Okay, my definition of a 'dive' bar may be different from anothers...and 'dive' bar might not be something an establishment wants to be known for but I've been here a few times and my husband & I just love it here. It's dark, fabulously

The Alibi charged my bank card and I left cash w/ my server. I asked about getting my money back as they charged me twice. I waited on hold, was not called back, and was pretty much told "too bad". Here's some advice for next time you go

totally nice place to take a date i showed up there last week with my boys and we rocked the mike and got toasty. the drinks were strong and we were the cream of the crop at the show i would give this a 5 but the food was on the expensive side so im knocking down one plus it gets real busy but its not their fault

Pros: heavy shots and selection of karaoke trax

Cons: busy

The dark and dreary, 70s-style tiki lounge would perhaps cause most to walk back out and head for trendier waters. Those willing to take a few more steps past the bar and up the stairs to the back room, would be happily greeted by tipsy, fun-loving, karaoke-heads singing (and screaming) their favorite karaoke tunes. The crowd? Almost 100% 20 and 30 year olds, although their song repertoire would suggest older souls. Barry Manilow, Beach Boys, Peter Gabriel were among the artists who were paid homage with performances that often included passionate jumping! The KJ (whose name escapes me) was thoroughly enthused as he called performers up to the stage. Later in the evening, he did a throwback to Meat Loaf during a down time. "And I would do anything for love, but I won't do that..." he sang with most of the crowd singing along. Sunday night at the Alibi, I give it a 4 star rating for great atmosphere, great happy hour and a top-notch KJ. A rating less than perfect because I'm not convinced that older singers would enjoy their time and importantly, the karaoke section of the bar is not wheelchair accessible.

This is one of my all-time favorite bars. You really feel like you're in Las Vegas here. The tropical drinks are pricey, but worth it, and there's usually a small buffet of free food on weekend nights. I don't know if I'd eat the food (I've seen meatballs a few times), but it's a nice touch. Great kareoke, too!

This place needs no explaining, just a great old tiki bar. The outside is as interesting as the interior. Crazy drinks and even crazier kareoke. One of the darkest bars in town

This is a neat place. I think it is the closest thing to an authentic Tiki bar since Trader Vics closed. They have good Karaoke, the drinks are great and not over priced.

The Alibi is a great place to come to just have a good time. Unlike a lot of other bars, it doesn't possess the meat market atmosphere, and I've yet to see any fights, arguments, etc- so it's a nice place to go if you want to avoid drama. The atmosphere is great: there are several separate rooms to sit in, so if you're not into karaoke and you just want to chat and hang out with your friends, you can.

I love karaoke here. If you want to hear good singers, though, this is NOT the place to go. Most of the people who get up to sing goof off and don't take it seriously. I love to sing, and the Alibi totally has me covered with a HUGE selection of songs (more than I've seen at any other karaoke bars in Portland or Vancouver). Erin, the KJ, is really friendly and quick, so even if she has a ton of singers you can plan on singing. She's awesome!

The drinks are a little weak and overpriced, so order beer or a straight shot- stay away from their selection of fruity tropical drinks.

On saturday nights they have a free buffet, which is actually really good!

This place can be really crowded, especially in the karaoke area, and sometimes its hard to find a place to sit. The waiters are a little slow, too, but they have a lot of customers so cut them some slack.

The bar has a fun tiki theme and the karaoke 7 days a week is always a blast. But the service is always a bit slow and the drinks are a bit overpriced. Fun place to have a party though.

I can?t vouch for their food but this was a cool place to Karaoke! You can?t miss their sign right off Interstate as the sign reminds me of something I?d see in Reno. Entering here, you see the bar and off to the right booths to sit in with that cheesy red leather type look to it from the 70?s. A Happy Days feel. Then towards the back it turns into a Tiki Lounge setting. They have a TON of phat songs to choose from. This place was real busy on Friday night. We put our song request in around 11pm and it took about 20 songs for ours to be called. So get your song in early and often. Fun place! They do allow smoking, however.

