What more could you ask for? It's not the biggest place in the world and it's a little cramped/crowded, but that's what I expect from a bookstore that's been around for a while (apparently going on 30 years). I had a nice talk with the son of the owner behind the counter and it's just the two of them running the place. It's not open all the time and could be a little more orderly but no bibliophile should leave this stone unturned.

Hi Niles and Jon,
I got the journal I ordered today (5/11/09) and it was in fine shape and well packaged. I prefer not to have the price markings on the inside but that's OK as it's erasable. If you had a rating system, I would be more than delighted to give all 5's/5 for promptness(2 days from Portland to South Florida!), neat packaging, good shape, etc.Hope to visit your store in person someday.

Thank you,

William Keller,Ed.D.

This is a real gem of a bookstore. Its not your typical bookstore. Organized but old feeling. Like there might be some famous old authors hidden in the bookshelves. It is just worth the experience to stop in.

This is the kind of bookstore for people who are tired of corporate businesses and who like a little character to go along with their shopping experiences. It's a medium sized used and rare bookstore, and the decor is almost as interesting as the rest of the place. They also have a great selection of books on Oregon, I saw some interesting first editions, sheet music and apparently a basement full of rare/collectible magazines. I've had good experiences with the guys behind the counter and they seem pretty friendly and personable, so I wouldn't agree with the previous review, but they seem to like to do things their way, so maybe that can rub people the wrong way.

It's true that this store has a good selection especially for hard to find books however, the guy behind the counter both times that I have been in is pretty rude. I wasn't too impressed by their prices, either. However, if you are looking for something specific and Powell's doesn't have it (which is nearly impossible) than this would be my second choice.

PROS: Hard to find books
CONS: Expensive and rude

If you're visiting here for the first time, allow yourself at least two or three hours. You could easily lose yourself for an entire day in this monumental bookstore.
Knowlegeable sales staff, and also great for locally-produced and/or hard to find titles published in the area. The best in town by far, and one of the best I've seen anywhere.

PROS: they carry hard to find titles and have a monumental selection
CONS: cost is higher than some shops

Pros: Quick delivery;Well packaged

Cons: None

This is a great old bookstore. It reminds of the kind that used to be around when I was younger and before everything became homogenized, and I appreciate it for that. I suspect that people who are looking for cheap bargains or a corporate decor won't be very pleased by what they find, but for people who appreciate independent businesses this is a great place to try. The prices definitely aren't on the low end for most things, but it appears they're also trying to focus on rarer and collectible materials, so you wouldn't expect them to be. It's filled with all manner of memorabilia, ephemera and local items, so it's nice just to see what's on the walls as well as the shelves. The people behind the counter seem friendly enough if you're willing to start a conversation, but otherwise they tend to leave you alone. It's certainly not for everyone, but people who love books and stores with character should appreciate it for what it is.

Pros: Ambiance, selection, that old book store smell

Cons: Not the place for bargains

Sometimes you will find a gem, but then quickly put it back once you see the price tag. Rediculous! And the staff will not be amused if you haggle at all. A real dissapointment.

This is a great old place for people who love stores with character. It's an old style bookstore filled with books, paper, magazines, sheet music, sports memorabilia, etc. It is starting to look a little more updated and cleaner every time I go in, but it's definitely still a family owned and run business with a lot of interesting stock you won't find elsewhere, along with a solid fiction/literature section. Not good for mysteries or science fiction, but great for collectible/rare/antiquarian books, first editions, the social sciences, philosophy, music, etc. I highly recommend this place, but they're only open in the afternoons, last I checked from around 11-5 Monday through Friday and Saturday afternoon.

In a city of bookstores, this one is more interesting than most. I know it's been around for at least 10 years, and it's definitely independent: It feels like one of the stores you'd find in the old days. Filled with interesting stuff, run by an interesting guy and his son, it has good, solid stock with some rare and collectible stuff as well as a smattering of music, ephemera, etc. You won't find the bestsellers, but you should find great copies of the classics along with other fun stuff. It's also mostly an afternoon store, but it's also open on Saturdays if you can't make it during the week.
