Horrible service for mediocre food.
We have no problem paying a premium for great food and service. However El Gaucho is not that place.

The service was horrible from start to finish. The hostess was rude. I asked if there was a booth

Although the steak was very good and the special treat of having the salad made right at the table was nice, the prices are over the top compared to many other fine dining places in Portland. If you've got money to burn, might as well burn

El Gaucho is one of the most awesome restaurants I've had the pleasure of dining at. It is top notch in all respects.

Both the Chateaubriand and the Bananas Foster (specifically prepared by Sherwood) have both won multiple James Beard awards, which means they are the best in the nation.

The staff is completely professional and the service is top drawer.

I have been eating here for years and I always take my out of town business associates here for dinner. It's amazing that over the years the quality of both the food and the service has been rock solid every single time.

Wow! This is a must-go Restaurant if you're in Portland. The food is maybe not the bigger portion you'll ever have but it is so tasteful that it should be enough. I tried their Filet Mignon and their Flame Skewer and the meat was perfect. The Gaucho salad is just amazing and as Siders with your meat, I would suggest the Liguini and the Broccoli. As desert, you need to try their homemade Bananas Foster! Amazing!

AMAZING! Not only is the food melt in your mouth great, the service is superb. The ceasar salad was prepared tableside and it was a real treat to watch them prepare the bananas foster while we waited. It may take a little longer than the average restaurant, but the experience is well worth the wait.

Let me start by saying this is my favorite restaurant. I eat here often and love this place. On a recent visit, I ordered two drinks, ordering them as a "sidecar". When I got the bill, the drinks were $240 a piece. Apparently, El Gaucho has a veery fancy version of this drink. I did not know about the fancy version, nor did I order it by name. The server didn't mention the price of this drink, or alert me to it's high price. Ultimately, after I complained the manager took $100 off my bill and felt that was a satisfactory gesture. I paid the bill and left. I emailed the general manager and never got a response. I will never go back to El Gaucho again!

El Gaucho is a spectacular culmination of food, service and atmosphere. Highly recommend this dining experience to anyone who appreciates the finer things in life; themselves! It can be a bit spendy but the happy hour gives you all the dining experiences mentioned above at a price any budget would appreciate.

I've been to El Gaucho many times and I'm always delighted with the experience. This last week we went with friends and tried a few things other than our normal "beef". The osso bucco was fabulous, and the ostrich was quite a nice piece of meat, very steak-like. Of course, the filet was excellent as usual. It's pricey, but well worth it for special occasions. The fruit and nut tray is always a nice end to the evening. Don't miss it!

My first experience at El Gaucho was my last. I will never eat there again. The food was extremely overpriced and the service was not that good. It seems like the restaurant caters to the rich only. I'd rather eat at the London Grill or Portland City Grill.

I have been here a few times and the food is absolutely good and has always been good!. Everything we had a few days ago was well prepared and of superb quality from the garlic bread to the sauteed spinach to everyones steaks! Nothing frou-frou, and certainly nothing super creative but just good food! The Bananas Foster were a great
way to end a very satisfying meal.

The service was attentive without being overbearing.

The only negative was the faint smell of cigar/cigarette?? smoke which everyone at our table commented on that evening.

I will go back in a heartbeat for one of the best steaks in Portland.

I was pretty disappointed with El Gaucho. The service was slow and awkward and our waiter and bus boy reeked of cigarettes. It was so dark you could not see what you were eating and it was a relief when the amplified musical group took a break so that our party could hear one another. The food came extremely slowly. We were there on a slow Sunday night and dinner took 3.5 hours. The shrimp and roqufort salad was blah and my dinner, diver scallop brochette, was cold, bland, and oversalted. The steak was not as good as it should been for the reputation. The menu is unispired and required no thought on the chefs part as you get slab of meat on a white plate and it is up to you to pick your pairings (which of the five we chose were unispired, salty, and bland). With all the good food in Portland why do people still eat here? Save your pallete and nose and go somewhere else.

Our Porterhouse steak was $65 ala carte. We split it. The steak was good but I think the price made it taste worse than it was. My wife and I split a ceaser salad and twice baked potato and they charged us extra for both. Hey, we needed to pay next months rent. Perhaps good for the business traveler on expense accounts, but for us regular "Joe's", it's way too much money for the food.

