Cool views, but too loud to carry on a conversation without shouting. The waitress had to gesture when asked about a menu item as the music was so loud. Even with a reservation we waitied for half an hour to be seated. Food was expensive

Went to Noble Rot last night for dinner. I'm only giving it 3 stars because it's not all about how good the food is--which it is--really good food. I would have given 5 stars if the wait staff can get the stick out of their a$$. With so

great views on the outdoor patio seating, but make reservations to secure the outdoor seating. Wine list is great, but expensive, the house wine was good and affordable.

The food was great! So many awesome vegetarian choices, and fresh lettuce and veggies from the roof top garden. Butternut squash panino was yummy and filling, semolina dumplings unusual but amazingly good, onion rings had nice light crisp batter. They also have fresh queezed juices which were so refreshing.

Service was good, seated right away at our reservation time, water brought out immediatly, drinks and apps came quickly, the server was right there when we needed her, but not "hovering" over us with questions.

Overall great place, with awesome views, good food and drinks, good service, sustainable garden, keep in mind it is a bit expensive and make reservations if you want guaranteed outdoor seating.

We checked out the menu before we went and nothing really jumped out at me. I figured I would find something that would work so we decided to give it a try. So glad we did. Started w/ cheese plate then on to the "salad" which could have been dinner. I tried the pork belly w/ roasted Clementine??s, asparagus and quinoa that was so good. Then tried the sandwich which was butternut squash, goat cheese and sauted onions. Wow good but I was full from the salad. Had to try desert of course. It was a pear and ginger cake w/ butterscotch frosting and brown sugar spiced ice cream. Wow great. We all tasted each other??s meal and all of them were fantastic. I do recommend this place. Make reservations or go very early. Service was nice, but a bit slow. Our waitress was fun though. .

Interesting location, great wine, maybe a little overpriced. Great for a date. Parking can be a little hard. Worth a try.

We like to stop here for happy hour during the sunset as they have a high location and you can see the whole West hills. Nice happy hour menu and great wine flights.

We found it impossible to hear or carry on a converstion with the music so loud. The friends I took - hoping to have a great time - all looked assaulted after about 5 minutes of the noise. Our order was messed up, the service was slow, and we found it a total waste of time and certainly not worth the expense. In the future, we'll take advantage of Portland's other great restaurants and leave this one off our list. Sad, but not worth going back.

Went here the other night. It's a cozy cute place however the chairs are so uncomfortable and our waitress was slow. Took her 15 min before our drink order was taken. The food was so so but nothing great plus it was way overpriced. Wish we would have just stuck to the wine. Our tab was $200 and we left a 25% tip and the waitress acted like it wasn't enough. She was so rude to us as we were walking out. If looks could kill!!!! Wahtever!

SO disappointing! We have been to NR twice before with enjoyable experiences, but something has happened. We took out of town friends there for dinner last night and it was a disaster. Quick to seat us, but very slow to bring cocktails. After ordering dinner and then waiting for 45 minutes, our server returned to tell us they were all out of the pork shoulder that 3 of us had ordered. Would have been a great photo of all of us with our jaws on the table. Why didn't she let us know right after we ordered? We figured out it was because she didn't enter the orders until 45 minutes after she took them. We had to order anew and then wait another half hour for that salmon order to arrive which was quite small. We left hungry and tired and DONE with that restaurant. Too many fabulous choices in Portland to waste our time there.

