Your heart may bleed from all the tragically ironic hipsters surrounding you, but then your stomach will staunch the wound with its joyfulness. The food here is amazingfantastic. The staff is helpful and everything is clean! The twenty-somethings trying to look Peace Corp with their overpriced hemp belts kind of annoy me, but then again, I am just a bitter forty-something who wonders why youth must always be so oppressed.

Holy cow--haven't had food this great in a long time. Amazing food and extensive drink menu. You must order the beet salad. Very fun atmosphere and the staff is great. I can't stop telling people about it!

This place is quite hip, but it's not so cool that you can't sit down and have a good meal and a delicious drink. The food is a bit pricey, so try it for happy hour. The burgers are so good- the food here is vaguely Asian, so the burgers have interesting toppings. Also try some of their incredible drinks. A very nice ambiance here, too.

Asian slant on food, exceeded expectations for food and service! Great drinks, many 30ish clients. Awesome food, from hors d'ouvres, entrees and desserts.

Saucebox is Portland chic. It's on the pricey side, but has a decent happy hour. The drink list is impressive, and the food is very good. The menu is full of excellent pan-Asian offerings -- interesting things like Korean ribs. The seating can be tight and the service slow if its super busy. In a town that usually goes to bed early, Saucebox is a good option for night owls - it's open until 2am on the weekends. It sadly no longer has pool tables.

Came for happy hour and it was packed! We sat upstairs and thc service was a little slow. However the cocktail of the night was amazing. Prices were good too. Will be going back:)

I was expecting a rowdy loud experience, but took the option to eat in their dining room and was surprised to have such a quiet, peaceful dinner. After dinner we had a cocktail in the bar. A DJ came on and we enjoyed the show. The crowd was entertaining. Not quite a five star review but not that far from it. Definitely a nice night out.

Great Vibe. I love the happy hour. You have to try the asian chicken wings. I go to this place after work at least once a week. It is inexpensive and delicious. What more could a girl want?

sure the happy hour CAN be decent but even the H.H. food quality can be spotty and dinner is a complete write off. Saucebox started off being about fun and great cocktails then the food stepped up and it was a great place to spend a few hours eating, drinking and quality music and people watching...now...not so much.

I know it sounds funny, but we went here for dinner and as we were leaving we decided to stay because they had a VJ! I know, sounds so 90's but it was a lot of fun to sit and watch old music videos and have another drink after dinner. Dinner was good. Service was good. The atmosphere rocked!

Been to Saucebox a number of times, but always late night . Love the atmosphere, but drinks can be pricey for my usually low brow range. Finally able to catch their Happy Hour before a show, and I was so impressed.

Well priced drinks ($3 Sapporo), and a fantastic food selection, $4 (!) each for a fantastic Miyako Burger and Pork Spring rolls.

The Khao Soi was meh, but everything else made up for it.

The service was prompt and friendly. The place was full, but the atmosphere was calm and we got our food in about 10 minutes. We came downtown for a show and I expected to be rushed. But the staff was so efficient and friendly, we had enough time to relax and enjoy a well-made Sazerac.

Great experience. Will be back soon.

My friend has been talking about this place for years and I finally tried it. My salmon dish was great. The ambiance dark and inviting. They were out of my favorite scotch but had a great selection otherwise. All and all, a nice night. I'd recommend.

I went to this place 3-4yrs ago and it was so disappointing that I wrote them off. Recently, my friends wanted to try this place and since I was the only one who's been there before, I agreed. Well, I can now say all 5 friends I went there with wrote this place off as well. It was Saturday evening/night, but the place was barely busy (hello, a red flag...), yet it took forever for our appetizers to come, took even more for our entrees to come, but the desert took "only" 15min. Sigh. All the entrees (halibut, salmon and pork shank) came out really salty that we really didn't taste anything but salt.

I love this place. It's best after dark, sitting in the dim candlelight, soaking up the swanky atmosphere and buzz, people watching in the big mirror above the bar. Then your food arrives -- everything is beautifully presented, tastes even better than it looks, and the happy hour prices are a steal. Does it get much better than this? Sure the staff can have an attitude, but that's part of the charm. Over the years as the bar and restaurant scene changes in PDX, I still keep Saucebox in my top 5.

I'd give 1/2 a star off for having a hard time finding parking yesterday, but not an option in rating system here. Everything else was easy and great. Hard to find a better deal in town. My favorite happy hour in town. Bartenders are very nice. Fun to sit at the bar and watch drinks get made.

I have never seen so many people packed into a bar! I went with a couple of friends, the dj was playing 80's music, the drinks were interesting and delicious. I love the tropical cosmo with guava in it. It became harder and harder to get a drink as the place kept getting busier and harder to get to the bar. Generally a memorable night but it would have helped to have a second bar or something on such a busy night. I really liked the place otherwise. I'll definitely be back.

