I love this bar for the atmosphere. The wallpaper is velvety and the decorations take you back to a psychedelic flashback. There is a restaurant on one side and a lounge on the other. It is usually pretty dark in here so a great place to hide out. The food is filling and standard.

I have been eating and drinking at Dot's since 1992. When I lived out of Portland for 12 years every trip I made back would mean at least one night at Dot's. The deluxe grilled cheese is my pick and don't forget the french fries YUM! You can eat healthy here and they have great vegetarian options. Bring cash or your checkbook they do not accept credit cards. Everyone knows about the crazy wonderful velvet decor, my favorite is the picture of spock!

I am just visiting my boyfriend in Portland, so I had no idea what to choose when he asked me what I wanted to do for dinner. He took me to Dots and we had a great time. There is a great atmosphere; good art, a layed back feel, a pool table.
This is definitely a hipster hangout, and it was dimly lit and rather romatic as well. We shared the chips and salsa, which was fresh, authentic and spicy. He got the Farmer's Chicken Sandwhich, and I got a salad with grilled cheese. The dressings were awesome!
The bartender/server made my drink wonderfully, with just the right proportions.

And I agree with Annonymous - if you can't afford to tip, then you CAN'T afford to go out - Simple as that. Go to your own bank and withdraw cash (to avoid fees) to go to Dots, and you will be happy as a clam when you leave!

Pros: Ambiance, good food, inexpensive drinks.

Cons: Being a weekday, the server was a bit overloaded because she had to tend bar as well.

.

wow. I can't believe someone would go on one of these things to justify not tipping their waitress because he had to use the atm. That's the biggest bunch of b.s. i've ever heard. They just work there, it's not their fault that they don't take cards and if you know that, why not just bring cash? oh yeah, because you're so spineless you need an excuse not to tip. wow. i bet you get a lot of dates with that kind of class!

anyway, though, I do love dots. It will be interesting to see what's going to happen after the smoking ban. I think it will be a lot more pleasant to be in. I smoke and still get grossed out. I love the vegan platter and gentle ben.

Cons: can be a little big chaotic sometimes

I'm surprised about the poor service reviews I've read on this site. I'm usually the first to complain about poor service, but can't find anything wrong with this place. We go a couple times a month when we want a kicked back atmosphere, great drinks and good food. Yes, "good" food, not great. You're paying "good" food prices and you get a consistent product which, in my opinion, is a definite step above the standard pub fare and is anything but, standard. Once again, service has always been top notch. I haven't pulled a late night session at Dot's in many years (we tend to go late afternoon or early evening), so maybe this is when the service declines, if at all?

Pros: Great value, great drinks, good food, excellent service

Cons: None, really . .. It's not their fault they don't have an outdoor patio!!!

This bar is cash only. This is an inconvience, but any repeat customer should be able to come prepared. Cheap, good, greasy bar food. Fabulous selection of cheese fries, chili fries, tofu fries, you name it. The drinks are cheap, the staff is attentive. The lights are dimmed, and this is a great place to hang out with friends and get a couple of quick drinks if you are passing by. I will gladly bring cash, and enjoy the velvet wallpaper and the portrait of KFC founder Sanders. PLEASE tip the staff, it is not their fault that this place is cash only.

I love the food here, the hummus plate is my favorite. However, with the lack of taking cards, I'm constantly at worry to go there. The ATM charges me a fee and so basically I figure this. If I'm eating at Dots, the ATM fee is your tip. So that's why I'm "too cheap to tip you guys". getting a credit machine can't be that much of a cost to you, you've got the business. MOVE ON!

Dots is a very nice archetype of what restaurants in Portland are like. Good food, good service and great atmosphere. There are two big rooms and lots of seating, but it can get crowded on the weekends.

Do they seriously think that wonky ATM in the back is going to cut it forever? C'mon Dots, step into the 21st century and take debit/credit cards.

It is maddening and I avoid this place because of it. That ATM is sick.

I am only rating Dot's TO-GO service in this review. I am a pretty usual customer of Dot's since a group of us hang out on Clinton Street. Usually, I am more than satisfied with the food. But, I ordered a Jack and Chili quesadilla and some cheezy fries TO-GO around 7pm on a Thursday. The food was ready promptly (about 20 minutes, just as the cashier said). I took it across the street to the bar and when I opened the quesadilla, I was pretty disappointed. The quesadilla was just a tortilla folded in half and stuffed into the TO-GO container, not cut into pieces, and had a glob of guacamole on top with chips scattered all over the container. I didn't get any plastic utensils or napkins to eat with so I had to go back across the street to get some. I finally got to sit down and eat my food after cutting it into smaller pieces so I could eat it. The chicken was shredded, which is nice for a quesadillas, but it tasted like cheap, canned chicken. I am not a fan of super spicy food, so I made sure that the chili's were not too spicy. Unfortunately, I don't think there were any chili's in my food! All I could taste was canned chicken and some cheese. I am sadly disappointed. I really enjoy Dot's and the food usually, but last week's visit was not good.