IF only this place lived up to it's view!! To start, we asked to wait for an outdoor table and then proceeded to the bar. After a bit of a wait to just be greeted (two slow bartenders, wasn't that busy) we ordered our drinks, and then it took a bit of time again to get them, I'd say the whole process took about 15 minutes, which seemed kinda silly. After about 25 minutes we were feeling a bit hungry and wanted to order some appetizers, so I ask the host when he thought a table might open outside. He told me he "had no clue" or to that effect. I asked if there were any checks down, he said he didn't know, and he certainly didn't seem interested in helping us figure out any sort of potential timeline. We then told him that we were considering getting started with some food, and he didn't look very pleased. He then told us, disgruntled, that if we ordered our entrees that we would HAVE to stay at the bar!
So, we ordered our apps, host finally came to seat us, we were not allowed to transfer our ticket, so our food got COLD while we waited for the very slow bartender settle our check. OH, and we were not allowed to go to our table until the check was settled, maybe that host could have followed us with it? OH, and the bartender gave us some grief as well about moving after we had ordered--WHAT?
Host also told us that "you go ahead and grab everything and I will follow you with what's left" This meant our water, menus, drinks, napkins and food. Nice. I didn't realize I was eating in a cafeteria, I certainly wasn't paying cafeteria prices!
Once outside, we waited at least 10 minutes before anyone came to talk to us. I got the feeling we were being punished for ordering our apps inside? We had a cheeseplate with NO bread or any other way to eat it, and our onion rings were now cold. And NO ONE was coming to check on us, we still wanted to order our entrees.
THe entire process was terribly slow, for no great reason. I do think the kitchen was backed up, which I can forgive, but the rest was just poor and incompetent service.
The host person absolutely needs to get schooled in customer service. This crew needs to remember, they are in the hospitality business, not the "we are too cool for school and can do whatever we want" and expect people to come back. Let's remember it's about the guests overall experience.
I really hope that they get it together so that the service and the food live up to the view!

I have been a business traveler for 23 years and have never come close to wanting to write truly bad review...but my time has come, and I wish I could figure out how to get away with giving no star at all. I came into NobleRot on a Friday night at 4:30pm at sat at the bar with a friend from town. After sitting for 20 minutes, I looked at my watch and commented to my friend that I was astonished that there were three bartenders and not one of them had yet offered to serve us. Believe it or not, I was a bit embarrassed that one of the Bartenders overheard me and said "oh this third guy doesn't count, he's just a bus boy, just two of us"...at this stage we each got a glass of wine, a menu and ordered the cheese plate...45 minutes later, we had yet to be offered another glass of wine and were still waiting for our cheese plate, and NO ONE, NOT ONCE asked us how we were doing (mind you, we can't be missed, we're sitting at the damn BAR!!!). I finally wave the Bartender down that gave us the wine and said "look, can we just have our check, and cancel the cheese plate?" he proceeds to give me a small lecture "well he says, we are a bit busy, and even though you are at the bar and only ordered an apetizer, the orders go to the kitchen in order, and yours is ready"...I ask him to check anyway...he comes back a few minutes later and tells bashfully that the order hasn't even gone in yet...so I ask again, "may I have my check?"...the check comes...I put in my credit card and sit for another 15 minutes before I have to wave down a passing waitress to get her to take it away...
Sorry, never, never again...you folks are not a start-up from what I understand, so it's not like you have no experience at this...and it only takes 3 seconds to say "how are you doing, just hang in, we'll be right with you"....I've been to cowboy bars with one bartender and one server that would outdo you guys...sorry, can't comment on the food...I ended up at Wine Down on NW 28th...WOW!!!

Pros: View, trendy atmosphere

Cons: Service, noisy

It's a new location at the "old Rocket", on top of a great building on E. Burnside. It's definitely lost some of the "neighborhood" vibe from the old location and is now a more trendy yet still comfortable wine bar. It is VERY different from the old location. If you liked the cozy, low key environment from the old place, the new busy trendy vibe from the new NR may not be your thing. It seems that it's no longer a "neighborhood wine bar" but a "downtown wine bar". There's still the same staff and same menu, which kept a continuity, but there is definitely some growing pains with the added staff getting used to the new kitchen. I'm excited to experience it in the summer with the view. The wine list is great, the prices are fantastic, the food....could have been better, could have been worse. Our party (5) enjoyed a lot of the menu. Our favorites: The cheese plate (great variety and the most fantastic triple creme that I've ever had) and the onion tart (classic and the perfect size). The butternut squash panino was savory and sweet, the clam (tomato based) linguini was simple, very well executed but could have had a bit more "clammy" taste (how often does one say that??). The major disappointment was the "roasted pork salad". I think it was more of a matter of execution (chopped pork vs. sliced, mixed with chopped salad and too many crutons) rather than taste. The pork tasted good (when I could find it) and the fried capers were wonderful (when I could find them and taste them seperately). But the whole thing mixed together.....disappointing. Our server was busy, but friendly and capable. We did have to wait quite a while for food service, but we knew it was the first night of the new space, so we didn't mind. Overall, it's a larger space, more noise, more time to wait, but still a good value for the venue and definitely good wine!!

