.

To alma - it sounds like you heard an answer you didn't want to hear. Goldfish produce a lot of ammonia and bowls are bad for them - maybe you should learn to use google. Would a girl manager have been better? Wouldn't have changed the answer, and if I were buying a goldfish I'd want them to tell me how to take care of the thing PROPERLY. Sounds like they were trying to, but as you said it's a free country and if you want to be an uneducated idiot abusing your goldfish you're unfortunately free to do so.

I've always found Petsmart to be decent. Not always great, but better than other places I've been.

I took my 1 yr cock-a-poo in for grooming early on a Sunday morning. When I booked appointment they stated need proof of current vaccines. I couldn't find my rabies certificate but brought my Washington County license information with me(which can not obtain w/o rabies vaccine) They stated that was not proof. They wouldn't even allow me to leave dog and wait 30 for my vet to open so they could fax certificate. What a waste of time. Petsmart should be more concern with dog in their store having proof of current vaccines. Several time I have felt uncomfortable with dogs in their store due to fact they were growling at my children. They should spend their time check dogs at the door for current vaccines. Our children and pets are at risk.

My husband and I took our 2 years old grand daughter to buy her a tiny gold fish at pets mart in Hillsboro on 25Th st. she loves Elmo and elmo has a goldfish named Dorothy in a small bowl the young boy called manager did not sell one to us because they grow too big and we needed to buy a 10 gallon fish tank ( that is not what elmo has) or a ugly black fish and expensive too! this young man wanted to make a sale trying to make us buy something we didn't wanted so I asked to talk to the manager ( not knowing he was the "manager" so I told my husband let's go to petco and what a difference we got what we wanted.I felt bad for my grand daughter, but this boy manager has a manager and I will take care of things so it don't happen to someone else, this is a free country and people buy whatever the hell they want not what they want you to buy he must not be very educated and doesn't know that, Please get experience managers not little punks!

When Banfields first started their dog daycare they handed out fliers and in them it said no "bully breeds allowed aka pit bulls" and wolfhounds were not allowed either. I understand pits have bad raps but at least judge it on a dog by dog basis.

Petsmart is an example of what a pet store should be. They offer a wide variety of products and you can always find what your looking for. The employees seem to actually enjoy working there and helping you out. Petsmart also has a grooming center which I have taken my dog to. They are reasonably priced and friendly people!

PROS: Friendly Staff, Reasonable Prices

I prefer the privately owned pet stores, but I found Petsmart to be very helpful and reasonably priced. If you're looking for something more exotic or rare, call first.

This pet store has it all and is definitely one-stop shopping from pet food to toys to grooming - - everything for the pet lover. There is even a veterinary clinic inside the store. I have great luck using their grooming facilities with my dog and they have always done a great job. Within walking distance is a Baja Fresh restaurant with outdoor sitting so your pooch can enjoy lunch with you.

PROS: Large store with very large inventory and good prices
CONS:
