I am sad to say that I was not impressed with this restaurant. The appetizer was cold and not appetizing, and the meal was fairly bland. I had higher hopes. I will say that the atmosphere was intimate and comfortable. Haven't been back yet.

My friend and I wandered into Basta's because we were walking down the street and wanted a drink (no preconceived notions) and the sign said Happy Hour All Day (really 5pm to close, but still cool). It was exceptional. Our waitress (can't remember her name, but she had bright red hair) was HILARIOUS. I don't know the last time I had service by someone who seemed to enjoy her work so much. The cocktails were delicious, fairly strong and moderately priced ($8). Didn't taste a ton of the food, but what I did have was really good (and cheap! $4 for the little eggplant, zucchini and mozzarella rice fritter and $2 for a huge plate of yam fries). Overall, our server really made an impact and I hope to be back for more soon!

Pros: Cheap (and tasty!) happy hour, delicious drinks, fun server

Cons: None that I found!

I saw Basta's on Forkfly. They were promoting the braised wild boar with polenta and grilled radicchio for $10! I had never been there before but had to try it! It was in a great part of NW with on-site parking. It happened to be 1st Thursday so they were pretty busy, had live music. The staff was all very friendly, we were seated immediately. The food was perfect as was the atmosphere and my overall experience. I will definitely spread the word!

This is a great locals spot. I've been to a bunch of restaurants since I moved here and Bastas really has a neighborhood feel. If you can catch it you may even see the bartenders change the music from jazzy classical to Bowie before they close. It's an upscale dinning experence in the back and on the porch (only on Friday and Sat) but the lounge plays old Hepburn movies and the Happy Hour is outstanding. And try the drinks! Ask any server or bartender to match a wine by the glass or what's good and you'll never be disappointed.

Pros: happy hour, service

Cons: old burger joint building, kinda cool though

.

Good crowd frequents this restaurant. All the wine by the glass are good and there is bottled wine available, which is well priced. I would like to see the wine selection by the glass swapped out more frequently as I have gone there for months now and see the same wines over and over, which there are 4 non-house wines that are always listed.

I typically sit at the bar and depending on the bartender, the service varies. I would like to be offered a glass of water when I sit at the bar. I can get tastes of wine beforehand. The owner seems to know the wine very well, much better than the staff. I would like to see the staff be able to recommend certain wines with foods as even the Italian Garden staff can do this.

It's located in a nice spot and has it's own parking which is a huge benefit in an area where off-street parking can be very difficult to find.

There are some new additions to the happy hour menu which I have not tried. I've tried the spagetti and meatballs ($5), chicken skewers with yam fries (only $3) and the ceasar salad ($4)...the wine is typically around $9, but $2 off during happy hour.

The owner is usually at the restaurant and converses with the regulars which is nice and adds a personal touch to the restaurant.

Pros: ambiance, parking, customers, location, wine selection (all wines are good)

Cons: bar staff sometimes could be more informed and attentive to customers

The food at Bastas is prepared with care an I can honestly say that I have not ever had a bad meal there. One can pop in and have a simple item from the lounge menu or enjoy some of the more hearty meals served off the dining menu. The Cafe Bastas Cocktail is a must! The staff is polite but not in your face which makes it a good place to take a date. They know their stuff. From preparation of the dishes to wine pairings of the expansive Italian wine list. They are pros. It is no wonder this place is a NW institution.

Pros: Interesting Specials such ad shaved Beef Tongue or Duck Confit

Cons: It can get pretty crowded - get a reservation and be willing to hang out with a glass of wine while waiting

.

