Carolyn G. I recently was referred to Carly at Magnum Opus while visiting friends in Portland. My girlfriend, Jennifer, has a gift for finding the best of everything, and she did not disappoint with her recommendation of Carly. Carly

I have been going to Magnum Opus for about 10 years now and I have never once had a bad experience and the new location of this salon is even better.

The customer service is top notch, the salon is impeccable and the talent is incredible.

I made my first appointment at Magnum Opus last spring through a referral from another very satisfied client. In the space of eight months my hair has gone from light brown waist length, to a raven toned pixie cut. Armando has been with me

I had long hair about 2 years ago and it was butchered by another stylist. I paid 2 other stylists to "fix" it and just ended up with an ugly bob. I went to Jill and she just worked her magic and made it work while I started the process

I have always had trouble trusting people with my hair and "chair hop" constantly when it comes to stylists. I was soo pleased with my service at magnum opus, I will be going back again for sure! all the staff are so welcoming and the stylist was willing to take time before to answer my questions and really listen to my concerns! I am so happy with my results! if you are in search of a salon I would recommend Magnum opus to anyone!

Tiffany at Magnum Opus cuts my hair and she's great. She fixed a terrible cut I got somewhere else and didn't try to get me to cut my hair shorter.

The location is great, there is ample parking and withing walking distance of the trolley.

I am 3 months new to the Portland area. I went to the same stylist for 5 years when I lived in Eastern Oregon. She knew my likes, dislikes, color combos, skin tone, everything! It was hard for me to find a salon, let alone a stylist that I could trust. Kirsten @ Magnum Opus really took the time to understand my needs and what I wanted to accomplish, giving very much wanted suggestions for and against some of my ideas. She did an amazing job not only with the cut, but color as well! I think I found my new stylist for years to come! Job well done! I recommend Kirsten to anyone. The salon its self is very modern and trendy. Loved the whole experience! Try them out!!!

I've been going to Magnum Opus for about 10 years (just now discovered citysearch). My stylist has been TRISTAN for the last 9. I have 'difficult' hair and Tristan is the first person I've ever been to who could consistently do a decent job. She has never let me down, even when "I don't know what I want but I want something different," and she doesn't pressure me to buy product. People (even strangers) ask who does my hair. Tristan is an outstanding stylist -- I would recommend her to anyone. Oh, and for my wedding, MYRNA did my hair. It was a work of art! As for the salon itself, sophisticated in both service and decor. I feel very 'swanky' coming out of there. Fashion magazines have recommended Magnum Opus for Portland residents/visitors. I was sitting in Tristan's chair one day, reading In Style and there they were in the article I was reading. Wow, how often does that happen? Parking can be difficult most places in Portland, but in addition to street parking (metered), they also have their own lot for customers.

I have been seeing my stylist for 2 years now & really liked her talent. However, I noticed the last few cuts weren't quite on par with her earlier ones.

And when I began seeing her in 2006, it was $100 for a cut & color. The last time I went in November 2008, it was $175 for the same service. The cut part is only $35 and my hair is short now (it was cheaper when it was longer...go figure)

I think the stylists are forced to tack on all sorts of add on services....glosses, rinses, etc. that are never explained to you & then POW you get the bill at the front desk.

Imagine my horror as I pulled out my wallet thinking...great...after tip, this is going to be a $200 endeavor.

I'm sorry, I know Portland is cheaper than many large cities, but in our dire economy, isn't it better to be upfront about costs? Had I known my stylist's rates had gone up that much, I would have been more inclined to say to her "I can only afford XX amount, what can we do within that parameter?" I'd gladly skip a gloss and conditioning treatment (which don't make a difference on my hair anyway).

Pros...
The salon is very nice. The products are great & the stylists will not damage your hair.

But I just can't justify splurging like that right now for hair, especially since my cuts have only been *meh* for a while now.

Oh well! Hopefully MO will realize that its good business to post price increases somehow. I've been going there for years, its not like they don't have my contact info.