Went to the Alibi a couple of weeks ago for a bachelorette party and even though it was packed, we managed to grab a booth in the back for all 10 of us. Unfortunately we were told there were 40 people ahead of us for karaoke already. A few of us put songs up plus the requisite $1 each (which I only think you should have to pay when you actually sing a song) including the bride. The KJ was very nice and after slipping her a fiver, she said she would make sure the bride-to-be sang, which she did after not too long. We were also told we could only order 3 items from the menu since we got there a bit after midnight and the kitchen was closed. We ended up ordering all three items including chips and salsa, which was good, hummus with pita, which was also good, and the macaroni and cheese, which was totally AWESOME! It was made with pepperjack and other cheeses and it was honestly the best I have ever had! Our server was SO nice (I can't remember his name but he was young and cute and probably new) and he was very attentive to our needs. He wasn't rude or stressed out even though it was so packed and we had a big party.
Overall, I really liked the Alibi, although I would recommend getting there early in the evening if you want to sing or eat. I also probably wouldn't recommend it for a bachelorette party, although a birthday party would probably be fun there.
Oh yeah, their bathrooms do indeed need improvement (maybe they will be expanded in the future?), but didn't quite keep me from wanting to go back.

Pros: Friendly waitstaff, awesome mac n cheese

Cons: Bathrooms, karaoke wait time

The atmosphere is really chill and the crowd is really into the karaoke there. The drinks are weak and the list for singing is really long.....expect to wait about an hour before your name is called.

I've been to the Alibi a few times, and each visit has been a memorable experience. The decor is unbeatable, the staff is friendly, and on weekends it's packed with excited karaoke fans and singers. However, this fun joint has some major flaws. It is large establishment with a sizable karaoke lounge and a sprawling dining area and bar, yet there is only one women's restroom--a sad, single-stall job consistently in disrepair (clogged toilet, broken lock, missing lock, missing DOOR, etc.). Although the staff is upbeat and hardworking, there are clearly not enough servers working on weekends. The wait staff is spread thin and service is slow, so prepare to order two of your favorite drinks at a time. And while you're at it, plan to keep downing the drinks all night long. Although this place is fun when you're appropriately boozy, the thrill wears off big time when sobriety hits. On weekends the Alibi is crowded, dirty, smokey, and home to the absolute worst karaoke crooners I've ever heard, all of which can be a real treat....if you're dunk.

A few final pros: The Cesar salad is great, and you can buy a bucket of Landsharks for $12.

I don't ever want to see this place in the light of day. I want my Alibi dark, loud, and seen through drunken eyes. I have so many great memories of this place, I can only praise it. It's Portland's original tiki bar with little pretention (hipsters have been known to frequent it), cheap watery drinks, awesome decor, karaoke (sometimes too many people though) all packaged under the best neon sign this side of the 45th parallel. The food? Don't eat here unless you have the munchies and are craving something unhealthy and fried covered in bright red sweet and sour sauce. Yuppies and families avoided it, hipsters have loved it. But over the years, it still maintains this blue collar familial feeling, dirt and all.

My spouse and I tried the Alibi for a weekday lunch. Found the drinks watery and the food mostly breaded and fried.

I had a great time here twice. Hard to get a cab after hours though and the whole "pay for karaoke" situation was just about unacceptable. Several situations to experience, near bar, far from bar, back hall...a nice diversity. The crowd was eclectic: hippies, slackers, frat-crowd (but not to unbearable), our aging parental generation...all good folks. I gave it a four because of pay per play karaoke...not "kewl." All in all a favorable experience.

Where's Reed? They said he left?? No!!! We love to sit at the bar and just watch him work because he is one of the BEST bartenders in our fair town, I've never seen a server/bartender have so much fun and work as hard as this guy. Portland's bartenders are generally hum drum and too busy talking to pour a drink but The Alibi's bartender is a hidden gem. We love you Reed!! The other bartenders are good, too, it's a show every night so we have to say that this is one of our favorite places in town.

People were having fun and the atmosphere is very funky-tiki bar decor. The music is great (lots of 80s songs I used to dance to in clubs) and the seating was great. Lots of room in this place. The service was great-our server was very attentive and helpful. The drinks were fine, a little too sweet for my taste, but the Maitai was decent. The food should be avoided; it's all heavy, breaded, deep-fried fat. The salad was nothing but ice burg lettuce coated in dressing. However, my friends and I did enjoy our drinks and sang along to the music. It's a fun place with lots of people enjoying themselves. The parking lot was great and we had no trouble finding a spot. The biggest complaint I have is the bathroom-it's horrible. The women?s' bathroom has one toilet in a closet-sized area with no proper stall door (two swinging disconnected doors that don't shut and the gap between the doors prevents any privacy).

I came here for the birthday party of a friend of a friend. Expecting to show up and leave as soon as I spent an obligatory half hour, I ended up closing the place down and having a lot of fun. The service was efficient and i always seemed to have a drink in front of me (even if i didn't remember ordering one). That was on a weekend night and because huge flocks of college kids usually aren't my thing unless i'm totally anihalated, I now frequent the alibi on weeknights. Karaoke is avoidable if you're not into it and there are plenty of cool things to look at as well as a reasonable mixture of all sorts of portland types to talk to.

