This place is yummy! Definitely authentic mexican food. They give you yummy, greasy free chips and salsa and the food is good and relatively inexpensive.

I have such mixed reviews on this little Taqueria. Their Tamales and fish tacos are delicious, most of the time. It can be really hit or miss. Sometimes the tamales are covered in yummy cheese and sauce and sometimes they are just thrown on a plate, dry and boring. The services, well, it's could use some improving. Sometimes the staff is super friendly and other times I feel like I am a nuisance and it is an inconvenience for me to even be there..ordering food. That said, I do go there quite often as it is close to me and when it is good, it's really good.

Hi, true Mexican food lovers!

My wife, Shamady, returned yesterday (3/9/09) to the restaurant - after a long absence - at the request of the new owners (our brother and sister-in-law) to resume COOKING!

I REALLY BELIEVE SHE IS PORTLAND'S BEST AUTHENTIC-MEXICAN COOK! True Baja!

After all, her beautiful mother ("Mama Marta", who sadly has passed away), the original cook, taught her the secret fish taco recipe - and the incredible sauces - of "lo mas popular" of all the taco stands of the fishing village of San Felipe, North Baja.

And as far as I know, this is Portland's only place that hand-makes the corn tortillas for tacos, and grills the flour ones for burritos!

So, if you can give peace a chance, give San Felipe a chance.

At least go in, and tell her you're happy she's back! (The food will make your day, and your "saludos" will certainly make her feel welcome!).

Vaya a dios,
Gregg

Pros: Portland's best authentic baja Mexican food COOK IS BACK!

Cons: You'll stuff your face silly.

This isn't one of them. Although citysearch doesn't show them, los volcanes in Gladstone is hard to find, but impossible to beat. A wide menu of great choices. The do some things VERY well, and some not so great. Try anything in a cream sauce, cocktel de camerones or platos. The fresh pico de gillo is great, and supposedly they have papusas, but i've not noticed. Its small, very authentic mexican style - too much color and vinyl - but the food cant be beat.

The other authentic mexican place i dont recall the name - maria's maybe, is near US Bank at MLK and Killingsworth, on the north east block, just to the east of the gas station.

Support the authentic places before we lose them to taco bell and generic places that microwave cheese on tortillas.

The food here is terrific. By far that best Mexican food I've had in the Portland Metro area. The fish tacos are amazing. Friendly and fast service as well : )

My wife and I love to try out local spots - support neighborhood places and everything... Doesn't always work out for you. We ordered some pretty standard items and in every case were disapponted by food. The burrito, tacos - everything was bland if not a little gross.
May be we had a bad experience but it was bad enough that we won't be back.

My friends and I came here on a whim. Bad call. One order a fish taco. Apparently, the restaurant shops at the 7-11 next door, because that's pretty much what he got. Food from the Sev with some French's thrown on top. My boyfriend and I split a plate of enchiladas (half cheese/half pork) with them knowing I was a vegetarian. Halfway through my enchilada, I tasted something funny. Pork. When we went to complain, the cashier was a rude as could be. Not recommended.

the best fish tacos, margaritas and beverage choices. I wish they had table service though, I don't like that anytime I would like another side, drink, ect, I have to get up, stand in line and run my card again.

My friend and I were trying to find a nice, cool spot one hot afternoon and found San Felipe. What a find! The margaritas were delicious and the ambience reminded me of a trip to Mexico I once took. We sat outside and enjoyed the nice breeze while scarfing down some great fish tacos. The service was casual and friendly and, can I say again, the margaritas were delicious! This definantly goes on my list of favorite secret spots!

The burritos used to be huge and only $5, now they're not huge and $6. The torta on the other hand hasn't changed, it's friggin delicious. The fish tacos are okay but nothing special, I don't know why they talk it up since they should be talking up the tortas. They have a nice kitschy interior with old mexican movie posters and a mexican movie on the tube. This place is nice for sunny days of drinking beer and stuffing your face while watching traffic go by on milwaukee and the fatties get fatter at dairy queen.

We come here quite a bit - excellent asada meat. Although the last two times we've gone, they run out of food. First - no more beans. How can you have Mexican food minus the beans. Tonight - we arrived at 7:45 - doors are locked - worker said they ran out of food. Drove all the way from Vancouver - quite a drive - so we weren't thrilled to have to turn around and come back home. Great for them being they are so popular they run out of food, means they are making 'mucho dinero' - bad for us customers who go away hungery. Whoever does the food ordering, obviously needs to be upping the order. Not cheap, expensive for such a 'casual' place, but then again the food is the best Mexican food I've tasted outside of Mexico itself. It's like real Mexican 'home cooking'.

This is my favorite taqueria in Portland. It's in Sellwood. They're supposedly known for their fish tacos (which are very good, but have an odd mustardy sauce I don't care for personally). However, what I think is absolutely sublime is their carnitas burrito. Succulent, juicy, delicious! They also do a pretty nice Mole sauce. A big plus is their sauces. They have four kinds, including this amazing hot avocado sauce that is velvety smooth and spicy.

The place is decorated as an homage to Mexican cinema. There are all sorts of movie posters for Spanish language films. They serve beer and wine (including a nice selection of Mexican draft beers).

I've eaten at quite a few Portland taquerias (although not all). So far this is the best one in my view. I return again and again even though I now live in NE Portland.

This taqueria used to be our favorite place to eat. It had incredibly good food and cheap prices. Word spread about the spot at soon it was so poplular they had to open on Mondays. Eventually, the were popular enough to expand into space next door. However, with popularity seemed to come greed. the quality of food has become inconsistent along with the service. Additionally, prices have jumped $1 - 1.50 on all menu items in the last month alone. It's not worth it anymore. Their prices are more expensive than a restaurant that offers sit down service. I still hope they realize the reason business has dropped and there are no more long lines.

The best mole in town! Go on Sat's when they have mole and you'll be happy, before 11:30 am and you hardly have to wait. A great price for the most delicious tacos I've had since the taco wagon in Walla Walla (Taco Loco). Tamales are a good choice for those with moxy who like a little flavor too.

San Felipe is wonderful! Very authentic, and I think sparsely charming! They did just recently expand seating and beer selection is bigger. But seriously, my husband and I found this place soon after they just opened and we are frequent customers. The Pork Torta is so delicious! The Fish Burrito is yummy (even for the $7.00 price tag). A new found favorite is a Saturday only special of Chicken Mole-go early tho...it goes fast!
Great for the value, excellent food, nice and friendly service.

Finally Portalnd has the real fish taco, that I've wanted since visiting Baja. The gorditas are always wonderful - especially the pollo verde that comes with lots of veggies. Tamales made daily are still my favorite. The chips are always fresh (you can see them being made!) but you may have to add salt. And I know of no other place that serves such large chile rellenos. Definitely try it!

WOW! This food is completely filling and fresh. It has the most flavor the food ranges in spicyness. The service is wonderful, and they just expanded so seating is very good. You can call in and order, and it's always ready and hot when you go to pick it up. Prices are very cheap and affordable.. if you havn't been there yet.. you're missing out!!

I haven't tried too many of the other restraunts listed, but I have found San Felipe to be my favorite so far as Mexican food goes in this city. It is close to my house, the food is fairly cheap and delicous. There isn't much room to enjoy your meal there, but the take-out service is great. I am working on the entire menu, but most of the time I stick to the burritos or the tortas. Colorful atmosphere and a friendly staff and especially the food, make this a definite place to try. They are closed Sundays, though. I think this is good, though every now and then I wish they were open, but that is a selfish thing for me. I encourage them to continue to take a day off.
