Chef Matt is exceptional! The best seafood menu in town. I had fresh Grilled Columbia Salmon. Large portion and very tender. Delicious. Also tried my friends' Blue Cheese Halibut- it is to die for!! I can't wait to go back. Very comparable prices. Excellent service and atmosphere. The place was buzzing the whole time! Thanks Fishwife. we'll be seeing you again!

The Fishwife is my favorite restaurant. Its family owned & operated, great food & service, cheaper fresher fish & chips than any seafood spot in the city, everything is homemade & as sustainable as possible. I went there just last week & decided it was my time to give the Fishwife staff the praise they deserve for all their dedication & service over the years. I was super dismayed however when i came this site & read the ignorant reviews posted last about my fave spot! To the silly people who were unhappy with their togo order & their "bad service" by the chef: First, dont get grilled fish togo. It is not a good idea. Second; dont harrass a chef/ manager when they are super busy in the middle of cooking a dinner rush. They are coordinating MY food, flustered & stressed. Call the next day or towards the end of the nite and ask to speak with the manager. Thirdly, Halibut is a dry fish that is not in season right now; thus rendering it dryer than the fresh. I apologize if i seem emotional but this place is FREAKIN AWSOME. I have been eating there for years; grown to know the staff including the "rude female manager" who works both front & back of the house, has always provided me & my friends with thoughtful service, makes all the desserts at Fishwife & has been locally & nationally recongized for her accomplishments. (She was featured in this months issue of Mix magazine & appeared on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's No Reservations) So go to The Fishwife. Get the oysters. get the chowder. Try the specials, theyre always amazing. Dont order grilled halibut togo (unless u already know u like it & ur normal). And dont angrily approach busy chefs who apparently have been busy enough that nite to run out of grilled halibut. CHEERS!

so we live very close to the Fishwife and decided to call in an order for carry out. The halibut Parmesan is very good and we have had it before. So i called it in and they said 30 to 40 minute wait. so when Ezekiel brought the food home the halibut was like a dry chicken breast. Awful. He took it back and they said it doesn't travel well, we live maybe 2 minutes away and have had it a few times in the past, even taken leftovers home that reheated fine the next day and didn't dry out like what we had. Anyway So they say they will recook us some halibut, they at 7:30pm they are all the sudden out of halibut fillets, seriously? so they offered fried halibut, did i want anymore fried food? not really but we settled for it. when they bagged up the food Ezekiel nicely asked if they give you an equal amount money wise because fried halibut might be cheaper then halibut Parmesan. The chef that made our food must have been the manager because she said, THE PRICE DIFFERENCE DOESN??T BOTHER HER!!! so Ezekiel said IT BOTHERS ME I AM THE ONE PAYING FOR IT so then the lady opened the til and slapped a 20 on the counter and said DOES THAT WORK FOR YOU? Ezekiel just grabbed everything and left and was shocked at such horrible customer service.

Just a note, when he brought the food home they added a piece of cheescake and cobbler and we were satisfied with the fried halibut it was very good. Now if the chef would have had been polite to show Ezekiel the fried halibut and how much was there and informed him they threw in a couple desserts then there would have been no problems and he would have been a satisfied customer. Very rude customer service from the chef. It is so hard to find good customer service these days. its sad because i like that little Restaurant. i know if that chef is working we wont go there, we will turn around and leave.

I have been a customer of the Fishwife for many years. Last week I went in and ordered dinner for my wife and myself to take home after a long day. We ordered the Scallop Fetticini, salad and 2 cups of clam chowder to go. Total bill $55 with tip. We had dinner about 9pm so I put the chowder and took it from the "to go" cup into a regular household bowl into the microwave to heat it up. We started to eat the chowder and on the 2nd or 3rd bite I bit into a lovely 2" by 3" piece of hard plastic that apparantly some idiot in the kitchen didnt see before they poured the chowder into the bowls. Talk about a buzz kill when you are really ready for a great dinner. Really puts that on hold dosent it? So ok its late Im wondering what might be in the main course now so instead we tossed it so as to not hopefully find any other foreign objects.I go back 2 days later to be told to call the owner.I show the manager the piece of plastic with chowder still on it. I do so and long story short she offered me 1 bowl of the plastic chowder, to in her mind "make things right". Really?????? I would think a $50 gift card that we could use for a return visit just to say, Sorry we made a mistake we are sorry that your dinner had plastic in it. Please come back because your business is important to us. Nope none of that. Just old school arrogance and crappy customer service.
Never again, if I could give zero stars I would.

