Loved this restaurant for 5 years until it was sold and the new owner changed the menu. Food is below average, it was good the first couple of months they were open, but during the last couple of visits we have decided to not return, simply better restaurants in the area, especially in the Sellwood area. This restaurant has gone down hill, even there website has gotten ugly, shows inexperienced bad management, and it is a shame, this was once a tremendous place.

Having eaten here in the past, I was excited to share it with my wife. Big mistake on my part. The dining room was full, to be expected on a Friday night. What was not to be expected was the now-lackluster food and the lackluster service.

After reading the menu online and noticing the interview link of the young chef, I was excited to taste some locally grown, fresh italian cuisine. Sadly, my experience was under cooked focaccia drenched in olive oil and burnt onions along

I have been to this restaurant three times now. The first time was with friends right after the new owners took over. They seemed pretty disappointed in the fact that ownership had changed but I honestly thought the food was good. Then we went earlier this summer and were pleased to see they had live music with a nice jazz duo and some of the changes to the restaurant decor. However I thought the food was pretty disappointing and we wondered what happened to the good food we had before. It just didn't seem like much effort was put into preparing the food for how expensive it was and it was bland. Then when we were getting ready to leave we overheard the musicians saying they needed a ten minute break after an hour of playing for us and being told they needed to go play which I thought was not cool. After I tipped the musicians we left unpleased. We finally decided to give them another chance recently and were disappointed in both the service and the food quality. They charge way too much money for food that I can make better myself at home which is what I'll do next time I think about going there.

My friend and I went to this restaurant on Thursday 8/19/10. I'd seen the sign for $6 lunch specials, so I talked her into trying the place.

It is nice inside.

There were no other customers. We were seated by a young lady who I am pretty sure had never waited on a table in her life. She gave us the menus and left. She came back with water. We ordered. With each order, she had to look at the menu to see what we were talking about. (Oh, those $6.00 specials--pasta with oil and different herbs, no smaller portions of a regular menu item, no meat items). We had a meat ball sub and an Italian sub type sandwich that was supposed to have salami and other typical italian items. We each got a cup of soup.

It took over 25 minutes for our food to arrive. I actually took out my phone and was going to give them two more minutes before I left--when the food finally appeared.

The soup was edible. It was either from a can or possibly last night. It was definitely not freshly made.

The meat ball sub had two scrawny meat balls on it. My friend said they were awful. My sandwich had a couple of pieces of salami, some shredded lettuce, a small pepper, and for tomatoes--this was a kicker--were two cherry tomatoes cut in half, placed cut side down on the top of the sandiwch, so there were four round holes in the top piece of bread.

The waitress came by while we were eating, refilled the water glasses, never said a word--No, How is everything? Can I get you anything?

We went to the counter to pay. She had to dig out the menu again to get the prices and add up the bill. While running the debit card, she turned to my friend and asked how things were--my friend said---"they were ok", without much enthusiasm. I hesitated a moment and told her, "Actually, we didn't care for anything we had." She replied, "that's good to know".

Bad food, bad service, and now I am not allowed to suggest a new place for lunch. Disappointing doesn't begin to describe it! I would not recommend this restaurant to ANYONE.

We had a fantastic dinner at DaVinci's. We have not been to Davinci's since the new ownership. What were we waiting for? The decor has been updated and looks very nice. The service and food was teriffic. We are planning on going back with our family on a Friday (they have live music on Friday's) to enjoy the food and music.

Pros: Best Italian food in the Portland area.

My boyfriend and I went to Da Vincis last night for our 5th anniversary, we were very excited to go as we have had excellent food in the past. We were seated and about 15 minutes later we were given water. We then ordered a bottle of Pinot Gris, the waitress came back about 10 minutes later to say they didn't have that wine and brought something else that was not Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio and said that this is what they are using for Pinot Gris. So we ordered a different bottle of Pinot Grigio and they didn't have that either, but she said that they had this other bottle, ok, at this point I just wanted a drink, so she brought us a completely different bottle that wasnt even on the menu. We then ordered the antipasti platter, what we received was not was explained on the menu, there was only 1 cheese, and the veggies seemed like they were from the jar. Salad, if you can call it that, very small with half a cucumber slice no cheese no cracked pepper..so finally our main course comes. I ordered the seafood fettucini, it was supposed to have crab, shrimp and scallops, no crab, instead clams and it was alfredo soup and tasteless, they did not bother to let me know that they were out of crab. My boyfriends dish the carbonara was so salty. The waitress came by to ask how our food was and I told her and she took $3 off my dinner which was a $20 dish. Not acceptable. We also were not asked if we wanted desert, but by this time we had already invested 2 horrible hours and wanted to get the hell out of there. We will NEVER go back. This was a very expensive disappointing anniversary.

