So the best thing about a pot pie is the flaky delicious pastry. They MICROWAVED it. It was soggy and rubbery.

The halibut on the fish and chips was so grossly overcooked that it had the consistency of chicken. I still don't believe my husband that it really was halibut.

Coleslaw definitely Reser's.

Men's bathroom without soap. Hope the servers and cooks take the extra time to go wash hands elsewhere after using the toilet.

Looks great to party at. Felt like a sucker for eating there.

Pros: great beer list, looks like fun to drink there

Cons: We had to pay $40 for that food? I feel like a sucker

I used to love this bar, it was a fun place to go and get a couple beers with some friends and catch up. Recently though things seem to have changed. I don't know if they suddenly decided they didn't need to treat customers well now or something but I (and the 20 people we were with) were all treated absolutely like trash.

It was a friend of mine's 23rd birthday and we hadn't even been there for 20 minutes when we were chastised for singing, the happy birthday song!!! The waitress, who had already ignored us for 15 minutes, literally told us "that'll be enough of that." Really?

Needless to say we got our bill (at least those of us that had actually been served drinks) and left our former favorite bar.

I really liked the atmosphere here. The beer selection was great! The food was really goo too. I had the fish and chips. They only thing they could improve on is there service. Our waitress was not terrible but she was slow and ditzy.

This bar used to be an amazing local hangout but apparently the Hipster Weekly News letter did a story on this place because now it's mostly filled with 20-something hipsters trying painfully hard to look cool yet unimpressed. Still the ambience, beer list and food is great. Just be prepared for guys in skinny jeans, retro clothing from designer boutiques and young kids looking sullen. I know I sound like an old fart here but I wish this place would have stayed a hidden locals hangout.

Have been loving this place for a long time! The very best rotating beer selection in town and my personal favorite fish and chips ever! perfectly cooked with cool slaw and big fat potato wedges..YUM. The people that work there are super friendly and work hard at making sure that you are having a good experience, it does get busy on the weekends and the service lags a bit but that because they have 1 too few wait staff on the floor for the number of chairs they need , so you must be patient but will be rewarded with an excellent beer.

Upon entering the Horse Ass for my first time I had a good vibe and was admiring the English Themed neighborhood bar. I stood at the entrance or lobby area for good bit before I realized I haven't even heard a hello. That is when the obviously disgruntled employees come in to play, the whole ordering food and drink part where they are required to be friendly is certainly not a skill sought by management.
We had a large group on a Monday night and were in good spirits. A little loud at times and a lot of laughs. Never once did the staff ask what was the gathering for or anything that you would expect from a neighborhood bar. We did get evil stares from the barkeeps and the regulars too. Regulars? They regularly keep good money out of any establishment. One happened to scream f*** you to a girl there and this was after he made a sexist remark.
Total lame place. Don't go and waste your time. Hey, unless you do not like tipping, they prefer you don't tip.

Cool atmosphere but horrible service! If you don't mind getting an eye roll every time you ask or order something this is the place for you. Majority of the people who work here seem like they hate there job and they are going to punish you for it. Our waitress was rude to us all night and we observed her doing the same to other customers. The employee's were very snotty too. When we left we told them we would not be returning and one of the staff members told us to F*ck off! How's that for service? So we just went down the street to the Triple Nickel where they were happy to give us great and friendly service. Don't waste your time at the Horse Brass. There are plenty of other bars in Portland that know something about service.

The decline of this once fine establishment is a well know story to many of us in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the original owner who made this pub an institution is no longer able to manage his treasure as closely as he once could. The "stand in" managements' affects can be seen rather graphically in the many recent negative reviews. I will let those speak for themselves.

P.S. After popping my head in and seeing the condition of the kitchen, I do not know if I can ever eat there again. Too bad, they still have the best fish and chips in town.

