I was hired by the city of Portland Parks and Recreation department but for budget reasons was told to work through Brooks Staffing. Things started out bad and got worse from there. My Brooks Staffing Supervisor Lynn was not very good at keeping me informed: she didn't communicate regular updates nor work very hard to get me to work quickly. After three weeks under Brooks stead, when I still wasn't placed into the position that was waiting for me, I began calling brooks once to twice a day. Lynn was always "on the phone" or "in an interview" and never called me back. When I did get messages they were through the secretary and all along the lines of "we don't know anything yet" and "we'll call you when we know something". The weekend passes and I call again on Monday only to find that I could have started a day before but I "never returned their phone call". (The nice thing about cell phones is that they keep a log of all calls in, out and missed.) Not only had they never called me, they never left the voice mail that they insist they did. When I finally got a hold of Lynn -- she was sick on Monday, she insisted that they "had called me" and "did leave a voice mail". I even gave her an out -- saying that they must have called the wrong number, but no, "this was the number where they left the message". At this point Lynn reminded me that "she was my supervisor" and asked whether I was "still sure I wanted to work with Brooks Staffing". I said yes because I need a job, but the whole situation is asinine. If this is any indication of what it is like to work with Brooks, I won't be there long.

All staffing agencies are really salesmen - selling the employer, selling the worker. As such they can sometimes stretch the truth a bit. I have sent many clients to Brooks and have only heard good things back. The workers have much more reasonable expectations of what services will/will not be provided. You can't ask for more than honesty in a business that is changing daily.
