I'm not quite sure about the comments left by the person below, it looks like it's in reference to the previous ownership... in any case, this school has been fantastic under the NEW owner, Nimalka.

The teachers and staff are very helpful

My daughter went there years ago, and we pulled her out. Some of the teachers were really nice, but the owner and one of her daughters were really rude. My daughter told us some very unpleasant stories of the one daughter of the owner who was a teacher, yelling and using humiliation as a form of punishment. However, I heard through the grapevine that the owner sold the buisness a few years ago in 2007 or 2008, so I would just make sure that it in fact new owners before you send your child here. Also with all Montessori's, be sure to check that there are actually Certified Montessori Teachers. Previously there were not when this place was Umbrella Factory. Good Luck!

Our daughter was apprehensive about starting school. The caring staff gently guided her through the transition and now she thoroughly enjoys it! FUF/ Little Stars has helped a typical Mommy's child like mine, to understand the concept of a school. I would recommend this school for any parent who wants an affectionate environment and a wonderful education for their child! All the children there seem to really enjoy the school and their teachers. You know it is a good sign when at the end of the day your child says they don't want to leave! :)

I attended this school in 95' I believe. Those days still remain vibrant in my memory. I never had a bad day at that school. I loved everyone from staff to student. This school was the building block to my whole education. I learned more there in 2 years than I did in 6 years of elementary school. When I was in preschool I could read books, I could write stories, I could add and subtract. When I was in Kindergarten I could Read chapter books, I could write essays, I could do multiplication and division, and I could speak some Spanish and Japanese. When I attended a public school in 1st grade, I was already in 5th grade reading and writing level and 4th grade math. What other preschool/kindergartens do that? I loved the staff, especially Merica. She was so kind and she always told me I'd do something with my life. And I have. I will be attending college next year majoring in Forensic Science and Criminalistics. I feel like I wouldn't have been able to do that without The Fantastic Umbrella Factory. I love this school. I will ALWAYS remember the good times I had there. I will never forget how caring the staff was. My english teacher, Diana Kone, was my hero. I still think of her everyday. She would write me letters while I was in Vermont for the summer to see how I was doing. If that's not special, than what is? Take it from a highschool graduate and a F.U.F graduate, THE FANTASTIC UMBRELLA FACTORY IS AMAZING!!!!

My daughter is TOP STUDENT in private school due to the EXCELLENT beginning at UMBRELLA FACTORY. She was there from ages 3 to 10 (summer camps). SEVEN years we only see hugs, happiness, and EXCELLENT ACADEMICS. She learned READING at age 4 1/2 and love it. Now is in private school doing GREAT. All thanks to the hard hard work of the loving teachers at FUF.
HOW EASY IS IT TO SIT ON SIDELINE AND POINT OUT FAULTS? FORMER owner was dedicated and devoted her life to TOP QUALITY education. TOO BAD PEOPLE ON INTERNET TRY TO RUIN HER REPUTATION. SORRY INTERNET PEOPLE, the kids' success and joy tell the truth. Customers just get mad when admin. won't bend a rule for them - like children themselves.
ALL THE WORLD'S a critic. Content customers don't take the time to comment. THEY SHOULD!
We were in the Umbrella Factory from 1998 - 2005. She still wants to go back to visit! What a shame that a dozen complainers try to spoil such a wonderful place of music, laughter, drama, violin, guitar, and learning was done in such a fun way.

Advice for NEW OWNER: DON'T LET THEM DISCOURAGE YOU. People will try to knock you down no matter how much good things you do. Take 100 students times 20 years. That's many happy kids. Thanks Umbrella Factory. My son is old enough to start in Spring. Lucky boy. I hope new administration will be a wonderful and attentive to a top education.

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory has new owners and a new name. It will be Little Stars Montesori. My 4 year old started there this month. My 1st grader attended Little Stars in thier old building for one year before kindergarten. Both sons have liked it. We find the owner and teacher to be easy to speak with and receptive. I like that the teachers and students are ethnically mixed. Many music and language options are offered free for study in the afternoon. Unfortunately, my son attends only in the morning. I am looking forward to this year. I will post again when we have had more experiences in the new location.

