Just one creative, fun person in management could turn everything around. But unfortunately the Entertainment Director would be better employed at a funeral home.\r

Pros: Music is upbeat; although the same mix over and over;

Cons: Everything else

We (3 girls) came from Longview on the train, with our hotel was 5 blocks away. Decided to check it out. I haven't laughed so hard in soooo long. Host Valentine was a Masterpiece. Had a blast and the pictures we took will live as long

Been going here many years. Too bad there isn't a video comparison possible of ten years ago vs now. It is like management decided around 1999-2002 that they wanted to give up and sabotage the place.

They want to just let it die, but some people stubbornly keep coming so they turn up the lights and charge each stooge $5.

Ten years ago a lot of creativity went into the drag shows and the performers really cared, were highly professional, and enthusiast.

Now they look like fat waddling street bums lip syncing tired songs like A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down. Just awful. Back in the day you'd see a fast pace performance to My Milkshake, or just about anything upbeat and fun. Wild, entertaining.

Just bring a no-dose with my drink so I can stay awake for the drool, unimaginative blather. Awful.

Where's Simon when you need him. Or a gong?

Walking around on stage with a grimace on your face like you hate being there doesn't get it done honey. The only person up there that seems to care on any level is the host, I think her name was Benoit, not sure. Poor thing, only has a stable of wart hogs to work with now.

The bartender there, I think he is Hawaiian has always been great and nice. Really a shining light in the sewer. I bet he wishes he was out of there. They should put that guy in charge of the place.

The dancefloor! - Long sigh. The two (there were once three) dance cages used to be iconic. Now they are gone because apparently they would collapse from the fat cows dancing in them, two at a time. The shortsighted owner couldn't just hire a welder and beef them up? Just stupid. So now the whole ambiance of the dance floor is gone.

The bathrooms - what can I say. I think they just decided the smell of feces and urine would be new and different so they decided that cleaning the bathrooms would be a bad idea. The cow stall in the men's room is a new low. Note to the owner - straight guys don't like the share penis time with gay guys. That isn't being anti-gay, that is just common sense JFC.

Embers died about 2006-2007. All that is there now is a rotting corpse. People still will apparently go by to sniff it though.

Embers is a great club for people who like a diverse young group. Loud music and fun dancing! The drag show is terrific! No door on the girls stalls...that was kind of a bummer!

This place would have earned 3 stars if they didn't make the weakest alcoholic drinks I may have ever had. For $4 I need rum in my coke. I ended up spending $4 per shot (mixed drink was as much as the shots...)

$2 jello shots, I don't think I've ever paid more than $1 for one. Bill Cosby is turning over in his grave.

Despite that we had a pretty good time.

Embers is a great time. There's a big, open room (that's usually empty on weeknights- never been on a weekend), and then a smaller room for drag shows. The drag shows are wonderful! Everyone is fabulously dressed. It's a good place for birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, etc. The drinks are cheap, too.

Drag show leaves much to be desired. These "Ladies" have little or no talent. If you're going to lip-sync--please try to learn the words.

No ventilation--so be prepared to be hot boxed by cigarette smoke.

Dance floor is small, lights are over-the-top in a bad way, creates a feeling like a bad acid trip--and watch out for gropers.

Bathroom stalls are shorter than 5', so be prepared for awkward situations...

Rude large bartender with long frizzy hair wouldn't fix my drink right. He has an attitude problem, and
even threw an object at a customer. However, really fun drag queen, lip synch show with
great costumes and dance moves!

Fun show that went on for a few hours on friday night. Plenty of video poker machines, pool
table and gold fish aquarium inside the bar, must see to believe!

In the back dance club, another rude waitress pushing drinks on me over and over, even though
I had a drink 2/3 full.

But great dark, moody atmospher and fun retro music from Depeche Mode, Human League
and classic bands with real style. Not todays American Idol and rap junk.

Interesting crowd of gay, straight and bi folks. Some were dancing alone, seemed to be
in their own world. Not too much mingling, people seemed to stay alone, or stick with their
group. Older rundown place, but seems to fit the mood and character of the people there.

