Re: Shenanigans at the Red Lion Inn

This place is horrible! I was very upset when I left. We were there for dancing/music for a friends birthday and when we got there aboout 1130 the cover was 10$!! The band was some wanna be spice girl type cover band with 3 chicks that were embarrasing to watch! And a little to old to be dancing around like they were 21. So this is what we were to spend 10 dollars on!!! Now of course we could have left but half our group had went in already. So the real go getter was That they stopped charging about 20 minutes after we showed up!!! I was just pissed at this point! Highway Robbery this place. If you are looking for a good time do not go here!!

We really miss going to shenanigans. When they moved they lost all the comforting place to go. We tried it the first year and it felt like a cold ballroom. They ran out of food and the lines were all screwed up. Got told that I was taking to long to decide. We went ever Thanksgiving and Christmas for at least 10 years.

We tried several times to go to their Sunday Champagne brunch but finally gave up. It is overpriced and most of the time the food is cold because the burners are out. The cheese platters are out way to long and if you go closer to noon, the cheese is old and dried out. The service is not that great either; you have to ask all the time for something. My last visit was when friends invited me for my birthday - it sucked big time and after complaining to the person in charge they could care less. We will not return there. Safe your money for a better place.

This place has pretty good food but it??s not easy to find. The prices are good for the food that you get. I recommend this place if you are looking for good seafood for a cheap price.

I just went to a conference at the Red Lion Hotel in Portland where this restaurant is located. It is a unique restaurant with different sections that are suited well for different types of events. There were tables that overlooked the water and were good for a business meeting. Then there was an open buffet area (and the breakfast buffet was great- the food was good and a nice selection too). There is also a bar area where you can have appetizers and the view is spectacular- especially at night. If you are in this hotel for an event the restaurant is very nice to enjoy also!

Just attended a conference at the Red Lion (where this Shenanigan's is) and ate there 3X. The views are incredible - if possible try to get a window seat overlooking the river in to Washington state. View is better by day than night.

The breakfast buffet was decent. Lunch items were all delicious. Again they had a buffet and all the items, except for one of the meats, were excellent. One meat dish (I forget which) was a bit tough, but I sampled about 7-8 other great items. Service was a bit off at lunch - since I was there as part of a conference they didn't seem prepared with enough servers. We tried a few appetizers instead of a full dinner, mainly there to enjoy the view. Appetizers were all fine.

Basically a good choice if you're at the hotel - especially if there when you can get a window seat.

This place is hard to find, and not near anywhere else in town - but worth the trip. I have only been there for Sunday brunch and a couple of private events. The private events were held in their own dining room - totally separate from the regular customers. I liked that. The food is good, watching the river relaxing. If you are going for brunch, be prepared to wait.

We??d seen Shenanigans?? ads touting their fabulous Thanksgiving Day Buffet ?? what a mistake!

Because of their great view, we gave it a try. Boy, are we sorry!

When we arrived at 5:00 pm, the surly host (decked out in a $1,000 custom made suit, custom shoes and expensive watch) tried to stuff us in the back until we pointed out we??d made a reservation and had been promised a ??window table? which we go, in the north corner.

Starting off at the appetizer table, we found slices of dried out, curled cheese, warm and wilted salads and stale bread ?? in all far less than appetizing ?? perhaps dangerous if the dressing had ??turned? while warm.

The hot food buffet looked and tasted as if it had been set out in the chafing dishes at 10:00 am and had never been refreshed. The vegetables were cooked to mush that strained itself through the fork. At the ??carving station?, the fellow gave us one, small slice of turkey; admonishing us to come back for another. It was so dried out and tasteless, we didn??t bother.

We asked the host if they intended to ??freshen? their offerings; a suggestion to which he took great offense.

The good part: we didn??t stuff ourselves. They promoted their Christmas Day Buffet; we declined ?? and went to Shilo Airport??s (see review) instead.