We went to El Gaucho last night for a special occasion and were truly blown away by everything. From the moment we walked in, we were treated like royalty. Many places in Portland has snobbish service and that is something I've just accepted. Not here, the hostess was friendly, the bus people were friendly, our waiter was outstanding and everyone was attentive and knowledgeable. We brought our own wine, and not only were they nice about it, but the waiter commented on how he's had it before and that it would be fab. Of course, it was. The food was amazing, the filet mignon was like butter and cooked to perfection. Every aspect of this meal was worth every penny. I cannot say enough how lovely the place was, not a bad table in the house and everyone was top notch professional, efficient and friendly. There are many places in this town where you can spend at least as much money for a meal, but at El Gaucho, we were not disappointed in any way. I have absolutely no complaints at all.

The evening began with anticipation. We arrived early and took a temporary seat in the lounge where we were treated very graciously. We were finally seated but, half an hour past our reservation time. We inquired but did not complain. Sometimes you just can't control everything. We were finally seated accompanied by a very sincere apology and we were apprised that the Manager would be with us shortly. (I really didn't want to make a fuss). Moments later the Manager came to our table presenting crab cakes (the most amazing I have ever tasted) and two flutes of Champaigne. The Manager deeply apologized and took personal responsibility to make sure we were comfortably accomodated. The rest of the evening, the dinner, the service, the lovely table-side manner and personable demeanor of the servers, was truly memorable and heart warming. We had the most amazing Fois Gras, Caesar prepared table side, and Chateaubriand presented table side. The artisan combination of subtle flavors were kaleidoscopic and deliciously memorable! I can't wait to return!
Thank you El Gaucho!

My husband took me here for a birthday dinner, trying to recapture the experience of our favorite steak restaurant in Florida. Although not the same, it was a wonderful experience - very, very old school personal service with the table side ceasar salad and flambe desserts. Our server was phenominal! She had my mouth watering with everything we ordered. Lobster mash and ostrich were PHENOM!!! Duck appetizer just melted in your mouth. The complimentary fruit and cheese plate was a treat, but had to have the creme brule - light and refreshing. Very romantic, great wine list (although pricey), ala cart for more variety, sides sized for sharing. I highly resommend this for special occasions or all around treating yourself.

We have eaten here on several occasions and the service here is perfect and everything you would expect from a restaurant charging over $300 for dinner for two. The steak and lobster has good lobster but the steak has been one tough chew toy after the next. After four bad steaks in a row, we have given up the hope of having food you could actually swallow. The salads and side dishes are good but are not as overwhelming as the prices. This restaurant is not on the same level as New York or San Francisco, only the prices are.

44-5 star ratings and 14-4 star ratings out of 83 (total ratings) very low IMO. Our visit reflected that. Nothing special just OK-good, and with as much as they charge it should be exceptional, but it wasn't. Maybe the people that rave about El Gaucho don't eat at a nice steakhouse often!? One gets just as good (or better) cut of beef at an Outback Steakhouse than what our party received at El Gaucho! Got to Morton's (or Ringside) if you want good meat, if it's ambience or a stuffy server you crave, than by all means go to El Gaucho, but don't go there for good beef.

I found the food to be average. The Caesar salad had to much dijon. The escargot was bland.
My filet was stringy. My guest's steak was dry. The creme brulee had a hard, thick crust one had to dig through. Best dish-- French onion soup. Overall, not recommended for the price. Try Morton's instead for a meal worth the price.

I go to El Gaucho about a couple of times a year. I'm from NY, so I made a point of trying out all the supposedly good steak restaurants in Portland when I first moved here several years ago. So here's my review of El Gaucho: I've never had a bad service from valet, coat check to wait staff, they've always treated me and my company incredibly well. If you sit close enough to the kitchen, you'll see the steaks being cooked over the open charcoal flame which is fun but you'll be warm :)
Now on to food... admittedly, I've had better steaks in other cities (NYC, Chicago, LA and Dallas), but if you're looking for a good steak in Portland, El Gaucho does it well. They always have about a dozen sides to choose from (quite shareable portion, btw) and if you're at a loss for what to get, you can't go wrong by asking your wait staff.
Their table side Banana Foster is quite the show, but the taste wise, it's nothing you've never had it before - so save the money and just stick with their complimentary (read: free) cheese and fruit they give you after dinner.
Final note: their valet parking = $7

There are very few things that I love better than a phenomenal meal served with a fantastic bottle of wine and great service. Every time I travel I plan my meals before anything else.