Embers should have been put out of its sorry misery long ago. It's a pathetic, tired, wannabe excuse for a dance club. They haven't upgraded a thing in 20 years - not the music, not the lame-ass dj who spins only for himself, not the terrible drinks, not the inattentive bartenders, not the ancient drag queens, not the overflowing toilets. And masses of idiot patrons think it's all fantastic! I don't get it. It's as if it's in a black hole with no awareness of time: I would like to be able to dance to something besides "Tainted Love."

I went to enjoy some drinks and some drag queens... I can't complain about either one. On the other hand music was tired, the dance floor was small and the sitting area was tiny, but I still had fun.

Two weekends ago, my best friend & I showed up at Embers looking forward for a fun break in dancing the night away. The drag queen show crowd were feisty, fun and funny. While the atmosphere appears run down and could use some sprucing up, it served its purpose. The bar tender kindly submitted our 80'S song requests that the DJ honored all of them. Thank you! All was good, until some black (cute) dude came along and started to aggressively dance with me and then exposed his private thing to me right on the dance floor! I was angry, shocked and disgusted. He attempted to apologize and left after I warned the pervert to get away from me. Here I thought was once a safe friendly bar to go to and this dude had to go ruin it. I'll never go back due to no longer feeling safe.

Embers always has a love-hate feeling. Personally, I don't like the establishment. Their themed nights are a lot of fun. Latinos Nights were on Sundays, and a lipsyncing show usually happens on the weekends. Drinks are very affordable. The popcorn is always free! There does seem to be a crowd there everytime I go and hardly ever overcrowded.

Embers' covers never make sense to me. In my opinion, they overcharge and it doesn't make sense to me. Meanwhile, the crowd is very strange. I feel like I have to be very feminine in there to fit in with the drag queens. It does not feel like a gay bar at all. The dance floor is really smoky, and the bathrooms are kind of gross. Unless you know someone who can show you around, Embers is not a place to go all by yourself for the first time.

I loved the atmosphere at this club. I was in town visiting a friend and I happened to look this place up on Cityspace just because I needed my fix of Retro & dance music. I had fun. Good music, friendly people. My only complaint was the dance floor, which was a bit too small. Other than that, i will have to come back soon the next time I'm in town.

I'd have to say this way a great way to spend my 21st birthday! The music was a great mix of 80's pop and today's hip-hop, mixed with friendly dancers who didn't get mad when a couple of tipsy girls ran into them. The dance floor is a bit small if its crowded, but nonetheless, a fabulous place to dance. The doormen were friendly, and the drinks were tasty to boot. A great place for everyone - women, men, etc!

Then don't go here. The music was horrible. The selection sounded like something from a bad b-movie. As for the dj's mixing ability... Did they hire an epileptic to spin vinyl or what. I don't think the beats matched once the entire time I was there trying to choke down my watered down drink. I guess this really didn't matter as there was almost no people here to hear it. I used to come down here all the time but not any longer. Ever since Glory and his partner Dj that spun house left everthing has gone down the proverbial crapper.

Embers is by far the best place to go to have fun. Brian is a great bartender, the music varies and is always great to dance to, the drag shows are fun when the dance floor is slow, Oh, and Melissa, Rosie, Shawna, Jamie and Sarah are the best! XOXOXO.

ive read almost all the reviews and im disgusted with the whiners. i went about 2:30 on a weekday and say more gays there than i did at roxys at 2 am. but thats not what really bugged me, heres a tip, if you dont like the music then find a club that plays the music you like and dont complain, i for one liked the music, and the mon through fri daytime bartender was awesome. the fact they even have an authentic drag show is cool, ive seen the sinferno cabaret and i think that dantes has a lot to learn from embers, first i think that sinferno needs to be changed to crapferno and then they need to hire talented individuals (excluding the fire dancers, they were cool)

The one thing I like about Embers, is no matter who I go with I have fun, and for only $5 to get in compared to $8-10 at other places. Also as a women, I like that I can dance without getting molested by some guy who thinks he can touch me. It is fun for the drag show too if I don't like a song that in out on the dance floor I watch my favorite drag queen dance away......its a lot of fun for women...but I some men just don't like it!

