Haters may be hating, but this place has solid Thai. It's not fancy or anything but it's solid. The prices are right, the servers friendly, and the happy hour one of my favorites.

I recently got married and my husband begged me to let us have Sweet Basil cater the reception. Knowing how excellent the food is at the restaurant, I didn't hesitate in saying "YES!" Needless to say, Boos and his catering crew FAR exceeded our expectations. They were prompt, helpful, and went above and beyond to take stress off the rest of us in a DIY party setting. The "Oh My God" appetizers live up to their name, and the Pa Nang curry is one of my faves. The food was so delicious that even those who had never tasted Thai food before (i.e. older relatives) said they'd love to go to the restaurant now to try other dishes. If I could give more stars, I would!

I have not gone there for dinner, but for lunch I know it's fantastic. Really fine food, fair prices, and you can sit out in the back garden in the summer.

Small little restaurant with great food. The staff tends to be a little slow with service, but it is a pleasant restaurant if you are not in a hurry. The food selection and level of spice is fabulous!

I have been going here for a number of years. The customer service is always the best and the atmosphere is very relaxing. In the summer, the back porch is open and is covered with grape vines. The menu is always great and the chef often has delicious surprise recipes. I highly recommend this delightful restaurant.

The patio is a wonderful place to have summer meal. It is canopied with a grapevines and you hardly know that you're on Broadway. The food has been consistently good and it is relatively inexpensive to eat there. The service is hit or miss - sometimes very slow, sometimes acceptable.

Ok, so i went at lunch time on a wednesday, and not a lot of people, but food took forever, people where getting their food before we did, and we were there first, so, if you are in a hurry, and only have 1 hour for lunch, dont go there.

On Aug 21st, I had the worst dining experience of my life at Sweet Basil. After we were seated we did not see a server again for 20 minutes. Several other parties came in a sat down. I finally asked a server if we could place our order. We watched all the tables around us receive their food. I kindly asked one of the two wait staff if they were short staffed that evening. Her response was, "no, this is typical". When I stated we had been there an hour and had yet to receive our soup she told me "this is not a fast food restaurant".

Our soup finally came. We finished and waited another 15 minutes and I once again asked how much longer it would be as we may need to take our food to go at this point, our waiters response was, "yeah, sure" and walked away. We never saw him again. Well after 10 more minutes of waiting for him to come back, we stood up to leave.

As we approached the door, the same woman yelled for everyone in the restaurant to hear, "you can't leave you haven't paid for your soup". We had been at the restaurant for
1 1/2 hours with no drinks, one soup, no serving spoon and no spoon to feed the baby after I asked three times! I started to tell her that we haven't had proper service and we could no longer wait for our food or bill. She told me to leave and we were not welcome back in the restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant looked and each table around us knew the lack of service we were all receiving. One gentleman said, "yeah where is the service tonight". I asked to talk with the owner and he refused to come out and talk with me.

I run a business in Portland and am hosting a large open house expecting 100 guests in three weeks. I will making sure everyone knows about the lack of service and how my family was treated at Sweet Basil on Broadway. I have told five people today. I wonder if the owner cares.

I hosted my husband's birthday party at Sweet Basil recently. There was a group of 12 of us plus one toddler. We started out the evening on the patio which was wonderful, a great outdoor dining location. It started to rain though and they moved us inside very quickly. The food was awesome (we love the crab wontons!) , the service was great and we really appreciated how hard they tried to make this a great night for my husband's birthday. They helped me get his cake ready and even dimmed the lights when the candles were lit. We were a loud , rambuncious crowd and they took it all in stride. Thanks! We highly recommend this location for a special occasion.

The food here is good. The food is fresh, and made with quality ingredients. If it were not for the terrible service I would go back. Last night my husband and I waited at a table for over ten minutes without any one so much as acknowledging us. The place was not even busy yet. No one asked if we wanted a drink, or appetizer. The server walked by us several times, and ignored me when I tried to flag him down. It is too bad, because I won't eat here again, I will also tell my friends to eat at some of the other Thai restaurants that have better service.

I live just a few blocks from Sweet Basil and eat here at least 2-3 times a month. Their service has always been prompt and friendly. Their pad ke mao (like pad thai with wide noodles) and tom ka (coconut soup) are fantastic. My only small complaint is their spicyness rating is not very consistent. Sometimes the "medium" is medium, and sometimes it is mild. This is an excellent choice for lunch or to go. Their outdoor patio is really nice too.

On Broadway, there are sooooo many other Thai restaurants that you would have to be searching for the worst food to have picked this one. OK. So that's harsh and extreme, which is going to be a total write off to anyone reading these, but here's the deal. It's true. Really. The food at the other places is so much better and combined with the prices of the Basil, there's really no reason to go to it. Unless you want to go to their bar and be extremely distracted by the 4'x5' projected sports TV in the front room, or in the black-lit make out room residing to the back. Ok. So there wasn't any make out back there; I'm just spewing here. Overall, if you're still reading this, you're much better off going to one of the other places if you're going for the food. Which I was. And now I'm disappointed. Oh so Disappointed. Big frowny face Disappointed.