Pros: Nice view of the Columbia River

Cons: Worst buffet in the city

I took my family there on Christmas day and I have never been so dissapointed in a restaurant in my life. First of all, NO ONE told us you had to pay for each drink separately. Secondly, I was under the impression that it was a "BRUNCH" which I thought meant breakfast and lunch combined. Where was the breakfast food??? They served mashed potatoes that you couldn't even use as wall papaer paste as they were too hard. Unfortunately, I did not pay attention to the price of the dinner and we were almost home when I realized they charged me an adult price for my 8 year old grandson. This is so very wrong. I will never ever eat there again nor will my family or friends that were also there. What happened to the "olden days" when the food was good??

DO NOT EAT HERE!! Unless you enjoy bad food and don't mind paying double for it, by all means eat here.
I have never ever in my life been so frustrated with a restaurant!

The service was okay but the food may have looked good but tasted horrible! I was not satisfied at all and they charge $27 a person, could've gone to Shari's down the street and the food would have been better! Not only that, I was charged DOUBLE for the meal of 7 people!! I called in to file a complaint with the restaurant and the girl who answered the phone said that all day she had received phone calls regarding a double charge under the restaurant's name, not a good way of keeping customers if they're going to continue doing that. I am extremely disgusted with their way of doing business and they are not being helpful at all. I am going to file for a dispute.

I took my family to Shenanigans on Hayden Island, for Easter Sunday. Thinking that it would be convenient for everyone to arrive and have a nice brunch and visit. I have not been to Shenanigans since the move from Swam Island. It would be a GREAT change in pace. We arrived on time and found out that the seating for the brunch was running late, about 30 minutes. Well OK, we could deal with that. Thirty minutes goes by and did another check-in, the answer was very vague. At this point it was apparent that the staff was very unorganized. Waited another 20 minutes and checked in again, finally some progress, we were seated. While walking to our table we had notice the main coarse and at a distance looked good. So we gathered our plates and headed to the salad tables and then onto the main coarse. Finding that what looked good at a distance was not so good dishing it up. The choices of food were less than what we had seen while going to the table. We dished up what we could and started to compared notes amoung ourselves. At first I thought that it was just me, everyone had the same thoughts. That the food was not being replaced with like food, it was being replaced with what was in the kitchen. Turned out to limit your choices of food, this was at 1:30pm in the afternoon. Knowing that the bunch was advertised to run until 2:30pm, what gives? After our discussion at the table had started we also observed the quality of food available. The quality was much less than expected for this highly advertised brunch, we paid $29.00 per person. THIS SUNDAY BRUNCH WAS VERY MUCH A DISAPOINTMENT IN PORTLAND DINING.

A large group of us went to Shenanigans for dinner and later to their lounge Tuxedo Charlies. It was my mom's 65th birthday. We have not had such a good time together for a long time. The staff was very attentive to all our needs, they even had the DJ shout out a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" to my mom. We'll be back for Easter & Mother's Day

We use to come to Shenanigan's on Swan Island, and thought they were no longer around, but a friend said they are literally hidden in the Red Lion Hotel at Jantzen Beach. Sure enough there was Paul at the front desk, and sure enough there was the same great spread we enjoyed several years ago. There's a new Chef on board in the last year, and they put on a great spread. From the crab legs and poached whole salmon, my favorites to the wife's omlette, made to order, with all of the hot entrees, I think there are 19 total. Then on top of that the waffles are to die for, with like five different toppings. The desserts are good, as if we had room for sweets, but really in this economic times, its good to see the quality is there and really the value. I'm going to get the word out on this Portland favorite. We came back a week later for lunch and they had a very reasonable and really tasty luncheon buffet. Not too big and not to pricey for around $12 you can really get some great eats. If you ever ate at Shenanigan's on Swan Island, know they are still around and still got the good food.

In the past I have been a couple of times at SHENANIGANS because friends wanted to go and I was never really impressed. In my opinion this place is way overprices and the food and service is not that great. But my birthday visit on 02/15 for Sunday brunch the worst experience I have ever had!
I arrived about 12.00 PM and the brunch was pretty well attended because they had a group in the hotel which I thought was a good sign because it should mean maybe that the food turnover will be quick and the food will be fresh etc. The opposite was the case. The food was cold, the burners were out at several stations and the fruit, cheese and cracker platter was pathetic. The cheese had been dried out which seems to me it had been out since A LONG TIME and the cracker had been stale. How can that be??
I brought this matter to the attention of the person in charge and she said she was taking care of the cold food. When I left, after I paid the full price and got asked to come back. How awful is that, the meal was awful, I told them about my bad birthday experience and they asked me to come back?? I also contacted afterwards the restaurant in writing but nobody could care less. I can only advise everybody not to go there. It is not worth your money and your time.