For many years I enjoyed the good food at Bastas. There are many items on the menu, from Pasta, Pizza, Meat and Cheese Plate, Hanger Steak etc. The recent changes to offer Happy Hour all day, which is served in the lounge only, has many added dishes. Next to the regular offered itmes there are one or two specials added on. A few month ago it was a 'house-made chicken sausage'.
The newly added items are 'macaroni and cheese', yes i know, it is a Ristorante italiano, but it is a great dish for the winter season. The added Raclette Cheese tops of the great taste.
Also, the second dish, the 'Lingua di Salmi' is a rare item to get here in Portland. The cow tongue is prepared right, served with red cabbage, presented nicely.
I really enjoy the little culinary dished offered by Bastas which are unique and available for a short time only. Keep it up, it is always a surprise what addition to find on the menu.

Great wine, great food, great staff.

This quaint italian bistro was surprisinly good.. The food was imaginative as it was good. with everything from pork tenderloins in a port & veal reduction to simple meatballs and spaghetti. All was top notch. The service was very good as well. The waitresses paid attention to every table and detail to enhance our dining experience. I would highly recommend this restaurant

If you want a nice Italian meal, in a location great for people watching after dinner on a warm summer night, this is a good choice. The food is quite good, and the wine list offers several good choices.

Avoid this place at all costs if you think it is anything like Italy; warm, friendly and relaxed, it is NOT. They take themselves very seriously and are rude and stuck up. Went there last night. We were given the option of sitting in the lounge because we didn't have a reservation, this was fine with our group of 4. The server asked us to stand and wait while she cleaned the table and then she walked off while we stood waiting for her to clean the table. Dark haired girl with dark rimmed glasses. After a few minutes two of us sat down while the other two milled around feeling like idiots. The server returns and became all huffy because we sat, removed the glasses but left the cloth on the table. Five minutes pass so I wiped the table and put the cloth on the next empty table. The server then returns and starts wiping down the table. I told her "I have already wiped it down" to which she responds " Oh really and pointed to a tiny spot on the table." Really poor form and horribly rude!! By this time one of our party had managed to organize a table in the restaurant and so while we ordered a bottle of red wine, this seemed to somehow irritate the server even more than our presence. We moved to the table after a few minutes. The service and food in the restaurant was much better, but the evening had been ruined and none of the 4 of us would ever go back.

Simple, I've always had great food at Bastas and have always had great service. I've tried almost everything on the menu including appetizers and cannot think of anything I didn't like. Recently tried the brunch and loved it.

I've been to Basta's several times over the years -- often in combination with a trip to Cinema 21, which is just two block down. I went there for dinner with my wife and 22-year old son last week, and all three of were very pleased with out dinners. In addition, when we told the waiter that we had less than an hour before our movie, he made sure that our appetizers and entrees arrived in good time without making us feel rushed.

Best dish we had was my son's "tuttomare" which included a Cioppino-like mix of seafood (including whole clams) in a red sauce, all baked in a deep dish under a pastry shell.

Me and my girlfriend decided to try this place out the other night. We ordered through delivered dish and had it delivered to us. When the food arrived an hour later we were so excited to dig in. We were shocked of the size of the $14 dinner. We both just kind of stared at it like seriously? We both ordered the same thing (thyme cream chicken over penne), and it looked like they took one normal sized order and then divided it into two child's size boxes. We decided, however, to give the grub the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it might actually be astounding. If the food was good I would not have a problem with the small quantity, but the food was worse then at the olive garden, no wait, worse than the restaurant at ikea. The pasta obviously cheap and the sauce tasted exactly, I mean the essence of garlic butter spread, the stuff that comes in a tub that tastes impossibly processed. Not to mention the chicken which was few and far between and was insanely dry. How this place charges 14 dollars for a meal that is not only smaller then something on the children's menu at the olive garden, or any other mediocre chain but undeniably less enjoyable to eat is beyond me. Oh and how could I possible forget the bread. Supposedly it was garlic bread but the observation results were none other than a random block of dry french bread and some other kind of bread that literally took about a minute to chew one bite. So yeah, please do yourself a favor and never ever go to this restaurant.

Pros: finally found a restaurant bad enough to warrant creating a citysearch account and writing a review

Cons: complete waste of a good space on a good Ave.. Horrible food, way over priced, just lame.

