Hollywood Costumer is one of the best costume shops in Portland. I've gotten some of my best Halloween costumes here. This shop is so fun just to go in and search for the best costumes. By searching around can find one piece and create a whole costume off of that. You can find the most unique and fun costumes ever. If you need a great costume, or just want to play dress-up, head to Hollywood Costumers, you will have a great time.
At Hollywood Costumers you will always find what your looking for and then some. This is my favorite costume store they have a humongous selection of costumes, wigs, face paints, spare body parts and accessories for young and old.
If you looking for Halloween go weeks in advance they tend to get very busy this time of year. The staff are great and will help you come up with something unique, or you can just go with the traditional. Plan to spend a day, not on the weekends too busy and just have a great time trying things on. Its so much fun. Prices are great. Parking is horrible.
THIS IS THE BEST STORE IN TOWN TO "PLAY DRESS-UP". THEY HAVE A GIGANTIC SELECTION OF COSTUMES, MAKE-UP, WIGS, VINTAGE CLOTHES, HATS, MASK..EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR A COSTME PARTY..HOLLOWEEN. I SUGGEST IF YOU WANT TO GET A GREAT COSTUME FOR HOLLOWEEN THEN YOU SHOULD COME TO THIS STORE WEEKS IN ADVANCE AS IT IS "THE PLACE" FOR HOLLOWEEN SHOPPING. THE FEW DAYS BEFORE HOLLOWEEN THIS STORE IS PACKED..TO THE MAX!!! SO GET THERE DAYS IN ADVANCE IN ORDER TO GET WHAT YOU WANT. YOU HAVE TO BUY THE WIGS & MAKE-UP & THINGS SUCH AS THAT BUT YOU HAVE TO RENT THE CLOTHING SO THEY ASK FOR A DEPOSIT IN ADVANCE IN ADDITION TO THE COST OF THE OUTFIT. I THINK THERE ARE CERTAIN OUTFITS THAT YOU CAN BUY BUT FOR THE MOST PART YOU MUST RENT THE COSTUMES. THE SELECTIONS ARE UNBELIEVABLE..EVERYTHING FROM COWBOYS/GIRLS TO HULA DANCERS TO CLOWNS TO NURSES TO "LADIES OF THE NIGHT" TO MAIDS/BUTLER..ON & ON & ON. THERE ARE ROWS AND ROWS AND ROWS OF CLOTHING HANGING UP JUST WAITING TO BE TRIED ON, WHICH BRINGS ME TO THE DRESSING ROOMS...NOT VERY MANY AND ALWAYS A LINE WAITING TO TRY ON CLOTHES..PLUS THERE IS ALWAYS A STORE CLERK TO CHECK YOU IN & OUT OF THE DRESSING ROOM WHICH REALLY SLOWS DOWN THE MOVEMENT OF THE LINE. I FEEL THAT THE PRICES ARE A LITTLE HIGH SEEING AS HOW YOU DON;T GET TO KEEP THE CLOTHES..BUT THEY HAVE YOU AS YOU REALLY NEED A COSTUME AND THEY CAN GET THE MONEY FOR IT. PLUS IF YOU BRING IT BACK SOILED OR RIPPED.TORN OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT THEN THEY CHARGE YOU MORE MONEY. THE PARKING IS AWFUL..STREET PARKING ONLY & ALOT OF THE BLOCKS AROUND THERE HAVE NO-PARKING SIGNS..SO BE PREPARED TO WALK A BLOCK OR TWO..ESPECIALLY IF YOU WAIT TO SHOP RIGHT BEFORE HOLLOWEEN. BUT EVEN WITH THE HIGH PRICES THIS IS STILL THE BEST PLACE TO SHOP IF YOU WANT A "KILLER" COSTUME!!
PROS: LOT'S OF COSTUMES TO CHOOSE FROM..FUN!!
CONS: AWFUL PARKING..CROWDED DRESSING ROOMS
My husband and I needed costumes to attend a "cowboy" affair. The person helping us find costumes was wonderful. The jacket my husband found had horrible stains, the ruffled shirt had a large stain on the ruffles so the stains were very noticeable. Both of the pants pockets had holes larger than a mans hand. My dress was also very dirty and had a huge "wine" (?) type stain on the front. We were assured all of this would be repaired prior to us picking up the costumes. After taking the costumes home (without looking at them, my fault), we found all of the damage. This was Friday after the store had closed. I called the store on Saturday and they suggested I bring the costumes back. My husband had to be on site at the party in less than an hour. Needless to say I spent the day dry cleaning and trying to repair the costumes.