We have had many meals at Shenanigans at the request of our mother. The food is always flavorless and lukewarm. If you're an adventuresome sort, their Sunday brunch is exceptionally bad. The food was generic, out of a can or bag and the wait staff seems to have other issues than tending to their customers. The items on the brunch menu frequently run out, at any one time there is never a complete selection, this item or that is has run out and it takes at least 15-20 minutes to be replenished. A glass of water was spilled near our table and it took them 20 minutes to clean it up-everyone walking to the buffet area was crunching over ice and slushy carpet. This place can NEVER be recommended. Unless you have a relative your trying to please by giving them their choice and are absent of tastebuds save your dining dollars and go anywhere else.

Pros: The chair are comfortable.

Cons: Poor food, poor service and a hash-house enviroment in an psuedo-elegant setting.

.

I'd call it pseudo-upscale. It is a lovely restaurant with great views. But the food is mediocre (or really horrible considering it is so expensive), the waitstaff was pleasant but inefficient and bumbly forgetting one person's order entirely and bringing a steak that was well-done instead of medium-rare. And personally, my meal was okay.

Our company (about 20 of us) went there for our Christmas dinner. Even though my boss knew the owners, and there were only three other tables in the restaurant, we still had a less than ideal experience.

In these tough times, there are so many better places to spend your money on a truly nice meal (for example the chart house or merriwethers- which cost about the same).

Given the current

My mother and I stopped in at the Shenanigans in Jantzen Beach for lunch. We browsed the menu, but agreed that the menu was overpriced. For example, the bowl of cantaloupe was $9.00. We chose the lunch buffet, listed at $10.50.
The buffet itself was pathetic to look at, set off to the side of the hallway and completely unattended. A lump of ham sat below a lamp of some kind, supposedly keeping the meat warm but not doing the job. There were about 5 covered trays of food that was lukewarm at best. The burners were not lit, and the food was almost room temperature.
We nevertheless decided to try the food and sampled the BBQ ribs, pulled pork, fried chicken, scalloped potatos and 'chef's vegetables.' The ribs were slathered in a sauce that was so spicy, we immediately lunged for our drinks before tossing the rest aside. The rib meat itself was tasteless, it was only the burning hot sauce. Next, the scalloped potatos that I could have made out of a Betty Crocker instant potato kit. The fried chicken was cold and tasteless, and the vegetables were raw and unpalatable. The only dish worth sampling, despite being cold, was the pulled pork but at this point we were both so disgusted, we had shoved our plates away.
During all of this, the lone waiter did not once ask us if our food was all right, if we needed more to drink, or mention a thing about our barely touched plates when he cleared them.
We went to the counter to pay and asked to speak with the chef who we explained our experience to. He sent the waiter over to the buffet when we mentioned the cold food and he announced the burners weren't on. He apologized, but did not offer to fetch the manager or offer to refund our money. The waiter then brought us our ticket, and they were still charging us $21. We asked why we should have to pay full price when we ate $3 worth of food, and he took $10.50 off the reciept.
I don't think we should have had to pay anything for that meal. It was terrible!

First of all, my friend the bday girl left messeges for over a week trying to reserve the VIP area in the dance floor. Finally the night of our event, someone returned her call at 7:30pm. She had already conveyed to them that we had dinner reservations somewhere at 8pm. HELLOOOO??!! They would NOT accept her credit card over the phone to hold the VIP area and demanded that she come down and give them $100 cash if we still wanted the VIP area held. We bagged it and went to dinner.
After dinner we went to Tuxedo Charlies where bday wanted to simply touch base with the person whom she spoke to on the phone. The was first refused to be allowed to speak to the manager, then chewed out because she was "clearly instructed" to come and pay $100 cash in person to get the VIP area.....which ended up being double booked that night anyways!!!!
After being there for a while, the waitress who took my credit card so I could have an open tab seemed to have disappeared, so we went up to the bar and when the bartender asked what I wanted, I said I was wondering where my card was cause I have a running tab and cannot find the server. The bartender scrunched up her face at me and snapped back, "I aint got your card. I don't know where your card is..." and turned her back to me before I could get a drink order.
We were a party of 10 last night and will be advising everyone we know NOT to go here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pros: Location and good dance music.

