After eating here a few times and talking with the friendly employees I've learned that this BBQ is true and homemade by hardworkers. If you by chance catch them when its PACKED, they really go into overdrive. It may take some

After eating at Tennessee Red's I tried to find a contact email on their website so I could write to them about my experience. There is no way to contact them through their website. Too bad since I really don't like to air dirty laundry in public.

I go into any restaurant expecting the chef/cooks actually want to turn out decent food. So I was so very disappointed with the meal I had. I ordered their Beef rib plate that came with 3 ribs, fries, and cole slaw.

Each rib had no more that 2 oz of meat, all of which was way overcooked and dy beyond description. It was spread out over each rib so thin that there was no way to cut anything off with a knive and fork, so I ended up chewing on each rib and had to really struggle to pull anything edible off each. What I did get was tough and chewy. not what I was expecting.

I love fries, and the "taste" of these fries were quite unique, but in a good way, Tennessee must use some kind of spice as these seemed to have a bit of a kick. However, they were cold and limp. I can understand a cook sending out a steak that's not cooked to the customer's desire since the cook cannot really see inside the steak, but fries? Perhaps the cook who put these on my plate was blind? Kidding aside, this meant that the cook knowingly sent fries to a customer that he/she would not eat themselves. I belive I was curtious to my waiter so I cannot believe the cook was getting back at me for something I did? Perhaps he/she just doesn't want to cook at that restaurant any more.
The only passable food was their cole slaw, quite creamy and a bit tangy - but it wasn't $12 good.
I cannot comment on the rest their menue items so perhaps others have had better experiences than I. That's good for Tennessee, but I know I wlll not go back there.

They advertise award winning ribs and the smoke smells good when you go by but it's just not so! On three occasions the beef ribs just were not up to par. One night I took some slightly elder friends for drinks and dinner and the waitress was al bit put off because they took their time considering their order and asked for a specific cocktail wherein she acted like it was too much trouble. Here's a positive the gumbo was very good. Suggestions, bring some prices down, try a little harder with the service and don't forget to smile - each customer no matter what their age should be treated equally.

I just picked up an order from this place. I got some of their brisket with the memphis sauce. I opened it when I got home, took two bites and threw the entree out.

I'm an opened minded eater, but gross is not something I look for in a sauce.

My sweetie and have gone to Tennessee Red's twice and got great service both times. Both times we had the drink specials and the were pretty good and only five bucks. We ordered ribs. They smoke theirs. The ribs tasted great the next day as left overs. I do prefer mine wet, but they did have good flavor. The beans and rice however, could use some help.
What we really really enjoyed was the burger topped with pulled pork. We shared one and it was delicious. We are going back soon to have another. I think i might get my own next time, hehe...
We also love that they have flat screen tv's all over the place. We are Blazers fans and each time we went we got to watch the game, woohoo!!!!! GO Blazers!!!!
I am looking foward to trying some of the unique appetizers that i saw on the menu as well, great place to watch the game.

We Went to Tennessee Red's on a Saturday about 4pm. We were hoping for a good meal, we were completely disappointed. We go in and the place looks like some dive bar but I think well lets give it a try maybe the food is great. After finding out their all out of pulled pork, we order, I ordered a rack of baby back ribs and my wife ordered brisket and drinks for us both. There is almost no one in the place, a few minutes later I see an order placed to be delivered, the waitress is sitting behind the bar with her back to the room, 5 or 10 minutes later the cook comes out and tells the waitress to deliver the food. My wife thought the brisket was fine. My ribs were ok but ribs should be cooked with the sauce on not on the side, cooked on and the sauce can caramelize and penetrate into the meat, macaroni and cheese was blah, fries were greasy, cornbread was blah. We asked for more sauce waitress says ok never comes back. Would have liked a another round of drinks but I am unable to easily get waitresses attention. Finally walk up to bar and ask her for our bill. The worst service I have had in my life, I was trying to think of some place worse and couldn??t come up with one. I don??t usually write reviews but I had to this time. Will never go back!