I went to Bastas for brunch this weekend. I've always been a big fan of their dinner menu and was delighted to hear that they were opening for brunch. Their menu is fantastic... finally something on offer instead of the usual tired Benedict or Omelette dishes you see everywhere. I had the Uova Tegamino (baked eggs) with a side of their home made chicken sausage - fantastic! My friend had the Polenta dumplings with sausage gravy. To die for. And you must try their belgian waffle. Ridiculously delicious. I'll definitely be making it a regular brunch destination.

After 15 years of serving the best Italian dinners in Portland, owner and head chef Marco Frattaroli is finally offering his fine cuisine for brunch. Open Saturday and Sunday from 10am-2pm. The menu offers unique egg dishes from several regions throughout Italy as well as a few surprise fusions thrown in. I have been patron of Basta's since its first year and I have never been disappointed.
Bonus: they play old Movies in the Lounge at night- One of my favorite places to enjoy a bottle of red wine and dinner with friends.
Hope to see you there!

Bastas has the most amazing happy hour menu I've experienced in Portland. The staff is always professional and friendly, the food is always delicious, and the $3 happy hour house wine is always superb.
I'm almost hesitant to write a review because I don't want it to get too crowded.

I hadn't been here for a few years and came back to entertain some out of town friends. I was lucky enough to share in their dishes as well. We had ordered Pollo Crocante, Bistecca di Manzo alla Griglia and Ciuppin. The crispy chicken was perfectly seasoned and cooked as was the black angus steak. The chicken outside was crispy as promised without any hint of oil and the inside was moist, tender and flavorable, very unexpected. The black angus steak was thick, tender, juicy and perfectly seared on the outside and medium rare as ordered on the inside. It was a sizable and flavorable portion of beef. This was my third Cioppino in as many restaurants in two months. The first was at The Fish Grotto. Seafood ingredients were meager and bland, while the broth was outstanding. The second was at Dan and Louis Oyster Bar. The seafood ingredients were considerably better, but the broth (while good) was not to my taste. The Ciuppin at Basta's was overall the most favorable. Seafood ingredients were of even higher quality, quantity and taste and the broth was a good compromise between the first two. This meal was a knockout winner and I won't be waiting a "few years" before returning. Cost wise it compared very well when considering portion and quality. You could pay a little less or a whole lot more at other restaurants, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better experience no matter the price. The service was likewise outstanding. Friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, but never to the point of being intrusive.

One of my favorite restaurants - service is always excellent and the menu delivers consistently pleasing and aromatic items - the chicken is to die for -- great cioppino too. The atmosphere is a touch dark and austere for my taste (particularly when some of the competition is really stepping it up a la Fenioulle (?) etc.. Highly recommend it to anyone.

Basta's has changed! Ok, it was 1996 when I last visited the place and I didn't like it. During 2004, at the urging of a local winemaker, I've had dinner at Basta's many times and I've been very happy each time. This isn't "fill your stomach with pasta" Italian cooking. Rather, the bolognese has been cooked slowly, the panna cotta is made light and rich, the sauces are very tasty and complete. The setting allows two to hear each other, but it's not a morgue. The wine list has many options and the bar provides a nice list of scotch selections. Being a cook myself, this is my new favorite location for real Italian cooking.

Pros: Peaceful dining, Great food, Good wine list

.

My friends and I would agree, we did not find much to be satisfied about our dinner at Bastas.

The food was uncommonly bad: seafood didn't seem to be too fresh as did the quail. Accompanying vegetables were clumsy. Rissoto was obviously precooked - or overcooked.

Service left a lot to be desired: we were not presented the same array of specials as other tables around us, the server spilled red wine over the table and failed to clean up or change our sets. The table, in the patio area, was uncomfortable.

So what's good? The wine list is interesting though repetitive. The bar is nice, and dining indoor can be romantic.

