So.. I bought a what they told me was a "chow chow mix" puppy there. The boy who sold it to me tried to tell me that the roof of my "girl" dogs mouth was black b.c those are the genes of dark tongued chow chows, except on the roof of her mouth. I ended up buying this chow chow mix (which they didn't know what she was mixed with, which is really strange for pet stores) ESP since she was sold "from a breeder". I'm pretty sure breeders know what they mix the dogs with if its a reputable one, at least. I purchased her for 600. I ended up taking my dog to get insured at Hannah pets. However once my dog was examined the vet made the biggest commotion ever about my puppies vagina or lack of being OBVIOUSLY funny looking--stating she was a hermaphrodite. and this is the FIRST pet in all her years working at Hannah pets that they will NOT insure. The vet then began to tell me how this dog has serious problems down there, and I would have to take her to a specialist which would cost hundreds of dollars just for a consult, and get vagina reconstruction (there was only 2 places in Oregon who even do this) on her to fix her problem because she was very prone to various diseases like UTIS and other viruses she could easily get. THIS would also be another couple thousand of dollars. she told me I should return this dog as it is not worth it. WOW I was SHOCKED. did she really just tell me what I think she told me? yes. it was real and I was so sad. However, my intentions were to buy a dog from the humane society at first, but then I fell in love with her. in no means would I not seek to help this dog out before I decided what to do with her. couple hundred dollars later I took her to the specialist and they told me she would need to be spayed at their place because it would be a different more in-depth procedure, which would cost $$$$. By this time I had called the manager of the store who was compliant with what was going on with my dog and said I could return her for a full refund it I wanted. However, I bought this dog to deal with the loss of my other. I was in NO way going to return her to a pet store who "didn't even know" about her deformed privates which were VERY obvious. I'm pretty sure ALL REAL pet stores check their dogs out before purchasing them. so it was highly obvious they were hiding this dogs condition, as she had also been there for months before sleeping in her own poop, as she had ALSO contracted a UTI while being there. I was appalled! The fact that they are SO careless that they "mislooked" something that would cost THOUSANDS of dollars to fix, was a simple lie. I would never let my dog go back to that cruel place. I wanted to help her, and that is what I did. The owner returned a measly 300 dollars back, because "after contacting the breeders, they would only give 300 back" which was soon to be an OBVIOUS LIE as well, after the next part of this.
I felt so disgusted at the fact that this pet store was blatantly lying to their customers who had faith in them, just to make a couple hundred bucks. that's peanuts, literally nothing! you want to make real money? try being honest. I knew this pet store had more up its sleeve then I was told. I decided to have a DNA test done on my dog through wisdom panel (the most accurate and BEST DNA testing for animals out there). Funny, I almost knew the results before they arrived. my dog had NO chow chow in her WHAT so EVER. She was ACTUALLY a german shep/ausi shep mix. I could have told you that myself after this. So the pet stores fellow "breeder" who he had been in quote on quote "contact" with during this process was an absolute LIE. I should have definitely done my research before shopping here for dogs. Although I LOVE my dog and would never let her go back to such a horrible place, BUYERS NEED TO BEWARE OF THE FRAUD THAT HAPPENS THERE. My vet even said she seemed to be younger then the paper work from the pet store. Which makes sense since they were making EVERYTHING UP. this is PROOF that the puppies that come from here have been from pet mills, abused homes, found on the street and taken here, anything that is absolutely wrong and corrupt--you will find at this pet store. BUYERS BEWARE. sad I had to write this. but u shouldn't be fooling people.

Animal house's employees are very nice, and have always been patient with me. It's a small store, so every one knows everyone.\r
I like shopping here, except the fact that their rats are ALWAYS sick.\r
Every time I go there and least on

The puppies are not from puppy mills, I am a licensed breeder and I sell to both animal house stores, like many breeders do. Also, before bashing a company maybe you should learn proper grammar. It just shows how ignorant you are when you spell torture as torcher. It is a bit messy at times but for Christ's sake it's a pet store. They take exquisite care of all the puppies in their care. I will say from time to time non-breeders sell to Animal House and they take them because otherwise they would be taken to the pound. Many of which are kill shelters.

