At first look the outside of the building looks nice and prices seem reasonable for the area. There is nothing AT ALL in the building that works, the elevator consistently breaks or gets stuck, the insecure entrances allow people to frequently come in to help themselves to the "bike room" (aka dingy furnace room with easy access and visible from the street). The large windows which looked enticing are in a state of such disrepair that every noise from outside is perfectly audible within the apartment, gaps in the windows and french doors are big enough to let light through (and definitely help hike up the heating bill). I cannot open a cupboard without finding more paint chips on the counter, every faucet in my apartment drips relentlessly and the apartment manager has an endless supply of reasons why she will not respond to any of these malfunctions. While the rent is not too bad the total for all of the utilities every month (excluding cable/internet) is higher than I've ever paid in any other apartment. The manager is rude and insolent and self-serving, unhelpful and usually unavailable. At least once a month I find a notice on my door informing me of a window inspection or some other maintenance issue that requires workers to traipse through my apartment while I'm at work, but nothing is ever actually fixed. The list goes on, you get the picture.
