We've eaten at Iron Horse twice now.

1st visit: We shared the nachos, which were delicious and possessed a unique flavor, which we loved.

There are many great things about the Iron Horse. Great cadilac ritas, great food, and great service. The staff are more like friends than just staff. The salsa is far and away the best in Portland. The Iron Horse nachos are very good as

I went there after my girlfriend had been talking it up for a few weeks. I went with a group of five we were seated as soon as we walked in. We all ordered margarita which were very good, strong and tasty. I split a house burrito and could not eat more then two bites of it. It looked and tasted like something that I would not even feed my dog. I would not recommend to anyone

I've been to Iron Horse several times in the past year or so, and have always enjoyed the food there. But on a recent lunch visit on a Saturday with a friend, it wasn't busy and the (Asian) waitress was terrible, very disorganized, scattered, and SLOW.

I ordered the Blackened Mahi-Mahi salad, and when it came it was clear the fish was overcooked, but I started in anyway. The cook (I hesitate to use the word "chef" for this meal) used a lettuce spring-mix for the base but it contained numerous ROTTEN leaves (not cooked by the heat of the fish, rotten). I sent it back and requested the same order. How stupid of me, because that's exactly what I got--another batch of rotten salad. Bonus points, at least the fish wasn't overcooked this time. I ate the fish because I didn't want to risk any ill will, but left the rotten salad behind.

My friend and I have eaten there more than once, and he even complimented the owner on one meal we had there. I hope the owner is reading this now, because his employees are going to ruin his business. Rotten salad? Slow, forgetful service?

I was so very, very disappointed, because the Iron Horse has been a favorite of mine and I've recommended it to friends for the Yucatan pork tacos, which are delicious. But this was awful, one of the worst dining experiences I've had.

My friends and I go out to restaurants all over Portland. The reason why this is our favorite, is because the margaritas are strong , and worth EVERY penny, the daily food specials are unique, food you could not find anywhere else. IE: Chipotle fajita with portabella and asparagus, or Alaskan salmon salad, or cilantro-lime chicken (this is a HALF of a chicken!). If you are a foodie, these are a MUST try.

Lets not forget to mention, that a certain Blazer frequents here, and No. 12, he's my favorite! Two big screen TV's in the front for games means I'll never miss a shot. If you're NOT in the mood, the back half is TV free and quieter.

One thing I like about the people who work there is that they are friendly and down-to-earth. Servers are cool, the owners ACTUALLY work there, and the bartenders are known for pouring a mean drink!

Out of all of the Mexican restaurants in Oregon or other states for that matter this is the Best One I've ever had!!! I know I've only tried the mahi mahi fish taco's and the Iron horse salad but I can't stop ordering that every time I go in because it's so delicious. I remember my first visit on a warm summer night with my daughter and the place was poppin. We had so much fun. That did not slow down the friendly wait staff it made them more excited and faster in my opinion. And than I had "it", the best margarita I have ever found!!! The Cadaliac......yummmy!! It was just a wonderful time and my daughter loved it too. It's in a nice neighborhood, lively and fun. They even have big screen tv's (with volume turned down) to cover those games you do not want to miss. They even let you pick your level of salsa hot med. or mild when you sit down and need a snack. The decor is great. They have black beans too. When you are getting ready to leave you won't feel ripped off it's a lot of bang for the buck shall we say. Some day I will try something other than the fish taco's and report back~~~but in the meantime you'll find me livin it up at the Iron Horse being way too excited for my mahi fish tacos and cadaliac margarita to touch the table. Have a nice day and give this place a try you won't be disappointed.

Pros: Rockin margaritas (best I've ever had) Delicious food!

Cons: Closes too early at 9:00p closed on Mondays (sad).

Iron Horse is a very friendly resaurant. It has three kinds of salsa while some of other Mexican restaurant has only one kind and its salsa is chunky and has flavor. It has traditional Mexican food and also has non-traditional one. It has many dishes with fresh vegetables and I like that about Iron Horse.
I went there with my friends on Saturday everning and I really enjoyed eating there. Our server was very freindly and attentive. We all had a very good time.

