The Grotto an outdoor sanctuary and cathedral that is breath taking. You walk through acres of lush botanical gardens, while viewing spectacular religious art and statues. May through Oct you can attend Catholic mass at the Shrine outdoors at 12 noon. The serenity and beauty fills your soul. They have a wonderful gift shop and special events through out the year. My favorites are Christmas, Mother's Day Mass and in July the Blessing of Animals.

PROS: Beauty, Serenity , Peace, Tranqility

Located in a sprawling region north of the city where beauty is not abundant, these botanical gardens are an oasis set on 60 acres of land. Technically a Catholic sanctuary, The Grotto affords peace and quiet in place of the din of the surrounding area. Ponds, statues, shrines, and wooded pathways populate the setting. Don't forget the gift shop.

this catholic shrine is absolutely beautiful. it doesn't matter if you are religious or not, you are bound to appreciate the many acres of trees, the beautiful grounds, church, and decorations. a beautiful statuette is set into the side of a rocky hill. give a five dollar donation to ride the elevator to the top and visit the glass fronted meditation chapel overlooking portland. at christmas, they have lights and celebration!

PROS: very cheap, very beautiful, very surprising
CONS: none--even in the rain, it's cool!

The Grotto is one of Portland's hidden treasures tucked away in such a subtle spot that it's easy to miss. However, many people frequent this luscious place.

At first glance all that you really see is a church for Roman Catholics. The interior is beautiful but not outlandish. A gift shop is attached as well as an outside altar for special masses that take place. Around the place are statues of many saints surrounded by lovely bushes.

The main attraction is at the top. Yes, there is a top to this wonderful place. Buy a ticket at the gift shop to take the elevator up to a completely ethereal world full of flowers and statues. This garden is well maintained and taken care of throughout the year. And from this high peak you can see the city of Portland spread out in front of you. This must be what a slice of heaven is like looking down upon the people.

It's always peaceful at the Grotto, one that never becomes tiresome.

PROS: Spectacular, breathtaking
CONS: none

If you live in or are visiting Portland and don't stop by The Grotto, you are missing one of the most beautiful places in the city. The Grotto offers Catholic masses and has a wonderful gift shop. There is also a wonderful altar carved out of the hillside and a sanctuary available by taking an elevator to an upper level. Also not to be missed is the annual Festival of the Lights held during the Christmas season. It is truly glorious.

The Grotto really is a must-see, especially during the Festival of Lights at Christmastime--the grounds are a forest of lights. Take the elevator to the upper grounds in the springtime for a serene afternoon and a view of the city.