I went here as a first timer Friday night for a friend of mines 28th birthday. We wanted to sit down with our friends at the long table they were sitting at, but there were 2 ladies sitting at the end and we were waiting for them to finish.
So, my 3 friends that I brought with me and I, were patiently waiting, and had to stand. It is a bar, right?
A very pretty server with black wavy hair and an arm of tattoos came over to us and told us that we were blocking a high traffic area and that we needed to sit down or move. But she didn't stop there, she rudely continued on, that they were probably at max capacity and should start kicking people out. (not our fault)

Our group apologized and moved to the side as best we could, out of the way. About 5 minutes later, she came up to us again and yelled in my face that we needed to move, sit down, or get out! It is a very noisy bar and the music was loud, so I leaned in to her to tell her that the 2 ladies at our friends table were just paying their tab and we were going to take their seats as soon as they left, when she suddenly reaches out and GRABS MY ARM, PUSHES ME backward and YELLS in my face that I don't need to talk to her like that and if I couldn't find a place to sit then I would need to get the f* out of there!!! I am a 5'1", very petite female. There is absolutely NO WAY I could possibly be threatening to her.
She let go of me and walked away, as I stood there in PURE SHOCK as did my friends who just witnessed the most atrocious spectacle and behavior from a "SERVER" ever.

I didn't want to cause a scene because it was my friends birthday, so I was trying to disregard what had just happened, but my other friend was so mad, she went to speak to a manager. He only agreed with her that the way his server treated a customer was not appropriate and asked if there was anything he could do. She said, "ya, buy our first round of beers." To which he agreed to do, but never did.

About 20 minutes later, we found a different table, not even near where we were before and I was standing next to it, God forbid I ever stand, and the same server that grabbed me and pushed me, passed by and gave another rude and underhanded comment on how "it must be really hard to find a seat."

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!!?

That was it for me. I will never go back there ever and I will yell from the rooftops about what a HORRIBLE business Horse Brass Pub is. They better get rid of that girl because she is driving business away. You can't work in the service industry if you can't be polite to your customers. I was a server for 5 years and a bartender for 3 and yes, it gets busy sometimes, yes, it not fun sometimes...but you buck up and deal with it. You don't EVER TOUCH SOMEONE! EVER! That girl must live a very sad and lonely life to be taking her anger out on innocent people and I hope she gets the help she needs.

(The person that ended up being our server, who was a male with glasses, was very nice and considerate)

We haven't been to the Horse Brass in a year due to a bad case of botulism caused by unclean beer lines. 6 out of 8 people in our group had gotten extremely ill - the only 2 people who didn't get sick *only* had bottled cider. All beer drinkers became very ill after 1-2 beers.

We were finally convinced to return as we had heard the place had been cleaned up. While it may have been cleaned, the wait staff was downright rude from the moment we sat down.

Our friends who had arrived earlier commented how rude she had been to them after they arrived (before us), and so did the table next to us! I was a little annoyed with her service, but was willing to let it slide before she began arguing with my husband.

When she realized my husband was only ordering bottled beers, she asked why. He told her it was due to the previous experience, but had heard they were better and wanted to try again as he loved their selection. He then ordered his second beer for the evening, a draft beer (not bottled), as a sign of good faith. She then argued once with him, left, and then came back just to argue again.

I can deal with her disagreeing once with him, but returning only for the sake of disagreeing with a customer is horrible service.

We tried to give it a yet another chance, but we won't bother going back ever again. This was the first time in my life I've ever tipped below 20%.

I have been to this bar numerous times. The beer selection is wonderful.

What's not wonderful are the arrogant staff. As others have noted: it can be difficult to get their attention. When you do they are still often slow, inaccurate and downright rude.

And lets face it, the food here is horrible. I was served a sandwhich with mold on the rye bread once, and suffered through a few other terrible offerings before giving up.

With the smoking ban now in place this bar will have to change. They've lost the attraction they held for many as one of Portlands best cigar and pipe friendly bars.

Lets hope that they replace many of the watiresses and upgrade the menu so that the brilliance of the beer selection can fully shine.

Until then consider Green Dragon just down the street on Belmont (just as many beer selections, no attitude) or if you are craving the English atmposphere The Moon & Sixpence in the hollywood district (the real Brit-expat gathering place). Either is a far better choice for a nice draught or two.

I was very happy to discover the horse brass pub when I moved out here. Otherwise I would have gone through scotch egg withdrawal. They aren't as good as the ones I've had in other places but at least they have them. Their selection of beverages is decent. The place has some of the dark pub atmosphere. Prices are typical of pubs in the portland area.

My husband discovered this pub years ago and it immediately became a favorite. The selection of beers, both alcoholic and non is great, the British pub lunches are excellent...I especially like their Scotch eggs...and the atmosphere is always friendly.