Pros: Good products, great atmosphere

Cons: Undisclosed price hikes, hidden costs, stylists stuck in a "cut rut"

I highly recommend Tristen's haircuts. She is very detail oriented, personable, and remembers your preferences. I get asked all the time who cuts my hair and even get strangers stopping me on the street wanting to know who cuts my hair! Often she is hard to get into (because she's so good) so make your appointments in advance. And she is very timely with her appointments.

I have given the Salon a few tries and have never been completely satisfied. Every time I have gone in I have always made a significant point that I do not like red tones in my hair and to this day my hair is red and I hate it! Also the three stylists I have tried have not been friendly. I would highly recommend NOT to go to this Salon.

I travel a LOT and this salon (fortunately for me) was recommended by the service person/woman at the front desk of my hotel in Portland, OR. Thank goodness I listened to her advice! This is a fabulous salon! I went to Teresa, who is one of the top stylists there (glad she wasavailable) and I will definitely be returning to her as my stylist, as long as I can (I live in the SF Bay area - but hate my current stylist in SF - too "bitchy," if you know what I mean and just not nearly as experienced and fantastic as he claims to be). So...I will be returning...great cut/highlight and overall care, as well as treatment with Kerastase products, which I absolutely LOVE..). Thanks Teresa and also thanks to all the great people at this salon - they make you feel very welcome from the moment you walk in the door. I am a very hard sell...and I would definitely recommend this salon to anyone!!!

Where do I start? I have been searching my entire adult life for a hairdresser that not only listened to what I wanted but actually did what I wanted. I found that person at Magnum Opus, Michelle Cameron. She is the epitomy of what a hairdresser should be. First of all, she took the time to actually listen to what I was looking for and when I told her about the color I wanted, she suggested a different shade that would compliment my skin tone more. Was she ever right!! And the cut? The best cut I have EVER had!! I have never been happier with a cut and color in my life! I actually cannot stop looking at myself in every thing that gives off a reflection. BRAVO to Magnum Opus for giving us Michelle Cameron. Finally, I can stop looking! Oh, and did I say that she is adorable, sweet and fun! What more could a person want?? Thank you Magnum Opus and double thank you, Michelle! (I would also like to say that the staff was exceptional!)

I've been seeing Lyndsay now for 3 years and she has done a great job on my hair every time. Lyndsay takes the time to listen to what you want and since I like to change my cut and color every time, that is great for me! I had a friend in from out of town once who at the last minute wanted to go in and get her hair done with me. I had already booked my Saturday appointment weeks in advance but Magnum Opus was able to schedule her in for a session with me so we were able to enjoy our girl time together.

I moved to Portland in January, and I have been longing for my old stylist ever since. I tried a few places in Portland that had great reviews....but I was still unsatisfied. Then one day I saw a girl with the perfect blonde hair, and when I asked her who did it, she told me Lyndsay at Magnum Opus. I have seen Lyndsay 3 times, and every time she gets better and better. She understands exactly what I am talking about, needs very little direction, and she is excellent at what she does. Plus, she is sweet and adorable, and fun to spend an hour with. Oh, and another thing...she is super fast! I have been to other places where a cut and color takes 3 hours...not Lyndsay! Usually done in under 90 minutes. I like the entire vibe at Magnum Opus: the stylists are always friendly and smiling, the front desk is efficient, and the whole place has a great feeling about it! Bottom line....Lyndsay is amazing and I will be loyal FOREVER!

