This is one of the best places to go for dessert. It is a small bakery/restaurant, but they have some of the most delicious desserts ever. The place can be busy, but it certainly is worth the wait. Parking is tricky.

I went for lunch. Had clam chowder, quiche (with asparagus and real crab meat) and a slice of Cake. The cake was good -- and there is a ton to choose from. The chowder and quiche were great. In fact, the quiche was like any other I've ever tasted. Wonderful light texture and lots of cheese and crab meat. It is clear that they don't hold back on ingredients.

The owner, Gerry Frank (of Mier and Frank), oversees every detail and works hard to ensure consistency and excellence. It is a straight-forward restaurant designed to appeal to a large cross-section of diners. Haute cuisine it is not, but great food it is. Worth driving to Salem from Portland for a nice Sunday breakfast.

Pros: Great food -- plain and simple.

I have never seen so many gourmet cakes! I would recommend the Konditorei ( that's how it's known to locals) to anyone with a sweet tooth. There are also lunch and dinner menus available, serving daily specials and fantastic soup. Back to the cakes-- my favorite is the Barneys black out cake as well as the champagne cake! Not in the mood for cake? they have other desserts too, like lemon bars ( fantastic) and cookies and torts! The setting makes you feel like you've stepped into a german cafe!

Pros: Gourmet desserts

Cons: slightly pricy.