This small dark eatery has been a local favorite of mine for several years now. It all started years ago. I was brought here to eat, right before my 1st GWAR concert. That's when I was introduced ti thier famous "Cheese Fries". I've been hooked ever since. The fries are oven baked with melted cheese, and really good. They also have a good turkey bacon sandwhich. It's a little greasy, while falling apart on contact. Dot's is a fun place to eat. The dark atmosphere is calming, with a good cup of joe. The evenings get busy, especially weedend nights. You don't have to wait long for your food, just to be seated. The customer service needs a little improving, and more in the evenings. This little place fills up quick, so be prepaired. But, if you like good cheese fries, then come on down to Dot's. I recommened it.

The atmosphere is really cool and a lot different from other places. The velvety 70's style walls and pictures make it really interesting. The food was pretty good, but for the price they don't even include french fries--you have to pay for everything seperately. The service was really really horrible. They barely spoke to us, and never checked on us once. I would recommend this place for late night grub, or the munchies.

We love this place! The decor is fun and the servers are almost always super-helpful and happy, but the food is why we come back here. My favorite is the vegan vavoom (pita, cucumber, tomato, falafel, cucumber sauce, hummus, yum), and he goes for the burger with herbed cream cheese. Vanilla cokes rock. And you can smoke in here! Seriously good food and drinks.

Cons: dark atmosphere is almost too dark, particularly in non-smoking section.

I loved the walls of Dots. It has some really unique wallpaper with interspersing silver and black patterns. The rest of the the place has a red glow to it. And the paintings on the walls are intriguing.

I had the Turkey Monterey, thanks to a brilliant recommendation that I read in the Citysearch review. Grilled sourdough, crammed full with turket breast, Monterey Jack cheese, tomato, lettuce, mustard and mayo. It was dripping grease down my fingers the whole time I was eating it. Yummy! It passed the ultimate greasy food test. It was grease-licking delicious!

I had the spicy fries which came with spicy tofu dipping sauce. That was tremendously disappointing. The fries were overtly salty at the bottom. My rock climbing partner had the exact same comment. Plus they felt like they have been either, fried once before and then again or been left sitting out for way too long. Too much oil had soak into the fries and they weren't crispy but soggy.

Go for the amazingly greasy sandwiches and skip the fries!

Every time I go here, it is a different experience. They play a great range of music and have a good solid menu. There are no frills with the service which is nice because it is a place that I like to go when I want to be left to talk for hours. The decor is very eclectic and interesting. The last time I went, I shared a wonderful grilled sandwich and fries with my friend. We hung around for 2 hours chatting with no pressure from the waitress to leave. Wonderful place!

Good for munchies, all right, but don't come 'spectin' to be wowed by the food. It's incidental anyway to the fun, it's-always-midnight-inside atmoshpere and good juketunes. I don't get my panties in a bunch over the jalapeno or pepper fries like everyone else seems to (again, they're fine for the munchies but they're not exactly Parisian.) Decent veggie burger. A hipster see-and-be-seen kinda joint, but a charming one. Did I see a Ms. Pac-man by the bar?

This vegetarian-conscious cafe serves everything from burritos to hummus plates. The price is right too and they have nightly drink specials-- great place to sit with friends and eat good food. The only drawback is they don't accept credit/debit cards, only cash or checks, but there is an ATM conveniently located by the bar.

PROS: Vareity of foods, prices (food)
CONS: Does not accept credit/debit cards

As a Portland native I have been a DOT'S fan for a decade. This place never ages, its kinda got a timeless ambiance, always current in Portland sub-fashion.
For first timers this is kinda like entering the twilight zone.
The vegie burrito with the cilantro sauce is heaven, along with the cheese fries.
Yum.

Dots is a charmer. The food is excellent, especially the quesedilla, and pepper chicken burger. The drinks are strong and newcastles on tap. the interior is a perpetual nocturnal slumber. The only thing missing is a jukebox, but the wait staff music taste is usually on spot.

Dots has great food and for the price per portions it is indeed an excellent value! Try the BLT w/ guac and fries...yum! Service has been crap everytime I've been..the waitresses can be unfriendly and once they set your plates down forget refills on beverages or brews w/ out having to knock them over for it. Decor is awesome and the darkness inside at high noon is welcomed for a weekend hangover. Go to Dots you won't be disappointed!

The thing I love about Dots, besides it's velvet wallpaper, big-eyed 70's paintings and doll-parts chandelier, is the food. The portions are generous and the food is consistantly fantastic. (Except at 2am where quality goes down with the rowdier crowds)

Dots has a way of taking fries and sandwiches to a heightened state.

Try the Turkey Monterey. Imagine crunching into golden brown sourdough, cool lettuce & tomato, then crispy pepper bacon, creamy, melty Monterey jack cheese and real juicy slices of turkey breast. This sandwich alone keeps me going back to Dots again and again, even when the cook is backed up and the waitresses are frazzled.

Hint: Rest your eyes from the summer sun and retreat to Dots at noon on a Saturday. You'll get the best service and the best food and the least smoke from the bar portion of the place.