When I moved to Oregon it was time for a new...everything. It is scary to find a new stylist, so I did some research to put me at ease. Apparently many people like this place, so I gave it a shot. When I made my appointment over the phone I requested a "hair genius" and was told Lindsey would be cutting my hair.
First Time: I went from shoulder length hair to something quite short. During the cut I expressed to Lindsey that I was looking Bill Gates-esque, so we had a laugh, then she corrected it. Now, I don't know how many of you have experienced "length shock" but it is overwhelming. I liked my hair cut, but it was WAY different. My legs went numb, my face started to feel warm, and I got dizzy. Lindsey sat with me for a minute until I felt better, which I thought was very nice.
Second Time: Saw Lindsey again. I wanted to try something a little different. She got the gist of what I wanted, but I wasn't entirely impressed with the results. Not sure if its my hair or the stylist. I have straight to wavy hair, and the individual strands are fairly thin, but there are a lot of them. I've never had a stylist mention that my hair is hard to work with.
Third & Final Time: Lindsey again. Explained that I was over the cut I got last time, and wanted something new. After she finished the cut I noticed the right side was longer than the left, so I pointed that out. She snipped a couple times and used the straightener. Looked fine, but the next day when I washed and styled myself I noticed AT LEAST a 1 inch difference. Its embarrassing to have uneven hair.
Summary: Lindsey is a cool person, but I don't think the cuts I've received are worth the money I've paid. The first week after the cut is good, but then they tend to grow out funny, which means more visits and more money. Maybe she just doesn't consider long term results. So, I guess this place is alright if you've got money and don't mind driving downtown a lot. As for me I'm going elsewhere.

You have the option of choosing your level of stylist depending on how much you want to pay. I chose the top $$$ assuming "you get what you pay for". I am not impressed. I have been there 8 times and am looking elsewhere. My stylist is always double-booked so that she bounces between two chairs while the student fills in with the menial work. When I'm paying over $200, I want the full attention of my stylist! I have had the misfortune of scheduling on a Saturday when they regularly run out of hot water. I have a high pain tolerance but it gave me a screaming headache. The product used is in bulk and not of the highest quality. I have never had such difficulty with dryness so I have to add a conditioning treatment ($50) just to handle their processing. Also had eyebrow wax. Mediocre and left lots of stragglers. I could have done a better job myself. I will say that is always easy to make an appointment as they seem to run people through like cattle. When it's so easy to make an appointment it makes you wonder.... I'm moving on.

Cons: Parking, value, facility, products used, always running late

Magnum Opus is quite the place; the stylists have continuing education programs on a regular basis, and it's great for creating a "new you" look, or just polishing up your current look. They really know what they're doing and they show you they care: many greet clients with warm welcomes and hugs, though they are very perceptive in addressing each client's personality.
The front desk has real bright spots- say hi to Erin, Josea, or Maren when you wander in. The stylists are extremely talented; on several occasions I have just given a vague description of what I think I want and they have come up with a greater color reality than I could have imagined. If you like down to earth, smart, creative stylists, see Ashley, Kristina, or Myrna, though it's hard to go wrong with any of the stylists there.

I had a great experience at Magnum Opus last week. My sister has been seeing Carly for the last year and recommended I visit her as my hair "looked like s@$%!"
I was nervous at first but the salon was great-I was very impressed with the atmosphere.
Carly really listened to what I was looking for and got it spot on. I love my shorter cut and my hair, usually hard to color correctly, looks fantastic. I have gotten a ton of compliments and will be back for sure.
Thanks Carly!

terrible stylists, tried a few, each time, horrible cuts, color, the same...it's a machine, no one knows what they're doing...if you are dumb enough not to listen to my advice then make SURE you ask for the most senior stylist, at least 3 years of experience, even with that, wish you luck

I had been on a search for a good stylist in Portland since moving here. I have curly hair that I wear straight and it's pretty difficult. I had a few bad experiences and was starting to lose my mind. Someone at work recommended Emily at Magnum Opus and said she was excellent. I was cautiously optomistic. To my complete delight she was the best thing that's ever happened to my hair! She is extremely talented, has a keen eye and an excellent advisor. My hair has never looked and felt better and I have an easier time styling and working with it. I couldn't recommend her more highly!