I have been going to the Horse Brass for about 4 years now. As a non-smoker, the atmosphere was always a turn off, but I braved it because of the great food. Now that the New Year has passed, the Horse Brass is thankfully smoke-free. Although there were no active smokers, the place still smells pretty badly of smoke. However, it is now a much more enjoyable experience.

I had breakfast at the Horse Brass for the first time and it was great. The full English breakfast is too large for one person, so I suggest splitting it and possibly supplementing it with extra potatoes and fry bread.

I highly recommend going there for breakfast, lunch or dinner. My favorites are the Fish and Chips, Bangers and Mash, Scotch Egg and the great beer selection. I usually pick a beer from the guest taps, but my favorite standbys are the Chocolate Stout and the Black Cherry Stout. There are many other people who can gush about the great food, but I just want people who may have shied away from the Horse Brass because of the smoke to give it another chance.

Been here a few times and for a few of the times the waitstaff has just been plain lame. If you expect a good tip, deliver great service. It's that simple. Food here is fantastic though. Get yourself a scottish egg, you will not be let down. Come here to play darts, the set's they have are decent you might want to bring your own.

The Horse Brass is probably the smokiest bar I've ever been to, but the beer selection is above average (if only they had Leinenkugel- it would be perfect). The food is typical bar food with the Scotch Egg being the standout. The waitress wasn't good or bad- just average, and a little slow at that. The patrons were anywhere from twenty-somethings to drunken men who couldn't keep their pants up.

Was at the brass last night and normally have such a great time, but last night there were 2 different wait staff that were un-necessarily rude to our group. I've been a server, I know it can be stressful, but being rude to your guests is going to make those guests not want to come back. We had empty beer glasses on our table for over 30 minutes and decided instead of ordering more we would go somewhere else and couldn't even get our check. If they were slammed I would understand, but it was a monday evening. I'lll keep going to the brass, Ill just hope that their service improves to the level of the rest of the place.

My grandfather brought me to the Horse's Brass knowing my passionate love for fish and chips. The atmosphere is pretty neat and very olde world. (I very much appreciated seeing my Welsh and Scottish flags portrayed, too!) We were there right about dinner time, so not many patrons were there. We were helped promptly by a very nice lady who made us feel very welcome. The fish and chips is, by far, the best I have ever had anywhere in the world. Thick, juicy pieces of fish lightly dipped in beer batter with real cut potato fries. I also tried the Crater Lake root beer in a bottle (formerly Mt. Angel), which complimented the fish nicely. The second waitress we had wasn't nearly as nice, but sufficed. The only drawback is that it reeks of smoke. We are practically the last western country who allows smoking in pubs (which should change!) and is a huge drawback. I reeked of smoke and had to wash my clothes and take a shower immediately following dinner as even my hair reeked of cigars and cigarettes. We are both dying to try the full fry up (English breakfast), but don't want to smell like smoke early morning! Maye they do "to go boxes"?

Amazing food!

A wise man once told me that there are a lot of things that make a good Pub great, and a great beer better, but I will share the first few that seem most important. One obviously is the beer itself. The Horse Brass Pub has an impressive selection of drinks from micro breweries located all over the U.S. The beers served were fresh and tasty. The second thing that makes a great Pub is the atmosphere. This place has a one of a kind atmosphere that makes every trip worth looking forward to. The locals are fun and lively, and the servers and bartenders make one feel as though they are a regular every time, which adds to the enjoyment of any beverage or meal. Finally, what makes a great Pub are the stories and good times one has there, and The Horse Brass Pub lives up to that, which makes every visit memorable and delicious.

This place is great, if you can tolerate the smoke. Awesome beers and great food. I wish I lived closer so I could go more often.

Smoky and full of so much cool stuff, get ready for a true pub experience. It is the real thing, a genuine pub experience, and the people are great. Their fish & chips are made from halibut, very good. Also they have some English-style meat pies, all extra special and tasty. Don't eat here if you're watching your weight tho. Open late, when things can get really crazy but the staff keeps just the right amount of sanity. Love the Brass.

The Horse Brass has the best beer selection in town, and probably amongst the best in the whole country. Don't come expecting to the fawned over, pampered, or complimented on your fake Gucci bag and hair product. Come for the beer and the folks, relax, have a scotch egg, fish and chips, good conversations and maybe a nice argument with Don, and KNOW that you will leave reeking of smoke. If that bothers you, please stay home or go visit a Mc Pub somewhere, because this is a smokers pub, and your whining isn't changing that. The place is just great.

