Simple. This shop ripped me off. I hope and pray that the state shuts them down. 40 years in business? How many people like myself did they screw over I wonder?

They ripped me off. Overcharged me for parts that were not needed. Didn't fix the actual problems and now my car actually runs worse!

It's refreshing to find an automotive repair location we can trust. They are very professional and helped ease the worry of what was wrong with our vehicle. There's a reason why Steve's Automotive has been in business for over 40 years and

Although the actual mechanics are likely very skilled, the staff which assits you speak kindly on the phone but will take immediate offense if at any point you disagree with them. You will speak with one man whose sole purpose is to run the front desk, likely not having the same certfication as the mechanics, and is there only to sell you more services. Expect to hear Lines such as "not our problem" and " I'm sorry you feel that way." basically avoiding any personal responsibility for the lack of customer service. The repairs are fine, but at dealership prices why should I bring my car back to a shop which chooses to speak to me in a condescend manner and refuses to take any personal responsibility and rather place

blame on the customer.

I am very grateful to Bob, and the amazing technician Mike, who fixed my fuel pump. Here's how it went.
**1. Frustrating experience with other mechanic.
**2. Called SA for an estimate. SA was friendly, sympathetic, and straightforward.
**3. Towed car to SA- arrived late. SA still took us in, still cheerful, honest.
**4. Called SA 47 times the next day to confirm quoted price, check on car, etc. Very professional on the phone, very patient, and honest with labor/parts pricing.
**5. Picked car up within 24 hours of dropping it off. Staff acknowledged me by name, explained all repairs, did NOT charge me for extra labor because it had not been part of the agreed-upon price.
**6. Drove car home. I was so impressed with SA that I went straight to my computer to write my first-ever online review.
I really will go back to SA when the next thing breaks on my car. My experience was positive, and I will recommend this business to anyone who values integrity (seemingly scarce among other mechanics).

I have taken my car to many different places in Portland to be serviced and have always felt like I was being scammed or taken advantage of because I am a female that does not know very much about cars. However, I took my car to Steve's automotive and felt as though they actually cared about my car and my safety. I would recommend this business to anyone looking for honest, hard working, and caring people to fix your car.

I brought my Car in for an oil change and received the top-notch service that I have come to expect from Steve's Automotive. They alerted me that my battery was running low on voltage. I had forgotten that a few weeks before I had run my battery down and meant to have it checked. I didn't have the time then, but I came back the next day and they had my very unique and specialized battery delivered for me to have installed. They don't carry my cars battery at any battery shop, but these guys went out of their way to have one delivered for me. Bob and Steve are very conscientious operators and always put their customers first. It may not always be the news you want to hear, but they surely do not go looking for bad news. These type of businesses are hard to find: Trustworthy, friendly and fair!

I took my teenage son's old ford truck to a local Ford dealership that kept the truck for over a week promising to fix it. After many conversations and much frustration, I had the truck towed to Steve's Automotive. They quickly identified the repair needs which were at a lower cost than the Ford dealership quoted and repaired the truck within several days, a much more reasonable amount of time to wait for repairs. I now take all our vehicles to Steve's Automotive for regular maintenance, tires and any other auto repair needs we have. Steve's Automotive treats us like family and they really care about our safety on the road.

Hello fellow car consumers,

I've taken my car to Steve's Automotive for a few repairs. I took my car there based on a Willamette Week rating--it was very positive. Steve's Automotive does good work, but their pricing is very high!

I want to have a long history with an automotive shop. Now, I'm going to take my car to PDX Portland. Their pricing is competitive and I have a friend that has taken her car there for several years. Her experiences have been very positive.

I had my car looked at for a second opinion. Bob and Steve family owned business treat you as family. They will give an honest advice. If you live in that area. Have them change your oil and give you some counsel for your car. Leave it with them and shop the Pearl for a day.

I called on the phone to get a quote on a new oil pan from this place. They refused to quote the price of the part or the labor, saying "just bring it in and then we'll talk". Every other place I talked to was very up front about the price of parts and labor. I'd say "1994 Honda Accord EX - Oil Pan" and they would respond "$147.53 and 1.8 hours labor @ $45 / hr". Not this place. Clearly, they are hiding something. They want the naive customers they can fleece, and the savvy customers they willingly throw away to shop elsewhere.

Buyer beware.

At last, an automotive repair facility that actually exudes trust! I took my car to Steve's for a variety of age-related issues. They thoroughly tested all systems and quickly quoted me on the total amount.

We were able to work out favorable terms regarding the amount of time and how payment would work.

Most importantly, my tired automobile virtually purred all the way home and it has been humming a happy tune ever since. I will continue to take my vehicle to Steve's Automotive, where driver care is as important as auto care.

I've taken my cars to Steve for about five years and his shop provided excellent service until about a year ago, when his service manager left and Steve hired his son - who has practically no automotive experience - instead. There has also been a high turnover of mechanics and there are now only two mechanics on duty. As a result, repairs take a VERY long time, sometimes for several weeks. Steve is an amiable old guy and tries to provide good customer service, but he doesn't seem as invested in his shop as I can recall. For example, he'll forget to perform services that I had requested (even typing out my service requests doesn't help) or he'll promise that a particular repair will solve the problem, only for me to find out that it didn't and I'm left shelling out additional money, sometimes a LOT more money. Then, there is just general sloppiness, like the time his mechanics failed to notice that the tires on my car had not been balanced - I had taken the car in for wandering at highway speeds - even though you'd think that this would be one of the first things they'd check (to Steve's credit, once he noticed it, he balanced the tires free of charge). Proper diagnosis seems to be where the shop is falling short these days, and I think that's a largely of function of lax supervision of the mechanics. A good service manager should always be monitoring work to see that it is being performed according to high standards, but Steve is doing less and less of that and his son doesn't have the proper training to do it. I also find that I need to phone Steve more often to keep track of the repair progress whereas in the past, he used to be very prompt in keeping me up to speed. The net result is that service is not what it used to be and I've been feeling more and more that my business is being taken for granted. It's difficult to find a good repair shop in downtown since there are so few, but I've decided to try another repair shop next time around.

Pros: one of the few downtown repair shops; Steve is a nice guy who tries but is getting old.

Cons: mechanics aren't sufficiently supervised, inadequate staffing, long wait times
