So bad! The person in drums (Guy) has no heart in his job. He doesn't know about the products, he doesn't want to help you if you have a simple question a little before closing time (they're still open!), and he just has a consistent sense

Worst music store ever! Worst customer service I've ever seen! Staff was the rudest I've ever seen. They wouldn't let me try anything without showing them cash first. I've been to NYC pawn shops that were less offensive than these

Very impressive store...3 stores next to each other! Electric guitars, drums and a separate store for acoustic guitars. We were impressed with the friendliness of the staff, the amazing inventory and the low prices. When you walk into the place you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of guitars and amps they have. We were grateful that the person who greeted us Frank, gave us a few minutes to take it all in. He asked us what we were looking for (my daughter is just a beginner) and showed us real quality instruments in our price range. He showed us how everything worked, patiently answered our many questions and even taught my daughter a few basic chords on the guitar. He introduced us to the owner and other staff and they were very welcoming and assured us of their willingness to help us anytime we needed it.

This is the very best music store we have ever been in and we are recommending them to our family and friends.

Pros: Carry some brands other stores don't have

Cons: Inept and rude staff

When I am looking for something I will call around to the local stores and see if they have it before I go the internet route. It seems every time I call Apple's Drum shop the guy that answers is always just putting in an order and can get it for me but they never have anything in stock. That and the few times I have called I have been told the clerk is busy and he will call me back. Upside is they call you back when they can but downside again is not having the items in stock i am looking for. That and parking is a BITCH to get to this place!! Take the MAX if you go - stop right there.

Well being a beginner I have been going around to different stores to find the best gear for me. I came to apple just to price guitars and amps as I had my budget set and an idea of what to get. After just walking in the door a salesperson, I think his name was frank, asked if I needed any help or had questions. I told him I was a beginner and was looking for advice on the best set up for what I was going to be playing. He then asked about my budget... I told him around $200-$250 for just the guitar. He asked about music style and brand(s) of guitars. I told him and he took me over to an ESP M-50... right in my price range at $209 (guitar center does not have it) and showed me all the features on it. He then showed me decent amps that were not too costly and ran down the list of essential gear like a softshell case, etc. Then we got into a
discussion about music and bands, he even gave me the name of a local band to check out their music thats on myspace... they were very good. I will certainly be returning once I have the cash to drop on my gear, I don't know why they are rated so low as I found them to be very knowledgeable about the stuff they sell and very helpful.

The first time I went to Apple Music, the employees seemed a bit cheesy and not wanting to help me a lot. I thought the store was so-so, but I liked Showcase Music better. Then I went out looking for a new guitar with a friend who used to work at Apple and knows all the guys there. They then completely valued me and helped me out all they could. Their prices were fair and the guys working in the acoustic shop all remembered me. I've now spent close to $3500 in there and have been fine when the things I've purchased there need repairs. They do it quickly there and then, tell me what they did, don't charge me, and let me play what I want. So when I was having my main electric repaired there, I checked out some acoustics. I'm not a big acoustic player, don't know a whole ton about them, but I needed one. Apple's staff knew about everything they had in stock and helped me out to soon make a $2000 purchase. This is THE place to go for Epiphone and Gibson electrics and acoustics. They have a few Fenders (used) from time to time, but a good place to go for a good Fender selection with a good staff is Showcase Music. Try to befriend Apple's employees if you want to be taken seriously. Otherwise, you won't like this store. But if you are serious and they know you, it's a GREAT store.

Well, I'm glad I didn't run into any of the "rude" guys at Apple Music! Because of these reviews, I went in there thinking I'd be made a fool of... quite the opposite. I'm not rich; I'm not extremely knowledgable about guitars; I'm not an incredible musician. I received excellent service. They have a NO refund/return policy (hate that), which devastated me after my 1st purchase there (I didn't like what I had chosen). I called the person that sold it to me (he gave me his business card with his cell phone #) the evening I bought it... he told me no worries, we'll find you something. What a relief. I went in the following week and special ordered a guitar. I've had it for 2 weeks and I love it. He went well out of his way to help me and I spent hours in the small store at least twice. The man knows guitars and if you're looking, I'd suggest you go! Pricing was great, too... they don't want to lose sales to internet pricing and chain stores, so I got a good deal: a $930 guitar for $650. I've been looking for a long time, so I know that their prices are fair. Very satisfied!

staff was rude. there was one guy who didnt tick me off. staff watched me like a HAWK when i was trying anything out making it impossible for me to feel comfortable and focus on the instrument.

treated other customers the same way. dont go here. i left and went to portland musics acoustic store. the staff was amazingly helpful. they entertained an hour of various questions and pulled two capos out of packaging to let me try them and shrugged it off like it was nothing.

this time i bought a pair of strings and left but i will gaurantee you when im looking for a new acoustic i will be buying it from portland music not apple.