Pros: ethnically diverse, flexible hours, parking, nice outdoor park, languages, musical instruments

Cons: inherrited negative reputation from prior owners.

It's pretty obvious the owner is in this just for the money. She has no compassion for these children. Mine went there and after and abuive incident from the owner toward the parents, we pulled our kids out of there. I don't recommend this school to send your children. You could find a much more loving and nurturing environment than this. The situation is actually very sad for the children as well as parents.

I would not spend my money sending my child to this 'school'. Favorites is a game much played by the administration and avoidance is another. Things might seem disorganized upon first, second or third viewing, because it is- the Director likes it that way. Consider how you want your children to spend their time on this planet, not in your care.

After my son stayed in the Fantastic Umbrella Factory School for one morning, he complained to me that he felt dizzy after. I also noticed a terrible carpet smell in the classroom which I can not stay long in the smell. I withdrew my son from the school after the second day. I complained this issue with the principal and she insisted that there is no odor.

I also noticed that during the tour before we make decision, the girl deliberately kept us outside of classroom for long time and only allowed us at the edge of the classroom for less than five minutes. That way we would not have a chance to get the smell.

When I spoke with the principal for withdraw, I found out she was not willing to refund what I paid for the month and insisted on 30 day notice even though the reason of our withdraw was for the concern of my child's health and carpet smell. So I have to stop my payment.

The principal mailed some general information about all carpets being tested for air quality with nothing specially addressed the air quality in their classroom. She requested us to pay the registration fee even though my son only stayed there for two mornings being dizzy with the smell.

I tried to speak with the principal twice (February 28, 2007 and March 13, 2007) and got no response.

I also hope that the Fantastic Umbrella Factory School could notify all the parents about the carpet odor and allow the parents to reconsider if they want to their children to stay since most parents come and go quickly without knowing the odor of the carpet.

I also noticed that it is very interesting that one of the five star ratings was given by the principal of Fantastic Umbrella Factory herself.

My adult child worked at this school for a very short time. She said the teachers publicly taunted and ridiculed a child and then asked the other children to taunt him also. The little boy cried and asked them all to stop. On what planet is it okay to taunt a child let alone teach other children to join in. There are those who's child has not had a bad experience, or at least they don't know about it. who are writing wonderful reviews, fine, but don't disregard the negative reviews. Perhaps if you are looking for a good daycare, ask to spend the afternoon observing their class first. This is good advise for ANY daycare. These are your children. Investigate, thouroughly any childcare facility before leaving your little one there. This one, based on just this one episode is one I would avoid.

My son attended the Umbrella Factory 5 years ago and LOVED IT ! Now my 3 year old attends there. wHEN I read some of the negative comments, I was shocked. I guess everyone has their own view - -but PLEASE don't let a handful of judgemental people make your decision for you. This school LOVES children, and it shows. It's a SCHOOL where they teach little kids to read and do math, geography, etc. PLUSpiano, guitar, ballet, drama, Spanish and a bunch of other great afterschool classes. Neither of my sons wanted to leave at the end of the day - and sometimes I would have to go run an errand and come back. My oldest son is at the top of his class in Elem. school and it is TOTALLY because of the high academics and great start he got at the Umbrella Factory. Like I said, "people love to criticize"! It's sure easier then teaching a rambunctous classroom of students!
We're in our 6th year of service from this school and it is one of the best in town. Thousands of happy kids have HAD A GREAT EXPERIENCE THERE. Turnover in staff? At INTEL, we have a lot of turnover, It happens in every job - but the teachers they have there now have been there several years. Not too many young teachers see "pre-school teacher" as their total career objective. They usually go on to other things and use this school as a stepping stone. Teaching is a tough job. A lot of people don't want to work that hard! My wife tried it and taught kindergarten...she said "no way, I'm not a saint!"
JUDGE THIS SCHOOL ON THE HAPPY FACES YOU SEE. One of them is my son AND ME!

