Beautiful garden and well worth the entrance fee. If you have a friend who lives here the local library rents a pass out and then it's free. I enjoyed about two hours walking around and sitting in the silence on a visit in November.

The Japanese Garden is located near the Rose Garden overlooking downtown Portland. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit and to spend a couple of hours strolling the gardens and ponds. Check your local library to see if they offer free passes to visit the garden - I know the main library in Hillsboro has free one-day passes that you can pick up (for two people) and return at the end of the day.

This was a very relaxing experience. This is something to see not only for tourists and locals. There is a wonderful view of Portland too. Sand gardens, waterfalls, and beautiful taste of what kind of nature Portland does have to offer.

One of the must see attractions of Portland, Oregon. My husband's parents live in Oregon so we visit every now and then. One place we like to visit on a day of liesure is the Japanese Gardens. The garden really looks as if your really in Japan. It's better if you go during the weekdays where there aren't too many tourists. The admission to get in is pretty cheap also.

The Japanese Garden, located in the West Hills of Portland, is acutally divided into five seperate gardens: Strolling Pond Garden, Tea Garden, Natural Garden, Flat Garden, and the Sand and Stone Garden. The gardens are just beautiful and provide a peaceful, tranquil envirionment. They have many events taking place each month, such as writing workshops, tea, and other exhibits. You can sign up for an informative tour if you would like. They have daily tours April through October. Don't forget to stop off at the gift shop on your way out. You won't be disappointed! They have a nice selection of gifts including; tea pots, books, candles, chop sticks, toys, garden items, and much more. Highly recommended!

There's quite an uphill trek from the parking lot to the main gate, so if you're unfit or elderly, jump on the shuttle. The entrance fee is only $7, and a few days a year it's free. You definitely don't want to rush around the gardens in an hour. This is the type of place you want to relax, enjoy the beauty, and get the feeling of inner peace. The East end of the gardens affords you a view of the Portland skyline - the one utilized the most in postcards of the city.

PROS: Beautiful landscaping & water features. Inner peace.
CONS: Even though you can take the MAX, you then have to get a bus.

The Japanese Gardens are right next to the Rose Gardens in Portland. They are absolutely beautiful. There is quite a hike up the hillside to get to the entrance but they do offer a shuttle service. Once inside you don't even fill like you are in the city. The settings and plants are so peaceful and on the weekends they have a live person up on the hill playing music. It is a great place to take the whole family or for a romantic walk.

Beautiful gardens, nice plants and landscaping. Recommend to get an annual membership so that you can go there as many time as you want. It is big, so you might feel it is your own garden although the parking lot is filled. A lot of my friends visit Japanese Garden often just to get gardening ideas, or a good escape from the busy life. It is very close to downtown Portland, a big plus!

PROS: Close to the city, beautiful landscape
CONS: Parking can be a problem during weekends or holidays

Centrally located in Washington Park at around the 500 foot level, overlooking downtown Portland, this is one of the most beautiful areas in the city and is considered to be one of the most authentic Japanese gardens short of those in Japan itself. The location consists of five different gardens for your enjoyment.

it's a very beautiful garden at the top of the famous washington park rose gardens in portland. It's about $7 to get in, but once you do, it's well worth it. The pond with the huge goldfish is my personal favorite. And some of the trees make you feel like you have actually stepped through some kind of portal into fantasy land.

PROS: beautiful, cheap
CONS: none

Large well kept Gardens and facility just above Portland Rose Garden and near the Zoo. Membership available or pay an entrance fee. There is a Shop where you can buy souvenirs. Monthly events occur. You will feel as if you are in Japan! There is a large parking lot. You can walk up the path or take a minibus to the garden located on a hill.

If you enjoyed the Chinese Garden Downtown you will love the Japanes Garden near the zoo. It is a bit of a trek(Take the max to the zoo then wait for a shuttle) but worth it. The Japanese garden is spectacular with it's multiple gardens, moss covered grounds and natural Portland trees. You can even see the view of the city below. Gorgeous!
