In Short
Tables hang upside down from the ceiling; knickknacks, board games and video games keep customers busy while they wait. Here, diners get in line to order, grab a booth and pick up their own pizza and utensils. There are more than 30 different toppings, including oysters and soy cheese, plus two different doughs and four styles of crust. The tender-crust calzone is also very good. The small but well-stocked salad bar is an added bonus.

The Inside Scoop

  1. The Extras - If you're not up for a whole pizza, you can get custom slices from 11am to 4pm.
  2. Know Before You Go - The restaurant can hold up to 75 people. Just give them a heads up before you show up.

Fabulous!

by michelle r.

We love this place, the pizza is delicious and the atmosphere is relaxing and family friendly. We have many end of the season sports parties here. Their Miss Piggy pizza is amazing, one piece is a meal in itself. Our kids enjoy watching the talented pizza tossers do their magic too.

Green olives, mmmm

by hazel b. | insider Insider | Rank: 13,704

This is the closest to killer east coast (NY/MA) pizza I've found out here. Absolutely fabulously deadly. They offer green olives for toppings, and that alone makes me love them, plus beer, wine, and Scrabble.

Did I mention that the pizza is fabulous and the whole wheat crust option is super tasty as well?

Some of the best around

by Rika W. | insider_guru Insider Guru | Rank: 328

This is delicious pizza -- any crust style you want. We love the pan pizza. Ingredients are great quality. Small gaming area to keep the younger ones occupied but your wallet doesn't walk away empty. Beer available. We've had pizza end-of-season parties many times there.

Look out! Flying Pie!

by epicuriousgeorge

Flying Pie. I was a bit hesitant to try this place since they had so many locations around and thought it would be "not so original chain pizza"... but decided to try it since they're one of the few places that offer gluten-free crust. Dude. I ordered a gluten-free pie and I was pleasantly surprised. Piled high with toppings! I mean it. Every time i go there it's the same... BAM! Like there was a mushroom, olive, mozzarella avalanche in the kitchen! The cheese they use is top quality and boy do they cover that pizza with it. I believe they use Nu-grain gluten-free crusts which are used in a few other pizza parlors around town. A good tasting, thin crust that somehow magically holds the toppings they dump on there. Their house dough/crust is good too. A little thicker than I like... but it tastes very good. They also sell pizza by the slice 11-4. Go check em out. The Academy Theatre next door sells Flying Pie by the slice too.

Pros: good crust, gluten-free crust available, cheese, toppings

Cons: tacky tip jar at pick up counter

Damn Good Pizza

by breezyl

I am a frequent customer of all locations- pizza is always great! Whole milk mozzarella and hand tossed crust makes all the difference. The small cheese will feed 2 and its only $10! It's so good, I won't go anywhere else and when I'm craving pizza- they are the only to satisfy.

Pros: whole milk mozzarella cheese- the REAL stuff!

Cons: service is sometimes slow

yuck

by fred44444

The crust is awful at this place, they pre roll them and then the dough dries out or something, all in all its a really bad crust. I have never ever ever had anything but borderline rude service here, and it shows, the restaurant is really dirty and there doesn't seem to be much pride from the employees. The prices are way too high for the product. I would look past the service and prices and come here more often if the pizza was better.

Not worth the time or money

by qwick0ne

We used to order from this place 2-3 years ago. It was never spectacular, but it was good enough. I moved back into the neighborhood recently and called for a delivery. The guy I talked to was a class-A a**hole - the kind of situation where the customer can't win. You can be as nice as possible, but these jerks have an ax to grind and they'll get their knives in.

by eatnout4568

And let him / her know how bad of a job he / she is doing with this place. It has great potential, the location is great and who doesn't love pizza? I won t go in detail with how I was treated by the employees or how bad the food was... Let me just leave it to: This is one of the few places a man will remember their entire life and will deeply hate. If I ever see the owner of this place, I would RUN up to him and let them know what I think of his work. I hope this place SINKS and never open anywhere else. What a shack!

Making me sick

by brednbuttr

I agree with the other bad reviews. This place is dirty and the pizza tastes old and nasty. I recently walked across the street to order a pizza and have a beer while I waited because my friend just had a baby and was starving. As I had my first sip of beer I began watching and starting getting sick to my stomach. I witnessed 2 employees handling dirty dishes and then making salads. I left my beer and walked out without even remembering if I had paid. Well I didn't and it's a good thing. The only sad part is someone probably got my pizza and I'm sure it tasted bad because come to find out, the reason why half the time their pizza tastes old is because if they have screw ups they leave them in the oven and wait til someone else orders the same one.

