i've been a customer since the yarn garden opened, the staff that works there now are more helpful and friendly than the first ones. I used to go to the $5. help in the afternoon and the girl that helped me was very good. My job doesn,t let me get thereanymore. But its the best shop in town with the most beautiful yarns anywhere. I've gotten alot of good help over the years and enjoyed visiting when I get a chance. One thing I do really miss is getting the class schedule in the mail. Going on the website tosee the classes is impersonal its like the shop does'nt have time to remember its customers anymore.

I've been in several times looking for specific yarn/colours and getting someone to help me was very very difficult. Either the staff is behind the counter talking to each other and ignoring customers (even if asked for help) or they are joined at he hip with customers who are obvious regulars. So..if yuo know what you want & can find it on your own it's an OK store. But if you need help - forget it!

Pros: Nice selection

Cons: Staff not very helpful

I am a novice knitter, and I love to go in an browse. I usually buy some yarn, and sometimes I just have a question or two about something I am working on. I find it's best to ask the younger staffers than the older ones. Overall the best selection of yarn I have ever seen.

This is a great shop to wander around in. I've been in a couple times. I think that there are lots of people working at any given time, but no one has ever asked me if I need help finding anything or even acknowledged me. I've bought less there because of it. The other customers are generally very nice and much more helpful than the staff.

This is a top-notch shop, with an amazing selection (sometimes they get low on Addi needles, though). I couldn't find some of the yarn I'm accustomed to using, but the staff is friendly and knowledgable and can help you find substitutes. The coffee shop is a great idea and really adds to the place. My favorite shop in Portland!

I have been to several other yarn stores in Portland and none of the others come close to matching The Yarn Garden's selection. They have three rooms stocked to the ceiling with skeins of yarns of every color and fiber, from the inexpensive to luxurious fibers like cashmere.

I learned to knit at the The Yarn Garden about seven years ago and I would say that their classes are a good way to learn.

As has been mentioned before, it can be hard to find what you are looking for. I would suggest going when you have some time to browse. Unlike an earlier review, I can't say that I have ever found Yarn Garden employees to be anything other than eager to help.

I had a disappointing experience at Yarn Garden. I couldn't tell how the yarn was supposed to be organized--by brand, weight, color, material, etc--it was all quite haphazard. I encountered what I thought to be about three different staff members, none of whom even acknowledged me, so I left without making a purchase, which I had intended to do. I was also interested in taking some classes, but I doubt I will be back.

I like the yarn selection at Yarn Garden, but I can never find what I'm looking for, without asking for help. There is so much yarn there, and it's a little disorganized.
The staff there is okay. Some of them are very friendly. Some are a little preoccupied.
The sipperie next door is pretty cool. Good Coffee.
I love that yarn garden also has community-service type knitting activities. Creating woolen helmet guards for our troops, etc. That's really a nice touch.

This is my favorite yarn store in PDX. I can and do spend hours at a time wandering through the rooms touching everything. The staff is interested in what I'm knitting and can remember the project I was working on the last time I was in. They always come up with great suggestions when I want to substitute a yarn and disappear in the back returning with arm loads of yarn.

One of the reviewers wrote they were expensive. I can tell you, having visited all the LYS I consider them to be the lowest in Portland.

PROS: Open 7 days a week!
CONS: Not open at Midnight.

The Yarn Garden has an amazing inventory of yarn--I've never seen anything quite like it! Unfortunately, it can be quite expensive. Still, I'd definitely shop there for specialty yarns. Store staff were polite, although not particularly friendly. They seem to offer a good selection of classes, although I haven't been able to take one yet due to scheduling conflicts.

2 years ago I took up crochet. I took to it really fast and really enjoyed it! I recently took a day and went to shops devoted to yarn. there were only a few locally and i think I hit them all (Well all the local ones i know of) I really enjoyed this place. I found some really funky yarn that I used to make the coolest scarf out of! The people here are great and so is the selection! YOu must chek it out if youare into anything involving yarn!

Too bad everything there is way to expensive. I know the area is a hot spot but it's just string! It wouldn't be so bad if they had a bargain bin or scrap collectors for us knitters who are trying to save a little money making presents.

PROS: nice colorful yarns
CONS: makes you want to shop at wal-mart :(