I tried Tennessee Red's BBQ one afternoon and was not impressed... I have heard good things about this place but did not see it or taste it when i visited... I ordered the pulled pork, the presentation off the food was great. The pork was not soaked in BBQ sauce which allows you to really taste the smoked meat. Usually this would be a good thing for BBQ, however the pork was horrible!!!!!! Greasy, oily, or some adjective that would be unappealing...
I did not finish the meat because it just was not good. The side dishes need work as well. But at least they were not as bad as the meat and I was able to get something to eat for lunch.

I will try it again to make sure that the one experience was not a mistake or an off day for the food.

Pros: Central Location..... Server was really nice...

Cons: Oily, greasy, no flavor

I went to Tennessee Red's a couple years ago when I first came to town and it was pretty good. I live close by, so I took my son there for dinner a couple weeks ago when he came into town and it was just awful.

The ribs have WAY too much pepper on them and they are TOUGH! Ribs done properly should be tender, that requires a sufficient amount of brining time before smoking and cooking. The brisket was tough as well, and the corn muffins were hard, lumpy, and disgusting. Even the server agreed they were horrible. The cole slaw wasn't fresh and the red beans and rice was nothing to write home about. And what's with putting all the sides in little cups? Makes eating them nearly impossible without spillage.

The "spicy" Memphis-style sauce is way too hot to be called spicy (I eat a lot of hot food, not a wimp, so I know what I'm talking about!)

I guess the pulled pork sliders were okay, I didn't order any but my son said they were good, however, he could barely breathe because they were smothered in the "spicy" Memphis-style sauce.

All this disgusting food set us back about $45 too, so it was NOT cheap, we didn't even have beers. And certainly no one offered to offer any kind of remedy for my complaint about the corn muffins.

Who the hell is the chef here? He should be ASHAMED.

I have lived and worked near by for many years, in fact since well before the original Tennesee Red started the place. It was amazing with literally a line around the corner for lunch, but the inside was a real dump back then. Well the inside is cleaned up and expanded, with a nice bar and excellent service generally. It is very important to Mary that you leave happy and satified. One of my faves is the pulled pork sandwich which is the best I have ever had. Excellent flavor and juicy. The sides are generally good, I wish they had a few more; the original place had at least 20, but the selection is still good. We eat here at least once a week. Some of the apps make a fine lunch. I think the fries are the best anywhere. The bad reviews have to be from the competition, this place is great!

We ate at TR's a long time ago, and loved the ribs. Recently we ate there and the ribs have really gone downhill. Service was great, atmosphere good, sides good too. But the ribs .. this is what the place is supposed to be known for?

Smelled great as we walked in but thats where it ended. Got ribs and a brisket sandwich. Neither one had any flavor! Mac and cheese was bland. Im from Georgia/Tennessee so I know BBQ and this is not it! Decent fried okra and corn muffins. I would come here for a beer but not to eat.

I recently went into Reds with some friends after a years hiatus and was very impressed with the changes made there. The ribs were delicious and the waitress was super friendly. I don't know what all the bad reviewers are talking about, we had a great dinner and stayed to listen to the live blues. I guess they brought back the Tues. night karaoke so I will definately be returning.

Ugh! Where to start? New manager New Owner. Okay we thought we'd give it another try. The last visit under the old guard was awful. Well, last night's visit made that seem like a joy.
The service is the worsed. If you aren't friends of the bartender, owner or manager, you can forget about getting service. And who lets a bunch of LOUD screamng kids into a bar?!!!
We waited for an hour for food that NEVER can. The bartender said "oops I forgot. I was busy talking to my friends." WHAT THE HELL!!!
They have sort of cleaned up the place. But no amount of paint and new furniture will make up for such crappy service and trashy uppity atomsphere. You guys are a dirty little Barbeque place, where do you get off being all exclusive? Hope those folks can support you. 'Cause I will not be suggesting this place, and in fact I will be telling everyone about this experience. I'd be sending you an email, but you don't have one...maybe cause you really really dont care. Well, guess what if you go away, I don't think anyone else will care either. Learn to run a business. Your customers are way more important to your business than the bartender's friend, two of whom work at T.Reds! Good Greif