Pizza Nightmare!!!!!

by samNsara

Just in shock at all of the 5 star rating this place gets. I was a fan of the one in_____, but the one here in Portland is worst place I have ever eaten in my entire life! I was over charged for the most disgusting slice of pizza I have ever seen- that took 35 min to prepare! The employees were rude, slow and really really dirty looking - and I have to mention very bad at math. The whole place was as filthy as it gets. I'm stunned that that this place stays in business, but even more shocked that it has not been shut down for it's dirty condition. ****Can't stress enough that this place is a stomach infections' best friend. Just don't go.

Dont take the Family

by sadccdan55

The pizza is consistently good. The staff are quick, the decor is unique. However, last night, I was disappointed when one of the staff sat down with his friend, and she began bellowing vulgarity as if it were a private residence. Seated next to them were a mom and her young son trying to enjoy a meal. After several trumpets of the f word and other unacceptable verbage, folks from surrounding tables got uncomfortable and left. I was disappointed the nearby staff seemed to shrug it off as nothing, and essentiallly condoned it. I felt uncomfortable for the mom. To be sure, I am not a moral model of any sort, but try using a little discretion with such language and keep it private, or at least quiet. If I were to begin such a dialogue in a public place, I'd expect to be asked to leave, period. Great food, but leave the family at home.

by jacknmac99

This pizza is simply boring. It kind of ruined a night. After working hard all week long it was time to go out for some good cheap eats... pizza, But this pizza was not pleasing at all. Texture was poor(very soggy). The toppings were not so fresh. The sauce was very unevenly spread. I can't believe this joint has any recognition in anyone's book.

dumbfounded

by DAN8789

Wow - I am absolutely dumbfounded as to how this pizza could have rated #2 in the readers choice vote. Is the competition really that scarce? Both my wife and I thought it was terrible.... and I mean really - how hard is it to make a decent pizza? You know they say pizza is like making love - even when it's bad it's good. Not in this case. The cheese was not fully melted, it was WAY to salty, the dough was over kneaded and thus tough and chewy, there was no unique flavor - I really cant come up with any redeeming qualities about this pie. Oh also there was a strange smell to the pizza that I can't put my finger on... but it wasn't pleasant. Avoid.

Disappointing

by hiworks

Another overrated pizza joint resting on its laurels. Whoever owns this place needs to come in and clean house, starting with the management. From the second we walked in the door the lines and poor service began. Half pizzas no problem the sign said, wrong. They screwed up our entire order and then acted as if it was our fault. Maybe we'll try another Flying Pie sometime, but I'm not in a hurry to do it.

With the insane amount of negative comments on this place I can't imagine how it can still show as 5 stars. The pizza is okay, the setting is okay, but the service is terrible. I won't subject my family to this place again.

Cons: Salty pizza, chewy dough, and stuck up artsy wannabe help

I absolutely can not recommend this place. As a lover of pizza I've tried them all and this was just average. The service on the other hand was utterly hopeless. Long wait to order a pizza that we had to get up and serve to ourselves anyway. Pizza just thrown together. No love for this joint.

Pros: The movie theatre next door

28 year-old minimum-wage pizza boys with attitude

by Bum2323

My wife and I met two friends we hadn't seen in months for dinner on a Tuesday night. We were catching up and having a nice time. Then the pizza boy called us up to the order window by whispering our name into the microphone. He told us he couldn't hear their phone ringing and we needed to keep it down. Seriously? This is a pizza joint where you serve yourselves, not a haute French five star. We got a good laugh at that, so they followed that up by making our pizza incorrect and then telling us we couldn't have another beer. Apparently two beers a night is the limit here. If we hadn't have had to pay for our meal up front at the do-it yourself counter we would have walked out. And if we hadn't been running late for a movie next door we would have told them to remake the pie. Anyway, mediocre pizzas, and ridiculously bad service. Too bad, because this place could have been good.

Pros: Table top Pac-Man machine

Cons: Pathetic Service from pizza boys who can't fill an order correctly, mediocre 'za

WORST PIZZA EVER!!!

by elf65658

WORST PIZZA EVER!!! This pizza is bad even for Portland. They advertise as authentic New York pizza which is a crock. They obviously haven't been anywhere near New York because the crust no good and the sauce tasts like ragu. As for the toppings...the sausages are literally like boulders, the pepperonis had no flavor and the vegetables were thick cut. They should be jailed for false advertising. No self respecting New Yorker would ever be caught buying a slice from these guys.