I went here with my girlfriend for Valentine's Day and we had a great time. I had the Pollo del Scallopine and would recommend it highly. My girlfriend had one of the other chicken dishes and she enjoyed it. This place, I must admit, is a better Italian restaurant then Ristorante Fratelli and a little cheaper. The dinner was topped off by a shared slice of chocolate mousse cake that is uncomparable. The only thing I didn't appreciate was paying $6/glass for wine and only getting the glass filled half way.

I recently had a very large B-day party here...23 people! At first I cringed about how we'd get everyone into such an intimate restaurant, but they put us in the side room with windows draped in grape vines. Our waitress (who handled us alone), did an excellent Job! All our entries arrived together, and each dish was superb! What an elegant atmosphere!

It's very cozy and warm atmosphere. Friendly service. If you like grapefruit juice and cocktail, try 'greyhound'. Good mixed drink.
Nice place for a date.

I'd opt for the many other choices for Italian; however, this place was good enough to warrant a return. We had some very good mussels in a yummy dipping sauce, some truly unique and delicious gnocchi, and some oily, sub par polenta. Don't get the mango martini; nice bar area.

Super atmosphere and solid food. We have been going since they opened and have never had a bad meal or experience. You cannot miss with this one!

Basta's has only disappointed me. I went there on advice from CitySearch and a recommendation from a close friend. What a waste. It would be better off as a Tastee-Freez.

My husband and I go to Basta's at LEAST twice a week, and we have yet to have a bad time. The servers are nice nicest people one can know, the food is always great, and the atmosphere is the best around. We bring all of our out-of-town and in-town friends and family. Basta's is one of the best places to be in Portland!

My boyfriend and I eat here maybe twice a year. Not that it is expensive but because the ambience is overwhelmingly romantic. I get giddy thinking about it. I recommend going on a weeknight. You will get a great seat. Have a steak...but do not skip the buttery, garlicky, melt-in-your-mouth mussels. One time the waiter was nice enough (the visit before last) to tell us that they were too small and he rocommended something else.

If you don't like garlic...don't come! And if you do come...you both or all must eat garlic.

Upon reading the reviews on this site, I made a reservation at Basta's. I asked the hostess on the phone if she would get a white rose for my wife, as it was our anniversary. She ran down the street to a florist and bought a beautiful long stem rose for me which was waiting on a secluded table upon our arrival. The food had tastes that tantalized every portion of our mouths. The only problem that I had was parking.

I personally loved this place. The food was excellent and the fresh breads were so good that we inquired to buy some for home. I ordered the duck in fettuccini. Very delicious. The price is average for this kind of fare and the ambience is warm and intimate.

Ok, I love this place....every item is delicious. My husband always orders the linguine with clams, and they rim the outer plate with about a gazillion clams. I get a pasta/shrimp dish, and they aren't stingy with these succulent fat little shrimps, there are literally 15 or more....who's counting, I get so full! The ambiance is nice, the parking lot a veritable luxury in NW, and the waitstaff is always very nice, helpful, and in good humor, even late at night. In the winter, the duck fettucine is simply divine....I LOVE THIS PLACE!

I've been going there for years, and I've NEVER had a bad meal, or bad service, or bad drinks. Prices are very resonable (for it's popular location) and their bread and food are wonderful! Marco, the owner, goes out of his way to see that his quests are treated respectfully and that they are promptly greeted and seated. These last two reviews must be from competitors because I've eaten almost everywhere in town and this is one the best meals and deals that can be found. Pasta dishes, Italian wines, desserts are great.
P.S. Marco...Bring back the crab cakes.

I read Portland-CitySearch's review and I was very disappointed with Basta's. Around 4 years ago, Basta's used to have great food and wonderful Caesar Salad's all at a good price. However I went this past weekend and it was way too expensive, the food was poor but the service was excellent. I will never go back despite the service. Their menu offers nothing.

A warm, cozy trattoria with a casual vibe, this Northwest Portland favorite offers an extensive menu of Italian specialties. We suggest the squash ravioli or the stick-to-your-ribs Uncle Vittorio's ragu---rigatoni with rib meat ragu.…
