We waited forty minutes for our food and our son did not get his dish until we were finished eating. Two children, myself and a toddler ate, it was$50 and we were still hungry after we finished so we went and bought more food elsewhere.

Groupon initially took us to this little gem and we are so thankful it did! We have dubbed it our favorite restaurant of 2010 and are making Chez Machin a part of our NYE tradition and eating there for our last meal of the year. In a word,

Really enjoy eating here. Pleasant atmosphere, warm and hip. Crepes are delicious, in a subtle, humble way. I also had the steak, which was cooked perfectly. I will continue to go back here. Good food, reasonable prices.

I went here for lunch with a girlfriend and I have to say, don't let the outside of this place fool you. Had I not read the reviews I would have kept on walking..
But once you go in the door everything changes. Its cute! And clean, and you feel comfortable. And then there is the food (very good)
Really, you couldnt ask for more out of this place.

Pros: Delicious food, good service

Cons: Can get crowded

My friend and I ate lunch here recently and I was pleased with the food, service, and atmosphere that Chez Machin offered. It was hard to decide what to get-the menu offers several options that all sound good! They offer many egg/scramble dishes, salads, soups, and sweet/savory crepes. I ordered the chicken, brie, and avocado crepe and it turned out really well-the flavors went great together. My friend ended up getting the special crepe which included chicken, spinach, and pesto. Both crepes had a delicious sauce drizzled on top that complimented both dishes really well. We also couldn't resist getting a sweet crepe to share-berries and custard and it was definitely worth it! I'd like to go back for the happy hour: wine, crepes, and live music sounds nice. Hope to return soon!

Pros: good wine list, breakfast and dinner, local/organic ingredients, specials

Cons: parking's a pain, small inside

This place is a little French treasure, tucked in along Hawthorne - very warm atmosphere, great service, attentive staff, and while sitting at my table was able to view the kitchen and the chef at work - great meal, the French onion soup good and the vegetable crepe, yummy! It was easy on the wallet and wish I had room for dessert - next time! Have been to Paris and this place gives you a moment there.....

I love Chez Machin. I think they have the best crepes in Portland, coupled with a lovely wine list. Best of all they are very affordable and provide a lovely French cafe atmosphere perfect for intimate conversations with friends.

The service has always been very good: timely, informed, helpful, and good-natured. I highly recommend Chez Machin if you like anything French!

This tiny place has a one-burner kitchen, French bistro style tablecloth and an Edith Piaf CD from the 60's. What could be a charming, centrally located little neighborhood place misses the mark completely for the food was not tasty, certainly not French, and reminds one of a roadside Diner fare - minus the fast service. I am from France, and, in past centuries, you could be behaded for serving such mediocre and greasy food. Try other alternatives on that strip, such as the "Bread and Ink" Cafe across the street.

I loved this place! I came here with my boyfriend for dinner last weekend and not only was the food exceptional and perfect for a summer meal, but the tiny restaurant had great ambience with a live musician and cheeful service. I had one of their dinner salades with fried chevre and apples, and my boyfriend tried the chicken cordon bleu. They were both amazing! I plan to return often. Thank you chez Machin!

I recently stayed one night in Porland on my way back from the coast to head back to my home in Spokane. We were sitting in a little bar downtown talking to some people that we met and after some conversation and talk about where would should go for dinner they suggested a place called Chez Machin. After having had a long day of shopping we almost talked are selfs out of going opting for a place that was closer. The people we had been talking too had so raved about the place that we rallied and went that direction. Am I ever so glad we did. What a wonderful little resturant. The place it's self is just charming, the food is too die for and the staff was amazingly attentive and warm. After having been to the coast and all the fabulous places we tried I didn't think we could add to the list of wonderful places we dined. I was wrong... Chez Machin is well worth the visit and place I highly recommend people try. We will ourselves will go again the next time we are in Portland.

I had some good and some bad experiences at Chez Machin over the years but the one I had recently sealed the deal and I will never again go into that establishment. I was eating a light lunch with a friend and ordered a salad. Much to my dismay, after eating a few bites- I saw a brown thing in the bottom of my bowl. I picked it up and I was like one of those clowns pulling an endless supply of scarves out of their sleeve. The brown towel was dripping and when I unfolded it- I finally realized what it was. My friend and I were disgusted and wondered how it could end up in a salad! I gave it to the waitress and they promptly made me a new one however, my friend was done eating by that point and needed to go. I had to hurry through and finish my salad so we could leave. They did us the favor of not charging for the salad but felt compelled to charge us for the rest of the awkward meal. I wrote a letter to the owner to let them know that I was concerned about the food safety in a place that serves towels with their salads. The cook's response when I had showed him the salad was "again!?" so it became obvious that this was not a unique incident. The restaurant owner sent me a return letter letting me know that the towel in my salad was clean and that I could call him with further questions. Wow, thanks for the free (clean?) towel. Don't waste your money here.

I have been to this restaurant many times and I have never been disappointed. The wait staff is very friendly and the food is always delicious. The crepes are fabulous and the bistro menu is exceptional. If things are sometimes slow, who cares. I enjoy having a relaxed dining experience and I always have that at Chez Machin. The back patio is great.