If you like your pizza with attitude and too much of everything....

by freddy555

this is the place for you. We ordered it with three toppings and the pizza literally weighed around 5 lbs. Some of you may like that, and that's fine, but if you do you had better also like your toppings uncooked and your crust soggy. They put so many toppings on that it's just annoying to eat and, like I said, they don't get cooked through. The pizza was completely inedible and we chucked it and ate something else.

New York Attitude with out the Pie to Back it Up

by greg8789

Looking at the 94 reviews before me, most of them said this place had great pizza and slow service. It was not the service that was slow. They quoted me 30 minutes to make my medium pizza on a Friday night at 8:30pm. They were not backed up, not really crowded. It was just their standard time to make a pizza. The pizza came out in about 25 minutes, they were right. The pizza was ok, the crust was too crisp. The dough was nothing special. In my opinion, Chicago style pizza means great dough. Their dough was just so, so. Would I go back? No. I can have okay pizza 10 minutes away from my house, not the 20 minutes to get there, plus the 30 minutes for my food.

Mama Mia, that's a primo pie

by PootsinBoots

With all the haute pizzas to be found in Portlandia (chi chi with exotic ingredients), I must confess to being a good ole Americana pizza lover. I mean pies stacked to the ceiling with ample toppings atop a blissful sour dough crust. But for me, what makes or breaks a pie is the sauce. I am addicted to the sauce. And the Flying Pie delivers in all these areas. I LOVE this place. While a bit on the spendy side, and jam-packed with kiddies running amok, the pizza here is one of the best I have ever had. Be sure to order the Italian seasonings on the top. Mmmmm, it is artery-hardening goodness.

Pros: The pizza is fantastic

Cons: The dining room can get a bit messy with the crowds and the kids

Yum! Outstanding pizza, room for large groups (with reservations), fun

by thaifamily

This was the first pizza place I found in Portland that actually hits you with the fantastic garlic, bready, spicy aromas you should smell in a pizzeria! From the moment you walk in, you know it's going to be good.

And it is good! And it is HEAVY. We love this pizza, but it is very loaded with cheese and all the great toppings. Be careful of your arteries and balance it salad.

There is a large downstairs room that is good for larger groups. Probably a good idea to call ahead for reservations for groups over 6 -10.

Very casual atmosphere. Good for kids because there's lots of noise already.... but it's all fun noise.

Pros: Wonderful pizza, casual atmosphere

Cons: Save up your calories for a meal at this place!

i dont care what you say two guys back, this place rocks.

by thisplaceishaunted

Flying Pie Pizzaria is a little gem just a wee bit further out of the inner SE that i happily stumbled upon one day. The place has a very old school feeling about it.. and all the guys that work there are really friendly and upbeat. There are pizza crusts to choose from from new york to chicago style... and yes there is an abundance of toppings........... but i am a vegetarian and this couldnt have worked out better... vegetables are good for you.... and if you love the meat... you will get plenty.... and if you think there are too much of the toppings.. i guess just ask for less next time. as far as pizza goes...... i love pizza... cardboard style.. deep dish style. pizza is yummy in all its different forms and this place has a great variety and has just a nice feel to it.

Pros: delicioso

Cons: people that think there are too many toppings that don't just ask for less toppings

Flying Pie is mediocre....period.

by safeman1402

It's really too bad that Portlanders have no clue what outstanding pizza is. Yeah there's a handful of decent pizza places, but NOTHING to brag about. I agree with with everyone who complained about the ridiculously long wait, and the overabundance of toppings at Flying Pie. Don't give me any garbage about getting your money's worth by getting flooded with a half-pound of pepperoni. Have you ever watched the Food Network's specials on pizza places? You sure don't see toppings dominating the pie. It's all about the freshness and quality of the dough, sauce, cheese and toppings. AND being cooked in a wood-fired or coal oven, not on a conveyor belt contraption!!! I come from Phoenix, where for years it was a problem getting great pizza. But the East Coast and midwest transplants finally established numerous outstanding pizza restaurants there. Hopefully this can happen here too....before I get too old that is.

