Nice little cafe on the pier in Astoria. The food is decent, decor is ok, and prices are fair for scenery. The location is the big selling point. Nice local small town atmosphere, I would recommend giving it a try if you are in the area.

Decided to go to Gunderson's based on AAA recommendation. One ordered crab cakes with salad, one ordered fish and chips and one ordered a hamburger with chips. It was a Monday in August, after 2 pm, place half empty and we waited at least 45 minutes for our order. The food seemed overpriced for what we got. We ate at Blackfish Cafe in Lincoln City the night before and very similar items on the menu were about the same or less there and of far higher quality. The hamburger was well prepared but lacked salt; the bun was toasted too hard and made it difficult to chew. The salad with the crab cakes was unwieldy to eat. The cod in the fish and chips was nicely done but the fries were were lukewarm and the coleslaw was flavorless.

Pros: great location

Cons: very slow service, food okay, overpriced by about $2 a dish

We found this restaurant by chance, perched on the edge of the Columbia River just east of the bridge. Since we were early birds for lunch, we were able to sit at the window and watch the river activities, as well as the sea gull who seemed to be a permanent guest on the railing outside. Two of us had the soup and salad lunch, and I must say it was anything but ordinary! The salad was fresh mixed greens with some julienned veggies on top. My husband raved about the herb/garlic dressing on his salad and hopes to be able to recreate it at home! The clam chowder was the best I think I have ever eaten. The soup was so creamy and flavorful! There were plenty of tender clams, and just the right amount of bacon and potato. Our fellow diner had the shrimp/crab cakes and said they were terrific also. I wished we had room for several of the dessert offering, but we left them for another visit!

The Cannery Cafe has excellent food but the proportions are small in comparison to the price that you pay. Waitstaff are a little on the unfriendly side but they are usually busy and shortstaffed. If you want excellent food and don't mind paying for it this is a great place to eat!

We have frequented the Cannery Cafe because of their quality food - from their homemade garlic salad dressing to their large seafood selection as well as meat items. Their desserts are delicious too. It has a great view and that's mainly what you're paying for because there's no dinner under $13. All the seafood dinners are $18+. So many people we've seen there are out for a special occasion. The waitstaff are friendly if few. They also run an adjacent bar/lounge area that has character, but we've never been in. Great place if you're vacationing in Astoria!
