Horrible!!!!! Drunken owner takes all the service away from customers. Our food was nothing like we have had in the past. The decision to make everyone wait longer, while the owner who was admittedly drunk, to get any service was absolutely inappropriate. They need a wake up call. Don't drink in your small business, don't make a scene and be consistent with your food.

This place has the nerve to call it an Italian restaurant! NOT a chance, Im a second generation Italian who enjoys having authentic Italian food . Sorry to say this place is not it!!Take for instance the lasagna, it had a mush meat center that was suppose to be Italian sausage but this flavorless meat was camoflagued in fake cheese and horrible sauce,My friend had a minestrone soup in which i shared in and found it nothing short from campells. In fact, I think campells soup has more spices! My friend had Fettuccini Alfredo that was over cooked and prepared in a flavorless cream sauce. That came piping hot with the oil from the cheese or sauce ..oveflowing the plate,

I grew up in the Beaverton area, and have always loved Nonna's pizza. Now I live on the East Side of Portland. I have been known to make a special trip across town just to get some Nonna Emilia's Italian food.
Quite possibly the best Italian food in Portland.
Well worth the trip.

When we arrived at their restaurant, the dark-haired waiter evidently was agitated about something that went down earlier. The restaurant has many tables available, but we had to wait for him while he mill around the restaurant doing something irrelevant than showing us the table.

Then we get our table. Ordered our drinks and pizza. These waitpeople never brought the breads, unlike 99% of the other Italian restaurants that does. Pizza took an unusually long time to come out of the oven to our table, that we went through our drinks twice.

The pizza is a mess. They bombed it with too much cheese and buried the toppings Mt St.Helen-style. The pizza sauce is almost non-existent, it's just dough and cheese. For about $28, the pizza is an effing joke. We refused to eat any more of that so-called Italian pizza.

It's a wonder why this restaurant is still in business with waitstaff that doesn't seem interested in serving new customers and the cooks that doesn't get what constitute a great pizza.

Ciao!

Where the people get the gall to call this place a "Ristorante` Italiano" is beyond my comprehension.
There must be legions of dead Italians rolling over in their respective graves.
The audacity to call their food Italian is an insult to real Italians everywhere.
The Cheddar Cheese on the Eggplant Parmigiana but one of many disgusting points that made our experience just plain horrible.
What they call Calamari should be punishable by whipping. Calamari is squid..cleaned, breaded, and the tentacles and tubes fried. This was what they call a "pounded steak" and was as tough as plastic and just as tasteless. We sent it back. My linguine with (what once again they called Marinara Sauce) was overcooked then mixed in a pot or some other vessel with the sauce and obviously canned clams. Awful.
The complimentary antipasta was a dish with some carrot sticks, celery sticks, pepperocini, and packaged Genoa salami, pepperoni, and provolone ...the slices of which were cut into pie like pieces from the round slices.
The salad was lettuce with a few croutons.
We all found the food to have been enormous portions that none of us wanted because it was terrible.
It would be a blessing to see this place go out of business by simple virtue of how lousy the food is.
I base my opinions on my almost forty years as a Pennsylvania State Certified Chef / Culinary Arts Teacher and a lifetime in the business.
My best suggestion to anyone contemplating visiting this place would be to do a 180 degree turn and go anywhere in the opposite direction.

The food at this restaurant is an absolute abomination of "authentic" Italian cuisine. The only thing worse is the service, staff and management.

The young man at the door, Jeff, was offensively arrogant and condescending in demeanor, our waitress was a rude slob who I watched wipe her snotty nose with a ratty kleenex from her apron pocket right before taking our plates of food from another server and bringing them to our table. I refused them and SHE was offended... go figure.

In short, if you are looking to enjoy a tasty dinner served promptly and politely under sanitary conditions by folks that appreciate your patronage, (and the $100 bucks you will spend on a standard dinner for two including an appetizer, salad/soup, entree and couple glasses of barely-better-than-boxed wine) this is not the place for you. AVOID IT AT ALL COST!

