Visited for the first time, it came regarded. Sauces are great, that's where it ended for me. I do smoke meat for myself and take pride in it, and felt no pride in the food I was served. A lazy attempt at smoking meat. I left half my dinner where it sat, thinking about my next rack o' ribs.......

They have a GREAT happy hour menu with most items at $5. You can have them delivered to your front door through DELIVERED DISH which is awesome. Service is good. Atmosphere can be loud at times. Food is great. I like the cole slaw, home fries w garlic sauce, and the Combo Platter. I would recommend to any BBQ fans.

I went to Clays today and the food was decent, for my taste, the ribs were WAY to oversauced, i felt sick after this and i felt full for the rest of the afternoon. There were not that many apetizer choices and the menu was small. I had the spareribs and then got really bad diahreah.

This is some of the best bbq I've had here in Portland. We stopped by on a whim, and we weren't disappointed. Even though it was about 30 mins til closing, the staff didn't bat an eye.\n\nNot only is it great bbq, but the portions are HUGE!!!\n\nCan't wait to go back !!

I'm a son of the south and have lived in SC for 25 years. I have been searching for good BBQ in Portland for about 2 years now. I had heard good things about Clay's but was very disappointed. Here are a few bullet points of my experience.\r\n\r\nPulled pork sandwich comes with cheddar cheese and onions.\r\nHome fries have ranch dressing poured over them.\r\nThe pulled pork was dripping with sauce, even though I asked for my sauce on the side, and it tasted like a bad school lunch room sandwich.\r\n\r\nI will never be back to Clay's and suggest that other's don't order the pulled pork sandwich. It was horrific.

Pros: Friendly Service

Cons: Taste

I'm giving this BBQ spot top honors purely because of their delicious meat. We ordered chicken wings and ribs, which were both excellent. The wings were grilled instead of fried and the meat was smokey, tender and falling off the bone, covered in tangy, mild sauce! The sides were also tasty. On the downside, the restaurant has pretty much no atmosphere, there was one single lone, stressed out waitress, and it was freezing cold inside! Next time I plan on ordering Clay's to go, which is a service they readily offer.

Clays was a good lunch spot for me, my girlfriend, and our dog. The staff seemed friendly but our server seemed to really want us to pay quickly. She asked a few times then just brought our bill when we were not done with our food and still had 3/4 of our beers left. The other staff seemed much better so this is not why I marked a two star review. I understand the server may have been getting off shift and thats ok, just say you would like us to pay because you have to clock out. I understand that. \r\nThe reason for the two star rating is that the BBQ is OK. Not good, surely not great. The pulled pork special was a sloppy mess of BBQ sauce usually reserved for cafeteria style food. There was no option to get the BBQ sauce on the side. Big problem!!!! We also had the gumbo... It had great flavor with a good amount of good stuff to fill the bowl. The only down side was the presentation, the gumbo did not look llike food but tasted good. \r\nFinally the beer selection was ok... Come on guys its in the heart of portland!!! Having said all of this I am not disappointed with Clay's but rather see some great potential so I am going to keep going back to try more bbq. Hopefully with an option to have dry bbq.

Cons: Only wet BBQ no option for dry!!!!

From the moment I walked in I didn't feel welcomed. FINALLY got a seat, ate , and wish I didn't and left the smell of the place in my mind. Wish the smell did justice... \nExpensive too, salads for 10 + dollars. Once again, wait staff was very rude and wanted us out of there as soon as possible. I would not recommend it. Only thing I would tell people to go there for is to sit on the curb and smell the air and the slaw. Although, slaw would be VERY easy to make at home. \ncheers!

Clay's got me twice, and I'm starting to think it's overrated. Our meat was burnt & disappointing several times, and the pork sandwich was all bun, no meat. If that's your idea of a BBQ, try it out. Worse, the staff gave the general vibe that they didn't want us there- ever. Is there anything more annoying than a hovering waitress, trying to corral you out of there when there's no one else waiting for a table? If you want to be rushed to eat average food at a high price, try it out!