Cons: The waitstaff and service!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.

great view and great food ! had stuffed halibut and it was delicious. service was lacking though and it took me 15 minutes to be seated , not good considering it was not busy. no hostess and no manager could be found when I asked to talk to one. got food before i got my drinks. great food but service needs help.

Have eaten here twice; food seems OK but the service is very very slow. On the other hand, the dance floor in adjacent Tuxedo Charley's is the best in town, and if you're there on a Saturday night and they have the GOOD DJ working, it's a great scene.

The veiw was so wonderful, both the restaurant and the lady sitting across from me. The food was excellent and we were seated as soon as we walked through the door. the atmosphere was very romantic with low surrounding light and table candles. We both had the buffet salad which was overstuffed with variety, and the penne pasta chicken which was slightly spicy but very delicous. The waitress was very polite and made sure that our dinner was a night to remember. I have never been to a better restaurant ever!

For the guy who is griping. Well of course you are going to be dissapointed... try doing something for your mom that others are not doing on that day, like make her breakfast.

What a huge disappointment! We took our mom here for Mother's Day Brunch. We thought we had reservations, (we did) BUT..still ended up waiting in a huge line just to get in the door. It felt like a cattle-call. The so-called brunch was held in a cavernous ball room and the tables actually (I'm not kidding) were numbered! We joked that we wondered who the guest speaker was as it felt like a convention. The food was just okay, and many of the so-called entrees were empty. When we finally made it through the food line, most of the breakfast items were gone. What a joke. I think this must have been clueless person's idea of a big money-maker, as it cost us $30 a person to suffer through this indignity. PLEASE do yourself AND your mom a big favor. Take here some place nice. This was not it.

We went here for Easter brunch but ended up only eating desert because there was a huge line 30 min long to get any other food. The set up of the buffet was terrible and there was way to many people and not many food choices. Our server was so nice though she said was so embarrased by the horrble set up. We asked to speak to the manager and he said that he couldn't do anything it's easter, but what does it being easter have to do with theiriycky buffet? We had to wait 30min to be seated and we had reservations!Don't go here it's not worth $26/person.

After reading some of the other reviews, we almost didn't go. However, since we had a nice gift certificate, we thought we'd take a chance....and am I glad we did!!! We were so impressed with everything! The service was wonderful, and the food even better! I'm ready to go back tomorrow!

We chose the new location at the Red lion Jantzen Beach for my 40th Birthday. The table service was ok but the Managers at the front desk were very rude! Food was served cold and we didn't see are waitress until it was time to clear the plates. I wrote a letter to the owner about these issues and received NO RESPONSE! This indicates to me that they are not very concerenced about keeping their customers happy! Do not recommend at all!

Went to the new place on the Columbia River. Only one other dinning party was there and it still took one hour to even get some bread. We did not have any drinks but water and just waiting. I asked if I could get a piece of Halibut blackened, she looked at me as if I was crazy. She asked "you mean grilled?" I said no, made with blackening seasoning. She went and asked the chef and said yes. It had no blackening seasoning and way over cooked, it was all I could do to cut it. Only to match my wife's cold steak. It took a half hour after finishing our salad to even get our plates removed.
Extremely slow and incompetent service only to be topped by extreme overprices.
We will never go back!

Despite a location move and some previous negative reviews, my wife wanted a brunch for her birthday and Shenanigans came to mind. It was a risk WELL WORTH TAKING. For you fans of the old Shenanigans- it's back, bigger and better than ever! The food stations are more accessible, the entrees and dessert more plentiful, and the mainstays of the past (Namely, the fresh seafood) have been preserved. Two things which are a welcome change from the old location are the space of the brunch area and the INCREDIBLE view. Champagne, Crablegs, and 747s flying over the Columbia while jetboats scurry by... it had a very Seattle vibe. For those of you who haven't been, please go, and for those of you (like us) unsure of the new location, it's the same in many ways and much better in ambience!