I've purchased a fair amount of musical equipment over the last twenty five years. In that time, I've done business with most of the dealers in Portland. Recently, I've gotten the best customer support from the people at Apple Music. Joel is extremely knowledgeable and has helped me numerous times with my MIDI studio including assistance with my computer setup. Whenever I talk with Toby about my electric guitar or electric mandolin needs, he's genuinely interested in figuring out a solution regardless of whether it involves a sale. Last year, Chuck provided assistance above and beyond the call of duty with an acoustic guitar that I bought somewhere else. Last summer, Joel and Luis helped me out of a jam by loaning me some speaker stands for a performance.

I've found that prices are comparable with most dealers these days so the biggest factor for me is customer service and follow up support (I'd even be willing to pay a little more for the follow up support). Apple Music has been great.

I've been using Apple music since 1987 for the majority of my purchases and must say that Joel and the crew have always been great and helpful. Although I buy some small things at Guitar Center, when I need good and correct information Joel always has the answers.

When I have had a problem they have worked with me to take care of the problem quickly and always to my satisfaction. When I've bought something I thought I needed and didn't they've always been willing to take it back. Just the other day I had a problem with a new mixer I'd purchased (not from them) and I couldn't get good help from where I bought it so I went to Joel and he was able to get my problem taken care of.

Service well above GC. Still the best place for the pros.

Wow ... by far the worst music retail experience in my entire life! If you buy something and you need to return it for some reason, don't waste your time because you wont get your money back. Do not buy high dollar items from this company. Extremely poor customer service, and bad business practices. Spend your money elsewhere before you flush it down the toilet by shopping at Apple. I wish I had four hands so I could give apple music four thumbs down.

I dont know what these other reviewers are talking about, I had a great time at apple music. the staff knew quite alot about the gear, and were not pushy at all, although i can understand why they wouldnt just let anyone play a guitar. this place is a must for any portland musician.

I had a couple thousand to burn and wanted to try a Laiho ESP. The sales person actually had the nerve to ask to see the cash upfront before he would take it off the wall! Who the hell carries a thousand large in cash anymore? Then some guy came out of the back yelling "I better not get any more F***ing calls today!". I ended up going to Guitar Center.

This store epitomizes tired old fashion high pressure salesperson cliche, these guys are out to glean as much as possible and will say anything to close a transaction. Unfortunately online competition as well as larger chain stores is facts of the marketplace and one would hope that local shops would choose to compete through great customer service and knowledgeable sales staff, but that is simply not the case with Apple Music.

I'm a native Oregonian musician, and I've shopped at just about every music store within a 25 mile radius of downtown. Apple music is, and always has been the very worst place to shop in terms of customer service. Unless you're in the hottest band in town or show obvious signs of deep pockets (in which case they'll brown nose you to the point of being obnoxious), they will treat you like dirt. Sales staff is very condescending, self-centered, and rude.

Unless you like being treated like a moron and/or enjoy the pushy used car salesman approach, you should avoid this store. The sales staff has been this way for the last 25 years, and I can't imagine it ever changing. How they stay in business is beyond me.

Take your hard earned dollars to Guitar Center, Portland Music, Tombstone Music, or anywhere else. You'll regret shopping at Apple.

why are there so many of these places, and where do the jerks who work there come from? this message is specifically about the larger portion of the apple music row. the electric guitars, etc.

there is only one good sales person at this entire location, and any time that i deal with him i am happy. i can't remember his name, but he is always proactive and friendly. the rest of the people are the worst - and because of them, i will never go back there unless i have a real emergency.

i've been treated like an idiot every time i have gone in there. no matter whether i was asking for something simple like a recommendation for a decent mid-range cord or for a hardware fix on my guitar. i get the distinct impression that since i am a girl and i don't look like i am rich, they dismiss me immediately.

the last visit is what sealed the deal with at least two of their workers rolling their eyes at me and seeming completely annoyed by the prospect of delivering an ounce of customer service. i really don't see how they can stay in business.

on the other hand, the acoustic store was really great and people were helpful.

i'm going to Old Town Music and Portland Music (both have had excellent customer service every time) from now on.

Good gear, Great selection, salse people werent exactly cozy, but nice enough. bought a killer guitar for a decent enough price (as in no more than aywhere else). during time when theyre rushed (saturdays and some early aftternoons) its a bit crazy nut other than that its a great store.

I buy ALL of my gear at Apple Music and have never had even average customer service. The people are always really helpful and quite funny. Not to mention its a local portland buisness, guitar center is like a Mc Donalds compared to Apple Music. The prices are quite reasonable as well, never list price. And the september sale is most definetly an event worth going to. The people always help me evn when i dont know entirely what i need. Apple is the only portland music store.
Perhaps if they treat you like an idiot as some other reviewers have mentioned, perchance you are an idiot. Also if they sell something as new when it was used (which Portland Music does frenquently, i would know I've worked there)its most likely that it was returned by some loser customer who didnt get the right pedal or whatever first.