\r\nno lunch menu on sunday, apparently.\r\n\r\nbbq where i'm from is cheap. real cheap. clay's is not real cheap. the food's ok, but charging high for bbq in pdx is like saying, 'pdx is so devoid of real culture, that we can charge high for hick po'folks food'. its not that we don't like the food, but come on, $9 for a pulled pork sandwich?

I admit that I miss the traditional barbeque sides, but the heart of good barbeque is the meat, right? My wife and I just got a combo platter, with ribs, chicken, and sausage, and they were all good. The chicken had a nice smokiness, was tender, and it was so well cooked that the cartilage was even edible. I liked the spice of the sausage, though it seemed a bit much for my wife. But the ribs...oh man those were delicious. Best ribs I've had in Portland so far. I recommend Clay's but not if you need to have the traditional selection of sides and choice of sauce.

Pros: good ribs, but I'd leave the jerky alone.

Cons: parking's a pain, so take your bike

Heard the salads were good. They Are! No iceberg lettuce here. BBQ very tender & tasty. Not crowded on a Sunday afternoon. Good selection of Micro-brews and check out the dessert.

Pros: Great food reasonably priced.

Cons: Parking could be a problem

.

It was okay, not splendid. It was below average. I mean for the price it wasn't too bad, but I was hoping something more tender and flavorful. The meat tasted little dry and chewy.. The decor and ambience can do more I think,.. if this joint was in North Portland, perhaps it would be okay.. If you don't have a car and live in that area, it would suffice.

Clay's smokehouse has some awesome food. They also have a happy hour from 2-5 Wed-Fri with $1 ribs and $1 beers. This is also a good time to go b/c there is more parking available. The ribs are really good, beer ok. Also the brisket sandwich and coleslaw is good. Overall a really good deal for your money.

Clay's Smokehouse has a different take on the sides, but the usual barbecue meats are all there--good pork ribs, brisket, chicken, etc. They have one mild sauce that, if you're used to fiery hot spice, you may not love, but at least it's a balanced sauce. \r\n\r\nIt's a comfortable atmosphere, and I've always experienced good service there.\r\n\r\nDefinitely try Clay's Smokehouse.\r\n\r\nYou can see my complete review at BBQPDX on Blogspot.

Clay's is amazing, great BBQ brisket and ribs, they make their own sauce and my favorite side dish is their cloeslaw which is simple, no mayo but vinegar instead with poppy seeds, delicious. They even make their own beef jerkey

It was raining, no parking, when I finally got there food took too long to come out, and the service was not polite, food tasted burnt, and when I complained they said that it's normal to come out like that....I want my money back, but the gas cost of going back is not worth it. Sides? forget it, I can get better stuff from Safeway Deli.

My husband and I ran into this place about a month ago. We didn't realize what a treat it would be. \r\n\r\nThey have wonderful ribs and chicken. Their home fries are not what you would think of off-hand. They are like something grandma would have made. I was apprehensive at first but once I had a bite of them with the barbecued ribs, I was hooked. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. :-) \r\n\r\nWe sat outside and were served by Emily. She had a great personality and made us feel right at home. She developed a rapport with my children and I think my 3 year old now has a crush on her. :-) The kids are picky eaters but they dug right in and ate so much they fell asleep on the way home. \r\n\r\nI've eaten at quite a few barbecue places and this place is right at the top. It's hard to find a good barbecue place that has good service and is clean. This one fit the bill on all of them. \r\n\r\nNext time you want a good smoky slab of ribs with excellent flavor, served up with a satisfying side dish, go to Clay's. It's da bomb!

Clay's is the perfect place to go and get some wings for a football game or some grilled fish for a quiet dinner. I don't know what kind of wood they use but it is superb. The prices are decent and when they tell you it will be ready in 15mins, they mean it. Great place, good food.