This was our first visit to DaVinci's. My mother and I both have Celiac disease and could not have been happier with the service we received. The waiter was very informed of the gluten free options and if unsure asked the chef about exact ingredients. Our meals were absolutely perfect, we had the braised duck and chicken masala-no flour. Heather, the chef, uses one of the best gluten free pastas and it was perfectly al dente. It was wonderful to have a wonderful Italian meal that I did not have to cook myself.
Thank you DaVinci's!!!

Superb meal with fresh made and locally grown products. What a huge improvement from the former menu and restaurant appearance. I can't recommend this place enough....it was fantastic! The salad actually had fresh greens, the bread was perfectly warmed and quite fresh, the seafood was awesome as were the sauces. Thank you for upscaling our Milwaukie restaurant opportunities!!

I grew up in the Milwaukie area and can tell you this is a working class town with many Italians. We loved to go to Da Vinci's for many years and enjoyed all the dishes especially the fish and veal dishes. We were shocked to find out on our last visit that it was sold. The food is not the same, everyone at our table agreed that the food quality has gone way down and we decided that it is best, if we want Italian food, to go to the Sellwood Area. The new owner's strategy basically chased us out of the restaurant and caused us to find alternatives that are now, actually better than the original Da Vinci's which I say was a 4 star, but this place is now a 1 star, how sad after all of the hard work by the original owner, I really don't get it, why change a wonderful place?? Won't go back.

LexaJayne, we here at DaVinci??s are truly sorry about you gluten-free incident. We appreciate your honesty and for having the enthusiasm to write a review. We have just started to support this part of the community and, like you, we are still in our gluten-free infancy stage. We are quickly learning how to provide this support better. We are actually working with several gluten-free information sources such as Gluten Free Portland Oregon to so that we can better educate ourselves on this unique diet. We are in the process of teaching our employees and adding more gluten-free items to the menu such as gluten-free beer, bread, lasagna, and pizza. Also, because we make our croutons from scratch you will soon be able to have gluten-free croutons. Please keep an eye out for our new gluten-free products on local web site listings. Also, as a token of our sincere apologies and appreciation for bringing this issue to our attention we invite you and your husband in for dinner, on us, to discus other areas that we can support our gluten-free customers. Don??t worry, we have your name from the receipt so others will not be able to claim this offer. Please call in advance if you would like the gluten-free lasagna. As a side note, we no longer are serving the stroganoff; it did meet our standards either.

Oh, Gus a.k.a. NOTGOOD, as an ex-employee/cook no wonder you are bitter. The expired chicken incident was a horrible thing, but don't worry it was from the area you were responsible for and the problem was quickly resolved as soon as you walked out in the middle of your shift and we realized all the areas you had not kept up on. I understand why you walked out as you had stated several times in Spanish (thinking we didn't know Spanish) that you hated working for a woman and that you couldn't believe a woman could do as good a job as a man. I also understand that you are bitter because we wouldn't re-hire you after you came begging for your job back. If you still have your job at Busters Barbecue I hope it is going well for you but I also hope that they are keeping close tabs on there supplies. All of the current employees love working at DaVinci's, ask any of them. As far as the food quality goes, you are mistaken. Ingredients are fresh and not shipped from the other side of the world like most restaurants who have a strict menu. Sadly it is true that we have lost a few customers who wanted Stouffer's Lasagna to stay but we have exceedingly made up for these few losses by gaining back many customers who had a previously bad experience here (prior to the new owners taking over) and new customers. In the end, I am sorry that your dreams of DaVinci's going out of business will not come true. Perhaps you should move on with your life.

Too bad this was bought by new owner that really needs customers.
Went there on a Saturday night around 7:15pm, and it had 4-5 tables of customers? This place should have been crowded and reservations needed.

Wasn't impressed by our waiter that spent more time MIA than taking care of us. He had one couple to take care of and was slow, didn't listen when asked for items that were missing, so was forced to request again after waiting 15 minutes and not eating until we received missing items. Never been in too many regular Italian restaurants that don't have regular grated parmesan cheese on table?