My wife and I were there on a Saturday night for a work party and it was one of the busiest places I've ever seen. I was really amazed at the decor and atmosphere, the people were fun and the staff was just plain busy. We spent most of the night there and had a great time, though service was a bit backed up we didn't have to wait too long at all for our drinks. They could make the restrooms a bit bigger (I'm a big guy) but overall this place is amazing. I've never seen anyplace like it and the colors of the drinks were over the top. I'm not much of a karaoker but it was packed to the walls with singing and dancing, it was just fun to watch. I had a drink called a Scurvy Sailor, I don't know what was in it but I'll be back to find out. North Portland rules!

I absolutely love the Alibi! The tiki decor of the place is amazing. They have great food and excellent service. I have yet to have a bad experience there. The Staff is one of a kind, very friendly and accommodating. I always have a great time there. The drinks are pretty strong and pretty easy on your wallet(2.50 for PBR)! If you go on the weekend you have to be patient becuase it can get very busy, but I have find myself still having a fabulous time. Durring the week Its different. I usually go in with groups of 6 or more for karoke on weeknights. Karoke there is a blast. EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONE gets way into it. Its a show in itself, great entertainment. If you have the chance check it out. The best part is that they have a free buffet on saturday nights! ANyways, I think they do a great job taking care of their clientel.

I want to start out with you definitely need to go to The Alibi to experience it for yourself. I have gone there twice now, the first time was on New Years Eve and the service was awesome & couldn't have been better. The second time I went there with some co-workers I was very, very disappointed in the service. My co-workers and I got to the restaurant a little after 6:00pm on a Friday night and all was well. As soon as 9:00pm rolled around and the karaoke was getting started and the place was starting to get packed and the service went down hill. Our server totally quite stopping by our table and mind you we were on the way up to the karaoke area. When we were ready to pay our bill and leave we ended up having to ask a different server about our check. He then told our server that we'd wanted our check and he did acknowledge us and yet we waited for another 45 minutes before we decided to just walk out. I do love the atmosphere and the food was good, but if you want good service I would highly recommend going and leaving before the karaoke gets started. And just a side note...all of the comment you'll most likely end up ready online regarding the drinks being watered down...THEY ARE!!! I am a very, very light weight drinker and I had 3 drinks and not one thing felt different. Good luck and have fun with whatever you decide to do.

Let me get the negative out of the way: We had a party of about 20 people and the server did not tell anyone that she had already included the gratuity on the bill...so she made a killing that night! Seemed like a real sleezy way of making a few extra bucks. Anyway...
The service was very good, the atmosphere couldn't be better, and the karaoke added another element to keep people entertained. So many times in large groups there will be someone who is shy or doesn't know anyone else or is just a wall flower and at The Alibi you don't have to worry about everyone having a good time. As the night progresses and the tropical drinks take over your senses, there is guaranteed to be plenty of smiles and laughs as your friends, or even total strangers, attempt ridiculous songs on the karaoke floor.
The polynesian atmosphere was a lot of fun w/ great lighting effects and plenty of flower lei's for the guests.
The Alibi is a great place to go with just a few friends or with a large group. Just watch your bill and make sure gratuity hasn't already been added!

The Alibi is a great place to go with just a few friends or with a large group. Just watch your bill and make sure gratuity hasn't already been added!

Pros: FUN! Great atmosphere, great karaoke, good service

Cons: the occasional sly server sneaking on the gratuity

.

Just like the many nooks and crannies that are present inside the Alibi, so too is it's reputation. It is definitely different from other bars and the karaoke is always entertaining. I didn't get a chance to try their food, but I will definitely go back because it was so fun. I think the prices were reasonable for drinks and I've heard they give out free food around 12:00 p.m.

If you like old-school greasy burgers, this is the place to go. All the trimmings, served up hot! Big fresh-baked onion-roll bun. Fries, rings or tater salad. The service is also from another era--open, friendly real-people who want to make sure you feel appreciated as a customer. We had a birthday party in the bar once, the bartender reserved the space, decorated with balloons and bought the birthday girls each a drink. The ambience is over-the-top Tiki Room, and attracts all ages and all types.

I miss Maui terribly, so I just drive a few blocks to The Alibi for lunch or dinner and cocktails. The food is always of the highest quality and many menu items are Hawaiian recipes. I can not decide which is better - the drinks or the sense of humor of the top-notch bartenders. They also do banquets. If there was a higher rating number than 10 I would surely assign it to this wonderful bit of "Paradise in Portland".