We made reservations for a group of 10 a couple weeks before Easter for brunch. When we arrived it was difficult to find a parking spot at the new Columbia River Shenanigans. When we got inside we found out why. They were seating groups of 5 or less in the resturant. All others were seated in the Ballroom. What a disappointment and why were we not told in advance when making reservations. The food was cold, deserts still frozen. The staff obviously temps for the weekend as no one really seemed to know what was going on. Fooled us once, but never again!

As a frequent customer to Shenanigans, I was initially impressed with their brunch variety (American, Mexican, Seafood, Lamb / Bad Sushi), however as of late their food and especially their service has lacking. Their service is much like their website, sub-par.

On a beautiful sunny morning / afternoon the view is spectacular. Because this restaurant is located in the industrial section of Portland, the plants and factories that can be seen in the distance is not always best.

Overall Shenanigans is a nice place for big groups (who can afford the $20 a person price tag) for both brunch and happy hour. It can be romantic for the ever personable couples since the atmosphere is rather quaint. However, even with all of those intangibles, they are still an up-and-down establishment when it comes to quality food and service.

I am not from Portland and do alot of searching on the net to see where to dine. I chose Shenanigans from it's menu. I thought it would be a great place to celebrate my anniversary. Shenanigan's has a wide varity of foods, Pasta, seafood, steaks. I was impressed by the resturant, the waiter, the food and the view. I will most definatly be back here again. I urge you to try it and I know you wont be sorry. A+

This place is run down. The only redeeming thing is their happy hour. Good price on drinks and $2 menu is a great value, and the free munchies are acceptable. The dining room, however, is not great during busy hours. I could hardly hear the people at my table over the crashing of dirty plates being dumped in tubs right in front of my table. The plates and silverware need to be replaced, all appear very overused. The banquet rooms are the last place to have a wedding reception. The curtains are circa 1980, very dirty and falling off the window hangers. Wallpaper is old, etc. Shenanigans could do a lot better if they tried a little. The potential is there.

My family went for Sunday Brunch. Bacon and potatos were stale, eggs were runny and seafood overcooked. Usually cheese is pre-cut this had huge of cheese to cut yourself sitting there no ice to keep cool. The Brie cheese was melted and the rest of the cheese was soft. Pies were sitting no ice to keep cool they were warm and nasty. Butter was smashed under my chair and electrical wires haging out the the heaters. Orange juice was not served and the glasses were child size so 1 sip and glass was empty. We had reservations but were told that to wait for a table. Host was not customer service oriented. We ended up with 2 tables and could not move them together. I thought that is what reservations were for? overall I was very unhappy and will never eat there again along with the rest of my family.

Went on Mother's Day. This place must rely upon first timers as not many would experience the complete lack of service, poor buffet selection, etc and come back again. It started with the 1/2 hour wait to be seated, after our reservation time, the 10-15 min. wait to get a waffle and several 5 min. waits for clean plates. I had to get up and serve water and coffee for my guests. All thisa for $22.00 and then they have the nerve to write in a 15% gratuity!!! Thanks but no thanks. The worst buffet I've ever been to at any price. If their regular service is this poor its a wonder they're still in business.....

Reservation one week ahead of Silver anniversary. Came on time (even early), dressed to the nines. Seated by server station and big table for boisterous company Christmas party. Waited half hour for appetizer, drinking our watered mai tais. Appetizer was good: six crab-stuffed mushrooms, $1.50 each. Stood twenty minutes for salad bar. Mediocre salad, worse soup. Prime rib not cooked to specifications, baked potato not offered. Ambience good if you enjoy watching harried servers hustle around, stopping often to bicker. Don't get too attached to any one waiter; we got shuffled between three. Dessert tray had several different cheesecakes; the one chocolate thing was a vanishingly small serving of torte. We bypassed that, and said "cheque, please". First water refill came while we waited twenty minutes or so for that cheque. What the cheque lacked in immediacy it more than made up for in size.
