Portland's first Mexican Restaurant. My family and I have been loving the food at The Original Taco House since 1962.
I love the "Big Green" Burrito and all their enchilada's. The service is excellent and always friendly. I highly recommend the food, service and atmosphere.

Don't you just love it when you go to eat, whether you are in a hurry for lunch or want to settle down for dinner, and you are treated like you matter. Your water and chips and salsa come quickly, and darn it if they aren't good, over and over again! Warm chips, fresh salsa - and an attentive staff. They know your dollar is hard earned and they try hard to earn it from the moment you sit down. The lunch specials are a great bargain, a good variety, fast and tatsy. The enchilada's for dinner are great. The bar does a nice job if you care to partake. I love this place - they care - and for what they do they provide good food at a fair price.

This place was at one time ( many years ago ) one of the better mexican food places to go to. Now I could only recommend it to ones short on time (unless a large group gets there before you). the food is at best bland and the prices (for what you get) are ridiculous. But I will say I like the fire place, and servers are usually friendly.

Pros: fast

Cons: too fast

The guacamole advertised as only avocados, salsa fresca and secret spices contained mayo or sour cream- blecch.
My burrito was bland.and left me with gas. My girlfriend's enchilada was dry. ($10 for 1 enchilada?)The refritos could have been used for spackle. The rice was passable. Hey, the coupon saved us a few $ but I'd have rather enjoyed the food. OH, service was good.

Mediocre at best. Good place to go if you like bland, disappointing food. Even the icecream was disappointing.

I love coming here for a plate of el picador nachos and a few beers. The restaurant itself isn't anything special, but the service and food is always excellent.

We just stopped by OTH for lunch for the first time and i feel like I just wasted $27.00. I looked at some of the previous posts and was baffled at how anyone can think that the food is anything but terrible. I'm assuming they have personal ties to the restaurant? I am always on the look out for good Mexican food and this was a huge disappointment. The salsa tastes like ketchup... The tamale was bland and hard... the beans were unlike any refried beans I have ever had-in a bad way... And the rice was stale and old. The waitress was nice enough to us but i noticed that when she got the order wrong for hte table next to us instead of saying sorry she said,"No you said taco not tostada sir."... Nice... Really this may be a long standing establishment but it is not high on taste or customer service. Go elsewhere.

Regretfully, decided on the OTH tonight instead of Red Robin. We were looking for something fast, cheap, and easy, and considering that Mexican food is fairly difficult to eff-up, I thought OTH would be a good place to try. WRONG. Like some of the other reviews, the food was bland, the beans were obviously canned, the rice was sticky like it had been smothered in ketchup and left out all day under a heat lamp. I ordered the fajitas and my husband ordered something that resembled cat food. The fajitas were bland, the chicken was fatty, the tortillas were completely stuck together and tore when I tried to separate them, but I still managed to eat one, which resulted in me feeling sick. The manager did take the food away and credited me half of my meal, but informed me that he had never heard any complaints and he's been serving that same dish for years (very condescending). I will not eat here again and wished I had checked the reviews before trying it.

The menu is also pathetic for such a large restaurant; very few choices for Mexican food and completely overpriced.

Look beyond the mere pettiness of these reviews listed here for THE ORIGINAL TACO HOUSE in Portland Oregon. You are right about one thing, this food is not authentic mexican food from Mexico but the most original, large portioned, tastiest recipies I believe the whole family will enjoy. If you are picky about service get take out. I have been eating at the Original Taco House in Portland Oregon since my Mother worked there in the 70's & I even worked there while in High School myself & my Brother Bob even worked there as a manager for many years. And I can tell you first hand all of the ingredients are made fresh daily on the premises & at the small factory next door. The enchiladas are out of this world. The beef enchilada is made with freshly roasted shredded beef. And the enchilada sauce is so amazing. They pour a lot of it over the enchiladas add a lot of cheese on top with some crispy flats to eat with it (get extra flats to slather your enchilada over them to eat). Get the Nachos, a lot of cheese, their flavorful seasoned meat & the most delicious salad dressing on this planet goes on top. The taco salads are just as great. Talk about a taco! Here, you get tons of meat & cheese on the tacos. For vegetarians that eat cheese, I recommend the Cheese/onion enchiladas & house salad dressing for the salad with the chips & salsa that are also freshly made & to die for!! For dessert they have home made bunuelos (crispy cinnamon/sugar) they put on the peppermint Ice Cream. Live/ E. Coast now & if there was a chain of those restaurants here, I would eat there a couple of times a week. Don't take the negative reviews to heart, try this food for yourself. There! Now you have MY Personal favorite dishes listed above to try for yourself. Heck, if I was local, I would not hesitate to get the items listed above catered to your next event. For now I just have to order the enchilada & sauce, salad dressing, salsa & chips by mailorder only!! Ask for Nate!