Unfortunately any idiot can be licensed to breed dogs. You are not a good breeder because you sell to pet stores. A good breeder only breeds sparingly and does full evals of their clients BEFORE handing them a puppy. They make people sign contracts to give the puppy back if problems arise or they can no longer keep the puppy. The contracts also state that the puppy must be altered and NEVER bred. I know a few too many people who were stupid and bought puppies from animal house and now call themselves breeders. These puppies could be yours and now you've contributed to the overpopulation that is being picked up by the shelters. The majority of shelters are now no-kill despite the overwhelming amount of puppies being born because of people like you who think it's okay to breed and add to the shelter's plight. Help the shelters instead of yourself for a change. Foster some shelter animals, spay and neuter yours and do some good. I don't shop there because I don't support bad breeding. Quality animals aren't sold behind glass for outrageous prices. Support your local shelter, not your local puppy mill. Please save a life instead damning all of them.

I have just two things to say. I adopted a rescue dog. He appears to be a doxie-chihuahua and was purchased at Animal House. (His receipt from the store says he is a doxie-pug but I see no pug in him.) Subsequent to the Animal House, he was with two consecutive families. When I got him, I discovered he had ear margin vasculitis. This is a serious immune-mediated chronic condition. He also has significant behavioral issues, but I attribute that to the two families. I can only wonder if he came from a puppy mill or irresponsible breeders and that caused the medical condition.

I really enjoy this pet shop. The people are friendly and helpful. The fish I buy there are healthy. I like the fish-of-the-month program, it's just kind of fun. The puppies and kittens are clean and neat, bouncy and full of energy. I'm in there at varying times of the day or week, and it's never been filthy or smelly. The birds look to be healthy and well cared for. We've bought hamsters from them and they have always been healthy. The advice I've received on different questions has always been appropriate, and they have gone the second mile to be helpful on more than one occasion, even staying late so I could get the flea product I needed when I couldn't get there on time.

I always try to support local business and when I first went to Animal House I was mortified. They are selling dogs that have serious health problems. The dogs smell so bad from living in unsanitary conditions. They house male and female rodents and rabbits together so chances of you adopting a female that is pregnant is pretty high. We know because we had this happen a few years back when we got two rabbits for our kids and both of them were female and both were pregnant. This store would be ok if they would stop selling dogs and cats and learn to separate the rodents and rabbits.

Also, guinea pigs and rabbits are kept in the same cage area and are fed the same food. Rabbits and guinea pigs need very different diets so the fact that they do not take care of the animals that they have is just horrible.

I feel the worst for those puppy mill dogs, and yes they are puppy mill dogs. No reputable breeder would sell to a puppy mill as they want to make sure they know where their animals are going and they also have requirements for their animals, like being fixed so that their animals do not reproduce. That is what a reputable breeder would do, not those selling to pet stores, those are puppy mills. Anyone who thinks otherwise is very wrong.

To Animal House, why don't you take a little more care with your animals? Stop selling cats and dogs and let a rescue come in everyday and adopt out all those unwanted dogs and cats that probably came from your store to begin with and then were bred and then bred again and then not wanted anymore. People need a little education on the horrors of puppy mills. Go to YouTube and type in Puppy Mills and you will learn a lot from watching those videos. Reputable breeders do not sell to pet stores, puppy mills do.