The problem with the Horse Brass is the owner wants out, he's getting old, and he's given the place over to an old girlfriend to run. She is abrasive, a control freak and impossible to get long with as she hates everyone. So ofcourse the employees all hate working there, steal, act rude to the customers, and in general act out their frustrations. None of them stay working there very long either. Oh well. Every dog has its day.

Twice now, my English boyfriend and I attempted to sample Horse Brass's full English breakfast on a weekend, which is available (according to their web site) 10 - noon. True enough, unless you get there within those hours! One time we got there just under the wire and were indifferently told it was too late. But it's not twelve yet...? we said. "Yeah, but we have to change the kitchen over." Sigh. The week after, we got there at 11:40. "Yeah sorry, too late," we were (again, very indifferently) told. "They have to change the kitchen over." I responded that perhaps they should state that breakfast ends BEFORE they "need to change the kitchen over." I've worked in plenty of restaurants and understand changing gears between breakfast and lunch, but you serve the damn breakfast until you say you're going to; in fact, wherever I've worked, if someone comes in even slightly AFTER posted hours we let it slide. It's called SERVICE industry. This time, we were very annoyed and i protested. I said it's really misleading to say you serve breakfast til 12 if you're going to shut it down at 11:40. At this point the proprietor chimed in and said, "That's how it's done in England." My English boyfriend scoffed at this and said that that surely did not conform to his recollection. The proprietor was arrogant, supercilious, and completely unlikable. There is no danger of us ever returning.

I went to the Horse Brass to celebrate a friends birthday who is British. When I first walked in I thought the place had potential. I went to the bar making sure not to stand in the waitress station ( I was a bartender on Bourbon St. so I know that really irritates the waitresses), so I found an empty spot at the bar to order from. There was a good crowd but nothing overwhelming especially for a bar on a Friday night. As I waited to get a drink I was looking at the beer list and I saw they had the standard 16oz and Imperial 20oz pints. After deciding on a Rouge Brutal Bitter, I waited patiently for 10 minutes to get a drink as 2 bartenders filled at least 4 orders a piece for the waitresses totally ignoring myself and the others at the bar. Finally the bartender came over and rudely asked "what do you want?" I responded by asking for an Imperial of Brutal Bitter and a vodka cranberry for my girlfriend. Apparently that confused him and he asked me to clarify as I did, I commented that I was surprised that a bartender at an English Pub didn't understand what i meant by "An Imperial" To which he responded well you're in Portland not England. Finally he brought me my STANDARD Pint and then proceeded to fill 3 or 4 more orders for the waitress before coming back to me to ask what else I wanted. After finally getting our drinks I left him an undeserved tip of $2.50 hoping he would recognize me as a decent tipper and keep that in mind when I came back for more drinks. We took our drinks and went to hang out with our friends at their table where we stood and chatted. The table was next to the stairs and even though we weren't blocking them the bouncer continuously and rudely asked us to move away from the stairs. At this point we'd had enough. We said our goodbyes finished our drinks and left for another bar. As i said it was slightly busy but hey . . . that's the bar business and you know what they say "if you can't stand the heat. . . . "

Pros: Good beer selection. An authentic looking Pub

Cons: Horrible staff.

I go here when I want to drink some great beer.
Last time I was in they had some Krak beer from Belguim that was fantastic.
I always stop by when I get a chance just to try something I can't find anywhere else.

I find this is the only English pub in town that has done it right. The food is good (can't say great otherwise they wouldn't be serving British food) the beers are served quickly and cold and it is always hopping.
It is one of the spot we go to and think "Man why hasn't Oregon gone non-smoking" especially as we come home to burn our clothes and shower at 2am to get the stench off. This place would go from above average to merely outstanding!
Another interesting spot as far as people watching goes.

This place is my second home. I love the food (especially the potpies) and large selection of beer. Even when it is busy you can always squeeze in somewhere. My only real complaint is that I am a non-smoker and it can be a bit much at times for me (although in England you would find the same).

late at night is the best time to go. meet the owner don younger. can't miss him with his long gray hair. with luck, you won't be served by the general manager who can spoil a meal. talk about a phony smile. air conditioned with smoke filtering system. go ahead, have a cigarette or a pipe or a cigar. they don't care.