Pros: It's a cute place, and homey. The cocktail lounge has great drink prices & love the food.

Cons: Good and reliable help is hard to find, just ask for your favorite server when you go.

A friend from Cleveland High School introduced me to this Mexican Restaurant when we were freshmen at Lewis and Clark College. It became a favorite destination for my dorm mates when we could manage to borrow a car to drive across the river. The food was and still is good and reasonably priced.

I have been going to the Original taco House for years, and I always get over the top service and good for for a fair price. The enchiladas are always very fresh, saucy, and cheesy - just how I like 'em. Also check out happy hour for their killer margaritas and free-flowing chips and salsa. Last but not least - the cantina at the Powell location is cozy and PERFECT for cold days or really hot ones too.

my parents raised me at this restaurant and now i am raising my kids there! we live in Vancouver and make frequent trips a month to our favorite place. the guacamole is THE BEST!!! you cannot find any other like it. (unless you like the junks, like all the original guacs. have) you will love this one. i don't like that the prices are going up and that they charge you for an extra plate. (redicilious!) BUT we love the food and are always satisfied with them, (most of the time!!) We do have a favorite waitress!!!

I'm not going to say the food was bad. It was okay - although not great at all. The customer service, however, was abysmal. When we arrived, one of the benches of our booth was dirty and we had to clean it off ourselves. After that things went alright until our drinks started running low. I waited 5-10 minutes for a refill on my drink - or even for a waiter to walk by so I could ask for one. And even then I had to flag down a different waitress and request it - or more accurately, interject my request into the conversation she was still carrying on with another customer several booths away. Waiting this long might be mildly excusable if the restaurant were packed and the staff overwhelmed with customers, but we were one of only 3 or 4 parties in the restaurant at the time including our own.
The same waiting routine happened again after we finished our meals and had already informed our waitress that no, we did not want to try a dessert. At this point most restaurants would promptly bring you your check and allow you to continue your evening elsewhere, but instead we waited again for another 5 or 10 minutes to get our check.

I had remembered this being a nice place to get good Mexican food, but my opinion has now changed drastically. The food was bland, staff incompetent, and price was not in line with the small serving sizes. I will not visit this restaurant again, and I would encourage you to avoid it as well.

I can't believe the reviews here. Yes, it isn't authentic Mexican, but how can you NOT resist the guacamole. It is THE best guacamole in Portland. As for decor, so what!!! This place is an institution in Portland. My daughter was raised on this food. It was a meeting place for me an various friends that I met throughout the years--that I was surprised to find out had the same interest as I in their food.

In the 34+ years that I have been enjoying this restaurant, I have had a couple of upset stomachs...but only because my system was not up to par, not because of the food!!! For those of you that experienced a reaction to the food and have been going for many years, I can't believe you'd give up on this place.

And obviously the staff must be happy. The 82nd Street location had staff that worked from the time I started eating there in 1974, up until the mid 90's. And today, I see staff that have been around since the 1990's ...most probably the successors to those that retired in the 90's.

I will always be a loyal fan of this institution. I have too many memories and too many acquaintances that share the same passion for this place. If only they would release the recipe for their guacamole.

It's interesting reading the reviews to see how most if not all long-time patrons rave about OTH, and some newbies can't handle it. This is not Tex-Mex or authentic Mexican food, but the first Mexican style food in Portland, 1960's style. My parents loved it, my sisters and I love it, my daughter loves it, and my grand-nieces and nephews love it. You just have to get used to the heavy chili powder enchilada sauce that stays with you for a day or so, and then you get hooked. I like the beef tacos because they have a lot of crisp lettuce and cheese in addition to the beef in a large shell (but not all-beef like some seem to want). If your taste leans toward traditional Mexican food or Tex-Mex, you might not like it, but if you like some variety in your food choices, go there! I like a lot of different styles of South-of-the-Border foods, but the Original Taco House will always have a special place in my heart (can't eat the OTH enchilada sauce every day, though). About 80% of my daughter's friends that she takes there like it if that helps you decide to give it a shot.

My husband and I were in the area and looking for a dinner spot. We saw the OTH. Having driven by this place many times over the years I had always been curious. Since the parking lot was full we thought it must be great place. Think again. The salsa was flat and tasted like canned tomato sauce. The refried beans tasted processed like they were from a can and reheated. The rice was sticky an horrible. The steak in the tacos did not taste fresh. This was a very disappointing experience and to top it off the waiter charged our card for someone elses meal.