It was a sleepy, rainy Sunday night, but the room, food and drinks made us forget about the gloom outside. I had the salmon which was perfect and my girlfriend, a light eater, had a couple of appetizers. She loved the tapioca dumplings. Just a great place to have open on a Sunday night. It is hard to find anything outside of a hotel that is open downtown on Sundays.

Fiance and I went to Saucebox, excited to try some new cocktails and get some dinner. We were seated promptly, got our drinks and appetizer as expected (appetizers were bland and tasteless). Then the long drawn out wait for the food occurred. After waiting 45 minutes we asked when our food would be ready. Our server actually told us that they prepare the food for the dining area before those of us sitting in the bar section. Apparently our money isn't as good as theirs. After several inquiries with our server, she said they were plating it up and it will only be a couple minutes. 30 minutes later (without any food) we told them we were leaving. Worse dining experience we've had. SBX=SUX.

I'm getting older, I am not going to say how old, but this place consistently delivers a late night vibe that takes me back! I really enjoy the music and the drinks are some of the best I've had. I wish the late night menu was bigger but I've always enjoyed what I've ordered. The food is good.

There are so many great restaurants in Portland that there is never a need to revisit one in the same year. I love eating out and trying new things but I have to say that my dark darling Saucebox, keeps me coming back week after week for the happy hour drinks and food. It is my preferred hangout because of the ambiance, food, drinks and most importantly financial accessibility. It isn't trying too hard but impresses anyone I bring with me.

Other favorites of mine are Castagna Cafe, Cafe Mingo, Bluehour and Nuestra Cucina.

We really enjoyed our dining experience. I had the salmon and my wife had the ribs. Both dishes were delicious. Great cocktail list. The place is dark and moody, music interesting. We will definitely be coming back next time we are in town. I was told there is late night entertainment. Looking forward to experiencing that and trying more of the cocktail choices. All and all a great evening.

I was totally disappointed with saucebox after hearing such great things about their happy hour. Their menu is pretty extensive and they have items grouped from $1 - $5. I ordered the summer/fresh rolls ($3) and superior noodles ($3) and their cocktail of the day ($5). Granted the prices seem cheap, but the portions are tiny. That would have been totally fine and at this place expected, if the quality was good, but I thought the dishes I ordered weren't even worth it when it came to quality and taste. You can get better rolls at any other thai or vietnamese place, probably the worst rolls I've gotten in a long long time. The noodles were okay, but they were served in a bowl and half of the bowl was the sauce, so by the middle to end of the bowl it was like eating soup and kinda gross. I won't be recommending or wanting to go here again.

I was here once for happy hour and thought the appetizers were so good that I would like to try a meal. We finally had dinner here and were not disappointed. The food was excellent. The mix of ingredients and flavors were unique and absolutely delicious! Good selection of drinks (beer, wine, sake, cocktails). The wait staff were attentive and professional. We'll definitely be back.

I just had the most amazing drink... A Goji Berry/ Passion Fruit/ Lime Drink called the "Eternal Youth." Apparently, Goji berries are full of anti-oxidants. Does that mean I can go in for cocktails at Saucebox and get younger with every drink? Nice!

My husband and I have been to the Saucebox twice. Our first time was in Nov. '07, and I had the best crab cakes I've ever tasted. Craving those not so long ago, my husband and I drove to Portland to enjoy them again. Unfortunately they said their menu changes and they were not currently serving any at the time.

Though bummed, we order and munched on soy beans at the table. They were busy that night and it was taking a while to get our food. We were enjoying each other's company so it didn't seem that long. The waitress group us each a salad roll and thanked us for our patience. Once our food arrived, we enjoyed it and gave the waitress our credit card to pay. A minute later, the manager arrived at our table and said, "I know you had to wait awhile for your meal and we'd like to apologize. You may not want to come back, but I would like to pay for your meal tonight or offer you a $50 gift certificate to come back and give another chance." We took the gift certificate and were amazed at the awareness and hospitality. We gave our waitress a gracious tip and then thanks the manager on the way out. That is how a restaurant should treat their customers!

great night out. i was with a group of friends. we had dinner in the dining room then moved into the bar afterwards for couple, (if not too many) yummy cocktails. the food was delicious... an array of flavors that made me feel like i was on vacation somewhere warm. the cocktails were great... i have to say, the "hi-ito" (sp?) which was a hibiscus-infused-mojito-ish drink, was almost too good.... the perfect mix without being too sweet. i think refreshing is the best way to describe it.
the music - fun, and the bar tenders we very friendly and seemed happy to have us all lined up along the bar. so, moving into the bar after dinner was the perfect close to our night. fun. fun!