Was it my own fault for not looking into this store a lot better before acquiring my last puppy? Yes! Would I buy from Animal House again? Heck No!!!
The Dachshund I fell for was in the store for way to long. He got use to eliminating in the Kennel he was being housed in and is now going to have to go away because even after spending hours and day's and months trying to help him to understand that his business needed to be done outside like my other two dogs already knew, Nothing can help him to understand that he needs to go Outside! We have tried leashing him inside so we can keep a very close eye on him. Walking him with the others is almost impossible as he was 3 months old when we bought him from the store and was never taken outside. How do I know, even when I was purchasing him I could not get him to walk with a leash on. Hello, why with all you kids working there could you not take them out to do their business? Because like the person said above you are all either talking with your "boyfriends, girlfriends or eating lunch at the counter"!!! Yes you offer a check up at Berry Hill Vet, they are pretty good, yes he got a shot BUT he still can not get use to the leash, he soils my entire house with Fecal and Urine and now is being taken to Dachshund Rescue of Oregon because I could not train a kenneled puppy to use the outdoors to do his business!!
Shame on you, and Shame on me, NEVER AGAIN!!!

I went into the store to pick up some vitamins for my Tegu and a feeder rat for my boa. I am new to the area and was excited to see a pet store so close to where I live plus, I love helping out the small business owners and keeping things local. Here was my experience... First off, I was disgusted by the smell of the store, it was that of something rotten and decaying, not to mention all of the fly's swarming around. This might be expectable if it were summer and the doors had been open but it is December and cold. This means there are fly larvae in the store and hatching somewhere! Not what I would call a clean atmosphere! Anyways, I asked the kid working for some help to find what I was looking for, it was a very specific vitamin. He was far too over confident and gave me an earful of B.S trying to sell me his product and bad mouthing the one that I have always used. The humor in this is that he had never even heard of the product but still found reasons to tell me how wrong it was and his right theirs was. I found him very condescending and very overpowering with his opinion. It was really frustrating as I knew what I wanted and just has a simple question as to the location in the store and if they could order it. I didn't need a lecture on how I am not taking proper care of my reptiles from a kid who didn't look old enough to drive. Finally, I got him to move past the subject and I asked about a feeder rat and told him that I wanted a medium sized one. He then goes on to tell me how they are all the same size and it didn't matter. I have eyes... they ranged from small to pretty big and it did matter. I just felt so unwelcome and was not respected. I understand that most people are not experts in every animal, reptile, and critter on earth but they all need some general knowledge to work in a place like that. However, I know what I need to do to take great care of my reptiles and I didn't need someone belittling me because he was trying to look good for all the other girls working or whatever it was. It got to the point where I couldn't believe this kid was actually getting paid to treat people like this. Neeless to say they don't have me as a repeat customer!

I find it interesting that they still sell dogs out of cages. A freind of our bought a small mixed breed dog (for $300) there a few weeks ago. So far it has been diagnosed with two different parasites. Each time the owner of this store has denied any fault. Be very careful if you decide you must go there.

First off, I couldn't believe when I read this from a reviewer:

"...is now four years old, but has a slipped disc, which is common to this breed, and had nothing to do with the store who sold the puppy, nor the reputable breeder, who provided extensive background on this doxie's history?

Haha. I??m sorry, but reputable dog breeders DO NOT SELL TO PET STORES. Reputable dog breeders love the animals they produce and do not simply hand them over to any schmuck who gives him enough cash, nor will they allow them to be caged in a tiny kennel all day on bare wire with little/no toys or stimulation, especially such a critical stage in their life. They also get them altered prior to them going to their new home if they are going to just be pets so that greedy BYB don??t pump out more dogs.

Anyway, this pet store is crap and staffed by lazy kids. I have seen the employees just chatting away with friends while there are dead decomposing fish in the fish tanks and animals are without water in the bowls, or their food is old and nasty (such as the omnivorous reptiles).

Anyone who says they take care of their animals properly is ignorant of animal husbandry and/or a complete moron.