I cannot believe the things I'm reading here about The Taco House. In 40+ years, I have never had a negative experience at Portland's oldest and best Mexican food restaurant and I have never talked to anyone who has. I have certainly never been made ill by the food. The last time I ate there was less than 1 week ago.

Over the years, I have ordered everything on the menu at least once and have not found anything that was not good quality for the price. The food served may not meet the high standards of food snobs, but is tasty, well made and affordable.

My wife and I typically share a Deluxe El Picador, a large nacho with either chicken or beef and covered with cheese, refried beans, olives, guacamole, sour cream, onions and cilantro.

Bottom line: Good food at a reasonable price and a great place to meet friends and family.

my grandmother loves to take me here and has for over 20 years. I love their chicken taco salad but she loves their jalapeno poppers. Salsa is okay but the chips are warm with just the right amount of salt sprinkled. Inside decor hasn't changed in all these years but it's suitable for the place. There is also a fireplace which adds to the ambiance. Lounge too.

my bf and i both threw up and were hideously gastro for 24 hours after we ate our $50. dinner.
our pitcher of margueritas had two drinks in it - with no apologies.
our food smelled bad and tasted worse.
this used to be a great place.
i can't imagine why you'd want to go there, unless you're looking for a case of disentary.

Pros: rugs and waitresses didn't smell as bad as the 82nd street location

Imagine, say, someone from Outer Mongolia finding a beat-up Mexican cookbook with all the recipes torn out. He might look at the pictures and try to make that food. He might not know what the guac is made of, what filling the tacos might have, etc.

Tonight I had a tamale that might as well have been filled with camel meat, and my wife's tostada may just have had muskrat. Maybe that sounds harsh, but considering my meal tonight, I feel it's pretty apt.

We had a tostada, a pork tamale and a shredded beef enchilada. We ordered a side of guac and chips came with the meal. The chips were decent, but the salsa was canned. Everything else was so soupy that there was essentially no flavor or texture difference between the tostada and the enchilada. The rice and beans were covered with so much red sauce that I'm not kidding, I had to use a spoon.

The meal we had taught us the important lesson that low quality ingredients and incompetent recipes prepared badly result in, not surprisingly, terrible food. While we were trying to force down some of our meal, I told my wife that the Mexican cooks can't be blamed, because they prepare things as they're told. Still, it is startling how bad the OTH must be if not even a touch of quality rubs off on their food by virtue of osmosis from the Mexican cooks.

Some of you may say that I have a bias towards authentic Mex. That is not the case. I know Cal-Mex (which OTH is supposed to be) as I was born there and have a place in LA. This ain't no Cal-Mex. I often frequent an Ameri-Mex joint that is stunning ,and to call OTH americanized Mexican food is a little like calling a dead cow a stallion.

The prices are also unreasonable for food of this type. Most of the ingredients were obviously canned, and for canned beans I can go to Food4Less.

Instead of spending $25 at the OTH tonight, I should have eaten a fistful of stale bread and paid a guy to slug me in the stomach, I'd be better off. Nausea, and a smaller wallet.

Good place to eat quantity not quality. Very good price range. But we need to get some cooks here who know Mexican food or Tex-Mex. The location is good for driving, right off of SE Powell. Coming from Texas and enjoying lots of Mexican Food, and can definitely say, "This was not Tex-Mex." The server was friendly, and new the menu inside and out. I was impressed with that. Additionally, the server explained how to get what I wanted from the menu since the selections were pretty much limited to Burritos and Tacos. You can get other things like enchiladas, tamales, chalupas (they called them something else), but it is on the combination menu and it'll cost you. Margaritas had very little tequila. :(

We were in for a midweek late dinner, so the restaurant was not busy, yet the waiter was inattentive: we never got the hotter salsa we asked for; he never checked with us as to if our food was satisfactory and never even returned in a reasonable amount of time to process payment for our bill. Then when we went to the front register to pay, a girl who couldn't understand English took our bill back to the waiter for him to process, as they both stood there looking at us and laughing. I had tried to tell the girl more than once that we were not happy customers, but she didn't understand.
Whereas rice and beans are customary at most mexican restaurants, this one charges extra for such items: I was surprised to see the extra charge on our bill. Beware - read the menu carefully!
The fajita burrito my husband ordered had pieces of beef too big to comfortably eat without being cut, yet no knife was provided.
The food gave both of us gas: my stomach was upset and we both had to take Pepto-Bismol to quell the problem.
Many years ago when living on the east side of the city, I frequented these restaurants and was always happy with the food and service. We frequently eat Mexican food, as my husband is from Central America, and I thought that perhaps he would enjoy the Original Taco House.
This was a rare occasion for us to be on the east side, as we have lived on the west side for a long time now, but plan to never again return to this particular restaurant.