I don't think I ask for too much when it comes to the retail experience. I want good selection, the ability to try new stuff out, for people to facilitate it when I want to buy stuff and for staff members to not be rude.

That being said, Apple Music is the most lacking retail experience I have ever had. Not only does their staff not know their stuff for the most part, they are extremely rude (they even make fun of eachother), they are elitists (although I don't want to join the elite group of old, ugly, washed up ex-garage-band wanna-be-motley-crue-rodies and don't know anybody that does), they make me mad every time I go in there, and I wonder how they stay in business because they seem completely unmotivated to make any sales (they'd rather shoot the breeze with eachother and go on smoke breaks).

But even though they have so many marks against them, I was willing to give them multiple chances. They have a lot of nice gear, and they're not afraid to let you try it out. But, even that isn't enough to convince me to bear their insufferable service now. They have pushed me over the edge.

They are also downright unintelligent. I had to explain a deal I made with one of their employees to another employee, and it made them mad and caused a big scene. So, after explaining it to 3 different people I finally got them to honor it, but the whole thing left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Here's a quote from one of their salespeople: "I don't give a f*** unless my name is on the invoice". And that seems to be their company motto.

Sure, there are like 2 cool people that work there. But I for one would rather shop at Guitar Center. Their service (sadly) is better, and they don't make you feel like a moron for coming in to their store.

You can't understand the level of incompetence without some first hand experience, but trust me: spare yourself and go somewhere else. Anywhere else.

Apple Music is hand's down one of the the worst retail experiences I have had in Portland. I found them to be totally dishonest with me. I have overheard them try to squeeze the last dollar out of kids, even when their parents are along. I feel sorry for both the kids and theiri unsuspecting parents. It starts right at the top, so absent a change of ownership, I can't imagine going back. There are so many better choices in Portland that I cannot understand how they stay in business, although they do have inventory, but beware of that too. I have seen something sold as new that I know for sure was used - the prior owner pointed it out to me!

I bought my son a limited edition Epiphone Wildcat at Apple Music. They were friendly when I was buying something. On vacation, we had to gate check the guitar on the airplane, and Delta broke it. We took it back to apple music to have it repaired. They treated my son and I like we were idiots. They didn't have the parts, and didn't seem too interested in looking up to see if they could order them. Finally, he just said, "This is going to be really expensive to fix, probably more than it's worth." He implied that I should just buy another guitar, since this Epiphone *only *cost me $500. When we need to purchase anything else that Apple may sell, we're going to go somewhere else.

I needed a shipping carton for an acoustic guitar, and was told by "James" on the phone that I could come down and see whether he might have one. I politely let him know that I lived 35 miles away, so could he please look and see whether he might have one for me? He answered in a tone I hadn't heard in a long time in P-Town: "No, I can't do that. You can just buy one from UPS or Fed Ex...."

I said, I urgently needed one today, and told him I would just take a chance and drive in. With my five-year old in tow, I entered the store an hour later: not a customer in sight anywhere in that huge store (Monday morning.) So I thought: hmmm, he couldn't find the time to take a peak in the cardboard recycling bin for me?

He produced he card board box in no time flat, and proceeded to write an invoice. What? "It's $10.-" he said, without even blinking, let alone turning read in shame. I had no choice: I came from far a way, with a hungry kid by my side, so I paid him the money.

But I also let him know that not even in Brooklyn would anyone have the nerve to charge for an old box destined to the recycling bin. I said: YOU did not pay for it, it's going to be recycled anyway, so why are you charging me $10,- ? His answer: You don't have to buy it! To which I responded that I indeed needed to get one, and that I thought this was a slimy way of doing business. Of course, he showed me the door...

Fair enough, it takes two, and this was my first and last visit to this store. Never again will I be blackmailed and my situation be exploited like this, if I can help it.

P.S.: I later called around to see how other stores would deal with my needs. Portland Music's employee was very polite and said "sorry, we don't have one today, but if you can wait until tomorrow, I will call you and you can pick one up at no charge". Portland Music it is, next time.

Let those who treat us kindly stay in business forever!

