Expect to pay extra for salad, antipasto. That left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Too bad cuz the pasta, sauce and meatballs were delicious.

Going to DeNicola's is a family tradition, and it's wonderful to go to a place that embodies the Italian traits of warmth, openness, friendliness, and delicious food! The garlic cheese bread is the best I've ever had, and the marinara meat

Ok. Went to DeNicola's for the first time last year. Had one good dish and one bad one. The bad one was the veal and it tasted rubbery, lemony, and just plain ol' bad. Had good wine though so obviously my judgment was clouded when I decided to go back this evening.

I ordered the basil fettuccine and spaghetti with italian sausage. How can an Italian food restaurant mess up spaghetti and red sauce? Let me tell you how.

The dish looked like it had a layer of red water under the noodles, that I think was an attempt at sauce. Then I tried one bite of sausage and promptly gagged it down. The texture was that of baby food, and the taste was just awful. I am not one to return orders, and I very nicely told the server I could not eat it and no I did not want to try something else instead. The boiled sausage taste was something I will sadly never forget.

THEN....I had to pay for it! I had to pay for half the cost of the overpriced, watery, nastiness. The manager was a b****, and insisted that all of her customers love the sausage. If that's the case, it is because all of their customers must be geriatric cases who lost their taste buds after WWII.

The strip club right next door has better food than this Italian nightmare.

DO NOT GO TO DENICOLAS.

The bread they brought us had fruit flies crawling in and out of it. When we brought it to their attention they weren't surprised. They offered no solutions and when questioned they said it was because of work on the roof. When we left they still charged us for our drinks and made no gestures to make us happy, not even an apology. If this is what the dining room is like what is happening in the kitchen. We will not go back.

Way over priced for just OK food. The sauces might be, might be, homemade but nothing else seems to be.

I too had a fruit fly commit suicide in my water.

Over all I have no complaints about the service other than she could have been quicker with the swatter.

I haven't had the best service here, people are rude. The owners seem like they have a stick up there....you know.

But, the food is good and we like eating the italian calzones. They are HUGE for 20.00. It will literally last you about 3 meals if you are an average size person. YUMMY!

I have also had the steamed clam fettucini, but for the price I would go with the calzone. I like this place, and it has been in the family for a long time.

I bet everyone who votes this place to be horrible is used to eating at the Olive Garden, where it is just about the same price if not more expensive and the service is SO cheesy. haha

There were so many fruit flies in the restaurant it was very distracting and disgusting. I killed four before dinner arrived, one got in my water glass and one landed on my fathers face while I was talking to him. I told our waitress and she stated there was nothing she could do about it but try moving us to a different table. I told her I wanted the manager to know, she stated she was the manager. She stated the flies were in the restaurant because it was raining and did not offer us anything, but did take away my water glass and brought one back without a fly in it (hopefully a different glass?)
I ordered the chicken scallopine which was the special. It stated there was a chicken breast on top of spicy red sauce and linguine. The chicken was completely cut up and mixed into the pasta, linguine was from a box. Asked the host on the way out he stated they do not make the pasta but do make the sauces.
Would NOT reccomend.

After driving past this place a thousand times, I decided I should probably try it. From the outside, it looks like it could possibly be a little hidden secret kind of place.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

The bread basket you get when you're seated is essentially the Italian equivalent of Wonder Bread.

They brought out some "antipasto" which consisted of sliced canned black olives, carrot sticks that tasted like bleach, string cheese, and under-ripe tomatoes with a mini cup of Ranch? dressing to dip it in.

We ordered a Caesar Salad, Minestrone, the Ricotta Ravioli, Gnocchi and the Tortellini.

The lettuce in the Caesar was dry and again tasted like bleach. The dressing was obviously from a can and the croutons and Parmesan were of the lowest possible quality. The Minestrone was little more than oily cabbage water.

The entrees were awful. The Raviolis and Tortellinis were dry and clearly pre-packaged, frozen, and simply heated and smothered in canned tomato sauce in the kitchen. I mean really - the marinara was absolutely atrocious. It tasted like red citric acid.