I used to really like this place. They had a unique twist on mexican food at a good price. I'm not sure what happened, but we recently went there after not having been there for several years and found that it went really downhill. First, we got there at about 3:40. Service was really slow. At 1 minute till 4:00 the server informed us that the prices increase for dinner at 4:00 and there was nothing she could do. Strike one! Then we got our food...terrible and unsatisfying. Finally the bill- over $40.00 for 2 adults and a 3 year old child- and only one alcholic beverage. We will not return.

I admit I live within the "flight path" of the fabulous aromas coming from the Iron Horse which is how I originally found it back in 1990. I love this place and the people who run it--they're friendly, accommodating and gracious. The food is always fabulous, in far larger portions than I can (or should!) eat. I check their online specials monthly to find out when my favorite dish is on the menu (Oyster Tacos!!! YUM!) Great refritos too, and I love their new black bean refries!
It's a true Sellwood hangout with authentic Sellwood vibe. I often run into my neighbors which makes it feel even more homey to me. There is nothing pretentious about the Iron Horse and I have never had a bad meal here in almost 20 years. The specials rock even if they sometimes stray from a strictly Mexican direction. I like that they experiment a bit with other "South-of-our-border" cuisines.

My husband and I have come to Iron Horse for over five years on a regular basis. This despite the very poor service from most of the servers there. The young dark haired Chips and Salsa girl, as well as a couple of the servers are the best among all of them for their attentiveness and smiles.
Last night, we finally said "no more" for the very last time. The food was bland, substandard, unappetizing for flavor.
The IH has had some renovations, which have helped to brighten the interior atmosphere. If they want to stay in business, they seriously need to renovate their staff and food!
I feel that Mark needs to be present to observe and maintain the staff and food quality. He is never there, it seems. I have called him about certain unprofessional servers, and he assured me he would look into it. Nothing has changed, though.
One last thing is that very irritating and obnoxious swinging kitchen half-door. it needs to go!

The Chicken and Beef in my was of very poor quality. The fish taco we also had was yuck. We had not been to the Iron Horse for a few years so WOW it has really gone down hill.

It used to be a great place for good margarita's and food.

I realy don't know how a person could give this place a one star. I would like to rate it at o or less. The food was not what we ordered, cold and after trying to order a beverage( four times) I finaly gave up and drank water. When the bill came I was charged with all four plus a 18% gratuity. The gratuity is mandatory but after another fifteen minutes the drinks were removed. I would never recomend this place to anyone and will be happy to tell everyone about the poor service and ever lower quality food.
Small portons, way over priced, poor service. Not a good mix.....

We always come here when we are looking for good, realtively cheap food. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. The best part is that we can be as loud as we want and no one cares!!!

I'm not sure how the last reviewer picked this place based on "mostly positive reviews". If you look at the ratings, they have 18 negative and only 7 positive. That should give anyone an idea of what you are in for. We have lived nearby for 20 years, and yes the restaurant has changed. Several years ago the prices started to rapidly climb and the food quality started to falter (not sure if the ownership changed) . Today, the appeal here is the fact they can take large groups and are kid friendly. The prices are much higher than most Mexican restaurants, in fact too high, while the food quality is average at best. The margaritas have never been very good, but are served in a large tumbler so you think you are getting allot for your money. The portion sizes are also smaller than they used to be. I have never had any issues with the service, and the food is always served very quickly. With the high prices and average food, I had to give a rating of only 2 stars,

My parents wanted to eat Mexican food for their 51st anniversary and after some research we decided on Iron Horse. I found mostly positive reviews. So, unlike most of the messages here we enjoyed our experience. The menu had a variety of options to choose from including vegetarian. I had the dungeonness Crab Enchilada and it was fantastic. They were not skimpy on the crab, there were big chunks of crab throughout the dish. The salad that came with the dish was fabulous. My dad loved his taco salad, as my mom enjoyed her tostado. The service was quick and friendly. We did dine between 5 and 6pm. There was a steady stream of customers coming in the door while we were there, but the service did not suffer. I would highly recommend this restaurant. There are many dishes on the menu I want to try like the Mahi Mahi fish tacos. We had plenty of leftovers and they tasted just as good the next day.

