Attention Men who need attention. Restless but no plans? Next time you feel the urge to break the pattern and monotony forget happy hour or doing the same old damn thing. Head downtown close to Chinatown for a haircut like no other.

Start your trek by heading to one of the most interesting sections of Portland: lower southwest dowtown. When you arrive at Hair M, you might immediately notice something odd-no women customers. Hmm it's a men's salon, all dudes. It looks gothic and industrial and there are flat screens everywhere. This should be interesting. The door opens and the wafting aroma of beer and peppermint just might send a shiver up your spine. It hit's brain at the same time the girl at the front podium says "Hi, are you so and so? You are here for an appointment right? Would you like a beer, we have a few on tap". Yo! Ahhh, where am I? Well yes, please, you say as you get everything off to a splendid start.

First: The receptionist was incredibly rude to me on the phone, and wouldn't let me make a reservation for myself and two friends without their cell phone numbers (which I didn't have on me), even when I was paying a 50% deposit up front.

Second: I showed up late for my appointment (my issue, no doubt) and was told they couldn't see me (my friends were both already getting shaves). I wasn't offered a later appointment or anything. They generously allowed me to shave in their bathroom right before my friends wedding.

Third: This was a blessing in disguise, as both of my friends had their necks BUTCHERED. I have never seen a worse hot-towel shave in my life. They both had razor burn in a serious way, and my friend (the groom) ended up with bloodstains all over his suit shirt collar.

If you want good service, go elsewhere.

N.B.: HairM occasionally has promotions in which they reward customers who post favorable reviews. Without passing judgment, I just want to make clear that I am not being compensated or rewarded in any way for this review.

There are already 280 reviews of this place as I write this, so I'll keep it brief. The fact is that HairM provides a really nice experience for their customers and they do so at an extraordinary price. I grew up in L.A., where you can get a facial, scalp massage, neck rub, and glass of wine with your haircut--if you pay hundreds of dollars for it. At HairM, those are standard parts of the King's Cut, which costs under $50. It's more expensive than Rudy's or Bishop's, but you get a genuinely relaxing experience that you can really look forward to.

The staff's skill is very poor, I was very very disappointed. If you want to have a decent hair cut, I don't recommend this place.

I have been to Hair M twice so far and I will be a regular customer forever! My hair stylist is the best. I also got a massage from a woman named Michelle which was the best i've ever had, not to mention she could carry on an intelligent conversation. Overall, after spending what you pay at Hair M, I always feel that I am getting exactly what I pay for. Awesome staff, awesome management, awesome location....AND FREE BEER! I love me the Drop Top!

Cons: The parking at the Beaverton location can be a bit rough due to the movie theater it is next to. The Portland location does not have this problem. Both locations are amazing though!

Having frequented HairM since its early days in 2003, it has clearly set a precedent in Portland and beyond for how to cater to men's previous unserviced and possibly even unknown needs and desires in this market. I have been going to HairM for 3 years, give or take. Jenny gives a perfect haircut. Appointments are always on time. I wouldn't consider anywhere else. And yes sitting and having a beer before the cut is a great plus.

Great haircut experience...Nice to get a cold beer on arrival and the friendly staff makes you feel welcome.
Then on to the haircut where they have skilled stylists who take their time to give you an awesome haircut, head massage all while allowing you to still catch your favorite sporting event.

I would recommend them to anyone tired of the 15 minute "chop" houses....

I've been coming to Hair M for two years now. To be honest, I'm not the metrosexual type and was content getting my haircut in dingy $10 mail only hair places. The service here is fantastic however, and I'll never go back. Ask for Adrianna...we'll maybe not, then she will be less available for my haircuts :-)

The staff at Hair M do an excellent job at providing quality service for your grooming needs. They are the best in town. I have been going to them for my hair cuts and manicures since they opened and I refuse to go anywhere else.

Hair M was recommended by a friend of mine and it turned out to be a great place. Atmosphere is excellent; comfortable and informal. After a beer or two, I was given a great haircut and a relaxing scalp massage by a really nice young lady. I highly recommend trying this place out - I'll go back again in a heartbeat.

What more can I say? The stylists are professional, friendly and excellent at what they do! I've been getting my haircut at HairM for about a year now and I can't imagine going anywhere else. The stylists are great but what I really love is their attention to detail; neck trim with a straight edge, ear trimming and eyebrows too! I've never had a stylist do that prior to going to HairM. The ambiance is wonderful and the staff always courteous.