El Gaucho is hands down the best steak house I have ever been to. Their Chateaubriand is incredible, the Tuna Tartare is perfect, and the Ceasar Salad is to die for. If you live in Portland and want an absolutely incredible dining experience, you need to try it. Ignore the negative reviews knocking this place for thier speed of service...if you want fast food, go to McDonalds. Dining here is not something you rush. The timing has been impeccible on each of my visits and if you don't have a few hours to put aside for this meal, it's probably better to eat somewhere else because you probably won't enjoy it if you're trying to rush it.
The wine list is very good. I am wine lover and while I would personally have a little different selection, I think their variety is terrific. They have plenty of selections for everyone's budget and a few excellent hard to find bottles if you feel like going crazy.
As far as pricing, it is on the spendy side. There's no arguing that. But for the service, atmosphere, selection, and most of all, the incredible food, it is still a good value in my opinion if you can afford to splurge for a meal. It will not be a meal you soon forget.

(My tip, use the valet parking. It's only a few bucks more than paying for parking and trying to find a spot down there on a weekend night is tough.)

Monday night dinner with my little 8 yrs old little girl and my husband , the steak was amazing ...risotto i couldn't ask for anything more. we were treated so good my our waiter who is always always making sure that we have everything we needed. great music while dine in . and my little girl was treated so well and well served by the waiter. i think its worth it spending that much money for the entree , but i am a little disappointed with the dessert ...we ordered some fancy name dessert and it turn out to be just a banana and a vanilla ice cream with warm brown sugar. LOL....but over all great food! great atmosphere and i am absolutely recommending it to all the people out there who loves fine dining.

I attended dinner at the El Gaucho Steakhouse in Portland, OR last Saturday. I did not make a reservation as i was traveling through Portland for business, and decidedly approached El Gaucho via their lounge. The atmosphere was amiable, a flamenco guitar group played pleasantly in the corner while I enjoyed my first course of wicked shrimp, as instructed by a friend's recommendation who frequents the lounge. My entree was less than impressionable: steaks were supposedly the forefront of the show. I had ordered my entree medium rare and at the price of $48 dollars was incredibly disappointed. The highlight of my entree was mediocre for the prized execution, and presentation was equally disappointing. I would expect the highest standards for an entree presented from this establishment. I am not surprised when presented with rumors that this business purchases its '30-DAY DRY AGED BEEF VIA JOHN TARPOFF' as the supreme nomenclature, when the product itself comes from the local united grocers' sect. This is unacceptable at the least.

OK, this place is totally expensive but well worth it for a special occasion. I ventured into the unknown (for me) by ordering Ostrich and it was DELICIOUS! Very well prepared and tender. My 10 year old niece couldn't get enough of my meal and I shared in her steak which was also well prepared and wonderful. Service was excellent even though the place was fairly full.

My boyfriend loves the fairly reasonable price of the gin and tonic here and I love the creme brulee. Service is fairly friendly but not if you don't spend a lot of dough. Very dark inside, very romantic. Not a good place for kids. Be sure to dress up a little to fit in with the crisp waiters and refined crowd.

We came with a big group anhd most of us were very disappointed.
We were expecting great steaks and service and got neither.
We started with the seafood tower which just a bunch of seafood, nothing unique or special. Nice sized though.
We waited over 50 minutes for the steaks to arrive and were very disappointed for the most part.
My New York strip steak was over cooked (I requested medium rare and got a medium medium well).
Even at that the steak was dry and just average in flavor.
I tried a filet one of my friends ordered it wasn?t as bad but not that great. I tried the rib steak from another friend and it was definately on the dry side.
Having eaten in places like the Palm, Ruth Chris the Prime rib Morton and Peter Luger I think I can recognize a good steak when I eat one.
This was not it - and was definitely not worth the 60-70 dollars they charge for it.
The complimentary cheese and fruit plate was OK - cheese was good nuts were stale - why bother serving your guest stale nuts?.
For the price of this place they should do much much better both in food and in service. What a disappointment.