I took my wife to dinner at this restaurant on the reccomendation of some coworkers. I knew ahead of time that they are uncultured slobs, but I generally take the advice of grossly obese people on the matters of walking path shortcuts and pizza, but no. this was in no way good food.

Walking in, I admit, it smelled good, and I saw some people eating what looked like a delicious pizza, so our hopes were high. We ordered a calamari appetizer, 1/2 carafe of the house pinot grigio, and a pizza that featured chicken, artichoke hearts and a bunch of other tasty sounding toppings. Then, our culinary nightmare began.

First came the wine. 10.50 for two glasses of truly lousy wine. I don't expect house wines to be top shelf stuff, but I could have paid 7 bucks for a box of better wine. It was pathetic, cloying white wine, served ice cold so you can't taste the turpentine going down.

As the headache from the wine started to take hold, we were presented with a slab of rubbery Shake-n-bake calamari with a side of ragu for dipping. It was like eating strips of battered rubber, the only flavors present being breadcrumbs and canned marinara sauce. This bland offering was the highlight of our meal.

After we were done chewing the calamari, we were assaulted with a pizza that will haunt my nightmares for months. It turns out that the dominant topping of our pizza was whole cloves of garlic. Whole cloves. I counted seven CLOVES of garlic on the one slice of pizza I managed to eat. All of the other ingredients were suffocated by the ridiculous overdose of garlic. Everyone likes a little garlic, but garlic is a seasoning, not a topping. In fact, the only indication of chicken that I managed to get was when I bit down on a chicken bone. I managed to choke down one whole slice after picking off most of the garlic, my wife didn't even finish one small slice.

After picking at our pizzas a bit the waitress came by and offered us desert. We declined, as we both had tremendous headaches brought on by lousy wine and too much garlic, and we fled while we still could.

This restaurant is terrible. I would not recommend it to anyone under any circumstances. You're better off with little caesars pizza and a box of wine.

Filth.

My girlfriend loves Italian food. I often look for new places to take her. We have gone to many of the local places but since Nona's, it has become her favorite. I always know where to take her for a romanitic dinner that she will be sure to love.

read the description of Nona Emelias and if big is your definition of good then this is the place for you. However if you are looking for quality, edible food - this is not the place. I cant believe that anyone who writes about food considers this worthy of praise!

The pizza was doughy and uncooked. It tasted like a frozen pizza with a pile of toppings in the middle. It is a shame that this place claims to be original italian! The only thing Italian is the name. I guess I should have guessed I was not going to get quality when the girl at the front counter was busy talking to her friends on her cell and the kitchen looked more like a taqueria than a pizzaria.

The portions tend to be huge and the food is typically average or better so it is worth the price. The biggest problem I've had with most of the food is that the sauces don't seem to have simmered long enough to really create the traditional italian flavor I'm used to. The ambience is that of a crowded italian restaurant. On friday and saturday nights they have a strolling accordian player. The place is reasonably clean. Service tends to be good in the evenings but poor during lunch time.

This is probably the worst "Italian" food I have ever had. There is absolutely no excuse to go here, especially since there are such great restaurants down the road. Please take the time and drive an extra 7 minutes and go to Mingo's or Decarli, both of those restaurants are twenty times better, with fresh food, and thoughtful preparation. They do give you HUGE portions at Nonna, but the food is so bad, there is no reason to take home any of the left overs, let alone eat any of the food. The pasta was overcooked, the sausage was flavorless, and the tomato sauce was insipid. Their "calamari" was a breaded squid steak, which was overcooked. Ugly decor, silk plants, phony Italian pictures and memorabilia (which can be bought at any home decor store such as bed bath and beyond). I can put together a better menu in ten minutes, with a restaurant concept. If you want to be an adult and actually eat well instead of stuffing your face with gruel, please go somewhere else, otherwise if you are total white trash with no taste, culture, or idea of what food can be, eat here. I pity anyone who put a good review for this restaurant.