What doesn't look like much from the outside is a great surprise inside. They have a great selection of fresh fish dishes and an always rotating menu of Oregon beers. The wairstaff is always friendly and curteous. It is a little pricey, but definitely worth it. I make a point to eat there at least once a month. The Cioppino soup and fish baskets are always a good choice.

I ordered a blackened fish sandwich and coleslaw yesterday, and was pretty disappointed. The fish was a mess of bright red oil and spices, there was absolutely no distinguishable fish flavor to be found. I'd might as well have been eating bologna or tofu. This was served on a bun, covered with melted cheddar, making this one of the greasiest sandwiches I've ever eaten, and I just got back from eating tortas in Mexico! Red oil was literally running all over the plate.

The coleslaw it came with was also some of the worst I've ever had. It seemed to be a thin mix of cabbage and mayonnaise. Unbelievably bland.

Perhaps their mains are better, but I'm not sure I'm going to bother.

We visited the Fishwife for lunch today. Nothing fancy here, just cleanly prepared seafood, crinkle-cut fries that were obviously cooked in fresh oil, and some nice sides - - we tried the cole slaw and it was quite good. We opted for grilled cod and grilled oysters; both were cooked in butter but were not drowned in it, and both were just right - - cooked but not overdone. Bottled beer prices are reasonable - - in fact, ALL the prices are very reasonable. About the only fancy touch was the incongruous white cloth napkin, since the basic atmosphere is more or less diner, but it is clean and comfortable, and we were knocked out by how friendly everyone on the staff was. We'll be back for dinner and are looking forward to trying out the chowders.

My boyfriend and I go to the fishwife normally once a week. We love the fresh seafood specials that are always changing. There is at least a new type of seafood to try every week. The service is always great, and the staff friendly. If you are looking for good clam chowder, look no farther! The crab cocktail is always excellent (it's what I have every time). One downfall would have to be the water is normally not iced, so it's not cold, but if you can look past the water you won't be disappinted!

Every Saturday nite I go to the Fishwife for my weekly treat to myself. It's become like my weekend kickoff mantra. The service is always friendly and down to earth, they have an impressive list of quality brews, and the food is consistently excellent. My favorites are the fresh Dungeness crab cocktails and the Cod fish & chips; which is a huge serving and a steal at under $7! Their halibut is great too, but the Cod is my favoite, so light & moist. If Im feeling a little more outside the box, i usually go for the dinner specials; which change from week to week based on what fresh seafood is available. Last Friday I tried the chef's choice, a classic sauteed mussell dish made with bacon, apples, brandy & cream...it was pretty much in the top 5 meals of my life! The specials at the Fishwife are always impressive, and I was pleased to notice an addition of a naturally raised meat special to their menu. Finally I can talk my best friend who hates seafood into enjoying my Saturday nite tradition!

I have been going to this place for years. The atmosphere is comfortable and homey...the prices are a bit high for my taste but the food has always been worth it. The chowder is so thick and yummy. Their grilled Halibut is my favorite, it is so good and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Their clams strips are bigger than I have ever seen and so good. The owners are nice people too. I took a friend there yesterday to introduce her to the best clam chowder in town. She was nervous to try it b/c she is so picky, so the owner gave her a free taste, which was more like a free cup of chowder. My friend loved it! I highly recommend this place.

I called to talk with someone about the menu because I had seen it on a website a month ago. After I asked the question the lady on the phone was very short with me and said they had no website and the person that could help me was too busy to answer my question. This is a dissapointment for me b/c i recently moved to the neighborhood and was looking forward to finding a great restaurant close by. Looks like I need to go elsewhere.

I moved into the Portsmouth neighborhood a few months ago and this is my favorite local place to eat (although, admittedly there's not a lot of competition for that honor). The food here is tasty, the service friendly, and the prices are reasonable, although the price on some of the more exotic dishes seems somewhat unexpected for such a "casual" restaurant. It's usually worth it though, and the food here is the main attraction - not the atmosphere.

Their halibut fish and chips is one of the better I've had, they go nice and light on the breading and use quality halibut. It's location near the bus stop on the corner of Portsmouth and Lombard makes for some entertaining people watching as well if you're lucky enough to score a window seat.

I deep-fry shrimp at home, but I can't beat the butterflied deep-fried shrimp at Fishwife's. The fresh fish specials are excellent, especially the salmon and halibut. Tasty, thick chowder!
Avoid the cheddar and crab open-faced sandwich, the only disappointing item I've had there.