Cons: can't think of any

FUF's principle and her daughters are very unprofessional and rude to kids, parents, and teachers. I couldn't agree more with many of the parents who expressed disappointment in this school. The management was very unorganized, almost chaotic at times. Don't be fooled by the smooth talking principle, full of empty promises, and she doesn't know how to deal with situations ethically and professionally. I have to say I was surprised at first by the high teacher turnover during the time my son attended the school. Then when I saw how terrible they treat the teachers and the kids, I had to take him out of this school. He's much happier in the new school. Don't settle for FUF, there are plenty of good quality daycare with higher teacher retention and better service. Don't invest your hard-earned money in this terrible school.

From what I have witnessed, a few of the staff here could really use some anger management. I wouldnt send my kid somewhere to people who cant handle thier emotions professionaly.

I found this school to be misleading because it advertises as a "Montessori". But it is not a certified Montessori nor are any of thier teachers. Parents, if you want to send your child to a Montessori, do your homework and make sure they are certified, most places will advertise if they are, or you can ask. A certified Montessori is going to have certified Montessori teachers who have been educated on this unique teaching philosophy. The word "Montessori" is not copywrited so schools like this one can mislead you and get away with it. This staff did not seem to know how to deal with small children well and I pulled my daughter out quickly. After reading the rest of the reviews here, I can see I was right in doing so! They may cut the mustard for before and after school care, but for your little ones you'd be wise to keep searching!

I have to mention first that what I write here is mainly for those with "good" comments about this school. Please do understand that I don't do this with the intention of "ruining" this school. What gains do I get?
I think most parents like me just try to protect other kids from more harm. If your kids are doing well in this school, then congratulations. But please don't say it's beacuse our kids have some issues that we "hate" this school. Do you really think it possible that so many kids of the parents with negative comments about this school all have problems? If there are only one or two bad comments, that perhaps means that. But if there are so many, that means something wrong with this school. Have you ever seen a school with so many negative comments? Kids are so precious that even the slightest mistake will affect their whole life. My kid is doing very well in otherv school; he likes the teachers very much, which was never mentioned when he was in FUF. Right now I still regret that my kid's first school days in his life were spent in this school. Shouldn't teachers (including the principal) be patient and treat kids well and equally? Shouldn't teachers (of course the principal too) do their best to work with parents to handle the problems instead of trying to avoid them? So FUF, if you can't do that , please don't accept younger kids any more. You are really not good with them.

My daughter really liked her school teachers -- and though the old owner that other people are talking about is a strong minded person who hired her girls which undoubltedly was a conflict of interest, I was happy with the school. But the principal retired, and a new principal has struggled through the changes.
We are pulling our daughter out -- she doesn't want to be there anymore, and frankly most of the kdis in her class are Indian now, as well are her teachers. She doesn't understand the language barrier -- frnakly, she is signed up for speech class herself, so this doesn't help at all.
There are questions of safety - no desk person. My child ran to the door, and if I had not been there, the teachers are a bit understaffed and no one saw it.
It is really sad -- you can have a school where the office has issues but your kid loves it and is learning, but now -- I actually really like the principal, but my child is not happy.

I cannot agree more with others' comments about this school. I did not even want to rate this school with any stars. My child was treated badly when enrolling this school, I felt a big mistake to send my child to this school. I tried to report its misbehaviors to the state regulations and unfortunately there are no regulations to measure the quality of teachers but with very minimum safety requirements. Whoever licenses the day care or such school should raise the bar and have more tough guidelines, so this Fantastic Umbrella Factory should be disappeared and stop ruining our children?s healthy development!!!!

My son started at FUF in September(07) and has had an amazing start to his preschool year. He has made so much progress in the last few months we feel that this school has been a blessing to our family. He absolutely LOVES going to school. I have been a certified working teacher for the last 22 years in the Beaverton School District and know how challenging the educational field can be. FUF has many extra classes(piano, dance, bible, language, soccer, etc.)that other schools do not have available in their curriculum. The soccer class even has several games on weekends that children can participate in that are coached by the staff. I appreciate the staff's dedication to my son's well being and I understand that sometimes the staff must have strict rules and enforce them to keep our children safe. I feel confident when I leave him at FUF that he will be well cared for and safe. Thank you FUF for making my son enjoy school and learning. His fantastic start will have an impact on the rest of his educational years.