When I returned the costumes to someone in costume herself she stated " I can see nothing wrong". I asked for a partial refund and this was refused. Don't ruin a fun outing by going to what was for me a filthy and "safety pin" experience.
Pros: There are none
Cons: There is no concern about the condition of the costumes
I needed a costume for the weekend to be taken with me that day for myself and my husband. He wasn't able to come in with me. They worked with me so thoroughly that I came away with spectacular outfits. My husband thanked me for getting him such a great costume. I got the credit for Hollywood Costumers expertise and unbelievably HUGE selection. I will definitely come back.
Pros: Huge selection and parking in front
YUCK!!! What a hell hole. High priced and RUDE people running the place. How do they stay in business?
I think it's a front for some other activity. How else could they stay in business. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS
Cons: Where to start. RUDE service HIGH prices.
We ordered and paid for our costumes late November before leaving on vacation. When we returned the weather was bad I started calling on December 20 no answer no voice mail nothing. We drove from Oregon City Tuesday at noon and they were not open no explination on door no number to call except the one I had been calling. We have to leave for Bend in the morning for my daughters wedding and we do not have our costumes. This is very upsetting. I left them a note in their mai slot on Tuesday. They know that these costumes are for a wedding. I wonder how many Santa Claus were disapointed also. If anyone knows the owner please tell them to call. My number is on the inside of their door on the flooor. They have spoiled this wedding day for my daughter. I would not trust them. Sandra
Funny about the customer service comments below. I actually had one gal running around trying to help two different shoppers as best as she could, but standing next to us, right on the phone the whole time, engrossed in some personal call was the living incarnation of "what ever happened to Baby Jane". It was almost worth the trip just to look at this other character who was completely unmotivated to either help me or the other poor gal who was actually trying to help.
But that's not my gripe. Make sure they are open when they say they are, because they might not be! Even if you reserve a costume, try it on, and say "hey, I'll be back on ____, during your normal business hours to get this". they might not give a hoot. Sure, they probably assumed I had about 4 other costumes that I could pull out of my A$$ an hour before I was supposed to go to a party.
Cons: lots, bring and inhaler if you have asthma
I have to pile on to echo the folks who've had bad customer service here. I called to inquire about a costume for my husband and was asked for his "coat size." I replied "large" and asked if they had the 2 costumes ideas I was interested in. The salesperson said she refused to check until I called her back with his actual coat size. I figured out that she meant dress shirt/neck measurement and asked her what a large would be (he's a teacher ok...I buy him shirts off a hangar not the shrink-wrapped suit shirts). She said...maybe 42. I said "ok, let's say he's a 42 then, do you have either of these 2 costumes?" She refused to even look until I could call her back with confirmation that my husband wears a size 42 shirt. I called back at 3:40 and they were already gone for the day (or just not answering the phone). Ummmmm.....there goes one sale out the door. If anyone with a clue about customer service is looking for a small business idea, I recommend opening a costume rental store.
Stopped by the day before Halloween, midday, we were second into the store but it filled up quickly with people and there was NO ONE at the counters. For at least five minutes we were all milling around wondering whether to walk out or not. Then a guy came out and started helping one person. There were at least three workers in the costume area and NONE came out front. After waiting for at LEAST 15 minutes more (remember, we were the second people in there!) and not being helped at ALL, not even a "I'll be right with you", we walked out.
Horrible management! Hire extra help around Halloween, for crying out loud! Are they just stupid or what? Their Halloween orders should have already been pulled BEFORE Halloween, and they STILL would need extra help for their counter around the same time. It's really amazing that they are even still in business! They must have some long-term corporate accounts or something because they treat their walk-in customers like cr*p. I can't believe a business that treats customers so poorly could survive this long.
(2/29/2008) CitySearch says Hollywood Costumers is open open until 4:00pm on Fridays, the Hollywood Costumers website says they're open until 5:00pm on Fridays, the actual business place says they're open until 3:30pm on Fridays. When is this place open?! I tried calling them, but just got a voice mail that didn't even indicate I had reached Hollywood Costumers.