Ordered several dozen wings for big game. Wings were ready exactly when promised and piping hot too. They even gave me newspaper to keep the container from burning my hands. Meat fell right off the bone. Overall, they were superb, only, if you are looking for that cheap heartburn style with a couple of pieces of meat hidden by the skin you will not be happy. These wings are full of meat and covered in real BBQ sauce, although you may be able to ask for a side of potassium benzoate to recreate that 5 star cuisine.

I placed a to go order at Clay's, picked it up and took it home. Once home I realized that I had received the wrong item. I called in and told Clay's about the mistake and they asked if I wanted to come back and get the correct item. I drove all the way back and when I got there they wanted to charge me again for the replacement entree. ( I brought back the incorrect entree untouched.) They insisted I had ordered wrong and were very rude. I always order the same item at Clay's and I know I ordered correctly. They wouldn't budge and I left having paid for food that I never ordered. Clay's has some good food, but not good enough to out weigh their horrible service.

I just love this place. Usually I keep my favorite places to myself, but since Clay?s has already become so popular, I don?t mind recommending. We?ve enjoyed Clay?s for a couple of years now, and we?ve never been disappointed in the service or the food. My husband is a big fan of the ribs. I recommend the sliced pork-loin salad and a cup of the gumbo. Wonderful!\r\n\r\n

You know that look people make when they are enjoying a great meal so much they feel a little self-conscious? They sort of roll their eyes from time to time... possibly to distract themselves from the intensity of it all. Anyway, we were doing a lot of that last night at Clay's. Here it is the next day and it is all I can think about. \r\n\r\nI suspect the guy from Texas and I have very different taste buds. Texans seem to think they have the market covered when it come to most things but that has not been my experience. I am from Missouri. I thought Kansas City BBQ was the gold standard for most people wasn't it? Anyway...Clay's BBQ sauce ruled... for me it was a mixture of KC and Arkansas style (zesty!) . The sauce is only part of the product though and it wouldn't be what it is without the meat which was perfectly tender without being over-cooked. The smoked flavor of our brisket was balanced and natural. In fact everything was perfect. Great coleslaw, great potatoes, great yogurt stuff they give you for your potatoes. - We loved it! - Save room for Upside-down cake! \r\n

I really enjoy dining here. It smells like Memphis at high noon. The menu is varied and features sammies and salads as well as Q. Actually you can't really niche Clay's. It's good food, reasonable priced. The rib platter is great. Home fries with this secret sauce. Tasty coleslaw. The pork sandwich with blue cheese is fantastic. It's a mellow scene you should go.

This is a fine barbeque establishment ? and since I live near by, I will be back again and again. I had the mixed barbeque platter (substituting brisket for ribs ? I love?s my brisket!) and my wife, who?s from the Northwest and not a huge fan of barbeque, got a turkey salad. The brisket was wonderful, the smoked chicken was fantastic, and the hot links gave me a stomach-ache (but I?ll get?em again!) The potatoes that came on the side, while not southern in any way, shape or form were quite addictive. My usually polite and mild-tempered wife, upon eating her first potato, became a wild-eyed potato-eating monster and I was eventually forced to defend my plate against her with cutlery lest she eat every last one. Now? I searched in vain for the sign in Clay?s that said, ?Original Texas Barbeque?. My guess is? there was never one in the first place; but if you read all the one-star reviews (almost exclusively from whiny ex-Texans) you?d think that the Oklahoma born chef who was trained in South Carolina regularly advertised that he was from Plano. The truth is my fellow Texans, that Clay?s isn?t a great Texas barbeque place, and it doesn?t claim to be one. But if you can get past that Texas-bred world-view of yours (you know, the one where Texas is the center of the universe) you might discover that Clay?s serves up some pretty good grub. To everyone else, I highly recommend Clay?s excellent barbeque, just leave your whiny Texas friends at home and you?ll enjoy a wonderful and peaceful meal.