I honestly don't think this restaurant makes anything homemade... which would be fine if the prices were in the $5.99 to $6.99 range. But they're not! Try $9.99 to $12.99. Our bill after a miserable dining experience for 2 was over $50.00. Literally the worst $50 I have ever spent in a restaurant.

I walked away feeling as if I had just been conned or something. This establishment clearly has zero pride in the product that they are putting out, and has cut every possible corner they can think of to minimize costs and maximize profit. I honeslt don't know how they can possibly stay in business!?!?

Needless to say I will not be returning to this place and I will be discouraging friends from going. If you want some good, reasonably priced pasta in a family-friendly atmosphere try Pastini Pastaria instead.

I really wanted to like this place, have passed by it basically every day for about two years, last night I finally decided to give the place a try. We got there at 6:00 p.m. and there was hardly anyone there and STILL we had to wait quite a while to be seated. When our waitress finally arrived she didn't seem in the greatest mood and our food took a good 20 minutes to arrive. The antipasti was just ok, the salad consisted of lots of lettuce, one cherry tomato split in two and a few purple onion slivers. Don't even get me started on the minestrone....WORST minestrone I've ever had. Main courses were ok, not much to say about them except that. Overall, the service killed this experience off the bat. Who wants to eat somewhere where they make you feel like your business isn't needed? First impressions are hard to overcome, and this one certainly wasn't a great one.

Cons: Mediocre food for too much $

Denicolas serves Americanized-Italian (A.K.A greasy, salty, junk food), with a tourist trap ambiance. The house wine smells and tastes like watered-down vinegar and at $14.00 for a 1/2 liter of red, it is more expensive than most bottled Willamette valley wines. They use the typical tricks like fake cheese in the ravioli, nickle & diming customers by selling entres a la cart, mixing Thousand Island with Ranch and calling it "Blue Cheese" dressing. Being this cheap makes one wonder what they do with the uneaten antipastos. Anyone who has bought pasta at the supermarket and cooked dinner for their family will leave De nicolas feeling like they were just served a production meal at a 1000% percent mark-up... because they were. Like Portland Nona Emilias, De nicoals will go out business for treating their customers like suckers, and good riddance. Bottom line: mediocre dinner for two with 15% tip= $58.00!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was literally the worst pizza ever had and I have a hard time saying that pizza is bad. Let's face it, it is pretty hard to go so bad with pizza that consuming it is a challenge. 95% of this pizza was a really thick & tasteless crust, similar to cardboard. It looked more like a bread bowl than pizza. The toppings and sauce were minimal. The only few toppings that were present were the only good part of the pizza. I would not recommend this pizza to anyone. It is not a true resemblance to a real Italian pizza.

So where do i begin.....

We had reserved their "banquit room" one month before my friends baby shower.
We searched the place by location, and being the closest pizza place with a party room, we booked it.
We even visited the resturant a week before to check it out. The room was complete with
wood panneling, an ugle mural from the late 80's, flimsy chairs from close to the same time
era, and not well lit or heated. We laughed about it at the time and decided to be optimistic
about the occasion rather than the location.

SO TODAY:

We arrived with mommy to be, presents, cake, decorations, the works.
The first thing we saw was the owner who had to unlock the door to let us in at 4:00pm
Keep in mind that I arrived with three women in their mid twenties and a first time mommy
who is due any day now. Im sure we were sterotyped for our age.

So first the owner made it a big deal for us to use the back door closest to the car to
haul in our baby gear. Before we could even start decorating she started NOT by complimenting
or congradulating the mommy but by asking us how many people we were expecting. Our group size
had shrunk since we made the reservation-like most ofen do. She did not appreciate this and showed it well.
ROLLED HER EYES, TALKED ABOUT IT TO OTHER WORKERS IN THE NEXT ROOM WHERE WE
COULD EASIALLY HEAR, SAID TO US SHE WISHED WE WOULD HAVE TOLD HER EARLIER B/C THEY ALSO HAD A LARGE
GROUP COMING THAT COULD HAVE USED THIS ROOM. ECT..
At the time we heard her talking about us we deceided to close the doors deviding the room. To keep the happy
atmosphere in and the bad out. At which point she returned concerningly asking if this was a "surprise party!?"
When we said no, she said "oh, then it would be good if we could leave these doors open".