We have eaten at Nonna Emilia's for quite awhile we always had good thick crust pizza until tonight! We got our pizza took a peice we could not bight it with our teeth, my husband immediatly picked up the pizza to look at the bottom to see if it was burnt, so we took a knife and for and had to saw a peice off.

The waitress came by to ask how it was, I asked her if they changed the dough recipe" she said no, she watched us try to cut our pizza and saw what trouble we were having, she said let me have them make you another so you can take home, I said we eat here quite often and it has never been like this, I also advised her it was not burnt but something was wrong, she came back 5 minutes later with the same pizza and said her manager said there was nothing wrong with it and handed us STEAK KNIVES, now come on!

We got the bill the cashier asked how everything was and my husband explained to her what had happened she said oh when I eat the buffet and the pizza has been sitting out for a long time it will be like that!!! Then she said oh thats too bad it should not be like that and charged us.

We did not want a full refund we did not even eat a whole 2 pieces out of the pizza but it would have been nice to have someone acknowledge there was something wrong or even given a coupon for next time.

Too bad we will never eat there again, very bad customer service and management, cutting a piece of pizza with a steak knife!!!!1

Simply amazing. I get full usually off 2 pieces of pizza there (and they're small pieces!!!) Generous with the ingredients. Ambience is great Italian. Service is highly rated.

I've been eating here since I was a kid and honestly, no pizza place comes close to this, nor ever has in the Portland Metro area.

We went to this Italian restaurant after several of our friends and coworkers recommended it. The first thing we noticed, strangely enough, was that the entrance was at the back of the building. We walked all the way around to the front before having to backtrack and search for the front door! We were able to be seated right away, despite it being a busy weekend night, and we were happy with the table we were given. However, we waited for around 5 minutes for our waitress to even greet us and she seemed rushed and hassled. I understand that she was busy, but good waitresses don't let their stress show. We were less than impressed with the obviously bagged iceberg lettuce salad (and what Italian restaurant doesn't have a house vinaigrette!?) and even further disappointed by our entrees. I had the manicotti...a greasy, cheesy mess with cotton dry ricotta inside. My husband had a sort of rigatoni...equally unimpressive. For around $12 an entree, it was very disappointing. My advice: save your money!

Food is served big, with no imagination and lots of cheese. My Veal was hard as a roof tile; my salad was out of a hospital cafeteria with iceberg lettuce and dressing that would make Paul Newman shudder, and my wife's eggplant was over cooked and nasty.

The anti pasta did not even have an olive. Just of carrots, more cheap cheese and bad salami. Anyone who thinks this a real Italian must think the Olive Garden is Roman owned chain. Stay away and open a can at home and get better results.

Pros: good wines

Cons: read

Whomever thinks this food is at all edible needs to stop smoking the local shrubery!
We started with the calamari, OH MY GOD! When she brought it to the table, we thought she brought the wrong thing and gave us chicken fingers! I've never seen calamari like this! The tenticles were cut lenghtwise, instead of in rings. Horrible!
Then we ordered the Chicken Verdura, which was nothing more than a giant plate of pale, bland chicken and veggies with cheap, awfule whole wheat pasta, swimming in a vat of oil and garlic. The garlic was so powerful, I feared that the restaurants had a vampire problem! The odor was so bad, we had to have it taken from the table. They did not remove this item from our bill, either. We ate NONE of it! The pizza my Husband and Father split was the worst I've had in this area. I swear the dough is Pillsbury buscuits mashed together and rolled out. The only redeeming quality of the night was the great wine we ordered, and our server was amazing! Unfirtunately that is not enough to bring us back.