This restaurant needs to be in the pricey Pearl District with their spendy menu and attempts to act like they are such an artsy hangout.

Had each a tiny salad with lousy Italian dressing, bland, tasteless cup of soup with a few green beans and shared lasagna that tasted fine. For all this in tiny portions it cost us $32.95??? It was not worth it!

Some customers said the place looks so wonderful with the art hanging on the walls with the price tags hanging down? We felt it was tacky and their attempts to dress the place with black, wrinkled tablecloths didn't improve the spendy menu.

I don't care if they only serve local anything if it is going to take a loan to be able to order it. Need to put less expensive dishes to get a following before they jack up the prices!

Ate in this restaurant years ago and felt it was expensive then, and finally decided to give it another try. Won't be back unless we see a huge sign claiming it has NEW OWNERS. The owner made the remark that she didn't care that someone had made a rude remark about one of her waitresses, and her time would be better spent training them better! We had one that was terrible, and I know it wasn't the same one.

Let me start by saying that I'm usually not one to write reviews or even talk about a dining experience unless something's really off. Next, I'll tell you that I've recently started a gluten free diet. Having been on this diet for a couple of weeks, I was overjoyed when I read an article that mentioned that Da Vinci's has gluten-free pasta to substitute for any pasta dish. Thrilling! And to eat pasta again!

The hostess that sat us was very nice and when my husband asked about the gluten-free menu she quickly informed us of the various type of pastas they substitute. When I asked the waiter if the recipe for the stroganoff or the salad dressing had any gluten (after I informed him that I'm on a gluten-free diet) he questioned why I needed to know and asked if I have an allergy, which I thought inappropriate either way. I answered that I might and am just attempting to stick to the diet. He said that he didn't know about the stroganoff and said that I could just get the balsamic vinegar dressing (without bothering to ask the chef about either). Although the questioning took under a minute in time, I felt that not only was the waiter inconsiderate about my dietary needs, but seemed bothered about even being asked. I can definitely understand a lack of knowledge as I'm only learning myself, but there was no attempt made and a lack of condsideration was evident.

Besides this, the food tasted decent enough (though overpriced and though there were especially tempting looking crutons in my "gluten-free" salad) but almost half of the beef in my stroganoff was huge chunks of solid fat. This, coming from a girl who keeps the fat and skin on almost every poultry dish I eat.

Needless to say I won't be going back.

We visited this restaurant a couple years ago and vowed never to return. The overpriced meals were terrible and the service was worse. I was excited to hear that the restaurant had changed owners, and I was anxious to give it a try. As a family of five it is not cheap to take the whole family out to a nice meal and when we do we appreciate good food as well as good service. We went to dinner at Da Vinci's tonight(Sat Jan 2nd, 2010) in Milwaukie and from the time we walked in it was a new experience. Our waiter(Josh) was kind and help full, we never felt rushed or waited for anything. I went with his recommendation and ordered the feast. OMG!!! LASAGNA?!! are you kidding?! this should have a name of its own it was simply amazing...Fresh juicy cheesy goodness!! I can't wait to go back. The desert..... well you will have to try it yourself YUM YUM!!! Good job new owners!!! this Milwaukie family will be back for more and often. THANK YOU!

We've been a patron of this restaurant since it opened. The new ownership has destroyed the previously-established exquisite cruisine, quiet atmosphere and quality service. Five of us dined lasted night for the last time at DaVinci's. The food (what little there was of it) was cold, tasteless, bitter and over-priced. The service was scarce, rushed when it got there, and our food was piece-mealed. And, when you thought it couldn't get any worse, it did. Hours later I was sicker than a dog.

A few months ago we ran into an ex employee of Patricks, while talking with him he was explaining how over the past 4 years Patrick owned the restaurant he was using boxed stouffers lasagna, getting manicotti from a frozen box and making Minestrone from a can. Before I thought about posting this ad my husband and some friends decided to go to DaVincis and check out the new owners, because the reviews people are writing are really not giving them a chance. The new look of the inside was what this place needed 10 years ago, they had live Jazz and desserts from a local organic baker. Our server was Ed and he recomended a really amazing Dolcetto that went great with my Filet Mignon and as for the rest of the table they were all ohing and ahing over there food. I was very impressed with Chef Heather and what she has done with this place. Ashame on all of you who have written such hurting words of discouragement of this wonderful restaurant. For those people who know what good food is, please check this place out. I have been back with my husband 4 times already. And we love Jose's smiling face and jokes.