I first tried Hair M after receiving a gift certificate. After visiting the first time for a haircut, shave and facial I have been a regular ever since. The staff goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable and and welcome. How much better can it get to have a frosty beverage and watch sports while you wait? Once you are with the stylist they have TV's as well, but the friendly conversation is much more entertaining. With everything you get for the money (haircut, shampoo, scalp massage, facial with hot towels, beer) you can't go wrong. The stylist I have been going to for the last 2 years does a great job on my hair and the other staff are equally competent from what I have observed. Visiting Hair M is always a wonderful experience.

I never gotten a massage until I started going to Hair M. The rooms are relaxing and warm. My wife made the mistake on getting me a gift card three years ago for a Hair Cut and Massage and I have never looked back on going anywhere else.

You start with a beer or a glass of wine, while you watch ESPN on a big screen tv. There are smaller tvs at each station. The stylists are young, attractive, very skilled, and extremely personable. You get a great haircut, an entertaining experience, a facial and scalp massage for $35. On the other hand, you can get poor service, a spotty haircut from a surly bloke at a handful of other barbershops in town for $20. HairM is well worth the extra money.

Having been to more than the downtown location, I find the level of service at each Hair M location to be excellent. The staff are friendly, genuine in their care of customers, and I look forward to every visit. Whether it has been a massage, manicure, or hair cut, I have enjoyed my experience completely. I've been to other salons, which were great too, but Hair M tops them all, both in service, and beverages. Seriously, having your hair cut while sipping a fine micro brew, or a good cabernet? Nothing compares.

I've been going to HairM since the downtown shop opened and then moved to the Beavertonn location where I became a VIP member...........same great service and attentive, skilled staff.
Marcia is absolutely awesome and really makes me want my hair to grow twice as fast so I would have an excuse to visit more often. Marcia is not only an outstanding Stylist...but she is also quite the wine connoisseur and conversationalist!!!
Regardless of who is at the front desk, the first question is always "Can I get you something to drink?"...now it doesn't get much better than that...except for the the cut and massage...of course!!

The only reason to vote for anyone other than HairM is if you haven't been to HairM.....Try them...You'll see!!!!!

It is a relaxed atmosphere, the staff are all very friendly and helpful, and the shop itself is comfortable, not pretentious like many nice salons. HairM was a new experience to me. My wife gave me a gift certificate and I've been going ever since. My friends have told me I look ten years younger since the various stylist grade 2 to 4 have worked on my hair. Nice experience ever time and I'll be going again soon.

I have been going to Hair M for about one and a year and always get a consistently great hair cut. In fact I get the royal treatment every time I come in.

My stylist is awesome! She knows the way I like my hair cut without my explaining it every time. I also love their Emperor's Cut as a special treat a couple of times a year. It is very relaxing and a great treat.

Up to about a year ago, I thought spending more than $15 on a haircut was a waste of time and money. Then I received a gift certificate to HairM. All it took was one visit to the Beaverton location and I was sold. The staff is fantastic, the service is impeccable. I've also become addicted to the scalp massages the come as part of the King cut.

This is the best place to get a haircut and much more! You truly feel like a king. They cater to your needs no matter if you are a long time client or you are there for your first visit. It is worth the money because its not just a haircut, its a mini vacation from your tough day at the office! Truly a fantastic experience!

My wife gave me a gift certificate for HairM as a Christmas present in 2006, and I have not gone anywhere else since. "Where every man is king" truly represents their level of customer service. The attention to detail, and the friendly attitude of the stylists and massge therapists have made me a loyal customer.

I have been a member since Day 1. Always a good hair cut, beer, atmosphere, and more. My whole family goes every 3 weeks. Good bonding time for the boys and our wives and girl friends appreciate the way we look. Lets face it, we need help, and the girls of HairM make sure we get it.

Definitely a calming relaxing atmosphere despite the beer and multiple fleat screens with sports running all the time. My favorite part is that despite not seeing the same stylist everytime most of the girls know me by name and super friendly even if I am scheduled with someone else. You get what you pay for -- quality haircut and being treated like a name not a number.

I went here when my girlfriend bought me a package last year and haven't gotten my haircut anywhere else since. I used to go for the cheapo haircut and had a bad experience. Where else do you get a great haircut witha beer and your own personal TV.

I have been a client of Hair M for over 3 years. Even though I have moved my office since then and visiting Hair M now involves a commute, I wouldn't think of going anywhere else. It would feel like cheating on great friends. My stylist for all this time, fondly known by many as "the lovely Miss Gina" is more like an old friend. The atmosphere allows me to finally relax and for 45 minutes to an hour, forget about everything that I am forced to deal with daily. I mean really, when is the last time you spent your haircut sipping on a pale ale and laughing out loud as you catch up with a good friend who also gives you a first rate haircut. It is truly a priceless experience.

