We checked this place out thoroughly and decided against it for assisted living. In the three times we visited the assisted living side of the facility, it took us over 1/2 hour to find ANY staff person. The front desk person kept telling us to go to different floors to find someone and we ran around frustrated. They must be very short staffed! Marketing is strong here, but be aware that the director and the head of nursing really pour over your loved ones medical records supposedly to make a good "fit", but really it appears to be to hand pick new residents with few to no medical issues. But, that's why they need assisted living! We had the definite sense that they like their retirement residents and they like to keep a "cruise ship" "we're all having fun, fun, fun" atmosphere and well, your medically ill relative is not part of the plan! There are better places for assisted living that truly offer the assistance and backup medical care an older person needs.

Although the facilities are a little older and not as fancy as some of the newer retirement homes out there, I found Cornell Estates to be more warm and family-like than the other retirement homes I visited. When my elderly relative moved in there, we visited often and were welcomed with open arms. It was really a much warmer and more community-oriented place than many of the others we looked at.

They also had an outstanding transitional program between really independent living on the retirement side and stepped-up care on the assisted living side. You could contract with special aides to come and help with showering or meds or whatever your relative needs extra support with, without having to move them over to assisted living yet. This was an EXCELLENT program and not available in every facility.