This was some of the best and freshest tasting Thai food I have had in a while. No, the service was not perfect (a bit on the slow side) but everyone was friendly and helpful. The pace is relaxed so if perhaps time is a crucial factor it may be better to phone ahead to go. For us it was nice to spend some time over a good meal.
As far as portion size all I can say is that I did not leave hungry! The atmosphere is pleasant and next time we will take advantage of the patio seating. I will recommend this place to others and look forward to going back soon!

The Crab Rangoons and Pad Kee Mao are great. Service is iffy depending on staff and business. The owner will ocassionally make deliveries, himself, and is always pleasant. After some staff adjustments I'm sure they'll be back up to speed the way there were a few years ago. The patio is nice but avoid the bar downstairs. The bartender is not nice .

I have honestly never had a bad experience here, in fact, I just CAME from there and thought "I need to give them a shout out". My friends and I usually go to the Basil Bar downstairs so we can watch TV and chit chat...but the drinks are to die for, the bartender was above and BEYOND helpful, the specials during the week are great, but mainly.....the food is lovely. I love the flavors, I don't get the felling of "cheap filler" and the Oh My God appetizers ALONE are worth the trip. Great place. I had a very tasty beef salad that was PERFECT. I brought my friend who is vegetarian and she was pleased with all of her choices. I had some bites of hers and it was fresh, fresh, fresh tasting.

It looks so cute and had such nice reviews that I had to try it... once... I'm not sure what the appeal here is for other diners, but it can't be the bland food. Wasn't even worth a second try.

We recently sat inside for dinner here, after having moved back to Portland. What a disappointment. The service was appalling - it took 20 minutes just to get the wine we ordered - and the food was not good! In fact, we declined left-overs (which we never do at Thai). I really loved this place years ago - I hope it comes back around.

This was my favorite Thai place in NE and when I moved away from Portland I always looked forward to visiting SB when I came home for a visit. The last time I went I noticed little differences like the portions seemed smaller or a scare 3 or 4 shrimp in a whole dish. Confirmed by former regulars and coupled with all the dishes seemed to have increases $1 or so Sweet Basil has gone from a great spot to an average overpriced restaurant. Too bad.

Going to a Thai place, I expect my food to be flavorful. Sweet Basil was not...the pad see ew was quite bland and the pad thai was on the sour side. The only decent dish was the pineapple fried rice (a nice presentation inside a whole pineapple although a little overpriced, you are most likely paying for the pineapple itself). The outdoor dining area below the grape vines is beautiful, but the food is not worth it. The only flavor I found in this restaurant is in its name...not recommended unless you enjoy atmosphere over food.

While I mistakeningly ended up at Lemongrass instead of Sweet Basil, it did give me perspective. I've lived on Thai food from Thailand to Alaska, and learned to make it myself! I love Thai and Sweet Basil is the place to enjoy it in Portland. Great food, great ambiance, great value, and great attitude.

The food was all-around good, especially the portion size considering the price. However, the service was awful -- the waitress ignored us, it took us forever to order, to receive that order, and to order desert when the time came. The upper floor seemed dreadfully understaffed, which might have explained some of this. Unfortunately, this service tainted what was otherwise a very tasty meal -- the service was so slow getting our food to the table that it was barely lukewarm upon arrival. I tried two dishes - The Sweet Basil Stir Fry and the Phad Thai - both tasted excellent apart from that.

Sweet Basil is one of my favorite spots for Thai, whether I'm in the mood for an elaborate meal or just a quick curry fix. The extensive menu offers a wide variety of styles and prices, so I can take friends who are experienced diners as well as those who may be unfamiliar with Thai. The bar is also a real treat - fresh squeezed juice, bar infused liquors, and signature drinks galore. Service is always timely and polite. Try it out - it'll be your favorite Thai place!

Food is not too bad, but they do the "lots of cheap filler-ingredients, skimpy on the pricey/yummy bits" routine. In any case, even if it was 5-star food it wouldn't be worth putting up with the obnoxious service. Overall, a VERY unpleasant experience. I would never go back. Don't waste your money -- or time -- here.

I visited during lunch hour when it wasn't at busy. Overall my meal was good, however, there were enough mushrooms in each of my dishes to cover the forest floor.

They probably are most well known for their specialty dishes which doesn't include the Pad Thai--it was extremely oily. I did love the peanut sauce though!!! ... but i couldn't get the waitress to smile at me. After awhile it became my mission, and alas, I managed to squeak one little smile out of her. When dining alone, the attitude of the wait staff seems to matter more to me. Especially if I'm paying a little more for the food.