If this other groups event was so important they should have booked earlier! What concern of mine is
someone elses resurvation?! We were there to celebrate a new baby, we had planned games, and gifts, and cake-the works.
After such lame service from the start we decided we were DONE HERE....

The waitress(who was the only nice person here and probably deserves a better job)
came to take our order. Once we informed her of our dissapointment she tried to apologize for
the owners behavior, stating that shes had a "Really bad day". After she left the crazy biotch
comes back AGAIN. At this point we were done seeing her face. She tried to act sorry, but only made
things worse for mommy to be who felt totally disrespected. This was also when she said "Oh, i didnt
know you were the mom!"

Shortly after this we left with a to-go pizza only to tip the waitress. Did i mention in the short
time we were there someone else was also complaining about the service. I was so amazed at the level
of service from the owner who should be top notch with friendlyness.

OVERALL: HORRRIBLE SERVICE
OLD, UGLY BUILDING
FOOD-NOTHING SPECIAL.
If it were not for my friends tollerance(mommy) for the horrible service, i would have snapped.
They are lucky I was not the pregnant one. OH, there would have been quite a scene.....

The food and the people are AMAZING. Raised in NJ and having an Italian family creates certain expectations in italian dining, and Denicolas exceeds those expectations. Their italian sausage (spicey!) is to die for, but their meatballs come in a close second. I have been eating there for about 2 years now, and all my family calls this restaurant a Portland favorite. Want a special treat?? Try the mezza mezza sauce. Aslo consider sampling their baked tortellini, which is cheesy and perfectly baked. My biggest peeve is that salad does not come with your meal ($2 extra) but it is worth it if you order it with their homemade pesto dressing!! This place is authentic, run by a 2nd and 3rd generations of "the family." The owners grown children and their friends provide excellent service.

For all you whiners, if there is something you don't like TALK TO THE OWNER. They are more than accommodating.

My family and friends enjoy going to this cozy family-run Italian Restaurant in SE Portland. The food is consistently good and the service is friendly. Friends from out of town have requested return visits to which we happily agree.

My family and friends enjoy going to this cozy family-run Italian Restaurant in SE Portland. The food is consistently good and the service is friendly. Friends from out of town have requested return visits to which we happily agree.

After living across the street from this place for months I finally went in and I completely regret not going in sooner. Everything we had was delicious. The meat lasagna was perfect. Just the right amount of sauce and meat and so much delicious cheese. The cheesy garlic bread was amazing. I stuffed myself because it was all so delicious I couldn't stop eating it. My husband had the Tortellini which was also incredibly good. Service was also wonderful. We got everything pretty quickly and our waitress checked on us and made sure we had everything we needed. The place was filling up pretty fast but it didn't get too loud or crowded. We're definitely going to be visiting often. We may even start having takeout once a week.

Seeing all of the great reviews, we expected this place to be good, but it was very dissapointing. It tasted like cafeteria food! The place was huge, but only about 3 people were eating there. I would not reccomend this place.

When we first moved here we started going in and found that the food is not the ONLY reason to go. The staff just make you feel like you are family. The dishes are great and as a treat I always get the Chicken Picatta. The thin crust pizza is one of the best and a great value too. While all places have their "gotchas", you really have to look hard to find any faults here. One thing I wish they had was Shrimp Scampi, but I can definitely see it as a negative to the owners because it would really drive prices up. Good food, great prices, and of course the love that they show you when you walk in and out!

The food was very uninspired. After all the raves about this place was very dispppointed. From the salads to dessert could find no reason to return. The veal parmagana was very disappinting as it was tough. All the sauces tasted the same like from a can or jar. The service was however fair

I love Italian food and I love going out to eat it and making it at home. Unfortunately, my last few visits to this restaurant hasn't been very pleasant. I love it that they offer cheesy garlic bread, regular bread, and antipasto with their food, but I figure for about $10 a plate for just simple Fettucini Alfredo, they can afford to put real Parmesan cheese in the sauce instead of the American Processed Cheese Foods version of Parmesan Cheese. My meal was bland, yet salty, and thus disappointing. Their pizzas, on the other hand are a real treat. I will go there again for their pizza, but I'm not sure if I want to try their other pasta dishes again.