A real cute place inside and out and very clean. The people were very nice and we had fast service. The food was ok, compared to other mexican type food, I have had better. This is my first time to massage, but felt I needed to because the food was way over priced for the quality and presentation. I felt the food was hastily put together without thought or any love for the food. I would never go back.

my friends and i are no strangers to expensive meals in portland, in fact we are known to drop a ton of money at PF Changs like it doesnt matter. While i do LOVE the taquitos at Iron Horse and sometimes the margaritas (depending on who makes them) i refuse to pay what i pay at PF CHANGS for 6 people at iron horse for 4 people. especially when the food isnt that great, the beer is warm, and you never get your appetizers. i wont go back until the prices go back down

This bland food was way overpriced for the quality (avg. $13/ entree). It seemed as though most of the ingredients had come out of a bag or a can. Both dishes I tried lacked flavor. I couldn't finish my meal. Typically I finish my food and my partner's leftovers, too, but this was downright unappetizing. So I went home and made something myself. The one redeeming factor: I didn't get sick.

I don't know how this joint got put on the top ten list!! Come on Portland!! Where are our standards??!!
Friendly service good with kids. Bland Boring food!! Will not go back. Just okay for me. If I'm gonna spend $12-$15 per plate I expect better than this.

The food is standard American Mexican restaurant fare, with little actual Mexican influence. You can get better, more authentic food from any number of restaurants and carts today.

I guess people only want to say good things unless they have a truly bad experience, but how helpful is that?

Iron horse isn't terrible, it isn't even bad per se - but if i'm paying for anything, "not bad" isn't what i'm paying for. With so many good choices, why settle for this

Service was slow and with an attitude. Food was mediocre, on the bland side, overcooked, oily, and didn't taste fresh

Well contrary to some other reviers, I still love this place.
Every restaurant has it's up's and downs let's not be too severe.
Some of my old favorites still rock.
Try the Chicken Pesto Quesodilla and be happy!

We have been going there for years but I won't go back. The food was never fantastic but the prices were fair and it was a convenient fast meal. Iron Horse restaurant has taken a recent turn for the worse. The service is poor, the drinks are watered-down, the "pints" of beer are small, the prices just went up, and the food portions went down. On our last visit we had to listen to a vacuum cleaner for 20 minutes, our drinks were late, the food was late, and there was only 5 tables seated. The servers were running around like they had no idea what they were doing. The place is pathetic and its a real shame this has happened to a Sellwood icon. If you liked the old Iron Horse check out Mazatlan on SW Burnside.

We used to come to the Ironhorse weekly for years! When we moved to a new neighborhood, we still came back about every 6 weeks. What a change! Our last visit was awful. This place used to have the best mexican food around, but everything from the menu to the taste to the service has dived! We ordered Enchilada California, a dish I have eaten for years. The sauce was awful and they quit adding beans and rice on the side, but kept the price the same. The service was slow but beyond that, the food has lost all of it's character. We are so disappointed. A long time favorite is lost!

My wife and I typically frequent restaurants where we know that the food and service are great. For some reason, though, we made our way to Iron Horse and were pleasantly surprised by the outcome. For starters, you walk through some sort of portal when you walk in that transfers you to a truck stop that tries to serve mexican food. There were quite a few confused people there. For instance, the hostess wasn't quite sure where she was (nor was I). Then, we had three wait staff visit us and they, too, we're unsure of where they were. When we asked for more chips and salsa, we got eyes rolled at us. The food was served, which could have saved the whole experience, but, it only made it worse.

What we discovered was that it is good for our relationship to visit Iron Horse from time to time. We had great conversation because we were more focused on each other than on the food and we met some really interesting people (Iron Horse employees). Also, we felt that we were in on some sort of mystery: why were so many people there, we thought? It is still a mystery...

It is still a mystery...

wow, i thought the bland, low-quality food, weak drinks, hideous decor, indifferent waitstaff, and gusts of wind coming through the front door every time it opened were enough to wither my appaetite...

but then i watched two separate servers scooping tortilla chips into baskets to be served - with their BARE HANDS. that did it!

avoid this trainwreck of a health hazard at all costs. UGH.

