Cheap bikes, nice people

by Toni F. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,308

Citybikes is a great group of people willing to work on any bike. Some bike shops make you feel stupid when you take your bike in, but they never do. And they have lots of women working there and they hold workshops for women who want to learn about working on their own bikes.

Great used bikes and affordable bike repair

by Steve H. | insider Insider | Rank: 15,530

This little shop is a worker-owned cooperative. They sell used bikes and also do bike repair. Everyone there is very into bikes, but they are not pretentous yuppies about it. These are honest, proletarian bike workers. I brought my tired old 70's era Japanese ten speed in after bending the rear rim in the streetcar tracks. This bike isn't worth more than $25 (which is why I love it--I never fear having it stolen downtown, etc.). They set me up with a "new" used rim, installed, for $15. I came in apologizing for my crappy bike, calling it "a crappy bike" and the woman who worked on it chastized me for my ingratitude. "Well no wonder it's not happy! You probably hurt it's feelings talking like that!" What a great place!

PROS: Cheap, will work on anything, unpretentious