Cons: I don't have two stomachs

Food in general was good. The wings were fall of the bone fantastic but lacked the kick need for a great wing. Since this wis not a wing place I'll say they were a great appetizer. The bones were fatty (I prefer baby backs which they don't have). The only sauce selection they had was good. Cole slaw was good but, I prefer traditional cole slaw like they have at Russell St. Also no potato salad. All in all I would say the place was pretty good but didnt appeal to what I really like in a BBQ joint.

I happen to be from Texas, but do not consider judging Oregon joints next to Texas BBQ joints. I have enjoyed the ribs at Russell St. many a time. Reo's is pretty good. Even Big Daddy's had a good sauce (horrible meat). Clay's is the worst BBQ I have had since moving to PDX 4 years ago. Perhaps I made a mistake in ordering the pork ribs, but ribs and brisket are really what a BBQ joint should be judged on. The electric smoker I noticed (unfortunately after eating) was discerning to say the least. The ribs were falling off the bone, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. They were bland and covered in a very uninteresting sauce. I can appreciate red sauce, but this was bad. I have never failed to fill up on BBQ, but my stomach would not let me fill it up with those ribs. The man that took care of me was very nice and the poppyseed slaw was tasty. I really don't understand how this was an editor's choice for BBQ. Maybe everything else on the menu is phenomenal, but I refuse to eat at a BBQ joint that can't make decent ribs.

Pros: Slaw

Cons: Eating cole slaw for a meal isn't a good idea

I've been to Clay's many times. During our kitchen remodel, we regularly ordered take out from Clay's. I have tried their meat , sausage, and chicken and they are quite good, but I'm not really a barbecue expert. What keeps me coming here is their chowders and salads. The corn chowder is hearty, sweet, and smoky, with lots of whole corn kernels. The gumbo is also delicious and spicy. A bowl of either one of these could be a lot more filling than you might expect. i just order a cup, to leave room for one of their great salads. Both the spinach salad and the Caesar salad are delicious. The big draw here is the smoked salmon (so don't order the Caesar with the chicken unless you just can't help yourself). I think most people come here for the meat, but if they don't try the smoked fish they are really missing out on something special. Clay's smokes this in house (of course). There are a couple of things on the menu that don't sound nearly as good as they are. ""Marinated potatoes"" needs to be renamed. How exciting does that sound? This is actually a big salad of mixed greens, topped with lots of grilled eggplant, pepperoncini, and the marinated potatoes. The corn and barley salad also doesn't sound great, but it is a wonderful combination. The salads come pre-dressed and tossed. i like that because it distributes the dressing evenly. Sometimes I think they are a little heavy handed with the dressing though, so you may want to ask them to go light on the dressing if that's your preference.

i agree if you are from the south you should zip it when making food comparisons in oregon. i am from the south and there are maybe 4 different types of bbq down there: rub, mustard, red sauce, vinegar and oh yeah, no sauce just slow cooked. this place is all about the red sauce and it rocks. my favorite are the wings because they smoke them, NOT FRIED. and the blue cheese has real blue cheese crumbles on top for added flavor, of course celery comes with. i like the brisket sandwhich as far as entrees go and oddly enough another fav is the house side salad, great vinagrette made in house. also grab some jerky on the way out, it's thick and spicy in the black pepper way-expensive but worth it. sat/sun 11-4 0.50 wings and dollar buds!!!! also there are good choices for vegetarians, but don't expect the moon, this place is about meat.

Cons: none really, although i wouldn't go there for romance

I love this place. Everything is so tasty!.. Might not be the heathliest place in town but it'd damn good food. And to the reviewers that keep slamming this place cause they are from the South or Tex... GO BACK... Seriously, your in Oregon now and you shouldn't be judging the resteraunts up here based on your expectations from the south, you guys lost the war, haha,.. Seriously though this place is awesome and it erks me to hear people badmouth it cause it's not ""tex bbq"" or whatever... reality check your in Oregon now...

This may be mediocre roast beef, but it is NOT good BBQ. There is no smoke ring. Hello, what? (If you don't know what a smoke ring is, you are not qualified to review BBQ.) Everything is pre-slathered with their run-of-the-mill sauce, probably because the brisket would be dry without it. Sides are hoo-hum, there are no greens. And to add insult to injury, it's fairly expensive.