This place is always my fallback. It is the place when nothing sounds good, "Ya, let's go there again." I am always in the mood for it. Lots of ways to eat. Small plates from appetizer list or full dinner in the white room. The bar can get hectic sometims when it gets busy, but it is super fun to peoplewatch even if they are bumping your chair :(
I can't tell you how many cocktails I've had here. So many occasions and nice memories. I love, love, love...

Ordered the tapioca dumplings to start, which, besides being bland and unexciting, were just plain weird in texture. (Think sticky Styrofoam-ish dough with chopped chicken bits on the inside).

The steak was very mediocre at best, nothing memorable about it, not particularly tender though it was ordered medium rare, and the use of seasoning seemed more like a garnish or perhpas just a mere afterthought. The trout was simply awful. Entirely too fishy; tasted exactly like licking the bottom of a lake. To our disappointment, we were told the chicken was unavailable after having sat perused the menu for at least 15-20 minutes.

To top it all off, the bathroom set up looks like something straight out of an elementary school: there is a single, non-private, community, half moon steel sink at the entrance of the men and women's bathrooms (the same sink is for both sexes) and the women's bathroom is tiny, with two steel stalls and a small steel shelf under a boring mirror. With all of the trendy decor throughout the rest of the restaurant, why did the bathroom get overlooked?! A very disappointing experience overall.

This is a great place- good food AND service (a rarity it seems these days). Chic atmosphere, but very friendly. The wait staff (hosts, bussers, waiters, etc.) were all very attentive and worked well together to make the service very efficient. The food and drinks are good and cheap for happy hour! Highly recommended.

Great music, tasty drinks, hip and fun spot to hang out, listen to music and chill with friends.
Casual or dressy, you will feel comfortable. The wait staff was awesome and very helpful, over and above the call of duty when there was a red wine spill. Had an after hours work party there and it was great
Love it, love it. love it !!!

Always great service. Their happy hour food is such a great deal. Try a famous blook orange drop - phenominal. Drinks aren't too sweet - always well balanced. Great time for a bachelorette party. Dinner menu is always amazing! Creative, delicious and always hot and fresh. Try the squid - flavors that are light and clean.

I would recommend this place to those who want more than just good food. The food was great, but the people watching and vibe of the place, the DJ, the drinks and staff made it an experience. We made reservations later so we could catch the DJ and have drinks after dinner. It was a good time. Can't wait to tell my hard to please brother about this place!

I was informed that the dining room I was being sat in would be closing soon almost like they were warning me not to take long (it was 9:30) The server and food runner smelled of alcohol and appeared drunk, the bartenders made my drink with flavored vodka three times: I asked for a stoli soda. My food took forever almost 45 minutes! We decided to head into the bar area for dessert so they could close the dining room. The bartender was snide to us and after all of this the atrociously unattractive 40-year old dj started playing music way to loud and way to heavy for anything I'd ever want to listen to at a restaurant, or anywhere ever before 11pm at night! I had a bad experience and I will not return.

Pros: i enjoyed leaving

Cons: everything

I love the happy hour at Saucebox. It is cheap and the menu is big and interesting. I am rarely disappointed and bring out of town friends there constantly. They are always impressed. We get so much for so little money. They have $1 menu items! Occassionally, service can be on the slower side, but it has usually been packed when that happened. Servers are friendly and accommodating. I only wish they served espresso drinks. That is the only thing I want before I leave. Pete's coffee is up the street though.

I have been going to The Saucebox for years, but on my last visit I tried a new dish that was out of this world. It was Kung Pao chicken!? I know, weird. But, seriously, it was a high brow rendition of the old fave and it was really done to perfection. I always get the salmon dish, but this is definitely competition. Drinks good as usual. Love the sushi. Will be back soon.

I ate here a few weeks ago with my family. The ambience is gorgeous, very sleek and urban. The service was impeccable, we had the nicest server, and the food is delicious, unique and artfully presented. I recommend the tuna ceviche, it is amazing! I could eat it every day. The cocktails were flavorful and tasty. All the flavor combos in the food came together beautifully, they know what they are doing. The waiter made a great wine recommendation for our meals since our first choice was unavailable. Overall, a great dinner, reasonably priced, perfectly served in a lovely setting.

Pros: food, service, drinks, ambience, bathroom

Cons: parking downtown is always miserable

Happy Hour Pros:

I never have to wait for a table.

Food is always good and cheap

Drinks are always good and cheap

People watching and attractive/interesting waiters

Happy Hour Cons:

On the busy days I've been there, drinks and food take longer to get and by the time I am on my last drink, I am paying regular price!

No late night happy hour

All and all, this is a great joint.

I just had the best salmon dish I have ever eaten at this place! One of the gals with me told me it has been on their menu for years and written about, so I googled it and found the recipe online!! I am making it tonight. The reviews on the epicurious site say it is a pretty easy recipe to follow with great results.