I'd recommend Dots as a good place to get a little drunk, not too sure about why people rave about the food.
Ok, the cheese fries are good, but nothing all that special about them. That they have spice or peppers on them is great, but the fries don't taste fresh. Burgers aren't special either. The guacamole is lemony and mushy. Our table was not impressed bythe food.
On the other hand, the decor is fantastic as were the drink special prices. Great feeling to the place in a cool part of town.
Just don't expect good service. We weren't the only one who had to track down the staff for help, more drinks, and the bill.
Think the surley waitstaff may have been a "schtick" the place used 10 years ago, now they just have bad attitudes in general. Yeah, that's not fun.
Anyway. Good place, not great.

The cheese fries rock, the Greek platter rocks, the ambiance rocks. If you are into Celine Dion and DKNY, you probably will not like this place. If you are into restaurants decorated with scores of sock monkeys, check it out! One of my favorite college hangouts. Maybe the waiters aren't friendly, but what do you expect- all hip people in Portland are surly!

At my last and final visit to Dots, I actually got a bill before my food! And just a question, do the servers ever smile? They ignore you the whole time you are there, and if you are lucky enough to get your food or a bill, they don't even speak acknowledge you! Why would anyone eat here? Oh yeah, they're open late. What a selling point...

For those of you vegetarians who miss the meaty comfort food, you must try: Garden Swiss Patty Melt! French Fries! Spicy Tofu Sauce! Yum! Add a pitcher of PBR and you're ready to eat some damn good greasy vegetarian fare.

Don't worry about the service. The more you go, the better it gets, plus you have to leave yourself enough time to play a game (or two) of pool and order an extra pitcher of beer. Music's great. Booths are cozy. And wall's are covered with sexy black and gold velvet wallpaper! What more could you want?!?!

Been coming here for many years, usually for lunch. The service is usually much better at lunch time then it is late in the evening when they tend to be packed. The fries aren't the only thing worth trying...the sandwiches and burgers are all good (including the chicken burgers). The caravan platter on the appetizer menu is a meal in itself and great for vegetarians. Just know that this is a "hipster" spot so it sometimes has the annoying Portland attitude.

Dot's is not the greatest place for food, all around. But, the cheese fries here are worth driving across town for at 2AM!!! And, it's a cool funky little hang out for two or a small group, especially later at night.

Pros: Cheese Fries!!!

My bookclub met here recently, and we ADORED those cheesefries! They're still talking about them! The burgers were excellent, and the service was pretty good! Don't love the smoke, and I HATE paying for each glass of soda. Ridiculous! I had been hearing about Dots forever, and found it to be just as I expected. Good choice.

Pros: cheese fries, all food great

Cons: smoke, $$ for soda refills

I have gone to Dots for years and its only downfall would be poor ventalation. I was surpried to read here that smoking is not till after 10:00 . it seems no matter what time I go I come out smoky, ick! Great food though!!! And good value!! Get the cheese fries:-)

I am a "kind-a-sewer" of quality fries around the city, and yes, McMenamins and The Horsebrass do have awesome fies, but, the jalapeno cheddar cheese fries at Dots are worth the trip, even a long one. Just don't let a hippie or wandering Jerry Garcia fan trap you in a conversation at the bar!

Dots' cheese fries are the most fabulous addition to the food world in general ever. Although, the service is SO BAD...you just have to take it with a grain of salt when you crave the food...and tip accordingly...

Dots is great! The menu is extensive with something to please everyone. The service is generally pretty good, but can get slow when the place is packed; more wait staff on those nights wouldn't be a bad thing. I am bummed that the smoking area has shrunk to only a few tables though, makes it difficult to get seated for cocktails on a busy night. Adding the full bar was one of the best ideas ever!!!

If you like dark places and kooky surroundings, Dot's is the place for you. Also, if you like to eat large piles of fabulously greasy food...Dot's is the place. The garden burgers are actually good, the hummus is not just for health nuts and there's something full of spice (oh yeah, the fries!) that kicks ass 'til next Tuesday.

Pros: good food, good hangout, late hours

Cons: no non smoking area, no parking, full of hipsters

.

The service isn't always great (in fact, sometimes it's downright non-existant), but the atmosphere, taste, and price can't be beat.

It's great for vegitarians, and they have a fantastic bar. We eat there once a week or more.

Pros: Inexpensive, Great Food, Fun Atmosphere

Cons: Inattentive waiters, sometimes crowded

There's no better place in town to find cheese fries. Portions are huge, greasy and dripping with cheese (opt for jalapenos, too). The caravan platter is a tasty option, as well. Check the board for specials.

Dot's is a great value and great food. Sandwiches are excellent and the ambience is great for a date or just a quick bite. The decor is wonderful and original and the staff is generally very amiable.

When there is a bit of a crowd settle in for a wait, and the beer taps could use a little rotation occasionally but other than that it is practically perfect.

Leave your credit card at home.

Try the fries with the spicy tofu dip. Don't be scared away by the word tofu... the fries are plenty greasy and unhealthy. Cool place with a good vibe.

Cheese fries done right. Good beer on tap. Service can be a little slow, but if you're at Dots who cares. Try the Caravan platter, it will feed two.