My husband and I have been going here for the last 3 years, and always leave happy. The service is wonderful and the food is straightforward and delicious!! It reminds me of Italian restaurants on the east coast.
1st generation, family owned, good value etc.

Pros: good value, lovely specials, great service, several courses, antipasti plate, booths, large party space, locally owned
Cons: Very busy on weekend dinner nights, not for you if you're looking for a fancy experimental menu.

We were very unhappy with the food quality. The server was not very friendly and actually lied about the freshness of the wine. It wasn't until I insisted a second time that the wine was old that she finally admited she had finished off an old bottle of wine on my glass. They did eventually replace it with a fresh glass that tasted substantially better.

I'm not sure if the red sauce is better than their white, but we will not be returning.

We've been dining with DiNicola's for years now and appreciate the consistency and excellence of the food. I love the idea of support a family-run business here in Portland and can't recommend this restaurant enough.

Pros: Great food; convenient parking; great service

Cons: Wish I could go every day.

I have many memories of going here as a child and their pizza and spaghetti was always so yummy. I went here recently and it was so disappointing. The quality of the food has gone way down and the prices have gone way up. The service was not so great. I thought maybe it was a fluke and asked around. Everyone I know feels the same way! I definitely will not go back.

PROS: Good memories
CONS: Disappointing food and high-priced

The antipasto was small but the fact that they serve it complementary is still nice. The complementary bread was also good including an herbed foccia and french bread with butter. The minestrone soup was probably the worst I've ever had. Bland, oily and full of cabbagge is no my favorite way to start a meal. The salad was delicious with the creamy pesto dressing served with it. The spinach lasgna was a salty but satisfying....very cheesy with a lovely tomato sauce, unfortunatly not alot of spinach. The gnocchi was also great accompanied by a creamy pesto alfredo that was very filling. We had the tirimisu for dessert which was good but the serving was smaller than we had hoped. If you like tirimisu - don't try to share a piece. Overall I enjoyed the meal and there was enough leftovers for lunch the next day. Don't order the soup!!

An evening here is like a trip to Italy. Food is excellent, and portions are generous. Look for a coupon in the paper to cut the cost a bit. Anti-pasto is good, and the salads are a meal in themselves. Pizza is not my favorite, but unique in its crust and style. I recommend the meat lasagna highly If you are really hungry get the cheesy garlic bread and a strawberry Italian soda w/cream. One of my all-time favorites, it has gotten more expensive through the years but never has compromised or been average. A must.

We've been going to DiNicola's for 20+ years and we keep coming back for more. The family atmosphere is just the beginning to a great experience. Love the pizza, anti-pasta, ravioli and so much more. Keep it up!

Great basic Italian food. Huge meatballs! huge proportions! and the cute little antipasta dish is a great starter. You can easily split one dish and get two salads and the antipasta. And the do takeout!

I know both the owners as well as a lot of their family, particularly their granddaughter. They have wonderful service, and excellent food. True Italians! Their son followed closely in their footsteps, opening his own pizza restaurant in downtown Portland, Rocco's. The best pizza in town, in my book!

I'm so glad there are enough of these authentic Italian places left to go to once and awhile. If I was richer I would eat at these places every day, because they are spendier than, say, Izzy's, but they are well worth it. Denicola's Veal Marsala and the Calzone are particularly memorable. They also bottle pasta sauce to take home! Fabulous place.

Pros: Food. Grazzi!!, Ample private booths, Reasonably priced

Cons: Crowded weekends, Limited delivery

This may not be the best places for a fancy dinner or a romantic place to take your sweet heart on his/her birthday or your anniversary, but if you want true, down home, Italian family cooking, this is the place to go and the prices are very reasonable. It's definately worth a stop!