Cons: Unfriendly staff, charging for things that others give away for free

Apple has great selection in guitars and amps but that's about as far as it get's!
I purchased my self a vox ac30 with blue bell speakers on their big sale took it home and the reverb didnt work and on top of that they forgot to give me a foot switch that comes along with the amp .
So i return the amp looking for the salesman named frank who sold it too me only to find out hes not there then i get talked down to by another employee named zev who tells me i have to take the amp to repair shop that their warranty threw (only to find out its the wrong shop)
Then i finally get ahold of the employee who sold the amp to me so i bring it back down to apple and i am told it will take only a few days to repair wich ends up being a month later.
During this wait frank the employee tells me i've been waiting to long and that hes going to get me a new amp a couple days go by and i call back and he tells me that the amp is repaired and to come pick it up.
So i come in and i am greeted with glares and snide remarks from two other employees one named zev the other i dont know the name of then frank comes to me after a couple a minutes of waiting on him while he stands at the counter staring into space he finally takes notice of me and he takes my amp out to my vehicle i ask him why he said he would get me a new amp only to give back my old amp he replys by saying"you are making stuff up" he keeps saying this over and over while i try to talk to him in a reasonable voice he gets more angry and says that i am making him angry and says hes going inside and is not going to talk to me anymore.
So i am left with my amp out side confused and angry while the other empoyees inside luagh.
And that was my 1500$ dollar lesson in learning never to go back to apple ever again.
I suggest if you wanna get guitars or equipment heres some better places to go to "portland music co."/"trade up music"/"guitar crazy"

We had a totally different experience than the other reviewer, in the acoustic guitar store. We got spot-on, honest advice with a hands-off approach while shopping. We also listened as he helped other people, and it was clear he was doing the same with them, taking time, educating, and not up-selling.

We came back a month later ready to finally buy (after a lot of shopping, research, and comparison, my husband actually wound up deciding on the very first guitar this guy had recommended) and he remembered us as soon as we walked in! We even got a thank you note in the mail.

My husband went back a little later to pick up some small thing, and while he was there the salesman was excited about a new guitar he had in and set him up to play it just for fun--even though he knew we'd just bought a guitar (in a totally different price class from the gem he let him play) and there was absolutely no chance of a sale in it for him. He was just genuinely into a cool guitar and wanted to share the experience.

We also did price comparisons, and this store's prices were the same as most, better than some.

Can't speak to anyone's experience in the electric store, but if you're looking for an acoustic guitar, they're highly recommended.

Pros: Good service, nice guitars, right on Max line

.

Some of the store's sales personnel don't seem to understand that good customer service is paramount.

I bought one of those amps you can use for street performances there. I brought it back due to a defective battery. They couldn't give me a new one on the spot because they said they'd need to get a replacement battery shipped in. The salesman said he have the new battery charged for me. When I came to pick the amp up, my salesman had the day off and the other salesman couldn't find my amp. Apparently, salesman 1 had left it an odd area of the showfloor with the battery plugged in charging (not clear if overcharging would have damaged it), and didn't bother to tell anyone that I was coming in that day to pick it up.

Poor service = taking my business elsewhere going forward.

Apple music is a prime example of how not to run a guitar store. First off theire prices are too high. Almost everything is at list prices. Second, and even worse is their management and employees. If you're not about to spend five grand or are a rock star they are total snobs. I can't tell you what a breath of fresh air it's been shopping at Portland Music, as their employees are friendly and helpful.

I took my son's guitar (purchased elsewhere) in for an adjustment and while waiting started looking at amps. The salesman was friendly and not at all pushy. I told him my amp was noisy and expected a big sales push but he offered to listen to my amp if I brought it in. We ended up buying a Classic 30 Peavy after trying a few amps. We thought the people were nice here and the place was just full of great gear. Would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Apple Music.

I recently viewed the ratings people had posted on this site while in the search for a nice place to shop for an acoustic guitar for my grandfather. I was surprised to see apple music rated so poorly, especially since I've long been a customer of the store. I decided to venture to apple anyways and see what the fuss was all about. All it took was one step in the door and I was quickly taken in the right direction. Chuck the manager of the acoustic shop helped me find the best possible guitar for the best possible price. I would recommend them to anyone in the hunt for a guitar, not only was he friendly but he knew his stuff.

Just bought a Breedlove guitar from Chuck at Apple Music. He was extremely helpful - even taught me a chord or two. Apple Music's selection of instruments is amazing. There staff is friendly. Would recommend this store to anyone who appreciates fine instruments.

Whenever I've gone into Apple Music they always treat me like I'm an idiot. Also, the employees seem to get irritated when people ask questions. I can see why it bothers them though, it gets in the way of them wandering around not doing anything. At least thats the way it looks to me. One good thing about poor service is you can browse without being bothered, but how's that different from the Internet?

I've heard about the reputation of Apple but my experience there was just terrible. The salespeople were rude and unhelpful...maybe I didn't look 'rockstar' enough but I was looking to buy a great guitar for my nephew's graduation and I wanted something special and cost wasn't an issue. But no one was willing to help me as I had no idea what I needed...I thought that is what a salesperson is supposed to do..inform and sell. I will never go there again.