Once the Delta's food became almost unedible it was time to find a new BBQ restaurant....Clay's is hands down the best in PDX. I've eaten there numerous times & I havent had a bad meal yet.\nThe restaurant is a bit small, but you never have to wait to get in, so I guess it doesnt really matter.

We ordered takeout and it was a good call, but pretty spendy. The wings are really good, with a good blue cheese sauce. The ribs were falling apart as you handle them.\nThe best part was the coleslaw with poppyseeds.. which my wife and I agreed was the best we'd ever had. Even the potatoes were really tasty...mixed with a yummy sauce of some sort. \n\nIf they were a little less expensive Id eat there more often, but its worth a treat now and then i guess.

Pros: Good Flavor, Perfectly Done, Awesome Slaw

Cons: Too Spendy, Not Enough Slaw

The food is so good here that I can never decide what to get and end up with the combo platter every time. The ribs are excelent, as are the chicken and links...so good. The side potatoes are amazing, I even love the coleslaw. If you can fit it, the desserts are wonderful - chocolate peacan pie is my favorite.\nThey even sell the sauce in a jar, so good.\nWe go there once every 2 weeks or so, I even bought a t-shirt and don't mind advertising for them.\nExcellent BBQ

We came to Clay's searching for a replacement for the Delta Cafe, and boy, did we find it. The selection is smaller, but the food is far superior: tender, mouthwatering brisket, ribs falling off the bone and loaded with meat instead of fat and gristle, spiced pork loin... I'm getting hungry. Their potatoes come with a delicious garlic sauce. I could eat a bushel. They make a corn chowder that one bowl is simply not enough of at times. Salads: try the pork loin salad: delicious thin-sliced meat with spiced nuts and fresh, thick greens. The pints of beer are standard (and by that I mean a nice selection of microbrews and domestics) and the dessert will send you over the edge. Best part: they're happy to have you there.

This place is probably #2 to Campbell's but at least they serve beer, you should get the sauce on the side b/c they slather that stuff on. The brisket and the ribs are great otherwise. The poppyseed coleslaw is pretty good too. The wing deal is nice for a weekend pigout session but the ribs were better.

You should usually beware the restaurant with touristy T-shirts for sale. Still looking for tasty bbq in Portland, but I don't think it's happening so we are probably going to give up. The meat is well-cooked, for bbq that's cooked over an electric smoker (what's THAT all about...), but the horrible bitter bbq sauce that is poured over everything managed to ruin any enjoyment we would have plucked from the ribs and brisket. Pints of beer starting at five bucks...not worth it for the food you have to choke down between gulps. Save your bbq trips for Lexington, Tennessee, Texas, and North Carolina. If you can't get there from here, grill your own dead pig and douse it with some ""Bone-Suckin' Sauce"" from Carolina that you can actually get at New Seasons. It will surpass anything you'll eat at Clay's.

Went for a Sunday picnic and promptly ordered 5 pounds of links for a Friday party. Everything here, service to ice tea to BBQ and the variety of people walking past the large windows, was top notch. Exceptional and extraordinary. I see myself as a weekly visitor.

Walking down Division, you can smell the meats smoking! Clays has really good barbeque sauce and ribs! On Saturday and Sundays, from 11-4, they have $.50 wings and $1 Rolling Rocks in a glass.

This is my favorite BBQ restaurant. The pork ribs are excellent and are some of the best that I've ever had. The beef brisket is equally good. I love their barbecue sauce. Clay's is an outstanding restaurant. Friendly and attentive service and wonderful food. The sandwiches are great, but stay away from the salads. That's not their forte. \n\nI'd call the bbq good, but not great (BTW I used to live in the south and I don't know what the texans here are complaining about). The desserts are outstanding. Key Lime Pie and absolutely the best upside down pinapple cake I've ever had. Try it just for that!\n
