do not shop here if you don't have to. staff are a bunch of know it all a**holes. not much good inventory unless you want to play 80s music. manager need to grow some cajones and control his staff. all in all worst experience I've ever had in a store. just say no to overpriced, outdated equipment and rude, precocious staff. craigslist flakes are better to deal with then this place - and has better equipment - what a joke.

When buying an instrument I highly recommend Trade Up. They have a wide range of instruments and musical equipment, and at good prices too. The staff is really helpful, and for me, their store is in a easy to-get-to location.

If it wasn't for one thing, I'd give them 5 stars. Don't ever go to them to sell instruments. They'll give you severely much less then what you paid for... At most a fifth to a quarter of the normal price, when the item your selling is in decent or even good condition.
Two guitars that I've bought there and then tried to sell back were:
An electric Ibanez for $250 and was is decent shape. They wanted to give me $40.
A Spanish classical Ibanez I bought for $150 and was in great shape, they wanted to give me $30.

So summed up, go there when looking to buy.
Try another shop, or craigslist when looking to sell.

i just had a terrible experience with the alberta trade-up store and will not return to either trade up locations. I was hoping to trade in an sm57 for a clip on mic, quite a simple process I thought. Within a few minutes, I was called 'dishonest' by the extremely rude employee because the day before he had told me "$40 cash, $50 trade" for the mic. Today he was saying "$35 trade" for some reason . . . I questioned him about this in what I thought was a polite manner, and he had the gall to call me 'dishonest' and that he would not take the trade after all. I thought this was a mis-communication, he made it a personal insult. I will never give another penny to trade up music. Zero Stars, there are too many other good, polite and honest music stores in Portland for me to waste my time being insulted by Trade Up.

This place is great for used musical equipment. The prices are a little high, in my opinion, but they do have a wide selection of guitars, drums, etc. They're very friendly about letting people try out instruments. Their staff wasn't as knowledgable about the keyboards, but their selection was alright (and sort of self-explanatory).

An incredible "in-the know" staff gives you the true grit of what's working best for musicians in Portland. They are always quite able to describe the used drum machine's effects and usages or demonstrate the excellent tonallity of a particular flute. They carry all you need for repairs, perform repairs and host a gamette of musical needs. It feels good to support a Portland small business who deserves it, too.

PROS: Easy to get to and easy to find location
CONS:

Trade up sells used muscial instruments. I purchased a beautiful like new set of Pearl drums there for a very reasonable price. The staff are very friendly and there is a large variety of things there (lots of guitars, drums, bass, amps, especially). Check back often because the inventory changes frequently. Also, if you are trying to sell an instrument you might want to give them a try. I don't know if they offer good prices when buying but I know they buy.