Pros: Stylist

Cons: a bit expensive

I just moved to Portland and needed to find a place to get a great cut and color. A friend recommended this place, and I read the reviews on here and got a little scared, but I went anyway. It's definitely better than what people say in the reviews. After reading the "blondes beware" posting I was a little freaked - because I'm a natural blonde and wanted some highlights. But it turned out great! I loved the color and the cut was really cute. I saw Shae and she was very nice and I'll definitely see her again. I didn't like the fact that the "students" come and help - I had one blowdry my hair. I would much rather have had the stylist I paid to see do it...plus the student needed to work on her "people skills." The parking was fine and they have appointments on Saturdays -- so that's great. It's also very open and nice looking. It was pretty spendy ( I paid $155) for a cut and color, but that's a given if you want to go somewhere nice.

Magnus Opus was recommended to me by the best salon in Washington, DC when I moved here two years ago after calling around the west coast for a top recommendation. I have never been disappointed. Right now I go to an enomous talent, Komo, who on top of completely understanding and planning the next steps for my hair, is an interesting, witty, and thoughtful person. Realize, though, I am not a wash and wear person and never will be. Rather than meeting stylists who want to change me into tres casual, I've been accepted as someone who does not want the Birkenstock Portland look that I see around me.. The staff seems to be able to accommodate to anything and lift someone's style, whatever it is. Good owners, attention to service, attention to regular clients, cheerfulness, positive client relations. Bravo and keep it going!

I went to Magnum Opus for the first time last week on the recommendation of a friend. I was nervous about trying a new salon... but I felt it was time for a change. I have to say... the experience was excellent! Upon arriving I was given a salon tour and was made to feel really comfortable by the staff. My stylist was thoughtful and very well informed. She offered great ideas for me and I never felt rushed or pressured. I left with a great cut and color... so I'll definately be back!

I heard alot about this place before I went, and I was really dissapointed. My stylist was in a bad mood and was talking to her assistant about how they havent been able to eat yet (mind you this is at 3PM!) and seemed uninterested in my hair. I didn't like the color or the fact that the stylist did'nt mix it herself. My appointment felt rushed and I didn't get good service. I also felt like the assistant was overly busy and didn't know what to do when things got even more busy! By the time I was ready to leave 3 different people had worked on my hair, and they all seemed clueless what to do with me, and passed me on to someone else. The stylist I was there to see had 2 other clients there and I had to move all my stuff and was kicked out of the chair I was brought to originally. To top it all off when I went to pay the man checking me out was very rude and seemed like he had a stick shoved somewhere unmentionable. I later found out that he was the manager! I do not think that this salon lives up to what some people say about it. Unprofessional.

Pros: really pretty salon

Cons: Unorganized, non caring, rude

I've been to Magnum Opus twice now and couldn't be happier with "my stylist" and the customer service of the reception staff. I was at first nervous, thinking it was going to be a pretentious salon "in the Pearl" but I was wrong. I'm one of those people that needs a haircut and then books to get in today or the next day. I've never found someone I feel the need to return to...but now I do. Komo...he's wonderful! Not only did he give me a cut that I can style daily, but then he styled it in a way I would never do at home (I don't like to spend a lot of time doing my hair) just to show me I have options for special occasions. Then, I had no pressure to buy the products he used, which I hate when stylists try to do with me. The reception staff was super nice, offered me coffee (Peet's), water, etc. and their magazine selection to browse while waiting was the best I've seen. The manager even stopped by to check if everything was ok after my first appointment. To top it off, it was only $40 (then again, I asked for someone less expensive). I guess you can spend up to $75 for a cut, but why do that when I can get an awesome cut with someone with great interpersonal skills (one day we chatted, but the other I was tired and he let me be silent). Boy, is that a nice change.