In response to some of the recent negative comments about our program, here are some thank you's we have recently received:
"We want to thank you all for providing excellent academic foundation and variety of fun learning experiences for our son. Today is his last day and he had a great time at FUF."
-Akash & family
"Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to participate in your wonderful summer school program. Braeden loved all his teachers and students! Hope to see you again next year!"
-Braden & dad
""Thank you for working so hard and giving you heart to the school. The business of education is not easy. We appreciate the quality of support, learning, and care our son receives. He loves learning and he loves school. You and your entire staff make it look so easy and your staff all have magical qualities with the kids. It's easy to tell they work hard-but make it seem so natural and caring."
-Laura M.
"Thanks for having cool games like air hockey. You all are the greatest!"

My child no longer attends the school..so now I can say (not worried about my child getting some mistreatment) what it really was like.

I agree with the most of the parents who have wriiten here. Some teachers are really nice and easy to talk to. Basically the owner family mistreats the parents. I have talked with a couple of teachers while my kid was going to FUF and they were both discontent with the way the principal was treating them. No wonder because the principal was rude to me as well. She would always brag about how she had been running the school for 18 years blah blah blah.

In last Sept, they emphasized that kids take PE lessons everyday rain or shine in the gym area in the back of the school bldg. But this spring the PE teacher suddenly stopped teaching and they said(on monthly announcement) that the teacher was going back to some school and that it was OK for they were not getting any excercise in winter time.

There are many more episodes that I can enumerate but I will stop here. You can get the idea by now. Oh..and my kid was not a BAD kid at all. A good educator/parent would not use such term in any case.

I am a proud father of a child who attends FUF. These poor reviews must have been written by the parents of BAD kids if they were treated that way. My son is a little crazy at times and he's been received with nothing but patience, encouragement and the foundation he needs to do well at a larger school. He loves ALL of his teachers, and I am always greated with a smile by all staff. He does very advanced work for his age and loves to show his mother and myself all the worksheets, coloring pages and art projects that he completes on a daily basis. The owner is caring and her family have nothing but the best intentions for all of the students in mind. I would highly recommend Fantastic Umbrella Factory to any parent who is interested in the best pre-school and kindergarten education for their child.

The Fantastic Umbrella Factory is not at all the place that I was promised it would be. Teacher turnover is extreamly high, my child never knew what his teacher's name was because it was someone new every day! They no longer offer other languages, they no longer have a PE teacher and the majority of their staff are not trained to be teaching young children. The move the kids from teacher to teacher so that know one really gets to know your child. You never know who to talk to about how your child's day was. They dicipline the children using negative language that lowers their self esteem. They make the kids feel like they are BAD kids! I wish that I had never chosen this school for my child, please don't make the same mistake that I did. There are plenty of other great schools in the area who will teach and love your child more than this school could ever come close to. In additon they changed the rates this year (up 10%) with only an eight day notice, yet expect parents to give a 30 day notice to take their child out of their school. In addition they ask for a donation every time you turn around. Don't let yourself be fooled by the smooth talking, I love children speech given by the principal...if she really cared she would treat her staff well and praise the children!

Avoid this school - business - owner

Dear concerned and Informed parents/teachers - you should AVOID this school at all cost. I have been monitoring this school for almost one year now. The owner (principal) family spied on children, teacher and employee every days. The owner never given break to teachers except allowing them to eat lunch in very short time.Children sent here are treated very bad, not teacher/worker but by owner's family members.

School ran like a labor camp. Young children and staffs were treated like they are in labor camp. Management don't let you monitor your kids activities. They will allow once or twice only when you insisted, because you expose their real business practice. School is unorganized. Staffs tunrover is very high because of the owner/principal and can't stand to see the way children were treat. School is always open for enrollment whle every school in this area is fulled of happy students. Do you know why? It's simple: school is the worst.

