This place is on it's last leg! I new the original owner and have bee going to Big Reds for close to 20 years. The last 15 years the manager has been a woman that we knew as "Charlie". My kids grew up going there while Charlie was there and we all loved her very much. Several years back the place changed hands but we kept going since Charlie continued to work there. A couple of years ago the place changed hands to someone who runs a Chineese place and knows nothing about Tex-Mex food or decor or who any of the old time clients were. The business began to fade, we stopped going by as much as the service and food went down hill. Occasionally my kids wanted to see Charlie and so out of caring for her we stopped in. We found out today the owner let Charlie go, the ONLY person there that had long time relationships with the customers. After nearly 20 years I will not be going back ever again. My advice to the owner is to sell out to someone who knows and understands Tex-Mex, Western or Mexican food and certainly understands GOOD FOOD, GOOD SERVICE means REPEAT BUSINESS!!! Adios to our beloved Charlie, I know we will see you again!

Had just spent the day at the Children's Museum and thought to take my Dad to get a bite to eat before we parted. I had my two little ones with me who were very hungry but still in amazingly good moods so I thought what the heck. We entered a little after 11am, which is when they open, and we were one of three tables there at that time. The sign says wait to be seated but there was no one in sight so I thought "maybe she is busy" and didn't think anything of it. Figured I would help out and get us situated so the only thing the server had to do was bring menus and take the order. Keep things light and breezy right. The girl greeted us nice enough and everything started out fine. We ordered and the kids were doing great still so why make a fuss. Cut to an hour later, no food, kids irritated and the place filled up by now. Other people who came in after us had their food and our server was M.I.A. I finally find her and ask her what the deal is. She gives a weak and ridiculous answer of "I am sorry but there is a new cook. Your food is coming. I could bring some chips and salsa." HMMM, you think?! She brings this AND our food at almost the same time. Well, how did that help? PS, all I ordered the kids was grilled cheese and french fries and that showed up gross almost not cooked. My dad had ordered a fajita omelet and that was cold along with the french fries that came with my sandwich. It was ridiculous. She takes my dad's food off the bill since he didn't eat it. THEN, I am thinking I will take half my food home and with the lousy service, I think I will make the effort to walk over and get a box from someone in the kitchen. Another server saw me and deliberately ignored me. The cook asked her if she could hand it to me and she walked off after acknowledging him and not caring. The cook actually handed the box to my server who had just shown up. We get our bill and I am thinking "She can't possibly think I am going to tip right?" We paid our bill and got the heck out of there. Ridiculous experience with an equally ridiculous reason for it. Ugh, embarrassing and my dad still went home hungry.

Pros: Convenience next to the zoo

Cons: Horrible Service, Horrible food

.

We like to stop at Big Red's when we visit the zoo or if we are shopping in Portland. They atmosphere is nice and the food is good. I prefer the Mexican food when I go there,

The convenient location, enroute from downtown toward Washington County, draws the weary folks in for a drink after a day's work. The food is ordinary and so is the atmosphere.

My wife and I enjoy the slightly kitschy Tex-Mex decor - often joking about our meal being eyed by an overhead varmint. But the reasons we go are the quesadillas, the puerco burger, and the hush puppies.

Big Red's has yummy tex-mex food. Nice and quick staff. Great salsa. Neat decor. Parking lot is often full but parking on the street isn't too bad.

Yummy, Yummy, Yummy!!

My family and I LOVE this place. The nachos are incredible, the chicken flautas equally good, great burgers, waffle fries are nummy too. The SW Fiesta Chicken Salad - one of my favorites. Husband loves the chicken fried steak, the chicken strips are my son's favorites, my daughter orders kid-sized nachos (tho not listed on the kids menu - just ask for "Callie's Nachos - they will know!) Perfect place to head after the zoo - it's right around the corner! I personally can't wait for summertime to sit outside on the patio and have a freshly made strawberry marguarita!

Ever get tired of those expensive, plastic bars downtown and in NW? Reds might be a good change. Great prices on weekend day-long happy hours, but without the crowds. You can actually have a conversation! The restaurant is family oriented, but I prefer the bar. All the peanuts you can manage, and feel free to wing the shells on the floor. The bartenders have always been great (but the service is not always fully aware). Hearty menu with good value.

Pros: casual ambience, southwestern style; good people; prices ok; out of the way

Cons: service at times; prices seem to be going up over time;

I really enjoy this restaurant. It's casual, good food and fun atmosphere especially on the patio when it's warm. My favorite thing is that they are great about customizing your food so you get it the way you want it (for me that's adding grilled mushrooms to everything!). And I love Charlie!! She's wonderful - I always go in when she's working. I definitely recommend this place.

Pros: Food, Management

Cons: Smoky in bar

We come here a lot and really enjoy the food/atmosphere. The food is pretty fairly priced and portions are plenty large, enough to fill up on and still take some home. It's usually fairly slow, which is nice because the service is great! I always run into the bar (if we're not already sitting there) and say hi to Charlie--she's always happy to see us! This place is definitely worth a visit...or two!!

An uninspiring menu, but the southwestern decor is cute. A few too many beer company and lottery advertisements to be considered a "good family place"

Children's menu was reasonably priced (3-4 dollars), but lacking in healthy options and didn't offer any of the southwestern food choices from the adult menu in child portions. Options included typical grilled cheese, cheeseburger, corn dog, etc.

Chili was decent but be forewarned, quite spicy according to my father-in-law. Taco and fajitas platters were of hearty proportions, but basically served cold (lettuce, cheese, tortilla, tomatoes apparently came right from the bag in the fridge). The pico de gallo was fresh and quite spicy/tasty. Side salad fresh but seemed to be just from a bag.

The place was baron on a Wednesday night before the Thanksgiving holiday. The waiter was very attentive.

It's possibly that we'd go back some day since it's not far from our home, but only if we had a coupon since the prices were a little steep for the quality of food. There are better SW restaurants out there.

p.s. The editorial review suggests going to the patio to escape the country music inside, but then you'd have to contend with the HWY 26 traffic noise which is a stones-throw away from the patio.

We ordered to our kids hot chocolate and it was brought to my 2y old with a straw. He tried to drink it and burned his mouth pretty bad. My husband and I tried it as well and sure enough it was really HOT! When we talked to the manager she didn't apologize for once and started blaming us for ordering it to our kids. All we wanted to hear that she is sorry for what happened and that in the future they will be serving them with a caution. Then, after 10 minutes of trying to make sense out of this event, we left by paying the whole meal (we had almost $100 bill!) and all she offered is to take off the hot chocolate. I have NEVER seen someone so rude in restaurant business... I used to be a manager for a big restaurant as well and I/we would have never treated our customers so badly! If you ever dare to go there, be aware of that place! The food and drinks were tasty but I will not go back there ever again.