I had very dark brown in very great shape longer hair with sweeping bangs. I decided to go from dark brown hair to blonde. I brought in pictures of what I like and of what I don't like. My hair stylist got started. Not only did she burn my scalp and I was freaked that it burned so terribly - my hair turned orange-ish. After I freaked - she said to come back the next day and she will try to fix this. My hair looked horrible. She never mentioned it should be lightened in intervals. The next day, I came back in to correct the damage. At this point, my hair was very damaged, orange-ish and a burnt scalp. I could tell she wasn't certain what to do with me. No one came to help consult. I was amazed at how unknowledgeable she was and how she didn't ask for help. She started working on my hair again bleaching here and there. I walked out of there looking ok - or so I thought. When I got home, my bangs were melted. I had to completely cut them off giving my frankenstein bangs, my hair was breaking and severly damaged. AND I had bright urine yellow hair. I called to speak to the manager and got this guy on the phone. He was so defensive and RUDE to me. He explained that it was ALL my fault for not disclosing all the gray coverage I have used on my hair. My goodness! I did explain it to her. I only covered the gray at the front of my face and not my whole head. He was rude, unsympathetic and they would not refund my money at all. He said they guarantee the work and I should come back in. Right! I gave them two chances and spent HOURS there. I would be crazy to go back in a shop that has no concept of chemistry. It has now cost me almost $500 in products and services. Finally I found a top designer to fix my hair. He brought it back to her original process and slowly (in one sitting) corrected the coloring as much as possible. He then cut out as much damage as possible. Call Colin at Hair Architects if you want the best of the best in Portland.

Cons: Everything else - not educated enough

I went for the first time to Magnus Opus, after a long research and a couple of bad hair cut experiences, without counting all the money I have spent trying to fin someone who understands curly hair. I had an appointment with Myrna, and now I can say I will not allow anyone else to touch my super curly hair. She has a lot of experience, gave hundreds of advices for my hair, did a wonderful hair cut, and she straighten my hair. My hair looks better than ever. Thanks Myrna you really ROCK!!!

The folks at the reception desk are outstanding! It was my 1st visit - so they check you in... give you a tour of the salon and make you very comfortable. I had read all the raves about Myrna and curly hair and she lived up to each and every one. We are hair sisters (except mine is red) and she gave me the best hair cut I've had in a very long time. Myrna also did my color. I had brought in my formula from a previous salon and although Magnum uses a different brand, they worked it out and it is flawless. Aside from Myrna's skills, her personality was very genuine and sweet. I can say the same for the other folks I came in contact with as well. The color specialist (didn't catch her name) was extremely knowledgeable and converted my formula. The other stylist who shampooed me (Komo..? forgive me if I spelled it wrong) was energetic, fun to talk to, and gave a fantastic shampoo. Their prices are very reasonable, and there is plenty of parking.
I have found my new salon and stylist and couldn't be happier. I HIGHLY reccomend MAGNUM OPUS and MYRNA.

In October of 2005 I along with 6 of my bridal party got our hair done for my wedding. They did a fabulous job.
My stylist is Myrna Alcala and she's really wonderful - she's talented, friendly, and honest. She'll tell you what will and won't look good and why. She'll help you look your best based on your facial features, hair, and what you want to look like. She'll really listen to you. I got my hair cut and colored by her prior to the wedding. And I was able to have a consultation to try out the style beforehand to make sure we both knew what I wanted and liked. On my wedding day she did a fabulous job on my hair, and all of my friends said they loved their stylists as well. Everyone was really happy with their hair. The prices are high, but I looked around and prices at every good salon are high. It was worth it cause it's a lasting memory of all of us having fun together in the salon, and we all felt good about our hair. I have curly hair and she was able to curl it even more and put it in a beautiful updo with my veil and headpiece and have just a few curls hang down a little bit. I loved it! And although it's pricey, I still like to go to Myrna for hair cuts cause I know I can trust her to do a great job. With curly hair, it's important to get someone that really knows what they're doing, and she does. And she's so nice too. She does a good job on coloring too. I highly recommend this salon and in particular, Myrna.

Pros: great staff, great hair cuts, great hair color, great for wedding parties, cool location

Cons: A bit pricey but so are most salons, beware of extra services - they cost/add up

I went to see Myrna (on a recommendation) for my curly & color-treated hair. She was genuine, sincere and made great suggestions. She did a wonderful job with the cut and gave me the best color I've ever had done. The staff was friendly & helpful and the facility was open, 'industrial' but very comfortable. I highly recommend Magnum Opus and will definitely go back!