This place is a bit smoky but if you can handle it, the beer selection is second to none. However, what really makes this place stand out as an eating AND drinking establishment is their coronary-inducing scotch egg from hell that puts you in heaven. These things are very addicting, so if you're watching your figure, just have one. If you don't care what you eat as much, just have 6 at the most, seriously. Their halibut and chips is also very good, but if you aren't feeling peckish, this place is ideal for getting your drink on, shooting some darts, and just relaxing after a boring day at work. Typically, once you get your drink on, the scotch egg comes calling. If you answer, it's all over, but you'll love the pleasures true gluttony can bring, and you won't pay for it till the next day.

I've really enjoyed the Horsebrass in the past, but my last experience might just be that: the last. Service was horrible. The server spent half her time standing around and the other half ignoring my attempts to get her attention, snapping at me or making faces.

Service is service and can be touch and go - we all have bad days right? Well, I checked my credit card statement online tonight. Thank goodness I still had my receipt because it ends up the server "tipped" herself an extra $4.00 at my expense - money I did not authorize.

Go at your own risk, but if you do - take cash. I may very well have to change my card #. If the company can charge extra money to my card, who knows what else they are doing with it.

Born and bred in England, I found the Horse Brass to be so familiar when I first walked in a few years ago, and I haven't left yet. Fact of the matter is, my old 'local' back home is actually featured as a picture in the menu (Someset Arms, Glastonbury)!!
The selection is fantastic, and very authentic. The service is not first class, but is probably a true reflection of what you would find in England: polite, friendly, and genuine. Prompt it is not, but that is, in a strange way, part of the appeal. A must see!

Advertised as an English style pub, Horsebrass's real appeal is their extensive selection of import and micro brews that take up three pages. The staff is often knowledgable and can guide you through the menu which humbles the pseudo-connoisseur. Have a bread and cheese plate with it, too, as well as their other food items that seem to get along quite wonderfully with their brewed roommates...ahem, flatmates. Then there's their selection of spirits...

If beer were a religion (some say it is), the Horse Brass is the cathedral. This is a place that cares about good beer. The selection is outstanding, bartenders and patrons are knowledgeable about beer, and the food is OK (fish sandwich is GREAT). Only the cigarette smoke detracts.

I would have thought this building was full of offices or newer, plain apartments, but what a surprise when you step inside, big, lots of tables...we went in the middle of the day, after Christmas, so it was quiet...great variety of beer on tap, helpful bartender (we aren't from Portland so we were asking about different local beers), dark! Stop in here!

I love this place. Unique and a must visit for the uninitiated. A great place to hang out and chat. Tons of beer choices-many of which you can't find elswhere on tap. The staff is friendly, though it can get pretty busy and they can get a bit rushed. When it gets busy, the smoke increases but that's what a bar is. So if you don't like smoky bars, go early and/or during the week Food is okay if you get hungry though I don't recommend eating dinner there. The decor feels very authentic. Play darts. It's for your own good. ENJOY!

Timing is crucial if you want to fully enjoy the brass (like anyplace else, I guess). Best time to go is right after work (around 5 ish) or on sleepy weekend afternoons. If you have sensitive lungs and can't deal with second hand smoke, this advice is pretty important; when the brass gets crowded, the smoke gets pretty thick. However, intrepid tipplers are rewarded with a superior selection of beers. A selection of 4 or so seasonal beers rotate every few weeks in addition to their large regular selection of micros and british imports. Did I mention their nice assortment of single malts? The pub food here is delicious as well. My fave is the scotch egg, a hard boiled egg wrapped in banger sausage, breaded, and baked. It provides sustenance for a good night's worth of "brassing it up".
Mellow after work place indeed.

After reading about the Horse Brass here, I had to stop in for a cold one. I would classify it as a good neighborhood pub with a good selection of beers (including microbrews), but not a place I'd make a special trip for (a little dark inside for my taste). Although I didn't try the food, the bartenders and servers were quite friendly and helped me in my beer choices.

I have to agree with other reviews about the cigarette smoke - I came out smelling like an ashtray.

Several dartboards and video poker for entertainment.

I would have to dissagree with the statement on rating the Horse Brass Pub as # 6 on the best BrewPub. The Horse Brass is my favorite bar in Portland. It is a pub, but it is not a brewpub. No brewing of beer is done at the Horse Brass. I would say they have the best selection of the NW's and the world's best beer on tap. Oh yeah, Try there bangers!