The Basil Bar has besome my new favorite bar!
They have the best appretizers in town for happy hour. The bar tenders are always very freindly and on top of service. The ambiance in the bar is very nice. Kind of dark with candles at every table, they are always playing great music and have a big screen tv playijng what ever you want. It's very cozy and warm. I would highly suggest going to the Basil Bar. Also Ladies check it out on Tuesday's, it's ladies night and you get a yummy free appetizer..
You can't go wrong!

The food and ambience always used to overcome the poor service, but now the food is as bad as the wait staff's attentiveness. When a plate arrived bland, lukewarm and with cold vegetables, a request to have the dish fixed was met with a blank stare and sullen removal. It was returned warmed it spots while the vegetables remained cold - as if they had stuck it in the microwave for less than a minute. There was no follow-up from the waiter on the quality of the returned dish. I would not recommend this restaurant - there are plenty of high-quality, inexpensive Thai restaurants in this city - avoid this one.

You've got to love a Sweet Basil's so confident you'll go bananas over a tempura roll stuffed with crab, fresh basil and cream cheese that it calls the thing"O MY GOD." You may find yourself uttering the same words after tasting. great flavors and beautifully presented. Inside seating is romantic and quiet; the covered deck is fabulous in the summer. Great, friendly service.

This restaurant is great during the summer because of their porch out back. However, the service is awful. Our waitress went bolting from our table to answer her cell phone and then came back talking on it! It's really too bad that their service is so awful because otherwise it is kind of a fun trendy place to go.

I went on a weekday with a girlfriend for lunch. It took 20 minutes and a loud "excuse me" to get our order taken and after waiting an additional 45 minutes for our food to come...my friend's meal was cold and the chicken in my Rama Salad was raw...completely pink and stretchy.
The service has always been pretty poor but their food usually makes up for it...this time their service was completely ridiculous and the food was raw...there's nothing more I can say other than I'll never go there again.

It is always consistent and delicious. The place is clean and one feels pampered and yet pays a very reeasonable price.

Pros: FOOd, authenticity

Cons: PARKING

I find the Sweet Basil charming. It is *not* a soup kitchen, and not hurried. Quick noon snacks may or may not be an option, depending on one's schedule. If a person has more than an hour to enjoy the meal, I recommend this place. The visual presentation is the best part of the meal. Try the trout, for one, as an example.

If you can stand "the heat", Sweet Basil will crank it up to any level without destroying the meal.

Note that Sweet Basil has a restaurant recently opened (same people) on Powell Street in Gresham's east side (near Hogan). Same food, same ambience, less crowded, therefore quieter

I just got back from the Sunday brunch and can't wait to go back there again next sunday. The food was so................................ good, especially the Sweet & Sour Halibut and the rest of the food was wonderful as usual.

Pros: Inexpensive

Cons: Crowded

Overpriced, small portions, crowded tables set-up, snail's pace service, and presentation that's too 'artistic' and trying to be something its not.

Been there a few times now. Love the outdoor seating. Always very good food. Almost always slow service.

After you your food comes very quick. No Problems in the kitchen. But if your there for lunch you might have to get up and find your waiter to place and order and they never seem to want you to give them money. They just kinda avoid eye contact. Too bad, the food and ambience are great!

For an outstanding Thai brunch, give Sweet Basil Thai on NE Broadway a try -- eat outside on their lovely deck covered by an arbor that's loaded with grapes. (9 for ambience on their covered deck, but not sure how the ambience will be during the winter months when the deck seating is not available.)

As the night turns so does their service. Their menu says they are open till 10 p.m., but if you show up at 9:30 p.m. they will show you the door. I guess they are in to big of a hurry to drive off in the Mercedes marked with the "basil" license plate.

If you want to go, go early when they can focus on quality -- seems that they can't keep it up when their is a crowd. Often the food is served cold or with awkward timing.

Wow, it has so much selection of Thai food. Many unique flavors and dishes. I recommend the Rad Na dish for those not looking for a spicy dish and the Spicy Sweet Basil and get it "wild" for an awesome spicy kick! Lunch or dinner, it's a great place for Thai food and great atmosphere too!

We passed by Sweet Basil and had dinner there before we read anything about it - the atmosphere was quite good. Yet service was VERY slow. Phat Thai was OK - a bit more sour than other places. Yet their Penang Seafood is a NO NO!!! The salmon was rough and dry: not fresh - and the crap was bad and got a pretty disgusting smell: even the curry couldn't cover it... After we read the Citysearch posting there, we were even more disappointed to see its high rating.

Great food and atmosphere. The cost was a little high compared to India Oven which is also very good but not as expensive. But, I have gone a few times. Love the Food.

I've been here for lunch several times and had good meals. The curries can be a bit heavy on the oil, but overall dishes here are flavorful and fresh. They really pay attention to presentation, too, which is nice. I like the black rice. The house it's in is a cute craftsman bungalo with a very nice patio out back. I need go back and try it for dinner.