I can honestly say that I have been going to Magnum Opus for almost 10 years now. I have always liked the style and color that I have gotten there but I have to say that for the last 2 years or so I have been going to Lindsay for the worlds best cut and color! So good in fact that I drive from Olympia to Portland just to get my hair done by her. She's very creative and has a great sense of what looks good. I now go in and instead of telling her what I want I just let her tell me what she thinks will work best and I have never gotten a bad cut or color yet. She was so good infact that I had my hair from black to brown with blonde highlights without any damage. She is amazing! Although that salon is in the higher price category it's worth every penny.

I often bounce from stylist to stylist and salon to salon due my hectic schedule. By chance/luck, I was put with Myrna at Magnum Opus when I decided to chop my hair a few months ago. She is amazing. She really took the shape of my face and texture of my hair into consideration before she chopped it. She also did amazing color. I just went back for my second cut with her. She's wonderful! She doesn't chatter through the haircut, and one of the biggest bonuses is that she did the cut, color, and style in about 45 minutes.

Because my hairdresser for years moved, I needed to find a new salon. The first time I went to this salon I simply wanted a full highlight to get my roots done on my once beautiful long blonde hair. This is where the disaster began. The man that did my hair did something called a re-touch, so I was completely rootless instead of a highlight to match the rest of my hair. Furthermore, he used color on my brown roots instead of bleach to match my heavily highlighted/bleached hair!!! My roots looked like an orange disaster. He then quickly started applying bleach highlights over this orange disaster to try to cover up his mess. I was there hours AND I even paid $100!!!

Then, this woman that works there offered to help me get my hair back to the way it was. She seemed to know what she was doing, but she was never able to match the blonde from the previous application she did and now I look like I have these 3-4 inch bands of different blondes in my hair! It is so horrible!!! I am so sad! My hair is ruinedand hundereds of dollars have been waisted! I am going to see a color correction specialist ELSEWHERE this weekend. Wish me luck. I hope this review saves someone else from going through this.

Cons: Destroyed my hair and I paid for it!

Being new to Portland I heard about this salon thru an acquaintance and decided to give them a call. I left a message Saturday evening to make an appt for this week, and still haven't received a call back 3 days later. That's pretty poor customer service!

I have seen Lisa K a few times now and every time, it is perfection. I have very difficult long, straight hair and she nails the cut every time. I highly recommend going to her if you are way alanal about your straight hair. She is kind, patient and unpretentious. As far as the salon itself, don't go there if you are looking to relax. It is real noisy, has a concrete-industrial feel and the owner must be pretty cheap - the stylists have to share the flat irons, product and just about everything else except the shears. Not a big deal though if you walk out with the haircut you intended to have! Go Lisa!

Magnum Opus is the best salon in Oregon. They know what they are doing and basically have a bachelor degree in hair. All the Stylist have to complete an Apprentice program before they become a stylist on top of the beauty school. Price shouldnt be an issue when it comes to hair! I mean IT IS YOUR HAIR!!!! I drive a total of 6 to 7 hours sometimes on a Saturday just to see Jessica! That is how good Magnum Opus is when it comes to my hair! Don't even get me started on the blow drys anywhere but there!

There is no way to get a good cut or color. I tried 4 times with 4 different people and every time was dissatisfied, the streaks are uneven, blotchy, the color flat and lifeless and the cuts not what youa sk for. Will not go back!

If you have curly hair go to Myrna, she's great and very friendly. I'm from the east coast and the price is great for what you get. I've also gone to other salons in Portland that we're just as expensive that didn't cut my hair nearly as well.

I love Magnum Opus! Melody cuts my hair and she's lovely and a great hairdresser. Samantha is also great. It can be expensive to get a cut and highlights, but this is a great example of "you get what you pay for". I've gone to less pricey salons, and it showed! After reading all the reviews, I really have to say that STAFF IS GREAT, and I'm sorry if some people had a bad exprience. Also, EARLY AM APPTS!!! are great for my work schedule.