The food is fantastic and it is romantic but the service is slow slow slow. They have a very small 2 person open kitchen with only 2 crepe stones and when they get busy you can see the poor Chef working his butt off as the orders pile up. As long as you either go very early as not to be part of the rush or go with the knowledge that you are going to enjoy a bottle of wine or two while you wait for your food then you will have a wonderful meal. If you bring your children make sure to have lots of coloring projects and to give them a snack firstin case you hae to wait. BUT the food is worth it. Very wonderful french inspired soups and specials and the most wonderful and imaginitive crepe creations. ENJOY!!

Not to familiar with the area, we walked into the restaurant and we were greeted with someone immediately. We were seated in a yes, a very small space but that was part of the whole experience. The service was great and the food was beyond words. We are going back and will recommend this place to our friends. Oh, and by the way the choices on the menu are endless. Make sure you look at their specials on the wall!

The food was great but after a moderate wait, three of the five meals brought to our table were completely wrong and it wasn't just our table. Every table got at least one "oh, I'm sorry" in the 45 minutes we were there. Maybe it was an off day, but we probably won't try it again.

I've been going here regularly since 2005 and it's never let me down. I like the casual atmosphere, the small size, the charm of the interior, and the hearty crepes. Contrary to some of the other reviews, the dessert crepes are marvelous, worth going for in their own right.

Romantic dates YES, also good for popping in for lunch while in the Hawthorne area with friends. The service has always been attentive and very hospitable. The one exception would be during peak times, like weekend brunch, when it can be regrettably slow. Also not recommended for big eaters. The portions are fine but the food is generally light.

Don't come here expecting to be pampered or to get some pretentious French experience. Just come in because it's a friendly little cafe that happens to serve really good French food, and that also happens to come at an amazing value.

Chez Machin is a small restuarant, with an authentic French atmosphere. The menu possibilities are endless, and contrary to all of the bad reviews I have read, the crepes were perfect. The portions are just right, and the service is rather friendly. Their dessert crepes are amazing, especially the Crepe Suzette. They have a variety of mouthwatering smoothies and they fill you up for a great breakfast. This is my new favorite spot!

What a disapointment! Upon walking in the waitress informed us of a 1hr wait (with 3 other couples in the resturant), and continued to discourage others from eating there. Unfortunatly, we stayed. The interior is cute, but the crêpes were not authentic. I wasn't expecting Rue Moufftard, but rude service and dry, overcooked crêpes are not French. The waitress promptly brought us our check after our last bite, about 20mins after we walked in the door. Don't worry Chez Machin, I won't be back.

Went here to have a relaxing coffee and dessert and we were not welcomed at all. The waitress was charmless and basically ignored us the moment we walked in. We ordered coffee and she brought us cold stale coffee without an apology. My uncle who is a French chef ordered cream broulee and I ordered a crepe. Both were digusting. The cream broulee was like a scrambled egg and the crepe was chewy and tastless. We just paid and left as soon as we could...

Two things about this restaurant are highly authentic: the ambience and how long it takes to get served. Sadly when we went the food itself was meagre, very far from French and overpriced (if you do go, the set menu is far better value than a la carte). All mouth and no trousers.

I immedeately loved the character and atmosphere of this establishment. Small and cozy, it has the feel of a french cafe. The crepes were made quickly, and were quite tasty. A good selection of sweet and savory crepes were offered, with a nice wine list. The filling may have been a bit too filled with cheese, but the buckwheat crepe itself was of a great consistency.

PROS: Quick Service, Good Atmosphere
CONS: A tad pricey for what you get, charge extra for credit transactions

I have been to this restaurant many many times over the past year and have never been disappointed. The food is always delicious, the service is fine, the atmosphere is romantic and cozy. If you plugged your ears you might actually trick yourself into thinking your in a little cafe in France (I have found that no one speaks French in this little restaurant, not even the wait staff). The French Onion Soup is a great starter, the crepes are always mouthwatering, and they will custom make a dessert crepe for you if you ask. My favorite is a vanilla custard crepe drizzeled with Nutella. Also, for two people with beer and wine, our tab is never above $30. I too am suprised by some of the negative reviews because I just love this place!

Just tried to have lunch there during a mid-afternoon. Food didn't come until 1 and a half hours after ordering. Waitress didn't know what was going on for a full hour. She promised a free dessert for each of us, delivered only one.

Main crepe was actually OK. Dessert crepe was poor. Waitress says they have a new chef, so I'm not sure that the Portland Mercury review still applies.

I'm writing this to encourage more people to go, so this great spot stays open. European ambience and authentic frenchie menu make this creperie a gem. The savory crepes are made with buckwheat, thin and delicious. They're big also, but none of the ingredients overwhelm, so you may have room for a dessert crepe, which, contrary to an earlier review, were thin and also...delicious! The thinly sliced almonds on my apricot jam and chocolate crepe were even freshly toasted and crispy. The wines were also good, and the salade Nicoise was great, with whole baby red potatoes of the perfect texture and roasted red peppers. I'm surprised about the bad reviews...maybe a cook in training? This is my new favorite place...mini France.

If you enjoy thin crepes that melt in your mouth, skip dessert and just stick with the buckwheat crepes that come as your meal.
I've tried the dessert crepes twice (in case the first time was a fluke) and both times they were tough, rubbery and poured way too thick.

The only thing Chez Machin could to be more authentic is add a Menu Formule of one sale and one sucre with a bowl of cidre for Prix Fix. The crêpes are authentic, and unlike other local creperies, they are generous in proportion and come-out in a reasonable amount of time after the order is placed. It would be nice if they stayed open a little later for the dessert crowd and added a Café Ligeois to the dessert menu.