Pros: Good location next to hotels

Cons: Food, service, prices

I've eaten at El Gaucho a couple of times. Each time the food has been very good. The portions are very large (which is good since the price is large!). This last time we started with the Seafood Tower, which was good, not great. I've had the Caesar Salad both times and HIGHLY RECOMMEND it. They make it all fresh at the table!!! Steaks are beautiful!!! The restaurant is VERY dark inside, it's quite shocking to walk out into daylight! Service is beyond Excellent! I love this place, especially on someone else's dime!!!

My wife and I enjoyed an evening with some dear friends, El Gaucho was our steakhouse of choice. We had 7:30 reservations (we arrived on time) and were seated with less than a five minute wait. Regrettably, we were seated within 8 feet of the guitar band and had difficulty converseing due to the noise. Our sever (#10012 Garner) was polite but curt. He seemed very full of himself and his employer. [Garner, We are the customer spending $500-$700 on dinner, A few courtesy chuckles might be in order]
The food was very good, Not Great. The steak El Gaucho was perfectly cooked but tough. The lobster medallions were over cooked. The fillet was terriffic in every way. Sides were okay. I probably would look elsewhere next time we decide to go out for a highend dinner with friends. Also cigar scent wafted in regularly (not offensive to us but would be to some).
Cherries Jubilee was excellent! The fruit plate was a nice touch. great blue cheese.
It seems lik a coin toss but not worth the $$$$

We are "Gaucho Heads"! We love the staff and the great service we get there! Sherwood is the best!
We love you Sherwood! I can't think of anything we've had there that wasn't fabulous. The table-side Caesar salad is a must. We love the filet with blue cheese crumbles and the baked potato that gets "fluffed" for you at your table. The vegetables are cooked just right! The music is perfect and the restaurant wouldn't be the same without it. Then, there is the bananas famble` or the cherries jubilee
that finishes off the meal, not to mention the fruit, cheese, and nut tray that is brought to you too. Great
Spanish and Morrocan coffee too. We just love the place! We have been to all of the Gauchos....Seattle
and Tacoma and look forward to going to the new one in Bellevue when it's open. But, we still love the atmosphere of the one in Portland the best. We highly recommend El Gaucho. Thumbs up to Todd and his staff! We will always be back!

Don't go break the bank on a steak that you can get across the street without all the pretention and a better view.

Pros: Dim lighting so you don't have to be embarrased being seen eating there.

Cons: You get a better steak in a McDonalds happy meal.

I don't mind spending a lot of money for good food and good experience. But I won't be doing that at El Gaucho. I've been to the one in Seattle and it was such an amazing experience. The one in Portland is a mockery. During the appetizer stage, a waiter took a plate from my dinner companion promising that he would being a new clean plate. He never did. When the dinner began, one of us didn't have a fork to eat. The waiter took a fork from another person at the table and gave it to her. My steak was $65 and it was just a piece of meat on a plate with no sides. It was big, so I only ate half of it. I happily said yes when the waiter asked me if I wanted it boxed. I never received it. Super fancy facade with empty promises and mediocre food.

Cons: Service

Disguisted, disapointed and never again! Last night waited 45 minutes for table (we had reservations!) Then another 45 minutes for entrees to arrive. For what they charge our time is money also! Tried to talk to Todd but seems to be a big part of their problem. We have wonderful times in Seattle, too bad. When we come back to Portland will go to Morton's, or Ringside but never El Gaucho.

I wish I had read the reviews. We had reservations and specified that it was our anniversary (38 years!) We arrived on time and were told there would be a delay in seaing us. The hostess was sweet and charming as she wished us a "happy anniversary" and led us to a "high" table in the bar. We ordered our drinks and waited to be seated. More than a 1/2 hour later no one had called us so we checked with the hostess and were told that they were behind and a table was not yet available. By 8:30 p.m. they had still not seated us. Finally, we were asked if we would take a table in the bar...not exactly the quiet, romantic evening we had in mind. The food was very expensive, but also very good. Our waiter was courteous, but a bit terse. Although the culinary part of the eveing was fine, the atmosphere decided for us that it is not a restaurant we would return to, nor would we recommend it for any special occassion. The best deal is an appetizer and caesar salad in the bar! Otherwise, save you money!