Here is the link on epicurious website:

www.epicurious com /recipes/food/views/ JAVANESE-ROASTED-SALMON-AND -WILTED-SPINACH-107073

I am serious people, you have got to try this dish. I am in love!

Cocktails were also delish. Waitstaff were nice, too many tatoos for my taste but professional.

I recommend the white room if you are older like me and want a quieter evening :)

I just got back from meeting friends for catch-up at this restaurant. Now, I must say I had formally had happy hour and enjoyed it. This time, however, I was disappointed :( Items on the menu claimed to be Korean food, but it was more salted then anything. My mouth is still recovering from the assault. At the end of the meal of salt, the bill arrived and it was outrageous. I paid around $30 (the cost was even split between my friend and I, totaling a whopping $60) for a salt. I wanted to walk over to the cooks and ask if they had any formal training or had tasted their food. I did not feel the meal was worth the money (if I wanted to eat salt I could have bought some from Fredy?s for $1)!!! I did enjoy the drinks and the service was moderately good. All in all I wouldn?t eat there again due to the salt content of each item I ordered and the price accompanying it.

Try this place out! Had a wonderful experience. It is a new hangout for me now. Great bartenders and delicious and interesting food. A great DJ came on after dinner and we danced!

We really enjoyed ourselves. The food and cocktails were great. The ribs are a new favorite! Waiters were friendly and attentive. The place has a downtown vibe, interesting and makes you feel like you could be in another city, a bigger city. Would definitely recommend.

Here is how our night went. 15 minutes for drinks to be ordered. Appetizers were pretty good. After waiting for our food for an hour, the manager comes and says the chef dropped the last 2 rib entrees on the ground and the 2 meals would be comp-ed. We wait another 30 minutes for our new order to arrive. The replacement meal (seafood curry) was awful... completely lacking the seafood that was supposed to come with the dish, and the sauce tasted like pure coconut milk. After our terrible meal, the server brought the check and said he had assumed that we didn't want dessert (terrible assumption when the reservation had been made for a 30th birthday). AND the original ribs were still on the bill!

Nothing says summer better than a drink in a pineapple full of crushed ice and smooth rum that has been infused with pineapple or a drink in a coconut. We enjoyed drinks in their shells last weekend to beat the heat. I will be back even on rainy days to bring a little of the tropics to portland. Other tasty treats included a plate of Korean ribs with Kim Chee, seared ahi and to finish the ice cream sundae.

I have found that saucebox is the perfect place for many occasions. I like to go there for a quick happy hour snack before a movie out, but also eating dinner in the dining room is a total treat. And, their extensive cocktail list is fantastic!

On a Saturday night my boyfriend and I went to get a drink and some food. While my boyfriend did receive his food, I never received mine. When I went to ask the bar tender about it after my server never came back I was scolded for asking. I think most restaurants attempt to at least please their guests if they're having an off night, not scold their customers for asking where the food is after waiting a 1/2 hour. The bartender was incredibly rude and defensive. This was third time I have been to this place and all three times the food and service was mediocre at best. After being treated so rudely this time around I will NEVER go back. Funny thing is I've told about five people about my terrible experience thus far, and they all said they've had terrible service as well. They clearly don't care about the service they provide or how to treat customers. Don't waste your time or money, they're too many better restaurants in this town.

I was looking for something a little chic but not pretentious in Portland, and found this gem. Traveling past the smokey, wood-grain, over-decorated pubs and eateries to find this ultra-modern, super clean minimalist-menu amazing restaurant. From the way the place represents itself I had high expectations, and they were absolutely met. I had the grilled salmon, and sampled the green curry and ribs-everything was flawless. The cocktails weren't weak, either. My appetizer, the Hamachi and Avocado, was simply the freshest Hamachi I've had in the northwest. Second to none. I can officially say that the Saucebox is my favorite restaurant in the northwest.

Pros: A true five-star resturant, presentation, taste, ambience, and service were absolutely top-notch.

Cons: Those expecting large, american portions may be disapointed.

Made reservations on Friday night for 4. They were friendly and seated us right away. I'd have to say the service was pretty good. She gave us a LOT of time to decide on food, which some people might deem slow and "crappy" service however I just take that as a classy place that let's you drink and hang out without trying to give the impression they want you to eat and leave. We did a combo of sushi, appetizers and entrees. The sushi was fresh and flavorful. The apps and entrees were just alright. One curry was too spicy, the pork satay was tender but could hardly classify itself as an entree and the appetizers were just plain tiny. A little pricey for my taste. Loved, loved, loved the decor and the overall vibe of this place so will likely be back to try happy hour or for their sushi. If you're on the fence I would say give it a try, but I'd have to say I was a tad disappointed.