If you want to relax, enjoy a cold IPA (or a couple), and watch SportsCenter all while getting a clean new cut, Hair M is a great spot! I used to just go to standard hair salons in the past but was convinced to check out Hair M for one cut and I ended up buying a year membership because I liked it so much. If you check it out, be sure to at least get the King's Cut... just the sculpt massage alone is worth it!

I was initially skeptical about Hair M as I thought it would be a place that catered more to the one time, single user than be a place where you would go on a regular basis. My actual experience has be completely contrary to my initial doubts. I have gone to Hair M on a regular basis for over a year. Hair M is a place that I look forward to going to. My experience has been consistent and outstanding each and every time. (If it wasn't I would go somewhere else.) The service is exceptional from the time you walk through the door. It is relaxing and a nice escape from the pace that exists just outside of its doors. Having a glass of beer or wine and watching a game on a flat screen television while you wait is a great beginning. The Emperor's cut where you get hot towels, a scalp and hand massages is worth the price and is wonderful way to relax beyond the haircut itself. The haircut is always consistent and very well done. Hair M is a treat I give to myself every month.

I recently tried Hair M at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton and have since gone back, since it was such a great experience. Even though I can afford to get my hair cut anywhere, I was a former customer of Great Clips (as much as I hate to admit this). Haircuts were just one of those things that I didn't like to spend my money on, whereas I'll spend the bucks on gadgets, cars, travel and great food. All that it took was one bad haircut at Great Clips and I was searching for something better.

At Hair M, you get a great shampoo with head massage, haircut, glass of wine or beer and also a hand and face massage for not too much more than what you might think. When you add up the different services that you are getting from Hair M, as compared to the typical $15 haircut (hack job) without a shampoo, it really doesn't compare. Plus you get your hair cut from a very nice, attractive woman in a comfortable environment. I'm not quite sure why I didn't try this place sooner. It's a nice relaxing escape from the work day!

So, the moral of the story is that you basically get what you pay for with a walk-in hair cut place.

Hair M gets my vote for the best place to get a man's haircut!

3+ years ago, I heard about a new men's only salon on the radio. I heard "haircut and beer", and it was a no-brainer! But once I got to experience HairM, I realized it was much more than just a haircut and a beer. It's a place to relax and get treated like a king. All of the girls are very attractive yet friendly, fun, and down to Earth. It is worth every penny to enjoy the atmosphere, relax, and get a top-notch cut!

I tried HairM to treat myself on my birthday. I had a manicure, pedicure and a Hair cut. The staff was very friendly. This was my first experience, and I enjoyed it so much I have been back. I was able to enjoy a nice wine and watch the TV in comfort. I would recommend HairM to anyone who wants to be treated like a King!

HairM is a great place to enjoy an afternoon. I mostly go for a hair styling but have also used their waxing and massage services. The staff are very professional, fun, and knowledgeable about both their services and product lines they carry.

My first back wax was done at HairM, and despite the stereotype, it was a great experience. I have never gotten a cut that I didn't like and the complimentary beer/wine is a nice treat. HairM keeps me happy and returning.

Have been going to HairM since right after it opened. Have always been treated incredibly well--the haircuts by Gina are terrific as is the scalp massage and rest of the treatment. I like that I never feel rushed but am able to turn off the cell phone and relax for a bit. It's great to be able to walk into a place and get greeted friendly and called by name. Plus, the staff works well to meet scheduling needs and make sure you come and go with a great experience.

Cons: Parking downtown can be a hassle, but the location is easy access.

I've been a guest of Hair M for about 6 months and never once have I had an experience less than perfect. I never realized a scalp massage would be such a relaxing experience. Combine that with a top notch haircut, and I am all theirs. Wait, I can have a beer, too? Fuhgettaboutit, I'm there with bells on. Over and over. I love this place!

I moved to Portland from the Midwest about 2 years ago. Before I found HairM, I went to several local salons (Salon Intrigue, Dosha, etc.) trying to find a place where I felt comfortable and who knew how to cut my hair. In most of the salons I went to, I was treated only marginally better than Great Clips because I have a Y-chromosome. (One haircut from Dosha took less than 15 minutes... and I paid $30 for it!)

HairM is entirely different. Since it is devoted to men, they know that a haircut for a man is not just a quick thing. They take their time to make sure you get the haircut that you want. They also offer great services beyond haircuts and great products. (Be sure to get "The Art of Shaving" starter kit.)

I have also referred many of my friends to HairM... and if a friend gives your name when making their first appointment, you get bonus points on their loyality points program.

Overall, I found my salon and as long as HairM is in business, I'll be a loyal client.

Pros: The Best Salon for Men in the Portland Metro area.

Cons: Sometimes street parking is hard to find, but they validate for SmartPark on 4th and Yamhill