My husband and I have been here two years in a row for his birthday. The service is amazing and it is the best steak in town. Best way to spend a couple hundred bucks on a meal. I just cannot come up with words sufficient to describe how good the food is - not just the main courses, but also the sides are just divine! The Caesar Salad is a must!

I have personally eaten here 6 times they are always on there game. The atmosphere is excellent as is the service and food. My favorite of the many dishes is the ribeye and have never been disappointed with this dish. The salad made table side is always good. The chocolate lava cake is great. remember with greatness comes a price this place is not cheap, nor should it be as they skimp on nothing

Whenever my college buddies and I return to Portland, we make it a ritual to dine at El Gaucho. We love it! It's worth every penny. The steak tar tar and NY strip are the best in town, not to mention they are one of the only standing cigar rooms left.

I don't what was better, the dinner or the fact that when we left El Gaucho, we ran into the chef (in uniform) at a local gentleman's club down the street. We wanted to compliment him for the wonderful dinner, but then, in his state, it was clear that he had nothing do with it. Hey, whatever works!

My girlfriend and I went to El Gaucho for a nice dinner. We had just arrived to Portland and were looking for a nice place. El Gaucho wasn't it. We spent $130 for an under cooked rack of lamb and a flaming sword or sirloin. I do like my lamb cooked medium but not rare. It was FREEZING in the middle, as if it was at one point frozen. This was after one hour of waiting. You would think that a place like this would have their act together, but they don't. Everything was bad. We ended up having to take our good to go, because for some reason it took an hour to get to us at the temperature we requested. If you decide to waste your money and eat here, make sure you check your bill. For some reason I was charged for three things that I had not ordered. BE CAREFUL it is not worth it. Find a better place to eat.

OK, so I used to be a Ringside only kind of guy. Not real fond of chains like Morton's and Ruth's Chris. Then I tried El Gaucho. Not that it's a chain, but there is another on in Seattle.
All I can say is *burp*.
This was an amazing meal. Maybe one of the best steak dinners I've ever had. The presentation is a big part of it, but that does not at all mean that they are all show and no go. Here's my recommendation for the perfect meal:
Start with the Diablo, prepared tableside. It's like a giant cauldron of Spanish Coffee (and I'm Huber's SC junkie!).
Then move on to the Caesar Salad, again tableside preperation.
For the main course, I love the Chateaubriand. But the flaming sword of tenderloin is a close second.
Finish up with Bananas Foster, again prepared tableside. I've had the Bananas Foster at Brennen's in New Orleans, where it was supposedly were "invented", and El Gaucho does it better!
They love to set things on fire here. Very cool show and excellent presentation.
And the food was amazing. The steak melts in your mouth! Ordered medium rare (truly the only way to enjoy a good steak) is warm and red through the center - perfect!
The bourbon sweet potatoes were awesome as well.
I can't think of a single negative thing about this place!
I'm still going to go to Ringside when I want an old school Portland experience, but when I'm up for a nice quality meal with some flair, it's El Gaucho all the way!

Great way to celebrate a special event or birthday! My friends surprised me for a night out on the town to celebrate the anniversary of my birth. I didn't know what to expect but had heard that El Gaucho had an amazing menu and even better atmosphere to make for a unique dinning experience. We were seated immediately by the host and our server was very complimentary, suggestive (for menu items) and attentive. We ordered several rounds of drinks and started with the escargot and then the table side Caesar salad (a definite must if one is on a date; however I?ve had better escargot). Although, we didn't order steaks and my scallops were a bit over done our sides and entrees still turned out quit flavorful. I honestly wasn't expecting the large portions we were served... perhaps next time we will be able to enjoy the cheese and fruit selection. In summary I had a wonderful time and despite the price I will definitely return because the service and ambience is more than worth the check at the end of the night. Besides I still need to try the El Gaucho steak and lobster mashed potatoes.

I'll spell it out for you: what used to be is no longer. We used to hold our business meeting here. We used to entertain our top clientele here. We used to spend A LOT of money here. That was then and this is now. Over the past few years the level of professionalism and service has declined sharply. It seems that the new crew (and most of the old ones) simply do not have that spirit of service anymore. It used feel different in Gaucho, it used to feel like a place where you wanted to be and be seen in. Now I find it tired and quite frankly played out and full of itself. What ever you used to do, you should try to recapture.