Wonderful place but be ready to wait, no the biggest spot in PDX. The wind choice is good, pricing moderater and a great chance to sample good wines and food. the cheeze sampler was delightful.

Noble Rot was one of the first wine bars in Portland and is still on of the best. The food - both small plates and full size meals are great and the staff knows exactly what wine to pair with your meal. Make sure to do a wine flight that will go with what your are eating. It is a great way to see how different wines comlement a meal

Man what a disappointment! This place used to be pretty good. I went there about a month ago, and it was really bad. The food wasn't cooked well, service was bad, but I thought it was just an off night. Went back again yesterday, and it was just as bad, if not worse. Our food was okay at best. Really small portions and horrible service. Even the wine selection didn't seem as good as in the past. Is it under new management?? I will not be going back any time soon.

Went here when the line at Ken's pizza was too long, what a mistake. The food was bad, unbelievably small portions (the cheese plate was a joke!), and waaaaay too expensive for what you get. I can't believe how much I paid for a BAD panini served with Ruffles. I mean, potato chips, fine, but Ruffles are the most disgusting, flavorless chips out there. Service was bad, and it took forever to get our bad food. In the end we would have eaten at Ken's by the time we were done (by the way Ken's is GREAT!). I also find it strange that I know of several friends who have had bad experiences here, wrote bad reviews on this site, which then were removed within weeks of being posted. Makes me think that all the good reviews are not really representative.

Inattentive service (I think the server had more tables than she could handle) and laughably tiny portions. I had lamb here last year that was $15, and contained no more than two ounces of lamb total. Come on!

We had such an amazing dinner here. The spot itself is mellow and cozy, and the service is really wonderful. I had heard so many things about the onion tart that we had to sample it. It was delicious, however, we liked everything else even more! We tried a few of the specials, a pork terrine(perfect) and the most amazing dish with fresh morels and a fritatta. So sublime! We also had the seared salmon on the menu which was cooked to perfection, and the famous macaroni and cheese. That mac and cheese was by far the best I have ever eaten. We also had the creme brulee and a fabulous rhubarb crisp. Our server was wonderful and helped us to choose a really delicious Chenin Blanc. We LOVED this dinner, and we will certainly be back again and again.

I left Portland for Atlanta in July 2006... and I am still ranting and raving about the onion tart. I am even sending people from Atlanta who are visiting Portland to this place. What can I say? Can we bring this place to Atlanta? Once in awhile? Please? :-)

Pros: The onion tart, the onion tart, wine, the onion tart.

Cons: Parking, but it's certainly not their fault...

Of course you should go here for the wines, but the food is amayzing as well. The onion tart is addictive and the deserts are always on the mark. I adore this place.

My husband & I checked out 3 new-to-us places Tuesday night. Noble (this web site won't allow me to use the full restaurant title???) was our second stop of the evening. We sat at the bar because the front tables were full and it turned out to be a wonderful choice. One of the cooks likes to prepare various food items at the front counter and is a bit of a showman so that was a lot of fun. I ordered a 'house' red wine which was quite wonderful (like the house wines in Italy) & my husband had a beer that he enjoyed. For snacks, I ordered the baked pear filled with brie and surrounded by arugula and candied walnuts. This appetizer was good enough to be a dessert. Two of the waitresses walked by exclaiming that they love the baked pear dish so it's a favorite with the staff, as well. My husband ordered comfort food; mac & cheese. Their recipe can be found on their website which I printed this morning. A heavenly mac & cheese with a crust of bread crumbs & parmesan cheese broiled on top. Noble Rot's interior looks and feels like a wine cellar and, as noted in other reviews, would be a great place to take out-of-towners. Definitely a new favorite for us.

Pros: atmosphere, service, food

.

My girlfriend and I had an excellent meal, great wine, and very attentive, friendly service. We hadn't been there for quite awhile, and are happy that things are still very good. Food prices are reasonable, wine prices are very good value (as for the "corkage fee" that annoyed another reviewer - the place sells their wine retail as well, and of course they need to charge more if you are dining in - but their mark-up is still less than most places), and I've never had bad service. The big added plus in my opinion is the music - when we sat down last night they were playing Fela Kuti, and I have been there in the past when they played an entire early Clash CD. Overall, a very nice dining spot that won't break the bank.