Pros: Homemade food made with passion

Cons: People not giving a chance

Just got back from Davinci's and finished crying enough that I can write.
First of all, the tableclothes look very nice. And the new pictures...beautiful.
Now...I would like my disappointment to unfold, as it did for me. What did you do to my bread? Where is my freshly grated parmesan cheese? My bottle of olive oil?
The salad appears the same. But...my bread. It was divine. The cheese. I took for granted.
Here comes the main course. Oysters. They taste...ok. They are not the same. There is half as many. The sauce. Gone. The zuccini. Replaced by diminished squash. I could cry. With every oyster, my sadness deepens.
Dessert. Patrick's Tiramisu...is gone. Gone for ever I tell you. Have you ever tasted it? From the almond flavor whipped cream to the espresso soaked lady fingers. Exquisite. Perfect. You see...I worked for him 6 years ago. I took for granted, the food that was Patrick...and now...It's gone. Davinci's...my friend...is DEAD!!!!
Let's start a support group because I am truly depressed. I can't believe I will never have...the best food ever!!!

Pros: Tableclothes

Cons: They destoyed everything good about my restaurant!!

what the heck happened to the restaurant I've been going to for 15 years???????? What a shock to see the place almost deader than a mausoleum on a Saturday night. then after getting our food I understood why!!! the chicken parmesan was drier than a piece of wood with hardly any marinara sauce that was under the chicken. NO cheese on it, loose bread crumbs on it that weren't cooked. I had linguine with 4 cheese sauce. It was like a congealed mess of goo. Not silky smooth sauce that hugged the noodles like it used to be. Sad, sad, sad...Then my friend ordered a pizza to go for her hubby. Good thing she opened the box. The crust was doughy, pizza slices all smooshed together and on top of the other. What an expensive disaster. I will NEVER go back to this again and have already told all my friends who have also gone there over the years. What a total disappointment.

Pros: seeing the old waiter Eddie again

Cons: ummmm chicken parmesan with uncooked bread crumbs on top?

This place is not the same since it was sold in mid 2009, and I do not like the new menu or changes. We soooooo enjoyed the old menu, and the old world italian food, now this place is trying to be a San Francisco upscale restaurant in Milwaukie,OR. Oil and water do not mix. Milwaukie is all about Libby's, Roake's Hot Dogs, and Buster's Ribs. If Black Angus couldn't make it, how can this place?

We wanted to like this place after new owner took over. The first time we tried new owner version, we were disappointed that no zukes, instead a weird vegetable from farmers market. The second time was OK, but the third time was horrible. The owner seems to have a high ego and arrogance that is not focused on the customer. Kind of like Pelosi saying "take it or leave it" Well, for over 10 years we loved Da Vinci's just the way it was, very consistent northern italian food. The new owner has created overpriced smaller meals and removed a Milwaukie tradition. The food is NOT consistent, like it was with previous owner. The recipe's we loved are gone, replaced by what new owner "thinks" customers will like. You can't drive away existing customers and stay in business. Won't return.

Pros: Decor

It makes me laugh when people write reviews on a place when they don't exactly know what they are talking about. The new owners have giving this restaurant more then what it needed. They believe in local, organic, sustanable farmers. Chef Heather has done an awesome job to improve a place that has been needed in milwaukie. Nobody knows the hard work and dedication she puts in every day for 18 hour days to make this the place to go for great food. Check it out and try it and tell me what you think. Don't be narrow minded and forget what good food is. It's the 21st century get over Garlic bread and food from a can it's fresh and real.

Pros: Best Food

.

New owners have ruined what used to be the best dining experience in outer Southeast.
Gone are individually prepared dishes of fresh high quality ingredients, replaced with what can only be described as meals one would expect at Izzy's buffet.
Save your money, prices are ridiculous for the quality of the food.

Pros: Nice wine list, better salads

Cons: Inconsistent poor quality main dishes

.

The food used to be so good, many specialties, great flavor, sauces cheese, and house dressing - top of the line ingredients. There must be a new chef & ownership. Not even fresh ground pepper. Didn't notice a change in price though. We wouldn't even try dessert. I'm disappointed - loved to take out of town there. Now I'll have to take them across town to another fantastic neighborhood Italian place in north Portland.

I might go back and try pizza though.