We went to T red's last week after not going for MONTHS! we walked in and the decor had changed (which is a plus) and the server was super friendly and fun...HOWEVER...they no longer have the yummy chicken salad or the WONDERFUL, TO DIE FOR jo-jo's...and the MEAT...EWWWWWWWWWWW!
THE FOOD WAS AWFUL! we ordered several happy hour items to try and none of it was good. the chicken strips had ZERO flavor, the pork sliders and ribs tasted like fake smoke flavor w a little fish mixed in. The meat was sooo fatty and smokey tasting we couldn't even eat it. the fried broccoli was the only thing that was edible. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE FOR FOOd WHAT-SO-EVER...but if you're just wanting a cocktail and a lovely server then check it out.

We visited Tennessee Reds Restaurant this evening at 5:00 pm, and was very disappointed. First of all, we asked about barbecued baked beans (which they did not carry), but was told the red beans and rice was very good. We decided to give it a try, only to be told they had ran out of this side dish. We then selected the collard greens as a side dish, and was told they only had enough left for one side order (I finally settled for the okra side dish). When our orders of beef ribs and country pork ribs arrived, they were dry, tough and hardly edible. They were cut such that I could not even cut through my ribs individually to pick them up and eat them. When asked if we were enjoying our ribs I commented that I couldn't cut through them. She offered to take them back and have them cut through so that I could pick them up and eat them. When I got them back I still was not able to get the meat off the bones to eat . We are rib eaters who normally love most ribs and can't get enough, but not in this situation. Unfortunately, we ended up leaving over half of our ribs.

This was absolutely one of the worst meals I have ever eaten out. The brisket was dry and leather like- almost tasted like dog food, the ribs were flavorless and fatty, the red beans and rice were better than the meat but still horrible, bbq beans must have been out of a can which made it better then anything else, mashed potatoes tasted like watered down poorly prepared boxed potatoes, gravy was horrible, cornbread- WOW! it was cold, nasty, hard and flavorless. I don't think my dog would even have eaten this BBQ. The good reviews on here are astounding, I really dont see this place being "delicious" or even mediocre. Thoroughly dissapointed. Rarely do I eat a meal and feel jipped, I debated leaving and not paying it was so bad. Very rundown looking, but that doesn't turn me away. Help was polite, but you could tell she was dying to work somewhere with some actual business-tips. Please save your time and do not go there, try Podnah's Pit on Prescott around 14th. We tried Reds because Podnahs was closed. Big mistake. Should have gone to McDonalds. SO DISSAPOINTING!!!!!

In 2006, Tennessee Red's was rated no. 6 of the Ten Best Bar-B-Que Joints nation-wide in 'National Geographic's book, The 10 Best of Everything (An Ultimate Guide for Travelers). As they say, "You can look it up" (p. 213). This is what drew me to Red's during a recent trip to Portland (I'm from Washington State). I and my 3 friends were thoroughly delighted with the quality of the food as well as the service. This place is the real deal!

Desperate for a quick lunch fix last week, I went to Tennessee Red's and ordered the $7 chicken quesadilla. I don't know what I was thinking, since there is a perfectly good taqueria in the same neighborhood that serves delicious tacos and quesadillas for a paltry $3, but alas...the quesadilla from TR's made me sick as a dog for two days (I know it was their food because I became sick within an hour or so of eating it). After several hours of throwing up, all I had the strength to do was lie in bed and ache for the next two days. And to top it off, it didn't even taste good. It was soaked in the grease from the cheddar cheese, the meat was overcooked and dry, and there wasn't even any pico de gallo, which is a quesadilla standard. As a true Southerner, I would NOT recommend this place to anyone looking for good barbeque, or good food, for that matter. Head to the Delta if you want true soul food, like collard greens, catfish, and fried chicken, and there are a number of authentic BBQ places in NoPo and NE Portland (I highly recommend Podnah's Pit!) that serve it up right for the same price (or cheaper!!). Tennessee Red's is simply terrible.

Pros: Decent karaoke on Monday nights, friendly staff

Cons: The food is sickening, literally!