Un-altered rabbits and guinea pigs in the same enclosure is not proper animal husbandry. Reptiles kept with no thermostat to control their temps is not proper animal husbandry. Goldfish jam-packed into small tubs is not proper animal husbandry (goldfish need 10 gallons PER fish ?? there??s a reason why the majority of these fish die in a few days/weeks when they can live to be 12-25+ YEARS) Also, ??feeder? goldfish are horrible. They are full of disease (due to being over-crowded and kept in improper conditions) and cause thiamine deficiency in many animals. The fact that they sell these animals with the intent to be fed to other pets shows they are clueless. Hermit crabs kept on 2 inches of substrate without a bowl of both fresh and salt water is not proper animal husbandry. Japanese/coturnix quail housed in small bird travel cages is not proper animal husbandry. Tarantulas kept in cages with cotton balls in their water dish causing the cage to be over-run with mold is not proper husbandry and is unsanitary and disgusting. Not to mention all the dead rotting cricket carcasses in many of the animal cages.

Those are just off the top of my head.

If they are so knowledgeable and great about taking care of animals, why is it that they have a big sign in the reptile/fish area that says NO GUARANTEES whatsoever? Every reptile breeder I have purchased from online offers a health guarantee for AT LEAST a week, if not a month.

This store is just plain awful and is the reason so many people are against selling live animals in stores, and why it is becoming the law in some places.

If anyone still thinks this is a good pet store, take pictures of the animal set ups and post them on a website geared toward the care of said animals, such as tropicalfishkeeping(dot)com, monster fish keepers, kingsnake(dot)com, ball-python(dot)net, the hermit crab association, etc. and ask them how good their husbandry is.

Pros: Nothing

Cons: Overpriced dry goods, awful animal husbandry

I've been going to both the oregon city location, and the milwaukie location for years.. In fact I remember the sign going up in milwaukie and walking past for days waiting for it to open. The fish have always been wonderfully taken care of at both, and sadly only oregon city will continue to Carry the salt water. I've gotten to know a lot of the staff and know that they KNOW what they are doing, yes, sometimes there is a new person, but they learn. Yes the male and female bunnys and mice are kept together, but like someone else pointed out if there are any 'surprises' you can take them to the store for credit to get supplies you need. Their prices on some things are a little high, but most things are decently marked. And if you don't shop around who's fault is it you overpaid? As for the person saying they sold a small can of flake food for 22, your nuts. I buy the large 7.06 tetramin for 19.99, and if you don't want to pay that, you can buy it in bulk by the pound. I have nothing but good things to say about both these stores. If you came into petsmart at the wrong time (which I worked at once briefly, I could not stand the dead loss there on not only the fish but the small animals as well) you'd see things A LOT WORSE. Animals make messes through out the day and there are a number of cleaning tasks there that are being done until they get back, once again, to the same ones to be repeated again.

My daughter's boyfriend bought a weiner dog from Animal House. We adore him. He is now four years old, but has a slipped disc, which is common to this breed, and had nothing to do with the store who sold the puppy, nor the reputable breeder, who provided extensive background on this doxie's history. I have gone into animal house several times for sweaters for my doxies or particular food or pet care. The employees were ALWAYS very helpful and nice. I never saw the store as anything but busy and yes, a bit overpriced and a bit messy at times, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I know for a fact those puppies are from puppie mills. and way over priced. Some come from breeders, but others do not and people need to know this before purchasing any pet. Puppie mills need to be band!!! Its pure torcher to those animals, and when you buy a dog from a pet store there is no garantee where it came from. There are shelter out there of all breeds and before buying a puppie from a store, please, please look around at the ones who really need homes. The ones at animal house need homes really bad too, but what happens to them when they are not sold? Where do they go? I sure hope they do not go to the pound an there is no way of knowing. When you buy puppies from a place like this, you are supporting puppie mills. so be careful an curteous please.

The fish department is by far the nicest looking part of that store and they are treated well. The tanks look clean every time I step foot in that store and the reptiles always look fed. If you go to any other pet store you will see algae on the tanks and a lot less variety of fish and reptiles. The owner of that part is a very smart man and takes very well care of that part of the store. The Puppies and murchandise are over priced and cruel.