Pros: atmosphere was ok

Cons: ridiculous wait, ridiculous amount of toppings

been eating here for ten years and still love it.

by tsolo

To only a few of the knuckle-heads who say it's the worst..Too many toppings? Go elsewhere and NOT get what you paid for. You bet that if I buy a $30 pie, it had better have some substance. Had to use a knife and fork..boo-hoo. To anyone complaining about having to provide a receipt..bummer. How would you like it if some person came up and claimed your food? You'd most likely be more frustrated with that. To the person who said there is only one restroom with a burnt out light..there are in fact four restrooms, and always light for me. As for the grease..well I cannot entirely disagree, but I do see them flipping over the pies to fight that. To the person who said it takes 5 minutes for them to throw a skin, bluntly, you are full of it or you don't know how to read a clock and in either case, your statement is false. Also, I have had to wait a while for my food when the house is not packed, but guess what, they take orders over the phone too as well as catering orders and make pies for the theater. I can only guess this has an effect on the wait. I think the staff there is rather patient, considering some of the people who had all that time in line to decide what they wanted go up unprepared. Maybe y'all should step to the back of the line and get it together so I can get in and out sooner. I'd never say don't go there, but if you can't handle old-school parlor appeal with all the kids having the best night ever there, perhaps this isn't the place for you. I know this place has become tradition for many, I have heard of kids growing up to take their kids there..that's good, tried and true. I won't claim it is the best overall, I haven't eaten at every pizza place to truly say that, but I will claim it is the best I have ever eaten.Don't get me wrong, I can see that some folks have well founded complaints, but overall, it is a good product, and the overwhelming positive reviews prove that.

Pros: good food

Cons: can be chaotic, but worth it

More is not better

by krutec

11/29/07. Ordering was relatively quick. Guy taking out order was nice, easy going. We liked the staff and the atmosphere. We ordered a half and half pizza. The wait was less than stated and when we got our pizza we were looking forward to a nice hardy meal.

I had pepperoni on my half. WAY overloaded. The crust (thin) couldn't handle it. It was soggy. The only crisp part of the crust was the very outside edge. My wife had Ms. Piggy on her half. 3 times the meat as the pepperoni, so it just looked like a heap on the dish. The crust was literally soaked through. Just not good at all. Sloppy. Soggy. Just a mess. It's hard to remember a bigger let down.

Waste of money

by jms490

After reading such great reviews, had to try it! We love pizza. My personal fave is a traditional NY pie...thin crispy crust with a topping or two. I really would have better enjoyed a frozen pizza from the grocery store than the one we got here. We ordered a thin crust with pepperoni. The crust wasn't that thin, there was goops of sauce and the flavor was kind of funky in a not so fresh sort of way. I really don't understand the rave reviews because this place is very average. The service is weird too. How in the world someone would rate this higher than Kens or Scholls is beyond me.

Pros: old school video game

Currently my favorite in Portland!

by pdxman1234

So I'd have to say I'm a bit of a pizza snob. I've worked in pizza as a youth for years and have come to respect the art and business of pizza making. I feel as if I'm on and never ending quest to seek out the best pizza in Portland. There is a fierce competition in Portland for the best pie and I believe that Flying Pie is the best I have had in town. Now I'm not saying it's the best pizza I have ever had, I'm just saying its currently the best in town. I feel the best way to judge a pie is by getting one with half cheese and half pepperoni. Thats it!, no other fancy toppings to cover up the flavor of the sauce and bread. The fancy toppings come later only after the pie passes the test. And holy moly does FP stack that pie sky high! One or two slices and you will be feeling stuffed with goodness. I generally rate pizza from 1 -10 and since Citysearch only goes to 5 thats what I'll have to give FP. But I really want to give a 9 for overall satisfaction.

Never again

by beav

I used to love flying pie, went there for years. The last few times I went I noticed a drop-off in quality and service, so I gave it a 6 month wait or so.

Well after dining last night, never again! First the minor:

My order was completely botched. OK, and frankly it wasn't really that crowded but the crust was wrong as were two toppings. Hey I can live with that as long as the pizza was good.

Well the pizza was no good! It didn't sit right from the beginning, but really waking up with violent GI distress )at 4 AM was the clincher!

You could not pay me any sum of money to eat this garbage again. And please if you have kids (or small animals) please do not subject them to this as their constitution's may not be as strong as ours.

Pros: Ummm....

Cons: Horrible food service has gone way downhill

Great Pizza!!!

by jaja999

Some of the best pizza I've ever had. Obviously the guy who wrote the last review sounds as if he should probably start going to anger management classes. How long did he expect the pizza to take to bake? 5, 10 minutes? Sounds like someone has had too much Dominos. Or maybe he should have had a beer instead of soda to mellow him out a bit. Their prices are good and the staff is very friendly. Flying Pie and Apizza Scholls are the two best places for pizza in Portland. No doubt!