Cons: Hours of operation unknown
I went in to Hollywood Costumes just before Halloween to get a bowler hat for my husband who wanted to go to a party as Alex from "A Clockwork Orange." This is a pretty common item, and I had seen them around town at other places for about $5 but failed to pick one up. When I asked them for a bowler hat, they said they only had one choice, and it was $25. I said, "I don't need something so nice, it's just for one night. I was looking for a $5 hat." They looked at me with a sneer and said, "We don't have any of THOSE." As I walked out, they actually burst into laughter. I went to Lippman and got EXACTLY what I wanted. Hollywood Costumes is run by RUDE people. They have no clue as to the reality of their business, and are completely out of touch with the general public. I have also gone in there to buy professional stage make-up for productions I've been in, but the staff is untrained in how the products work. Finally, there should be a city ordinance against those hideously tacky paintings on their windows....although, I realize that is just a matter of taste.
First, it looks like a huge store from the outside. You get a bit excited. After all, there are all these costumes painted on the outside wall, right? So I go in, and the store seems tiny. I stop to notice all the bright green signs with all the rules, like "Smile, You're On Camera" and "Only 2 Try-Ons" . . .
So I politely ask the older lady where the rest of the store is. She very coldly barked that "NO, that's private!" I have no clue what she means, because when I asked her to elaborate, she doesn't, but just grumpily asks "What are ya looking for?" So I tell her I don't know yet, but I'd like to look around, which I do, but it just seems like only part of the store. I finally walk out, somewhat confused. Is this all they've got?
So I look in the window, and what is there? Rows of costumes! With green signs, indicating it's a customer area. Smile, because you'll be on camera there, too, in case you were thinking about stuffing that Napoleon costume into your purse.
So I go back in, explain that I'm confused, and the other woman grudgingly walks me back there, an area you can't really see from the main floor. After briefly pointing to the sign, she asks "What would you like?" I explain that I just wanted to get some ideas, and that I didn't know yet. So she walks me back there and starts peppering me with questions: How long will you be renting it for? What's it for? What do you want? What do you want??? It was like I had better decide literally within seconds, or else I wouldn't be able to stay back there.
I finally just thanked her and walked out.
I've never encountered worse customer service in my entire life. From the beginning, I felt completely unwelcome, like I was imposing upon them to shop there. I just wanted to leave, which is exactly what I did.
Pros: Seems like they have a lot of costumes back there
Cons: Hard to tell what they have; rude and pushy customer service; seems quite spendy
I would not go here - you will not walk away with a good feeling let alone any type of costume because they breathe down your neck and don't let you try anything on....plus they insulted you by telling you the outfits are too small and you are too big..........They DO NOT LIKE CUSTOMERS!!!
Cons: HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, RUD SALES PEOPLE AND OWNER
The people here are RUDE and UNHELPFUL! Not to mention, as did the person who reviewed them before me, they have inconsistant, horrible hours which they fight about in front of their customers who are being hurried out of the store. I went to the store one afternoon and discovered that their hours are POSTED on their front door as Mon. - Fri 11-4:45 and Sat. 11-4. So, not wanting to miss them, I called the next day and was told that they would be open untill 5:00 that day and that I should show up an hour before if I wanted to try anything on. I went there at 5 minutes to 4 and asked to see their costumes for a belly dancer. I was led into the back and left alone for all of 5 minutes when someone came into the back and asked if I was almost done because they would like to go home early. I told them I would hurry and it would be just a moment. A few minutes later, someone came and asked again. I told them I had 3 more to try and I would be out. Two minutes after that, a little old lady came and opened my dressing room while I was undressed and mumbled something about wanting to close "On Time." Against my better judgement, I returned to show the costume to my husband. When I asked to try it on she demanded to know why I needed to try it on again. So, reluctantly, and with much more grumbling about having to turn the lights on for me, I tried it on and I paid an ungodly $75 for something that I now know has holes, and missing pieces. 3 days later, my GRANDMOTHER DIED, and I was going to have to attend her funeral out of state. HOW UNTHOUGHTFUL OF ME! I called to beg for some understanding and a refund. Instead, I got a rude, NO REFUNDS! NO EXCEPTIONS! IT'S POSTED EVERYWHERE AND ON YOUR RENTAL AGREEMENT! Which I was never told about before signing. So now I'm stuck with a $75 piece of junk I'm not even sure I'll be able to enjoy! Thanks for the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I'll never return, and I hope you can learn from my experience.
Cons: PEOPLE, BAD MERCHANDISE, HOURS, EMPATHY
The costumes here are great, but returns are difficult because even the day after Halloween they stick with their 10-4 regular hours. If you work for a living, this can be a problem when trying to get away to return the costume, especially if you're an environmentally conscious individual who rides the bus downtown or take other forms of mass transit. Otherwise the selection there is awesome and they were very helpful. A little on the pricey side, with prices for me this year averaging 30-50% of what it would cost to buy or manufacture a similar outfit.
