A classic, old-school, very east-coast-y sandwich shop, tucked just off NE Broadway. Nothing fancy here, just big subs and bento done right.

The tickler is fantastic. I have been getting sandwiches from here for over 10 years. Although ownership has changes the product stays consistant and delcious. I have only gotten one bad order from there they quickly corrected the mistake and kept me vary satisfied. I can't wait to get one tomarow

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

I had a sandwich from the Taste Tickler about a year ago and wasn't terribly impressed. The sandwich was mostly bread, the bread was a little dry and the overall taste of the sandwich was notably lackluster. Through a series of strange circumstances I found myself at The Tickler today picking up a couple 14" Italian subs. Wow, what a turnaround! These subs had great toppings, great veggies, great meat and their bread was the closest thing I've found in Portland to the Italian bread used in the hoagie shops in Philly and the WaWa convenience stores on the east coast; a chewy outer crust and nice spongy body. For those of you that are familiar with WaWa and are looking for a place to satisfy your craving for one of their sandwiches, this is the closest you're going to get in the Portland area.

Pros: The hoagies are the real deal!

Cons: Wish it was a little cheaper

Best Sandwiches in Portland hands down. Whoever wrote the review about Taste Tickler's chicken teryaki sub being gross and soggy must have more screws loose than the crazy facist Subway Lady that works across the street. Not only is the chicken teryaki sub DELICIOUS and not soggy, all their sandwiches now come in 3 sizes if you think you can handle the 14". Best subshop ever, If you go to the Tickler you'll start waking up with cravings for their subs, that's how good they are, 5 STARS for the best sandwich place in Portland... And as for that crazy Subway Lady- she doesn't even deserve a star...

Pros: BEST SUBS IN PORTLAND

.

I tried their famous chicken teryaki sub. Yuck. The bread was tough and chewy. There was not enough meat, and the toppings were lackluster, soggy lettuce and tomatoes. The flavor of the whole thing sucked too. It was mostly like eating a chewy gross loaf of bread. Maybe their other subs are better......

Eating at the Taste Tickler is like visiting an old friend. We have been going there since the 70s...several owners back, yet it retains the same good quality and friendly service that make it a must once a week. Before there was a Subway, there was the Tickler. It's fun to see it still in the same place even though the neighborhood has gone through some major transformations. I hope they will be there 30 years from now!

Pros: ALWAYS CONSISTENT-SOMETHING TO COUNT ON!

Cons: Rather dark dining conditions in the back--new paint and artwork by locals would be great!

best bento and sandwiches in town, and nice folks also! always quick and consistent. The famous tickler and yakisoba are recommended.

I go here for lunch at least weekly, and I am never dissapointed by the food. I have tried several different sandwiches and they have all been delicious. Especially noteworthy are the "Famous Ticklers" and the BBQ Chicken Sub. If you like sub sandwiches even a little bit, you should definately give this place a try.

Pros: great food, friendly people

Cons: not much parking, busy at lunch time (a testament to the quality of the food)

.

Prices are absolutely amazing and the sandwiches are totally customizable. I love the Chicken Terriyaki sandwich, by far one of the greatest sandwiches I've ever had, and the smallest size is 7 inches! Can't go wrong paying $4.50 for a 7 inch sub!!

Pros: Great prices, great variety, amazing customer service

Cons: Close early and not open on Sundays

I had the bento and it was yummy! It's a tiny little hidden place, but it's sure good. The bento had lots of meat and salad and was definitely good for it's price. I suggest going here for a quick lunch.

We are on a quest to find a great deli style sandwich. Nothing gourmet or over the top. Just your good ol' sandwich with yummy meat and all the fixins. This little joint comes pretty close and the value can't be beat. Subs are good sized and the bread is delish. The meats and cheeses were fresh and they make hot subs as well. You can make your own 7 inch subs including three meats and three cheeses with lettuce tomato, onion, peppers for 4.50. For a dollare and a half more you can get a 14 incher. The only thing the sanwich was lacking was some avocado. The turkey and roast beef were SO much better than subway and Jared dream of. 9/10

Pros: bread, make your own, good meats

Cons: no avocado, hole in the wall

You probably wouldn't know this place had such good food because there are so many lunch cafes and restaurants in the area to choose from.
Do yourself a favor and venture into the Taste Tickler. This family-owned and operated cafe has a unique blend of hoagie sub sandwiches and Asian noodle delicacies.
I would recommend dining from either genre of food. The meals are all around $5, which is great for those on a budget but still looking to tickle their taste buds.

PROS: Great prices. Eclectic Menu.
CONS: Small seating area. Feels like you're in a basement.

I had passed by this place many times and finally decided to give it a try. What a pleasant surprise! It's a little hole-in-the-wall just off NE Broadway. The place isn't much to look at - inside or out - but it's clean, cozy and man do they make some great sandwiches! It's apparently a family operation with son in the front, taking food orders and busing tables, and dad in the back making those tasty subs. There are lots of choices on the menu and I can't wait to try them all.

Cons: low on ambience, Quiznos nearby, Subway nearer by