About 15-20 years ago I would have a business lunch here on occasion. I was young and appreciated a football-sized calzone, which is one of the things that made them famous. I met some friends here for dinner last night since they live in the burbs and one of the parties requested Italian food. I read the reviews before going out and was hoping for the best. What a disappointment. The vegetarian antipasti consisted of carrots, celery, pickle slices, provolone and peppers. The meat version had what looked like salami. The dinner salad was iceberg lettuce, drenched in blue cheese with some crappy store bought croutons. The highlight of the meal was the garlic bread and even that was mediocre at best. I ordered what had to be the worst Eggplant Parmesan I?ve ever had. It was smothered in cheese but was almost 100% void of any sauce. I had to ask for a side of sauce which helped make it edible. My girlfriend split a vegi calzone which was covered with cold cheese that had not melted, like you might see in a salad. We happened to bring our own wine for a special occasion which the waitress practically ruined by popping the cork and then pouring each of our glasses to near the rim in some crappy glassware so you couldn?t swirl the wine to let it breathe. My only recommendation is that if you end up here, try the pizza and hope it is better than any of the food our party of 6 received.

Pros: The size of calzone - but does it matter when they aren't good?

Cons: Food, service, decor

I have been eating pizza for a while now, all over the country, and none can compare to that at Nona Emilia's! It is so delicious. The toppings are good and plentiful, the sauce is good, the crust is amazing and thick. I dream of this pizza when I am away from Oregon. I saw the other reviews here, and all I can say is that I love the pizza sooooo much that I haven't been able to try the other Italian dishes. You can't go wrong with the pizza and you better show up hungry....they are pretty good sized!

This restaraunt in in fact the bees knees! The service is wonderful from the get go! Hostesses are the friendliest around, and the waitstaff are REAL people and not your average diner Robot drones! My boyfriend and i were catered to in this niche litttle italian place. the food is endless and the taste is euphoric! not a damn thing wrong with this restaraunt! not one thing!

Disappointing. Very disappointing. The service was slow - and it wasn't that busy (Tuesday night). The Antipasto plate was a joke (carrot sticks and celery). The rigatoni sauce tasted like Chef Boyardee and the gnocchi was undercooked and completely doughy. It took us well over an hour and a half for two us to be seated, served our drinks, antipasto plate, salad, and meal. We could have been finished in 15 minutes as we didn't care to finish any of the courses.

My boyfriend took me here for dinner for a special date night. We were very disappointed. Our waitress was horrid! She took our order and we never saw her again, I actually had to ask another waitress for our check! The 'garlic' cheese bread had no garlic and too much cheese. My lasagna had no flavor besides the over abundance of cheese and my boyfriends pasta plate was very bland. There was no flavor in the sauce and way too much cheese on everything! Even the soup was bad, I had to add tons of pepper. This is one of the rare occasions that we actually left NO TIP!

My wife and I have been to Italy a couple of times, and both times for stays 3 weeks or longer. W are adventurous and would try food all over the large and small towns we visited, so I'd say we should know what good Italian food tastes like. Well, this isn't it. As some others have mentioned, the pasta was overcooked and bland. Pasta should have a "bite" to them, and shouldn't be like the limp stuff served here. It might taste fine to some, but it definitely isn't authentic. They do serve a lot of it though.

Nonna Emilia is definitely not authentic Italian. Their meat and marinara sauces are bland, their pasta is overcooked, their chicken parmigiana has so much cheese on it any authentic Italian chef would consider this menu a disaster. Their portions are enormous too, which takes the joy of savoring your food. I've been to Italy plenty of times, especially to several villages away from touristy destinations, and the one thing I can tell you is this is far from real Italian cooking.

If you don't like this place then you don't like real italian food.
It is not "New York Italian" or "Olive Garden" or a hybrid of chain restuaruants.
It is the authentic taste of Italy. I recommend the Lasgna and Gnocci. Those are their signature dishes. The Pizza is very good as well.

I have been going to Nonna's since I moved to Portland in 1996. I have never
been dissapointed. Everything is made from scratch the traditional italian way.

I've been to Italy and the food at Nonnas is as good if not better than may favorite ristorante in Florance. I can't belive that you can find food that good in a little town of Aloha, OR. Thanks to Nonnas for that quality of food that I only thought you could find in Italy.

