Many of us promise we will NEVER put our loved one in a nursing facility/retirement home, etc. But what are you going to do when your family member's medical condition becomes too much for you to handle on your own?

I could quit my job and become the full-time care-giver, but that will cost me my full salary, my own independence, plus I may end up resenting my loved one. I could go on...

So you've made up your mind that it needs to be done, now which facility do you choose? My grandmother is in Marquis at Oregon City. This is the third or fourth place she's been in. You don't want to learn everything the hard way; learn from our experience and choose a Marquis facility.

Marquis facilities are clean, which is important to me. Oregon City has a nice garden. They also have a special Alzheimer's unit. They have done some remodeling recently and got new furniture.

The staff are well-educated, well-paid and care about the residents. I have had only good experience with the staff. Sometimes I see them there on their days off. They are there to bring their pets to share with the residents (they love that.)

For those residents who still have plenty of cognitive abilities, there are lots of social activities. Right now, I think they are doing some kind of Rose Festival Princess thing between the facilities. It's very sweet.

There are a variety of specialists, as well. Many Marquis facilities, like the one in Oregon City, even have a massage therapist who comes in a few times a month.

Marquis is more expensive than some other facilities, but they take Medicare and Medicaid.