Pros: none

Cons: inexcusable hygiene violation, poor service, ugly interior, bad food, and a poor value even though it's cheap!

Go down the street to San Felipe. It's WAY better. I was mad I tried this place. The food was plain and lacked spice and flavor. Not the best service either.

This place looks a little dive-y from the outside, but it's much warmer inside than it appears. They boast a number of vegan options, but they're essentially vegetarian options and you specify "no dairy." The veggie fajitas come in a tasty sauce and ample proportions, however a chunk of meat was discovered. I had the tostada salad which was pretty standard. Good guacamole. It's a loud atmosphere and large groups seemed to be well accomodated.

Pros: Tasty food, big portions

Cons: Very busy

I have given this place many chances in the hopes the food, service and atmosphere would be better. But I will not go back. It is so loud (good for loud kids) and the food was something I could plop out of a can myself at home. They need some serious upgrading.

You enter, surroundings are shabby. Watered down salsa, prices have gone up, WAY UP for the quality of the food received. We were served on a Friday night by a girl who would not look us in the face and didn't wait for our answers as to the quality of the food as she walked to the next table. Service was terrible!! Food was bland, overpriced and low quality. Our server obviously didn't want us back there, which is a shame. My partner and I are both servers and we tip very well. If you want poor quality food and terrible service, please, try it out!!

The Iron Horse is The best mexican resturant in Portland. Thier salsa is always fresh, pluse it comes in mild, med., and HOT! I have tried most of the items on the menu and found each to be excellent! Carna Asada burrito is my fave. The cadilac ritas rule.Just writing this review is making me hungry, as well as thirsty. If you have never tried I.H. you should ignore all the negative reviews and check it for yourself. Forming your own opinion is always the best way to go.

I had dinner delivered by Delivered Dish, which is an excellent service; too bad it doesn't make up for the bad food. We started with the Tortilla soup, which should be called flavored water; the broth tasted like Swanson. For a main I got the chimichanga with shredded beef, refried beans and rice. Disgusting! The beef tasted like leather, the beans were bland as was the rice. The tortilla was soggy, not crisp like it should be. It's not just because it was delivered; I've had take out from Romos on 50th and Hawthorne and their chimichangas are super crisp and flavorful, even when I reheat it the next day. The tortilla chips are not house-made, which disappointed me, and the medium salsa was so 'un'spicy, I wonder what the mild tastes like. I will not eat food from the Iron Horse again unless they seriously revamp the menu.

This is the best that I can find in the Area! Try this place out, you'll love it. Food cannot be beat. Dining area could be a bit better, but what the hell, you're in a Mexican food place...Great service.

We had tried Iron Horse a couple of years ago and it was mediocre at best. But we went a few days before Christmas and...never again! It was freezing cold in the dining room, the food was absolutely horrible - I don't care how low the prices are, it's no excuse to serve that slop to paying customers. Beware...

I generally like most restaurants, but after taking my family to this one, we are confident that we will never return. The food was pretty bad and the atmosphere was terrible. We sat near the bar and besides being noisy, the room had this mothball smell to it.

Maybe this is a restaurant that is resting on it's reputation and it's location, but if a local sees it on the "best of" list, they know it must not be up to date.

Pros: open sunday, o.k. service

Cons: not so good food, terrible atmosphere, noisy

Tuesday night kids eat free - you can't get a better deal. I found the Iron Horse to be a great place to grab a Margi - especially if Grov is behind the bar - catch a ball game and unwind. The mini-tacos are just right for bar food. If I want something different the Jerk Chicken tacos are good.

DO NOT GO. tried this place with friends the other night - we all moved here from the southwest and had been missing the delicious mexican food that's everywhere there. iron horse was such a bust. the food was awful - the rice was some terrible, dark goop - just inedible. the beans were bland, and the enchiladas were inauthentic. all this for 30% more than the stupendous, delicious traditional mexican we're used to! it was also crowded, REALLY loud, and the service was unfriendly and took a long time. the drinks were also weak. i will never go back.