Pros: Good wine at good prices

Cons: Hard to get in at times

I love this place - it could be my favorite restaurant in Portland. The ambiance is so warm and inviting, the service is professional but relaxed, and the food is unsurpassed. The servers are very knowledgable about the wine selections and the flights are fantastic! The cheese plate is incredible. In fact, everything I've tried here has been incredible. We always bring out-of-town guests here to show them a prime example of Portland's culinary excellence! You couldn't ask for more.

This time in late March, I ordered the house Pinot Noir that was nice and complimented my selection of cheese and Marche salad done with large shrimp and avocado. Awesome! Later for a hot dish I had the cod that was surrounded by hazlenuts and yellow raisins. Superb! Much like the last time when I turned a variety of small plates into a meal that began with a hot appetizer and the NR salad, followed by the pork shoulder cooked so soft I could cut it with a fork. Add a superb scallop dish cooked with tomato, bread throughout, and more good wine...

Pros: Excellent food cooked to perfection!

Cons: Casual decor, however, it is a wine bar isn't it?

Last week I visited Noble Rot for the first time and it definitely won't be my last! I had an incredible meal - comprised of simple comfort food done to perfection... I started with a lovely glass of Syrah, followed by a simple butter lettuce salad tossed in a vinegarette with red onion & pine nuts. Next I had their Mac & Cheese which justifiably is ranked as one of the best in town. For dessert I had a mini-muffin sized brownie that was baked to perfection - just this side of gooey with a dollop of fresh mint whipped cream. It was amazing! I highly recommend that you check out Noble Rot - I'll definitley be taking all my friends there!

When I moved here I looked forward to going to Noble Rot. In the past several months I've been several times with friends and have enjoyed myself each time. Now, having moved nearby its only a walk away.

I'm a little puzzled by some of the reviews here as they seem to have confused Noble Rot with a full service restaurant. I've always considered it to be a winebar which also happens to have great food. Perhaps that's the misunderstanding. I have no experience with their corkage fees.

I've enjoyed almost all the wine flights I've sampled, and, have found the selection to be a great introduction to various wines, and regions. I have found the prices good.

The food. Hmmm, well, the onion tart is outstanding. The several specials I've had from a "black on black" (fish, truffle, etc) to lamb to various desserts have been terrific.

12/27/05 This did not turn out to be the experience I had long awaited. I ordered a bottle of wine and they were out of what I ordered (this is not the problem--it happens). Instead of bringing me the wine list, she presented me with two bottles that she had picked out to replace my choice. Both of these were $10 more than what I had selected. Then she tells me that there is a $7 corkage fee because they also retail wine! An in-house corkage fee? I'm sorry, I totally agree that if someone brings their own wine they should be charged a corkage. But please, Noble Rot, we were buying YOUR WINE! Unfortunately the food did not improve the situation. The portions are tiny. I finished my "meal" and was still quite hungry. My husband had risotto, and it was quite soupy. Overall, the food didn't wow me.

Having read the great reviews on Noble Rot in Gourmet and other publications, my girlfriend and I were thrilled to be able to visit it during a trip to Portland last week. After going there, all I can say is what's the fuss? This place is mediocre at best. The service was horrible - the hostess had real attitude when we asked for a table, saying "Don't you know? Put your name on our waiting list!" Once we got our table, it took 15 minutes for a waiter to show up. I asked for a wine list, and was told "Oh, its pretty out of date. Go look at whats on the walls (the wines are stored on shelves around the restaurant) and see if you like anything". Huh? The food was spotty - cheese great, entrees fair. With all the great places in Portland, don't waste your time here.

Pros: Atmosphere, Food

Cons: Service, Parking

This place is still putting out tasty, fresh food. I still like it here, don't get me wrong.
But I have to wonder--where did all the servers go? It seems like every time my wife and I come in, there is someone new waiting on us, which is not the case in other places that we enjoy dining. We don't expect to be known by name, but honestly the atmosphere has definitely gone downhill. We used to be greeted by extremely friendly, smiling faces and now it is just not as much fun.