.

The service was good. The food was terrible. Horrible ribs, tough and fatty and dried out. The mexican food is just as bad. The casdia (sp) had so much sauce it was impossible to taste anything in there. The red beans and rice were also awful. They used sticky white rice and not very many beans.
All in all an expensive night out for bad food.

This place is a meat lovers paradise. They offer several plates of pork, beef, and chicken cooked up southern style on a bbq parked outside on the sidewalk. They have several dipping sauces for the meats that will make your mouth water. So if youre looking for that back country, moonshine, deep south type of cooking, than this is your place. They also serve up the best ribs in town!!

Pros: Delicous hunks of meat, southern style! And a really cool dining area!

Cons: Kind of expensive, and the location is sort of hidden.

If you walk or drive down 11th, you can smell Red cooking the daily fair. Like most BBQ, it smells heavenly. This is southern style BBQ and it is good. The prices are high, but it's cheaper than a trip down south. There are better places in town for BBQ, but if you are in the area and have a hankerin' for some down home BBQ, check it out.

I recently discovered Tennessee Reds on a barbeque binge and this place is great! Not only was the food mouthwatering, there was PLENTY of it. With these portions you never go away hungry. They also have a full bar, which I stopped by the next Monday for kareoke. The servers and bartenders are nice and take good care of you. Check it out.

Pros: yum!, comfortable, pin ball & pool

I have never had anything but positive (and delicious) experiences at Tennessee Reds. The food is great and I'm excited to try more of the things on the menu but I can't seem to stop ordering the pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw on it! I am getting hungry just thinking about it.
The service is always great, and it's a fun neighborhood dive bar by night. Love the bartenders!

I read the reviews here, and if I didn't live right down the street from Red's I wouldn't have gone anywhere near it. That would have been unfortunate! GREAT BBQ! And the service was spot on! I don't know about those of you who complained about service but I have been in Red's countless times and the service is excellent! After the restaurant shuts down the bar stays open and Jack the bartender is spectacular! If you're looking for good BBQ, or looking to have a fun night of cocktailing Red's is a great neighborhood place, and has $2 well drinks, weds and thurs!

I heard this place was run in to the ground, but I went there and it's back! I guess there is a new owner, and the food is really good. The Happy Hour offers cheap, good food. Try the lemonade and the green salad with catfish. My boyfriend is in love with the brisket. Try this place again, I'd hate to see it go.

Went there in '96 on a recommendation. Blew me away...it was awesome. Being a "tarheel" from North Carolina, I know good 'cue' and this place was great. Came back time and time again...NEVER anything but superb. Great food, lots of it, good service, great music...blah, blah, blah. Moved away for a few years and as soon as I moved back here in '04, made a bee-line to Red's. What a TOTAL disappointment. The food sucked, the service sucked, the whole experience sucked. They added a bar and now I don't think they know what they are. Save your money !

I think the previous reviewers must have gone in the wrong building?!? There is a full BBQ menu from collard greens to a huge 1/4 chicken 6 pork rib meal (Smoky Mtn Combo). The blackened catfish is so good that just writing this makes my mouth water. I give Tennessee Red's two thumbs up +

Pros: open late for dinner, pabst on tap, location location....

Cons: , no men's commode

I had the "tarheel." Having lived for awhile in NC, this version wasn't even close to a real NC style BB-Q. But it wasn't awful. I'm still trying to find a real NC style BB-Q in Portland

After Red left it morphed into crappy BBQ and worse Mexican food and the Zydeco music replaced with a TV permanently tuned to the Spanish station. Now it's a bar? Not worth the time it takes to park the car.

I would have to say, the current owners of Tennessee Red's are making a valiant attempt at trying to be just as good as the finer establishments in downtown Portland. However, their attitude and lack of customer service knowledge leaves something to be desired. The place is cold, the bartenders act like they don't like the place, and the crowd is trying too hard to be way too fashionable. The other establishments in the SE Portland area are certainly less frigid than this place.

The place has seen better days but that makes it the more fun. Nothing fancy just good eats for healthy appetites.
