I write this with a burn and unable to use the membership I very recently had signed up for having been put in a bed I had never been in before, on only my 4 th tan visit. This bed, which Rachel had rushed me into not ever asking me how

Don't buy tans if you want any sort of intelligence or information. More than once, I have been greeted by ditzy service people. Also, no specials (at tanning salon?!)

I went to what was then Tan Rio back in May 2008. I purchased a package of 30 platinum tans for about $300. Which is a lot for me, yet, I was told that these tans would never expire, that is why I purchased them. Over the past year and a half I have only used 15 tans. Last week I went in to use one of these tans, and I was told that I had no tans left, and that my account was wiped clean.

When I contacted corporate, which is now Tan Republic, I was sent the following email:

We are sorry but we did extend your tans after the original expiration date. We realize that Tan Rio didn't have expiration dates on their tans, but we took over Tan Rio over a year ago. Tan Republic has a one year expiration date on all single sessions. We did at least honor some of their tans that they had sold. What we can do is if you want to purchase some more tans we can honor some or all of your old tans. Here are the options:

Buy 10 Platinum sessions ($207) we will give you 5 of your expired tans. That is $13.80 per session normally $23.
Buy 20 Platinum sessions ($414) we will give you 10 of your expired tans.
Buy 30 Platinum sessions ($621) we will give you all of your expired tans (15).

All the tans would be linked together and expire in one year from the date of purchase.
Sincerely,
Tan Republic Management

So basically, since the ownership changed, their policies changed...I was never told about this new expiration policy, and yet, now I just lost half of what I paid for! And in order to get what I paid for back, they are wanting me to buy more. This is a complete and utter rip off.

I am a seldom tanner, so purchasing large amounts of tans that expire does not work for me. This company basically just stole $150 from me!! I will be taking my tanning needs to a different company!!!

Cons: company doesn't keep word, no communication

I caution anyone who's looking for a local tanning bed and is considering purchasing a tanning 'package' from Tan Rio. Several months ago I had purchased a 4-month 'stop-n-start' package from Tan Rio's Sherwood location. We used the package for a month and then put it on pause while we took our vacation. A week after returning from our trip we went back to Tan Rio to start up our package again and noticed that the store had been emptied out. While trying to contact Tan Rio to investigate, we found that several of their contact phone numbers for other locations were either disconnected or had messages telling of a similar fate of that of the Sherwood store. When we finally got ahold of the owner, she was not at all accommodating to our situation. Our position was that we had paid $149 for a 4-month, 2-person tanning package and only received one month of service. We wanted a refund of the remainder of our 4-month package ($111.75) so that we could take our business to one of the 3 or 4 other local Sherwood businesses that providing tanning services. Her position was that the store was a franchise and was not corporate owned, that the store collected our money and she didn't see a dime of it so there was no money to be refunded. As a customer, all I see is the large "Tan Rio" sign on the building--whether it's a franchise or a corporate owned store is not a concern of mine. In the end, the offer she made us was that we could use the remainder of our package at any of her corporate owned stores. The problem with that is (aside from discerning which of her few stores are corporate owned and which are franchises) is that tanning is a service of convenience. Their closest alternative store would require us to make a 2-hour round trip drive in traffic after work every other day for 3 months. If you have an alternative in your neighborhood, I'd recommend it. Also, DON'T BUY GIFT CERTIFICATES! Can't use them at any store--just corporate.