This is a disgusting school. The school run by one family. Brother and sister are playing administrative roles. They do whatever they want to do to kids. I just too happy that i don't have my kids go to that school.
You should be happy that I tell you ahead of time. I feel sorry for my friend. I support him in that. Parents work their butt up and they relied on school for good service and quality and save money to send their kids to school and then later found they mistreat their kids. I just feel sorry for my friend to give up that easy. If I am him with my attorney, the school will be sorry for what they did to kids. Kids are our future and the school of this kind you think will bring better future to our children. I don't think so!!!! so my rating for it is below 0. It can make children psychologically sick. also there seem to be discrimation involved too. Watch out and don't believes their words. Should have everything in writings to protect you and kids!!!

School is a ripped off. Management is rude & disaster. Some teachers and office manager (Cindy) seem nice, but the principal & her daughters (accounted as 2 teachers) are incompetent & rude. They made FALSE promised. Kids are NOT happy & scared when they see the principal.

They continued to accept new registrations while not having enough staffs to take care of the existing students.

They promised us upon registration/enrollment for our daughter that they know how to properly handle separation anxiety. On the orientation & registration days, we asked what they can do if the child cries & threw up, the school representative told us that they know how to handle & they do it all the time. We found out a few days later that they didn?t keep their promised. They kept sending my kid home every time she cried & threw up. I am very sure that the office manager (Cindy) was pressured by the principal to promised everything. That's probably why teachers turnover are very high.

We paid registration fee $45, 1/2 month deposit fee $185. We also has to buy class room supplies (~$50).

We decided to withdraw the enrollment after a few days, because the school didn't deliver the services it promised, punished our kid when she cried & threw up (by letting her lay on the door mat), and is incompetent (staffs: principal & her daughters) in educating kids. And school have not send us the refund and even want to charge us the penalty fee because of the withdrawal.

They must refund the fees that we paid, because they didn?t provide service they promised.

In addition to the fees we paid about, they bill us other new fees (schedule change fee, late fee, 30 days fee, check fee, and tuition fee for 2 months) of $735.

They are greedy. They ripped off our hard earn money. I wish they won't be able to swallow the money they stole from us.

I wish local TV & news stations will report their ripped off business practice, and their business will be shutdown.

First I should say that my child has done very well at this school academically and has enjoyed the activities offered there, HOWEVER, the management at this school leaves little to be desired!!! Management is beyond rude and unorganized. If a parent voices a concern about an issue it is turned back on the parent - they simply will not take responsiblity that there might be a problem at their end. Billing is extremely inconsistent and unclear! There is a high volume of teacher turn over so you never know if a teacher will be there from month to month. Management does not treat their teachers well at all, I have had personal conversations with some of the teachers who have left there and they say they would never go back!! Art projects, crafts and other specialty things my child has done have been lost repeatedly, which has been very disappointing. OVERALL: if you can stomach the management for any period of time, which admittedly is very hard to do - no doubt about it, the academic program is good.

Reading the reviews below, I can not help but think that the review in which the principal was described as loving was wriiten by the school staff. It is so evident that she is rude to children and families. The management is so unorganized that it is chaotic in the morning time when the parents drop off children. Some teachers are nice and caring but I highly doubt that they will stay with the school very long because of bad management. Not recommended at all.

Pros: Various schedules

I am an experienced early childhood educator and a parent and I wouldn't recommend this place to families with young children (under 5 years old). The children, families, and teachers are not treated with respect. The guidance (discipline) methods and the teaching methods used are inappropriate for that age group.

I have to say that this is the most enjoyable experience my children have ever had in school! The wonderful teachers made it fun and exciting for them to learn and the innovative and advanced curriculum kept them on their toes! I had nothing but pleasant interaction with the office administration and could tell that all of the staff, especially the principal, have a genuine love for the children. I could not have asked for a better school! Definitely a gem!

OK program but terrible management. Older Kid learn and enjoy the school. (Youngers one tend to be somewhat neglected.) While the teachers are good, management staff are not professional (rude and chaotic communications, billing, etc). It seems not very clear to them that students/parents are paying customers.

This is a great school. Small friendy facility,
great staff and good curriculum. There are
aspects of the independent-learning/Montessori
philosophy but also attention to group learning,
discipline and social interaction that is necessary for kids who have stayed at home until preschool age.