Pros: Music, staff seemed nice enough

Cons: No Italian to it

It is so refreshing to find a real, east-coast style restaurant in the midst of the few trendy, gourmet Italian places in the Portland area. This is the only Italian restaurant I found out here that actually knows how to make eggplant parmesan, my favorite Italian dish. Da Vinci's knows what they are doing. The prices are very reasonable, you can easily get in (located in Milwaukie), the wait staff are very friendly, all the food friends have tried (I only eat the eggplant) is fabulous, from the salads to the wine. Just writing this makes me want to go over there right now and eat.

Pros: Amazing traditional Italian food!

Cons: I cannot think of any...

This is some of the best Italian food around and reasonably priced. Not a fancy place, but very comfortable and intimate. Beats the big chains hands down!

This small spot is a wonderful place to eat. The food is very classic Italian and filling every time. I was very pleased with the service as well as the serving size of the meal. I would suggest giving Da Vinci's a try.

I love all the seafood dishes at this restaurant, especially the scampi prawns, chapinno, rock fish, oysters, and seafood fettachinni. The veal and chicken dishes are also great followed by the traditional italian meals, actually everything is really good. Leave room for dessert, they are excellent.

Took my wife and 14 others for her 65th birthday party at DaVinci's. Wow, it was the most memorable night at any restaurant birthday party. All the guests raved about the entree's , especially the halibut cheeks special (butter/wine/caper sauce) , veal with gorgonzolla sauce, and the scampi. The head waiter, I think his name is Bud, gave us incredible service, everything arrived hot. The Italian Wines were enjoyed by all the guests, but the real topper of the evening were the desserts especially the Whopper Moose Cheese Cake and the Chocolate Cake. Several also mentioned that they had the best spumoni ice cream they had ever tasted. The combination of good friends, great wines, super service, and gourmet italian food , and desserts made this evening one to remember for a long time.

As it turns out the chef/owner has an impressive background as Chef at Canlis (SF), Doro's Italian (SF), McCormick's, and Riverplace. I found his history on the website. Can't believe they have been open since 1992, sure glad we found the place. A little piece of Italy just south of Milwaukie downtown.

A freind of mine ranted and raved about this restaurant and how I simply HAD to try their meatballs, I'm part Italian and he thought I'd be impressed.
No. The food doesn't cut it here. For the price, I was expecting much larger portions, as well as tasty food. The meatballs tasted like meat LOAF, that's just wrong, if you know what I mean. The garlic bread was OK, but again, small. I guess if you're counting calories and need to diet, this would be a great 'alternative' to real Italian dining.
On the plus side, the desserts are very good, as is the service. The waiter seemed a little disappointed when I said they could have done better, that is rather impressive from the wait staff.
Also, you can expect to be crammed like a sardine once this place gets busy, there is no privacy, something I'm sure I'm not alone in cherishing while dining.

Pros: Food is good, JUST good, service and desserts excellent, OK parking.

Cons: Just average Italian, not authentic, seating is much too close in crowded conditions.

I've eaten here a few times and their food is excellent. Very good menu with to die for dessert list - very authentic (not to be confused with Olive Garden "italian" food). Good place to bring family. Very courteous employees as well.

The new Owners/Chef changed everything we loved about this place, will probably be out of business by Jan 2010, we don't see any of the regular customers in there and they had a new brunch and nobody showed up. It is obvious to us that the new owners lack experience in the Restaurant business. The cook also lacks experience because the food tasted like it was prepared ahead of time.

Consistently good Italian food. Have been to this place at least 20 times and it is always consistent. After a little Italian wine, we start off with the anti-pasta appetiser, wonderful. The minnestrone and salads are good, and we really like the seafood fettachinne, chicken marsala, chicken parm, and lasagna. We started going here because our mom was riding the bus by the restaurant and the bus driver said "They have wonderful chicken, be sure to try it". One of the waiters is a master desert chef, all the deserts are excellent also. We continue to go back time and time again. We notice a lot of repeat diners including a gentleman that eats there almost every day, he is a widower. The owner travels to Tuscany each year and brings back authentic recipe's and wine. Get there early because it tends to get crowded about 2 hours after they open. Service is excellent.

The traditional Italian dishes at this charming restaurant include pizzas, pastas with a variety of sauce options---such as pesto, primavera, carbonara---and baked standbys like lasagna and manicotti, all prepared with Portland-style…