I had heard so much about what a great place this was and decided I had to try it. I like the old fashioned Itailian resurant feel. I liked the appitizer with meat and cheese, a little differnt than other Itailian resurants. I ordered something with a garlic cream sauce, my sister ordered the alfredo. They were the same thing! And bland! Tryed to help it along with some salt and pepper but didn't help much. We didn't eat much. Got to go boxes (really good portion size) figuring we could add something to it at home but just ending up throwing it away. I don't know... maybe their red sauces are better?

Nonna Emilia's is our cheers. We love how much food you get with your meals (we can easily split the lasagna, anti-pasta plate, side pasta dish, garlic bread AND salads that are included with ONE dinner) between two people and be more than full. The waitstaff is super friendly and accomodating and the menu has a pretty extensive list of good dishes. The salads are a little bland, mostly ice berg lettuce and the caesar is a real disappointment, served on iceberg lettuce with a very salty caesar pesto dressing that is NOT good. The wine list is a little lacking, but they still offer some decent wine at very decent prices. The service in the bar is slower, but there is no need to sit in there unless one smokes or gambles, as the restaurant is very large. The booths are a little uncomfortable (think high backed picnic style benches) but the accordian player is always a treat and will play requests for a small tip. The service is fast and most of the food is great at very reasonable prices for HUGE portions.

Pros: Huge portions, great service and good food at this Beaverton staple keeps us regularly coming back for more

Cons: The salads need much improving as does the uncomfortable seating

My husband and I were excited to try this place, but could not have been more disappointed with every aspect of our experience! The food was terrible to the point of inedible. If I made something like that at home it would have gone directly in the trash. The prices seemed high, the portions were average, the service was slow and unresponsive though the restaurant wasn't busy. Everything tasted oversalted and burnt. The only thing even barely edible (and we're NOT that picky) was the garlic bread. Spaghetti Factory is more authentic and better tasting (and that's saying something! hehe)

Although this is not the "best" Italian restaurant I have been to, the food is pretty good and I am very impressed with the friendly, attentive staff. They don't offer the more authentic "non-pasta/pizza" dishes that you can find at some Italian restaurants and bistros, but the pasta dishes have never disapointed us. The portions are large and I feel well priced at an average of $13 a plate. In my opinion people who state that they are overpriced should eat at Denny's. They have a reasonable wine selection as well.

Nonna's is the place to go for amazing Italian food served in a wonderful atmosphere!

The prices are moderate, and the portions are large enough that you'll go home with a doggie bag.

Whether you want a romantic dinner for two, or a birthday party for Grampa, you'll truly enjoy Nonna Emilia's.

My family highly recommends their pizzas. If you order one for take out, be careful when you lift it. It will weigh much more than you expect. When it normally takes six to eight pieces of pizza from any of the regular chain delivery places to satisfy my teenaged son, he's full after two pieces of Nonna's combination pie.

It's worth the drive!

PROS: Good prices, excellent portions.
CONS:

Nona Emilia is an Italian restaurant located in Aloha right off of TV highway. They serve up hearty portions of spaghetti, tasty garlic bread, and a host of other mouth-watering dishes. The atmosphere is dark and romantic, complete with drippy candles. It reminds one of the adorable scene from Lady and the Tramp date scene where they share plate of spaghetti.

I work between 23rd, and the pearl districts so I've been to all of those trendy italian restaurants more than once, but for me Nona's beats them all hands down. It's definitely going to be a matter of taste though, the dining area, and bar are a bit on the shabby side, and the food is neither creative nor fancy. It is however, fabulous, and served in enormous portions. It's the place to go if you want homestyle comfort foods, but if you perfer a trendier setting, or "creative" italian food I'd suggest somewhere else. However if you want homestyle italian this is the place to go.

We have been going to Nonna Emilia Restaurant now a couple times a month for 4 years. There lasanga is our favorite! When we visit, it feels warm & welcoming, the quality of food is great, tastes like homemade. Let's just say, you definately leave with a FULL stomach. Great atmosphere! Prices are average with other big chain italian restaurants, but more for your money!