If you walk in "cold," Noble Rot may be a bit disorienting without a good wait-person explanation. (My table didn't get one.) The key to comprehension is that your experience is oriented around ordering "flights" of wine (three two-ounce glasses of wine with a common theme.) The food on the menu is poorly organized; the onion tart is lumped in with entree items, for example. Ask for full explanations of the food items as well; this evening's special of "cured pork, mozzarella, zucchini, and salad" was semi-misleading. If, by "cured pork" one means prosciutto, then by all means, call it PROSCIUTTO! Okay, I'm over it. Go for the wine, and as long as you don't have an appetite, the food as well.

i'd been wanting to try noble rot for awhile now and only recently finally made it in. i am so glad i did! the food was really wonderful: the onion tart was to die for, the salad was delicious, and the pork shoulder that i got was so tender, no knife was needed. when we went, the upstairs was having a private party so the downstairs was quite small; the back room especially, is pretty intimate and makes for a romantic setting for a date. i definitely can not wait to go back.

At first glance I felt cold in the back room dining area; in fact I wanted to paint the cinderblocks a warm burnt red! But after ten minutes or so I settled into my sampling of French wines, warmed by the spicy deep tones and enjoyed the wonderful art.

I wasn't expecting such fantastic food. Truely, the menu is excellent. The perfect balance of flavor and substance.

I will definitely return here.
It far exceeded my expectations!!!

Noble Rot is a work of art in and of itself.
It's a 20 on a scale of 1-10.

I have eaten at the best restaurants around the world. Now that we have retired to Portland, I am so happy I don't have to give up good food - I have Noble Rot! The meat dishes are amazing - try the pork! I also recommend the brown butter cake. The local wines elevate great food to an amazing experience. This is the place I take all my out of town, well-traveled guests, they leave wanting to move to Portland...

Can't say much about the food, but who cares. This is the place to go when you want to drink wine. Good selection, but a little top-heavy on the domestic stuff. Great staff that knows their product, and I appreciate that it is on the east side. I'm hesitant to comment on a place that was "restaurant of the year," but consider this purely a "best wine bar" review. The flights are thoughtful and educational, making it a great place to teach yourself something new.

We found the food to be a little better than average and may be worth the price. The wine flights were by far the best deal and you could be pleasantly surprised.
The service was ok. Nice enough folks, but didn't check on our needs quite enough. What really disappointed us was that we were asked to leave to make room for others. We paid $200 for 4 people and we enjoying ourselves in conversation; asked 3 times for more coffee that never came and may have had another glass or two of wine.
Just thought it was attrocious to ask- even if she did it nicely. They lost our future business.

We had a choice of a table or sitting at the bar and we chose the bar. An excellent choice. Not only did we get samples of cheese and meats, we also got the low-down from the chef/owner on some of his favorite hot spots in town.

The food was good, especially the onion tart. The house wine is only $4.00, but I found the pours to be rather small.

Great place for a date or a small bite to eat. Will become one of our favorite places.

The flights are hit or miss although some can be fabulous. The wines by the glass categorized by varietal are a great value. The food has been consistently good. The servers are helpful and not snooty. We remarked that one glass of wine was a bit corked and they took it to the owner who agreed. Other places you have to explain what the term "corked" even means. Its a great place to try different wines and several small dishes without going broke.

emblamatic of the best of the southeast pdx vibe: casual, professional, tasty, friendly. i stayed away at first, expecting a weedy extension of the pearl into our turf, and happily found a place i think of as 'dots for adults.' good food, flights, cozy booths, fresh air.

This new wine bar in SE Portland is exactly what the neighborhood needs. Although it's quite a lot more than a place to go sup the aged nectar. The food is out of this world, the staff is knowledgable and super friendly.

The flights are the best. The Noble Rot has a great staff, too, and is nice and quiet for friendly discussions. The white bean puree soup was delcious and so delicate, with a sweet, fragile drizzle of lemon oil. The sauteed shrimp were a little bland-- nowhere near as good. Try the Cotes du Rhone flight. It is strange that they don't sell the wines that are on the menu by the glass, but that won't discourage me from making it a new favorite spot.