I cannot believe all the good reviews this store has. Either the people giving the reviews are naive and have no clue how to care for animals, or they're employees trying to make the store look better than it is.

Almost a year ago, I needed a cover for a 10 gallon tank. Petco was out of stock and I didn't want to order one online and have to wait for it, so I decided to stop buy this local pet store.

They were charging $15 for a basic screened ten gallon tank cover! Everywhere online these range from $5-10 at the MOST. My friend also needed some fish flakes, and they were charging $22 for a small bottle.

They also kept all of their animals wrong (well I'm not sure about the fish as I'm not a fish person, but for everything else, they were housed poorly). They kept guinea pigs and rabbits together, rats in glass cages with pine bedding, the (puppy-mill) puppies are kept in very small WIRE-bottom cages, the hermit crabs had no substrate to bury themselves in (if they cannot molt properly they DIE) and had moldy food, the tarantulas had feces, cricket parts and mold all over the cages, the emperor scorpions were kept in a dry cage under a hot lamp with no hide or cover, they kept turtles and bearded dragons in the SAME filthy tank, they had CRICKETS in the corn snake cages (pro tip: corn snakes don't eat crickets), the blue tongued skink was lying half way out of his hide with his eyes closed and skin sunken in, probably dead, and they had a big sign saying NO GUARANTEES ON REPTILES (meaning they know they are sick and dying!), and they were ALL OVERPRICED! You could get HEALTHY captive bred animals online (including shipping) for some of the insane prices they were charging for their sickly animals that most likely would die off within a few weeks or need expensive vet care.

Unless they have drastically changed their ways within the year that I was there, I cannot recommend this store to anyone.

Also, NO respectable breeder sells their animals to PET STORES. Breeders who care about their puppies/kittens interview the families BEFORE allowing them to purchase one, and make them sign papers that they will be neutered, returned to the breeder if the family cannot keep them, etc. Also, many of the dogs being sold were MUTTS (not that there is anything wrong with mutts...but why pay $500 for a mixed breed puppy when you can get one from the pound or on Craigslist for free? Unless you love throwing away money) that were being sold for $300+!

On the plus side, at least the kittens had a whole room to play in.

Animal House is an excellent business. The reason that there are sometimes 'boxes everywhere' is because they get their shipments in every Thursday. Yes, it can sometimes be a little messy, but most of it is cleaned up by the next day.

Some of the staff are young, but very knowledgeable (and most are 18 or older.)

Puppies are NOT born/raised or have anything to do with 'puppy mills'. Most pups are purchased from local breeders whom the owner knows personally, priced to retail, and come with free vet check, free puppy food, first shots and worming. As do the kittens. They give the puppies blankets and toys and they are cleaned twice a day.

Fish and reptiles get cleaned frequently (fish daily) and are fed the right types of food. Crickets sometimes get into places where they aren't supposed to be but are not getting fed to ALL reptiles (only the ones that eat them).

All pet stores have male and female bunnies and rodents together. That's just how it is. Animal House does tell prospective buyers of the bunnies and rodents that there may be a risk of them being pregnant, and when things like that are noticed, animals are moved to the back to have and raise babies in their own pen. They even let you sell back the surprise babies for in-store credit!

If you don't like dogs and cats being sold instead of adopted from shelters, thats fine. Just have an open mind when looking through this shop because they have many great pet products.

Overall this is a great family oriented business offering great deals on animals and products. Everyone should visit this fun and lively atmosphere!

I have never been to this store without someone being super friendly and helpful! Their prices are competitive and their staff genuinely cares about the animals there. My husband and I recently rescued a tank of fish that we just couldn't take care of and they took all of the fish and got them healthy again. Great people!

Animal House is a great little pet store. I always find what I need in there and there is always someone there willing to help me. They also have all sorts of animals there in cages. The prices of the dogs there are pretty steep though especially for mixed breeds. They are a large variety of stuff for sale there and pretty decent prices.