Pros: Location for those who live in the area: not many other Mexican food restaurants around.

Cons: Food, prices and service.

The entrees were bland and the rice was possibly the worst I've had at a Mexican restaurant. We were also charged for food we did not order and we had to ask the waitress, hostess, and finally the manager before someone knew how to remove it from the bill.

TOTH is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Portland. My favorite item is the little green chili chicken burrito. The entire menu is delicious, well prepared and never greasy. The service is terrific & fast as you need it to be. The margaritas are lovely, not too sweet or too sour. The chips and salsa are both top notch. In the 16 years I've eaten at both locations, I've never had a disappointing meal.

Stopping in to place a "to go" lunch order I was really hungry and thought this would be better then going through the nearby drive-thrus. I was wrong. I should have gone to Burgerville up the street. I ordered a taco and tamale. The taco was filled with so much lettuce I could find, nor taste, the beef. It was a beef taco afterall. The tamale was smoothered with so much red sauce, again, I couldn't taste the tamale. The side of rice was also smoothered with so much red sauce, which tasted like tomato paste out of the can, with salt. The pinto beans were watery and salty. With all the great places to dine in Portland, I felt this was truly the 'original' taco house -- their recipe hadn't changed since. That's too bad to. The restaurant seemed like a nice place to eat, with ambiance one could expect for a Mexican place. Good sized seating in the dining area, etc.

While this is not 'authentic' mexican food, it is still one of my favorites. Just about everyone who has grown up in the Portland/Gresham area, has dined at OTH. I have been going to OTH for about 22 years now and still crave the Meat and Cheese Salad, Mexi Bowl (all rice for me) and the Guac. This is a great place to meet up with a friend for lunch or late night dinner that won't hurt your budget.

$8.50 for a chicken burrito. No rice, no beans, not even a garnish of lettuce and tomatoes.
Salsa is the blandest I've ever tasted. I make better salsa myself, at home. What's worse, when I called and asked if I could get the mexi bowl with chicken added, the girl on the phone said, "I don't know." "I really don't know." She never bothered to ask someone else. I should have hung up at that point. It was a sign. Nacho Mama's down the street is better.

I'll keep this sweet and short. Basically we are sitting there eating. I ordered another pitcher of margaritas. So 15-20 mins. go by. Other people are being seated and drinks brought to them. We were ignored until I finally had to get up and say we did not want the pitcher and we wanted the check. Next thing you know this guy brings out the pitcher and is automatically on the defensive. I tell him what has happened and he tells me we can't order something and then change our minds. In addition he points his finger at me and says that I'm going to pay for it. Need less to say we did not pay for it. There food is alright but not that good to put up with that kind of rudeness.

OTH changed use to have you place your order at the counter and then be seated. Now they come to your table with menus and wait on you. The service is so much better! The food is just as great!

Pros: better service , good prices, good place 4 kids

Although the food at the OTH is great, and you DO get chips and salsa, the service is normally lacking. You get free refills on a drink, but many times you have to nearly get the refill yourself. I still reccomend it though.

I've been going to the Taco House for probably about 22 years (since I was 6!) Maybe it's not authentic but I love it! The meat & cheese salad is my favorite - when I lived in Denver I even had my mom send me bottles of their salad dressing (and got my college buds hooked on it too!) Just great food at a great price.

I have been going to OTH for over 10 yrs. Have never had a bad meal yet. Last night went there for their first night of trying resturant style as aposed to the "fast food style" I thought how nice they are doing something different. Not...that part was aweful, we didn't realize this was the first night for transition it took an hour for our food, yet still good. When came time to get bill the waitress couldn't find our bill, so the manager came over and said, " it took a bit for the food" we said yes it certainly did so on so forth talking to him he wrote the entire bill off and gave us a gift certificate for next visit of $30 Taco house still rocks....and would still recommend it to everyone even when things are rocky they make it up to you!!!!!!

I've been going to the Taco House ever since I was a little girl. Now that I moved to go to college I miss the food and I make sure to visit the Taco House on my trips home. The chips and salsa are by far the best that I have ever had. My personal favorite dish is the El Picador.

Basically, this restaurant serves fast food quality meals at mid-range restuarant prices. I wouldn't recommend this place even for those mex-american fast food guilty pleasures. Why spend around 8 bucks for a 3 dollar burrito at a drive through? The ambiance was also a minus. The restaurant is outdated and dirty. The one thing I will give it is good service. Go if it's too late to sit down and eat anywhere else.