I think that just because this is a gay club, it tends to get underrated. It is the best place to just dance your feet right off!!!!! The music they play hardly allows for sitting because it is so upbeat. Say what you will- if you don't like Drag Queens, don't go in the other room! No, gay people won't hit on you there unless you look interested, or interesting to them. I've managed to pick up my share of straights there, but either way- it's all good! Quit being so homophobic and cut loose, cut a rug!!!!

If you aren't discerning about the quality of the music or people, this place is great! The usual corporate crap "house" and Top 40 music is the perfect background for the cheesy denizens of this place. Where Greshamites go to pretend they might hang out with a gay guy or two. (The last point being the only difference between this place and Banana Joe's.)

After hearing so much good talk about Embers, I decided to go down and check it out. I was totally let down. The music is just awful and boring. The crowd is an unpleasant mix of straight college kid's "slumming it" and girls. Almost all straight girls. Not a good gay establishment at all. :( 3 fights while I was there. Will never return.

I have been going to Embers to dance for about 5 years now. It is the best place to dance in Portland. It's a great place to be yourself and nobody cares. The music is great, from 80's to 90's, from techno to pop, they mix it all!!! I would recommend this club to anyone who is visiting Portland or to anyone who just wants to have a great time!

Pros: Great Dance Music, Cool People, Cheap Cover Charge

Cons: Long wait for drinks

.

YUCK!!! The I can not stand this place! Boring Crowd and HORRIBLE music. I guess its better then Bannana Joes... But not by much.

Embers is always a fun place because they have a little bit of every thing. The Cabaret room always has seating and video poker. The club has dancing. Drink service is always pretty sharp. I don't understand why so many people say it is the "BEST" club in town, but it sure is a good one. All the people playing the gay-straight angle need to chill out. Take it from a straight guy, Embers is fun if you want it to be. If you want to be a jerk, go somewhere else!

Love this place! Coolest nightclub in the northwest. Drag shows are just great and overall atmosphere is very friendly. Love the music! Dancers express themselves so freely with whatever they have in mind on the dance floor. A really neat club where anyone can have fun whether they are gay, lesbian, straight, or trans. Its great because it really isnt a straight or gay bar, but mixture of everybody. All these people mixed together in an atmosphere that just generates a heck of a lot of fun in the process. Not a place for homophobic morons, but who in their right mind wants to be with any close minded idiots anyway. Would definitely go here any day of the week with my friends. I have seen girls hold their bachelorette parties here on weeknights and have a blast of a great time with the very campy, entertaining, drag shows.

I kept hearing great things about Embers and have to say I was let down.
The music was as bad as Polyesters.
The service was rude, but I'd expected that from what I'd heard.
The drag queen comedy hour was bad. Ok there is humor to fat guys in drag, but their comedy was lacking. Yes, I could do better.
Too crowded. Has to be a fire code they are breaking.
Also I got the feeling this is a place where straight college girls go to dance ina group and blow off guys. I was with my girlfriend so didn't effct me, but heard enough comments to back that up.
I just feel bad for people who still think this is a "gay & lesbian bar" - Besides the painting outside I really didn't get that feeling.
Damn straights, ruining the neighborhood again!
HA!

Here's the thing... I think if you're a regular like myself, you're pretty much guaranteed a good time at Embers. It's a great place to meet up with friends, get your drink on, and get a little goofy on the dance floor (to a predictable yet fun playlist). But if you're a regular, you probably don't need to read this, do you? If you're new to the place, be ready for anything. Good mingling, okay drinks, young, old, sexy and ugly people alike. Safe and not too meat-markety.

I would not be considered a typical patron of The Embers. Some friends and I decided to go there once and we had a lot of fun. The staff were all nice to us even though we're straight. We loved the people, the dancing, the drinks and the show. Very fun!
